Change in Meal Service for the New School Year In the spring of 2020 during the initial pandemic outbreak schools were required to close This unexpected school closure allowed for the operation of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) under the Emergency School Closure Guidelines Operation of SFSP along with multiple USDA nationwide waivers allowed schools to provide meals to all children ages 0 to 18 years at all sites distributing meals

For School Year 2020-21 although the typical school day model may look significantly different schools will be ldquoopenrdquo Therefore USDA is requiring schools to operate School Meal Programs which provides meals for enrolled students

only This will result in a change to meal access for children from birth to 5 Please consider this change and the needs of your families when planning for times when a center is not operating

COVID-19 Resource to Address Food Insecurity Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) is a new emergency food benefit that provides families with funds to pay for meals during school closures due to COVID-19 in spring of 2020 All households with children in grades K-12 that were approved for free or reduced-price school meals during the last school year or who attended a school where meals were free for all students are eligible for P-EBT P-EBT is not subject to public charge and will not affect immigration status

How do families get P-EBT

If child(ren) were approved for free or reduced-price school meals and the family DOES get Basic Food benefits Families do not need to do anything to get P-EBT They will have received these one-time benefits on their EBT card automatically in early July

If child(ren) were approved for free or reduced-price school meals and the family DOES NOT get Basic Food benefits Families should apply now for P-EBT at wwwwashingtonconnectionorg or by calling 877-501-2233 The deadline to apply is Aug 31 at 5 pm

For more information on P-EBT visit wwwwashingtonconnectionorg OSPI resources about P-EBT are available here including an easy to understand Parent Flyer available in multiple languages

Washington State Budget Projected Deficit The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a major hit to the statersquos economy and the state budget impact is extensive While DCYF is taking every action possible to continue serving children and families planning for budget reductions is a necessary step To address the deficit in the short term Governor Jay Inslee is implementing furloughs for many state employees from June 28 through November 2020 We will continue to update contractors as more information becomes available

Updated Immunization Requirements The State Board of Health (SBOH) has approved changes to Chapter 246-105 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) concerning school and child care immunization policy These rules apply to all public and private schools and licensed child care centers in Washington State including Early Childhood Education and Assi stance Program (ECEAP) providers Effective Aug 1 2020 the update

Requires medically verified immunization records for school and child care entry

Clarifies conditional status in regards to school and child care immunization requirements and implementation Requires a new Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) each year to re -certify the childrsquos immunization records

Under the new regulations children may begin school or child care only if they received all of the required immunizations they are due to receive and submitted medically verifiable records on or before the first day of attendance

To minimize barriers and to avoid unintentionally contributing to disproportionality contractors may request to place a child on an alternative attendance plan to enroll a child in ECEAP until the child can begin a series for immunizations The DOH has created a useful resource that includes resources for parents and staff to help them navigate these new requirements You can find more information here on the ECEAP page
