ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe there is beauty in most simple things in life; whether purely in color, the play of light or shadow, achieved by shape or contrast, or elevated through composition. When choosing a subject for a painting, I look for these elements and try to capture an image that will evoke the same feeling with the viewer. My influences ranged from the great masters of the Italian Renaissance to everyday life of Norman Rockwell to later being drawn more to the Impressionistic era of Benson, Sargent, Hassam, Degas and Monet as they achieved great play of light and a sense of realism that presents the viewer with a simple scene to be enjoyed.Stylistically, I believe Realism is a good choice for me as I enjoy capturing small detail and pushing myself to achieve a true likeness to what I see and feel. Over time, I have gravitated from seascapes to urban settings that require a more architectural element and eye for form. In addition, I have explored impasto work with palette knife and/or a mix of palette knife and brush for more impressionistic work. My work is primarily in oils as it allows time to work with the paint to achieve a broader spectrum, blending, and layering of color for the effect I seek.
