1. Niche it down. Why? Remember in the interview when Chris was talking about his first business selling rims on eBay? He said he tried to sell Honda rims and rims for other makes and models but they couldn’t compete with the rims for the Mustang. So he focused exclusively on selling rims for Mustangs. It was a subtle part of the interview but an important lesson on the importance of listening to your customers and being aware that sometimes your real opportunity in business may lie in a niche within a niche. Think about your current or future business. Write down the niche or niches you’re targeting. Then for each niche, list three sub-niches. For example: “I sell rims for cars on eBay” becomes “I sell rims for Mustangs on eBay.”

2. Build your Parthenon Why? First off, if you’re not familiar with Jay Abraham’s teachings you’re missing out. One of the principles he teaches and Chris mentioned is The Power Parthenon Strategy. Think of your business as the Parthenon. Your revenue is the roof and each column is a supporting marketing activity that contributes to your business’ revenue. What are the names of the columns supporting your business right now? If you’re still building your business, what are the pillars you need to build? Here’s an overview of the process – focus on page 5. List your pillars below.

3. Never run out of blog content How? Chris’ strategy for creating blog content is brilliant. Go to HARO.com and set up a free, basic account as a source. After you sign up you’ll start receiving emails from reporters who are looking for sources for the stories they’re working on. You can choose the industries that relate to the interest of your customers. When you receive the questions from reporters, write detailed answers to them. Sometimes it’s easier to respond to questions than it is to sit down and try to come up with your own content. You can choose whether or not to send them your answer. Either way, there’s a good chance that whatever you just typed is a good start to a blog post. Genius!
