French TG V (high speed train) technologyhas reestablished the train as the motor ofregional economic development. M ore thanone hundred years after the XIXth centuryindustrial revolution, the train is making a
strong come back and in its wake new sta-tions are being erected as symbols of mo-dernity. The three TG V stations on the M ed-iterranean line, opened on 10 June 2001 tomeet the demands of high speed rail travel, with an expected six million additional pas-sengers a year, vie in appeal and audacity.250 kilometres of new track have beenrolled out on the route between Valence,M arseilles and Nimes, punctuated by majorworks such as the crossings of the Rhoneand the Durance. C ompared with the costof this infrastructure totalling 3.8 billion eu-ros, the three stations, which are both sym-bolic and very busy, represent an almost
marginal investment, at between 24 and 36million euros per building (almost twice thatwhen external works are included).
High speed transport makes its own de-mands. In following the Rhone valley, theTG V route bypasses urban areas and its sta-tions are set in open country. Public trans-port links them to the historic town centres. The similarity with airports concerns morethan just location and includes the buildingsthemselves which now provide enclosedtemperature controlled accommodation, with heating and air conditioning, andequivalent amenities and comfort.
In keeping with railway tradition, steel
features prominently in these structures, bringing dynamic elegance to these focalpoints, and minimising the environmentalimpact of these large structures set in sensi-tive locations.

The lay-out of the sta-tion was constrained by this infrastructurewith the TG V tracks crossing the existinglines in a cutting, about 10 meters belowground level.

Because the TG V runs in a cutting, it waspossible to limit the height of the station.O n this site which is shared by the threeboroughs, the local councillors did not wantanything too prominent. The station there-fore has a low profile in this wide agricultur-al plain. It is predominantly horizontal com-pared to the Vercors the blue line of whichblocks the horizon. Its visual impact is inten-tionally minimal.
The station is built over the TG V tracks, with the entrance at ground level and facili-ties below. Its shape is train-like and seemsto be extruded from the profile of thetracks. It is composed of a central bay per-pendicular to the middle tracks used only bynon-stop trains, and of two wings aboveplatform level.

Following the metaphor of the train, theconstruction stretches over 220 meters- thelength of a TG V. The central hall is linked tothe the parking areas and beyond by walk-ways which straddle the side tracks used bythe stopping trains. These walkways arelinked to the stairs and escalators whichprovide access to the platforms below.
The station follows the line of the track, even to the extent that the floor of the hallslopes at 3% towards the south and theM editerranean sea which is still 200 kilome-tres way. As a result of this slight but per-ceptible slope safety tests were conductedon the surface. Surprisingly in reality it helpsto assimilate the building on the site.

Above ground, over the tracks, the sta-tion is of conventional construction. The en-tirely glazed central bay is raised on col-umns which rest on the thick walls enclos-ing the central tracks. The edges of the twocanopies springing from the central bay aresupported on the columns facing the carpark. The construction was erected in aconventional manner as a succession offrames the gable end of which forms theprofile of a tiered roof pagoda. The struc-ture is composed of a relatively rustic frameof standard tubes and sections. Its designexpresses the action of a weight lifter. TheV shaped arrangement of columns cradlesthe volume of the hall, with beams set inthe lower part and in the roof. The sideplatform beams are bolted to the outer lineof inclined columns, as are the roof cantilev-er beams.

The expression of this exposed frame isemphasised by crimson paint which accen-tuates the mechanical character and the ori-ental inspiration of the building, much ofwhich is covered with wood: plywood pan-els in the ceiling and floor of Jatoba laths. The tapered edges of the tiered roofs helpcreate a gossamer silhouette, and in artifi-cial light under the golden canopy of theroof, the crystalline prism of the hall seemsto be floating.

A t the end of a major river crossing, theTG V pauses in i ts southward advance on
the Courtine peninsular between the Rhoneand the Durance, a short distance from theCité des Papes. The stop is on the longcurve of the track, and takes the form of aslender building along the railway embank-ment. It extends over 360 metres, theequivalent of two TGV’s without the powerunits.
At this point the track is perpendicular tothe river and results in a curvilinear buildingwhich lends itself to a role of bioclimaticcontrol using the two contrasting north andsouth sides. The convex side turned to thesouth is treated as a thermal shield withnarrow openings to limit the solar radiation. The north facing concave face is glazed, and the doors onto the platform are re-duced in number and size because of theirexposure to the mistral, a strong windwhich blows through the Rhone valley 120days a year. This precaution is all the morefundamental in that this platform receivespassengers for Paris and Lyons which ac-count for 80% of the station’s traffic.

The geometric form of the structure isdefined by the intersection of two curvedsurfaces: one dictated by the curvature ofthe track and the other on section. Theshape thus comes and goes within 360 me-tres, slipping into the natural landscape ofthe peninsular. The curve also takes accountof the station floor level with a low point inits centre where it crosses under the tracks, and two high points at the extremities. Themezzanine floor at platform level provides ahorizontal datum. This structure, set on thenorthbound side of the station, is matchedon the other platform by a more summarystructure, set on the level of the railway em-bankment, protected by a wall and a cano-py.

Fluid in shape, this volume generated bya complex geometry required lengthy study. The coverings of the toroidal surfaces weresubject to testing approved by the BuildingScientific and Technical Centre, the Frenchcertification body. This vaulted shell, dividedinto two by the parabolic arc of the ridge, issupported by a steel frame of variable size. The structure to each side of the ridge wastreated separately and designed in relationto the covering.

The half shell forming the shield to thesouth is supported on main ribs embeddedin the ground. Consisting of arched CWB’s(castellated welded beams), they taper frombase to ridge providing a variable inertia. This structure is totally enclosed and is onlyapparent by the thickness of the wall asseen in the openings at the base. The exter-nal covering consists of large light colouredtiles made of glass cement compound(G CC) which give signif icant weight saving. The impression of massivity given by this el-ement is strengthened by the broad door-ways which signify depth and promise cool-ness.
Internally, a simple lattice of white treat-ed fir is sufficient to hide the insulation andthe air ducts. Because the temperature lagsuggested by this massive and opaque halfshell is quite relative, the volume enjoys anactive cooling system and heating system inwinter.

The last stop before M arseilles, this TG Vstation forms a monument in the middle of
a wilderness. O ne of the main objectives ofthis station is to relieve the Saint-Charlesterminus at M arseilles, particularly in rela-tion to M arignane airport and the town ofA ix-en-Provence which can be seen in thedistance on on the gentle slopes of the pla-teau d’A rbois with the Sainte-VictoireM ountain on the horizon. This view fromthe station, made famous by the painterCézanne, influenced the design of thestructure. The hall arches its back in mimicryof Sainte-Victoire, and is arranged at virtual-ly the same angle as in the artist’s paintings.Erected on the west side of the tracks, thestation symbolically copies this characteristicprofile. Distance and mist often blur theireffect, but under a bright blue sky sweptby the mistral, Sainte-Victoire appears.

The station sits imposingly and unexpect-edly in the centre of an access ring astridethe departmental road (RD9) linking Aix tothe M arseilles-M arignane airport. It is cutinto the limestone plateau, with the roadsengraved in the ochre rock. The simplicity ofthe design, and the arrangement of theroads and the surroundings create an inter-esting approach which makes the building asurprise. The sweeping wave of the roof re-flects the convex entrance façade, the westfacing glass wall of which is shaded by ad-
justable swivelling blinds with red cedarslats.

The Sainte-Victoire motif inspires a mon-umental hall in the purest railway tradition.By its setting at ground level on the plateau, its linear configuration and its emerging sil-houette, the Aix-en-Provence TG V station isthe most conventional of the three. It is alsothe one that stands out most strongly in thelandscape.
Its simplicity is accompanied by a largescale steel structure. Technological refine-ment enlivens this classical style which fitsall ideas of a station. The roof surface is lift-ed over the tracks by a forest of columnswhich rise and fall in the direction of theprevailing wind. The imposing effect ob-tained by the branching in fact only de-pends on two lines.

With an area of about one hectare(170 x 60 metres), the roof is covered by anorthogonal grillage of triangular sectiongirders. The main girders, with a 60 metrespan, consist of three assembled weldedsections. The coffer is composed of wingswelded on a free running heel and a suc-cession of triangular pairs. The secondarygirders disposed in stringers are coffersmade in one piece in folded sheet. The roofstructure is supported on exposed enam-elled steel boxes which hide the round ironsof the diagonal network of the generalbracing reinforced by discs around the pe-riphery. The covering is anchored to thefour corners by powerful tubular braces-forked open and bolted, held on the foun-dation masonry.

barschaft zum berühmten Berg Sainte-Victoire in A ix-en-Provence.
With the TG V as the main theme, the threenew stations of the M editerranean line areunusual structures, created on green fieldsites. Each responds to specific constraintsand follows its own design logic: theinterconnection of rail networks forValence; the climatic exposure for Avignon;the confrontation with the celebratedSainte-Victoire mountain for A ix-en-
Provence. A ll three are original but theyhave in common a realisation whichrespects the environment. Each in its ownway engages a dialogue with the landscapeand foreshadows a future developmentmore caring for nature.
