DESIRE FLIES INTO DERBY PICTURE AFTER DANTE WINThe extended ten-furlong Gr.2 Dante Stakes, which has a decent record of providing the winner of the Gr.1 Derby, was meant to shed light on a cloudy and murky picture for the Classic, but it was a case of another trial being landed by a horse that is not even currently entered.

MIDDLETON STAKESAlways a highly informative extended ten-furlong Gr.2 filly and mares contest, its roll call in the past five years includes Midday, Izzi Top, Dalkala, Ambivalent and Secret Gesture. The Irish raider Ballybacka Queen (Hurricane Run) and the favourite Journey (Dubawi) ensured the contest started at a decent pace, with the former taking over after a couple of furlongs. The pace slackened and then increased three from home, where Journey, who travelled well took a narrow lead. Lady Of Dubai (Dubawi) appeared down the outside travelling well, with Beautiful Romance (New Approach), who made her move in between the pair, taking over inside the furlong pole before going away to a length and a quarter win. Koora (Pivotal) had a luckless passage, being stuck in behind the leaders up the straight, but stayed on strongly to grab second, a neck ahead of Journey, with Speedy Boarding (Shamardal) making a decent seasonal debut in fourth.

This was a first Group win for Beautiful Romance, who had taken last August’s Listed August Stakes by a wide margin. After that she was a well beaten fifth in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, but bounced back to form on her final start when third in the Gr.1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot in mid-October. She had also finished third in the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes last April. She holds entries in both the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes and Gr.2 Hardwicke Stakes, both over twelve furlongs.

“We all think she’s a proper Gr.1 filly and the options now are the Hardwicke Stakes or the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, for which she would need to be supplemented,” said Godolphin boss John Ferguson. “The other option is the Coronation Cup and a mile and a half is no problem at all for her, so it gives us options.”

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, she is the best performer from five runners out of the Gr.3 (then) Princess Royal Stakes winner Mazuna (Cape Cross), a half-sister to the Listed-placed runner Nobilissime (Halling) and the dam of the Gr.3 Prix de Saint-Georges winner Beyond Desire.

HAMBLETON STAKESA second black type win of the day for Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin and James Doyle, with the filly Always Smile (Cape Cross) scoring a cosy neck win in this mile Listed handicap.

Settled in midfield as the field was led by Lord Of The Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar), the winner travelled strongly and came with her challenge from over two out down the centre of the track to grab the lead inside the final furlong and was always holding the late challenge of Convey (Dansili). Back in third was One Word More (Thousand Words), a length and a quarter behind the principals.

Lightly raced, Always Smile was making her first start since being beaten a nose by Osaila in the Listed Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot last June and was bringing up her fourth win in five starts. Bred by Darley, she is a half-sister to the Gr.2 May Hill Stakes winner and Classic-third Ihtimal (Shamardal), and they are the first two foals out of the winning Dubai Destination mare Eastern Joy. She is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix de Diane winner West Wind (Machiavellian) and the Listed winner Redbridge (Alleged). The second dam is the Gr.2 (then) Sun Chariot Stakes winner Red Slippers (Nureyev).

EBF WESTOW STAKESOne of last season’s speedy juvenile’s Easton Angel secured a first black type success in this EBF-sponsored five-furlong dash for

three-year-olds. The daughter of Dark Angel raced against the far rail as Exist (Exceed And Excel) scorched the grass down the centre with the main field, with Gracious John (Baltic King) the sole runner on his own more towards the stands’ rail. The winner travelled well and took over two out and, despite drifting to the centre of the course, ran on well to defeat the rallying Gracious John by three-quarters of a length. Fine Blend (Sakhee’s Secret) was third, a further length and a quarter behind.

After winning her maiden and the Hilary Needler Trophy on her first two starts, Easton Angel was second in the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes, fourth in the Gr.2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and third in the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes.

Bred by James Waldron and both a Tattersalls and Doncaster graduate, Easton Angel is the first winner out of the winning Elnadim mare Staceymac. She is a half-sister to the Listed winner and Gr.2 runner-up Kalahari Gold (Trans Island), as well as the dam of the dual Italian Listed-placed Only For Fun. The second dam Neat Shilling is an unraced daughter of Bob Back.

CUNCO A FIRST RUNNER FOR FRANKELFrankel is set to be represented by his first runner today in the second division of the six-furlong maiden at Newbury (2pm) and co-incidentally, his runner Cunco, was the first foal born by his sire and is also the first foal born out his Gr.3 C L Weld Park Stakes and Gr.3 Park Express Stakes-winning dam Chrysanthemum (Danehill Dancer). Trained by John Gosden, the colt is a homebred of Don Alberto Corporation, a division of the Chilean-based Bethia Holdings, who purchased the mare in utero for 800,000gns through Eaton Sales at the 2013 Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale.

Chrysanthemum was also a triple Listed winner for David Wachman, who also placed third in the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes. She is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Spoken To Me (Dylan Thomas), out of the winning Well Spoken, a Sadler’s Wells daughter of the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes winner Saintly Speech (Southern Halo).

STRONACH ANNOUNCES DATE FOR PEGASUS WORLD CUPThe Stronach Group, founded by Frank Stronach, has announced that the inaugural running of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup has been scheduled for Saturday, 28th January at Gulfstream Park.

The event, which will be the richest Thoroughbred race in the world, will be contested over nine furlongs on dirt. Each of the twelve entrants will pay $1 million to secure a spot in the starting gate. The entrant can either race, lease, contract or share a starter or sell their place. 100% of the net income from betting, media rights and sponsorships will be shared equally among the twelve.

“The Pegasus World Cup will be conducted to the highest standards,” said Frank Stronach, “and will be held on Saturday January 28th, thereby avoiding a conflict with either the Breeders’ Cup or the Dubai World Cup.”

at around halfway to Satanicjim (Pivotal). The winner drifted back to fourth by the time the runners made the home straight and was the first off the bridle, but picked up well from over 400m out to force his head in front on the line, winning by a quarter-length from Now We Can (Martillo), with a neck back to Prince Nomad (Galileo). A further neck and a half-length separated the entire five runners.

A lightly raced four-year-old entire, Launched had only once been out of the first two, on his last start in another Listed contest at Maisons-Laffitte. Previous to this he had been runner-up in two Listed events at Saint-Cloud, the first last September and the latter in late March.

He is closely related to the Gr.2 Beresford Stakes winner Curtain Call (Sadler’s Wells) and is a half-brother to the French Listed winner Nature Spirits (Beat Hollow). Their dam Apsara (Darshaan) is a half-sister to the likes of dual Gr.1 winner and sire Hernando (Niniski) and the Gr.1 (then) Prix Lupin winner and sire

EBF FEATURE RACELR EBF MARYGATE STAKES, YORK, 5F, 2YO, TODAY

The Listed Marygate Stakes, now worth £45,000, is one of the EBF’s longest running sponsorships in its series of fillies’ feature races. The EBF has supported the race since its inception in 2005.

This two-year-old contest over five furlongs has been won by some smart and speedy fillies over the last decade who have used the York race as a stepping stone to Royal Ascot and further Group race glory. Previous winners include Ceiling Kitty (Red Clubs) and Gilded (Redback), who both went on to win the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes on their next start; Misheer (Oasis Dream), who landed the 2009 Gr.2 Cherry Hinton; and Miss Work Of Art (Dutch Art) in 2011, who went on to be Group-placed.

Champion Two-Year-Old sire Kodiac achieved a notable 1-2 in 2014, being responsible for both the winner, Patience Alexander, and the second, Tiggy Wiggy, who crowned her glittering two-year-old career with a win in the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes.

BODEMEISTER OFF THE MARK AT GULFSTREAM PARKThe four and a half-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday provided Bodemeister with his first winner as a stallion. The filly Bode’s Dream secured a three and three-quarter-length victory for Todd Pletcher and owners St Elias Stable.

Bred by SF Bloodstock and out of the Gr.2 Forward Gal Stakes winner Frolic’s Dream (Smoke Glacken), the two-year-old has twice been through the Keeneland sales ring. Firstly selling to Walter Bloodstock for $135,000 at the November Breeding Stock Sale and the second time to Crupi’s New Castle Farm for $300,000 at the September Yearling Sale, while she was led out unsold at $340,000 at the OBS Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale in March.

BE MY GUEST SCULPTURE TO BE AUCTIONED

At Naas Racecourse on Wednesday, John Osborne revealed a sculpture of Be My Guest that will be auctioned in aid of the Naughton Family Trust, of which Osborne is trustee. The son of Northern Dancer topped the first Goffs yearling sale at the current premises at Kill, Co Kildare in 1975. The Moyglare-bred ran for Robert Sangster and Vincent O’Brien winning the Waterford Crystal Mile at Goodwood, the Blue Riband Trial and the Desmond Stakes, before retiring to Coolmore where he became a Champion Sire.

American Sculptor Rhonda Shearer created three full size sculptures for Moyglare, Goffs and Coolmore. Ten replicas of the sculpture were commissioned including one which will be auctioned at the Goffs London Sale on Monday, 13th June. All proceeds from the auction will go towards the Naughton Family Trust, which was set up in memory of David Naughton who tragically passed away last year.

The Naughton Family Trust will also host a night at Henlow Greyhound Stadium in the UK on Sunday, 29th May. As part of the fundraising efforts, an online auction has been set up (available HERE) and there is a Dragon Pulse 2017 nomination available, as well as a trip to Tom Dascombe’s yard and other items.

Ballybacka Queen (Hurricane Run) grabbed the lead and looked set to provide a decent pace, which slowed slightly through the mid section, before increasing it before three out. She was soon passed by the favourite Journey (Dubawi), who in turn was joined by Lady Of Dubai (Dubawi) and Beautiful Romance (New Approach) around the two pole. It was the latter who took over inside the final furlong and scored a cosy enough win. Koora (Pivotal) in second was arguably unlucky, having been trapped in behind the leading three for much of the straight.

Bodemeister, a son of the recently repatriated Empire Maker, broke his maiden in the February of his Classic season at Santa Anita. Stepped up to Gr.2 level on his next start, he was runner-up in the San Felipe Stakes, but rebounded next time out to score an extended nine-length win in the Gr.1 Arkansas Derby. He was to only have two more runs, but finished second to I’ll Have Another in both the Gr.1 Kentucky Derby and Gr.1 Preakness Stakes, both times going off favourite.

Bodemeister stands at WinStar Farm and his fee for 2016 is $30,000 S&N.

In what was a large field Dante, Sea Of Flames (Aqlaam) set what appeared to be only an average pace, with many in behind keen. Deauville (Galileo), who had moved into second before the turn for home, went into the lead and a clear one over two out, but he was reeled in by Wings Of Desire (Pivotal) near the line. The winner had been squeezed along from over four out, but made his move steadily down the outside of the field.

Wings Of Desire has come a long way in a short space of time, having only made his debut at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, where he was third and broke his maiden at Wolverhampton ten days later. He would need supplementing at a cost of £75,000 at the five-day stage for the Gr.1 Derby.

Wings Of Desire is a full-brother to the 2014 Gr.2 King Edward VII Stakes winner Eagle Top, who was second in last year’s Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and to the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes winner and Gr.1 Oaks-third The Lark. GOLD AWARDED 2015 WILLIE STEPHENSON MEMORIAL TROPHY

The prestigious Willie Stephenson Memorial Trophy for 2015 was yesterday awarded to Angus Gold. The award is given annually to the person or persons whom the DBS, now Goffs UK board feel have made the biggest contribution to the success of the company during that year.

Gold was rewarded for his role in the rise and rise of the company’s flagship Premier Yearling Sale, which last year saw him become leading buyer, spending £2.2 million on 20 yearlings.

Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby commented on the award: “It’s fitting that Angus is the last winner of the Willie Stephenson Award under the DBS banner as he has been a huge supporter of DBS throughout the years, in particular at the Premier Sale, and credit must go to him for helping the sale develop in stature to the major European yearling sale it is now.

“Angus has been very successful at selecting top-class horses from our sales and 2015 proved that once again with three of his Premier Sale purchases, Markaz, Tashweeq and Tasleet, winning Group or Stakes races, the latter of whom won the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes on his first three-year-old start this season following his victory in the £300,000 Premier Yearling Stakes at York last year.

“The team at Goffs UK/DBS would sincerely like to thank Angus for his continued support and wish him, and Sheikh Hamdan, continued success throughout the season.”

Like the first division winner, a Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes entry, the favourite Shall We (Dansili) bowled along in front with her ears pricked and drew away in the final furlong from the big, long-striding Malmoosa (Shamardal). Second in both her previous starts, the winner is a half-sister to the 2004 Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat third and Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains fourth Ershaad (Kingmambo) and the Listed-placed Gopher (Pulpit), and is the fourth winner from the first ten foals out of the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes winner Insight (Sadler’s Wells). The latter is one of three top-flight winners produced by the dual French Listed victrix Or Vision (Irish River), the others being the Prix de la Foret victor and sire Dolphin Street (Bluebird) and the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner and sire Saffron Walden (Sadler’s Wells). Or Vision is also the dam of the Listed-placed Vision’s Flight (Bluebird) and second dam of the Canadian Stakes winner Kristofferson. The third dam, the US winner Luv Luvin’ (Raise A Native), also produced Or Vision’s winning full-sister Brigid, who became the dam of Gr.1 winners Sequoyah and Listen (herself the dam of Japanese Gr.2 winner Touching Speech), grandam of Gr.1 winner and sire Henrythenavigator and third dam of Gr.1 winner and sire Magician. Luv Luvin’ is also the dam of Stakes winners Dixie Fine and Nijinsky’s Lover (dam of two Group winners) and the Listed-placed Litani River (Irish River; grandam of Gr.1 winner and sire Beethoven).

The Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes entry Sovereign Parade (Galileo) was sent off at odds-on to make a winning debut and it looked for most of the race as if she would fail. She ran very green, but the penny finally dropped in the last furlong and, using her powerful stride, she passed the three in front well inside the last furlong and won going away. She is a full-sister to the ill-fated Irish winner Jamaica and is the second foal of the French winner Dialafara (Anabaa), who was sold for €175,000 at the Arqana December Sale at the end of her three-year-old season. The second dam, Diamilina (Linamix), was a dual Group winner and finished second in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, and her six winning progeny are headed by the Gr.3-placed Diaghan (Lawman). The third dam, the Gr.2-placed Diamonaka (Akarad), also produced the Classic-placed Gr.3 winner and sire Diamond Green (Green Desert), the Gr.3 victrix Diamonixa (Linamix) and the Listed-placed Diyaraka (Clodovil), and is the second dam of the Australian Gr.3 winner Bauer. Diamonaka is a half-sister to the Group-winning trio Diamond Mix (Linamix), Diamond Dance (Dancehall) and Diasilixa (Linamix).

South African RACING AND BREEDING NEWS

NEW ANTE-POST FAVOURITE FOR DURBAN JULYLast Friday night’s feature racing introduced a new ante-post favourite for the Gr.1 Durban July following Black Arthur’s stylish win in the Gr.2 Canon Guineas at Greyville Racecourse. Ability to handle the tight turns of Durban’s city track is a fundamental for future winners of the July and the beautifully made son of Silvano showed that he has the turn of speed to combat the short straight. Available at around 33/1 a few days before the Guineas, he is now trading at 1/10th of those odds and it looks as if multiple July-winning jockey, Anthony Delpech has committed to the Snaith Stable for the big ride.

Black Arthur races for UK-based stalwart Cape owner Alec Foster, who bred the colt out of the Western Winter mare Grace Me Guide. Likewise bred and raced by the Fosters, she placed in both the Gr.3 Diana and Champagne Stakes and has met with considerable success as a broodmare. To Jallad, she bred Gr.3 East Cape Derby winner Robert The Bruce and Glenton, who finished third in the same race three years later. A previous mating with Silvano yielded Gr.1 Cape Derby third M’lords Throat. Grace Me Guide has a yearling filly by Trippi.

CAPE LISTED RACES FOR JUVENILE COLTS & FILLIESSmall fields dominated the two Listed events for juveniles in the Western Cape last Sunday. The six-furlong Somerset Stakes only attracted five runners and went to the Joey Ramsden-trained son of the late Western Winter, Attenborough, for Markus and Ingrid Jooste. Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm manager, Pippa Mickleburgh, Attenborough was purchased by Mayfair Speculators for R2-million from the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in 2015 and looks to be a highly promising sort.

Half an hour later, the fillies lined up in the Perfect Promise Sprint. The Merry Widow defied a penalty to record her third victory from as many starts and proved that the daughter of Captain Al is not only talented, but tough to boot as she had previously travelled to Port Elizabeth to contest their Listed feature a few weeks prior. Bred by the Boland Stud of Eugene Freeman, this is the fourth foal of Jallad mare, Miss Kiri, the full-sister of Gr.1 Premier’s Challenge Stakes winner Talahatchie. The Merry Widow was purchased by Tom Goff and Gavin

Hunter at the 2015 Bloodstock SA National Yearling Sale for R300,000 and races for the Drakenstein Stud of Gaynor Rupert.

The big race of the weekend is the East Cape Derby, a Gr.3 event run at Fairview Racecourse and which sees the locally-trained hope and Chinese owned, Welsh Emperor, another progressive son of Lammerskraal Stud’s Go Deputy, attempt to repel the Cape challenges of Elusive Silva and More Than Grand.

LEGISLATE RETIRES TO DRAKENSTEIN STUDStallion Management Services, Freemanstallions, has announced the retirement of the outstanding Legislate [pictured above] after his unplaced effort in last Friday’s Gr.2 Drill Hall Stakes. The partners discussed his retirement and it has been agreed that he be sent to Drakenstein Stud to let down for his stud career. Trainer Justin Snaith was keen to allow his superstar have another go at Gr.1 glory during the KZN Champion’s season as he felt that he got the horse back to his best. However, Snaith reported that his blood picture was not ideal and the decision was taken to retire the former Gr.1 Durban July winner. John Freeman stated: ”I have an undying faith in the legacy of the Sadler’s Wells sire line and especially, in South Africa, in his outstanding sire-of-sires son Fort Wood and his son Dynasty – what better way to continue that faith than in their best sons to race. In Legislate we have a Horse of the Year, dual Champion Racehorse and the fastest horse ever to win over a mile at Kenilworth. Consider how many champions that track has seen over a mile in the last 100 years and know that Legislate was the fastest of them all. He won four Gr1 races and over R5.5m.”

GERMAN THOROUGHBRED NEWS

PRESENTED BY

ITO NETS FIRST GOAL IN RACING’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUEThere is no doubt this colt is a Champion and a worthy winner of the first leg of the newly established German Racing Champions League! Despite giving three kilos to his rivals, the Schlenderhan-bred and owned Ito (Adlerflug) [pictured right] took the Gr.2 Gerling Preis at Cologne on Sunday, the inauguration for the new racing series aimed at attracting a wider audience to the sport of kings.

“We weren’t sure that he would win on his seasonal debut, but Filip Minarik gave him a peach of a ride”, trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho said. The five-year-old frontrunner now seems ready for a clash with the reigning German Horse Of The Year Nightflower (Dylan Thomas). The four-year-old filly trained by Peter Schiergen is being aimed at the Gr.2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft at Baden-Baden at the end of the month, the second leg of the Champions League Series.

“We haven’t decided yet if we will run at Baden-Baden”, Carvalho pondered last Sunday. “But it is a clear possibility.” The Schlenderhan-based trainer celebrated a true hat-trick – winning the Gerling-Preis for the third year in a row. A win with Ito at Baden-Baden would do the same there, after scoring with Almandin (Monsun) in 2014 and with Ito last year.

SIRIUS A VERY CONSISTENT PERFORMERThe runner-up from Cologne, Sirius (Dashing Blade) will most likely be there as well. The five-year-old out of Sarafina (Monsun) lived up to his reputation and for a moment looked like the winner. “He did show tremendous speed”, said a happy trainer Andreas Loewe. “It was not easy to come from that far behind.” Last year’s Gr.1 Deutsches Derby-third Fair Mountain (Tiger Hill), Early Morning (Mamool) and Eric (Tertullian) finished strongly enough to earn their first Champions League points.

There were a couple of other performances during last week worth mentioning. In a Listed race in Dortmund, Shining Emerald (Clodovil) confirmed his status as Germany’s best sprinter. The Andreas Woehler-trained colt is now aiming to defend his title in the Gr.3 Silberne Peitsche, a 1200m race that has moved from Munich to Baden-Baden. In a Listed event at Cologne, Wildpark (Shamardal) provided Melanie Sauer with her first big score for her new stable in Hannover. On an international scale the Gr.2 win of Diplomat (Teofilo) at Capannelle for Mario Hofer made the headlines.

Looking at the Classic generation, the best performance of the week was probably made by San Salvador (Lord Of England). “I’m quite relieved”, trainer Loewe said after a convincing maiden win at Dortmund. “I bought the colt as a yearling in Baden-Baden for Gestuet Winterhauch with one thought in my mind, to have a Derby horse.“

FIRST CLASSIC ON MONDAYThe obvious highlight this weekend will be the Classic mile test, the 31st Mehl Muelhens-Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) in Cologne. The Gr.2 with total prize money of €153,000 will be run on Monday, a public holiday in Germany. The race does not have a great Derby record, with the last horse to win both being Gestuet Faehrhof’s

Lavirco, the winner twenty years ago, who was sired by Germany’s only Triple Crown winner Koenigsstuhl (Dschinghis Khan).

It’s even longer since the last filly won the German 2,000 Guineas, in 1949 the Schlenderhan-bred and owned Aubergine (Magnat), trained by living racing legend Hein Bollow. However, this year the filly Parvaneh (Holy Roman Emperor) stands a good chance to repeat this rare feat. She won on her seasonal debut in April, the Gr.3 Schwarzgold-Rennen. Last season, Parvaneh, trained by Waldemar Hickst, competed against the colts when finishing third in the Gr.3 Ratibor-Rennen behind Parthenius (Soldier Hollow) and El Loco (Lope De Vega).

MILLOWITSCH THE GUINEAS FAVOURITEEl Loco just lost out to his stablemate Millowitsch (Sehrezad) in the Gr.3 Dr Busch Memorial. For Monday’s contest Millowitsch is the 2/1 favourite with RaceBets. The colt bred and owned by Alexandra Renz has a very fine record, winning four of his five runs so far. His trainer Markus Klug has had a perfect start to the season, collecting 22 victories already.

“We don’t do anything different”, Klug said. “Last year I had 18 starters before we had a winner, this year everything seems to work in our favour.” But he will face a strong contender from overseas in the shape of the Marco Botti-trained Knife Edge (Zoffany), runner-up in the rearranged Gr.3 Greenham Stakes at Chelmsford in April. He has employed world-class jockey Ryan Moore to do the job.

A TRUE DERBY TRIALAt Hannover the Derby market leader Boscaccio (Mount Nelson) (7/1), trained by Christian Sprengel, is trying to underline his credentials for the Blue Riband event in a Listed race over 2200m on Monday. He will face the highly regarded Dschingis Secret (Soldier Hollow). From 2005 to 2007 the race saw three Derby winners in a row, Nicaron (Acatenango), Schiaparelli (Monsun) and Adlerflug (In The Wings).

Stamina plays an even bigger role at Hoppegarten on Sunday. The Oleander-Rennen is the only Gr.3 over two miles in Germany and has attracted the international proven stayers Walzertakt (Montjeu) and Alex My Boy (Dalakhani). PETER MUEHLFEIT
