February Newsletter
Signpost #1: Discernment
On Sunday January 13 I preached a sermon that includ-ed ten signposts of church renewal. Diana Butler Bass, a scholar of the American church, studied congregations that seem to be flourishing, and she found ten practices that were most often found in these churches:
Hospitality DiversityDiscernment JusticeHealing WorshipContemplation ReflectionTestimony Beauty
Over the next ten months I will be writing an article in the newsletter on these ten signposts so that we may keep them before us and consider ways we can practice them in our context. This month: Discernment.
We want to be a place to help people discern their gifts and God’s calling upon their lives. We also want to be a con-gregation that prayerful discerns where God is leading us.
Discernment is a way of making decisions that seems foreign to many of us in the church. Normally, we get the facts together, weigh pros and cons, and then vote. Dis-cernment involves prayerful conversation with one another as we listen for the Spirit’s voice in silence and in the voic-es of each other. It turns the important question away from, “Is this something we want to do? to “Is this something we believe God wants us to do?” It turns conversation away
from “This is what I think” to “This is where I sense the Spirit leading us.”
As a congregation we are in the midst of a discerning conversation about opening our Wednesday night dinners to the poor and hungry in our community. The idea has received a positive response from our deacons and the core of our Wednesday night gathering. To help us in our discernment, we have been spending Wednesday nights studying the parable of the Good Samaritan. We will continue our discernment into February.
Many important questions remain to be answered. A vol-untary Task Force is forming to seek the answer to those questions and to help us in our discernment process. If you would like to serve on this Task Force, email me and let him know.
May we seek to discern God’s will together.
Grace and Peace,
Greg

Am I crazy? I might be! But I can not get enough time with
the young people at FBCJ! Since I began working at FBC, I have spent time with the Youth. They
have amazed me with their servant hearts and creative ideas.
This month will be busy for the Youth! We will be traveling to Winterplace, West Virginia
February 15th-18th for a ski trip. Please pray for this trip as we continue to receive donations
and prepare. We are taking 19 Youth! All beginners!!!
All will attend Ski School to start the trip off!
Youth CONNECT has been a huge success! If you would like to
provide a dinner for the Youth, please contact Marcia McDaniel.

FBCJ Preschool2019 has gotten off to a great start here at the preschool! Last month we had our second book fair of the school year and a fun morning with Grandparents Day. We are starting Art Days again with Ms. Jackie. The students love making special crafts and sharing them with their loved ones. Coming up, we also have Valentine’s Day parties – a day of sweets and hearts and party time!
The preschool is in need of support from our church community. For many years, we have been blessed by our congregation’s generosity. There are many families that have given to the school in the past, but unfortunately are no longer able to do so. This year the number of scholarship applicants has increased while the number of donors has decreased. We have never turned away a student due to their inability to pay, but that affects the school. We are currently paying more than $400 out of our budget to support the scholarships of students that do not have a donor. We would love your help for these students and for the continued success of the preschool! Thank you and God bless!

Happy February! We have had a wonderful month getting back to our school routine. During the last few weeks, we have begun our new
Wednesday night routine. Miss Ruth Mehari is giving her time to teach music to all of our children on Wednesday nights. She is teaching
our younger group choir and our older group choir and handbells. We are so grateful for her and this new routine.
When the children are not in choir, they are in Missions. Here are some of our children's thoughts about the new
Wednesday night activities and additional quotes.Chance - I LOVE IT!
Maddie - We will be praying for every mommy; they need it.Weldon - Jesus was a boy too, but really He died on the cross for us.
Thanks,
Anna S. J. Walker Director of Children's Ministries
