EATWELL PLATE

ProteinsProteins, from the Greek proteios, meaning first, are a class

of organic compounds which are present in and vital to every living cell.

Proteins In the form of enzymes, hormones, antibodies, and

globulins, they catalyze, regulate, and protect the body chemistry.

Proteins In the form of skin, hair, callus, cartilage, muscles, tendons

and ligaments, proteins hold together, protect, and provide structure to the body of a multicelled organism.

Proteins In the form of hemoglobin, myoglobin and various

lipoproteins, they effect the transport of oxygen and other substances within an organism.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates

LipidsLipids are a broad group of naturally-occurring molecules which includes fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E and K), monoglycerides, diglycerides, phospholipids, and others. The main biological functions of lipids include energy storage, as structural components of cell membranes, and as important signaling molecules.

VitaminsA vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet.

Questions What are the five food groups?

Name some foods that belong to each of the groups.

Using the well plate analyse a meal that you have eaten today. Break the meal into the different food groups. Is it balanced?
