TO: Local Early Childhood Education Site Supervisors FROM: Spokane Falls Community College ECED& 191 Course Faculty: Cathy Meier [email protected] 509-533-3619 Building 16 Room 122 3410 W. Fort George Wright Dr. / MS 3160 Spokane, WA 99224 DATE: 2015-2016 Academic Year SUBJECT: PLACEMENT OF AN ECED STUDENT IN YOUR PROGRAM Our Early Childhood Education Program at SFCC includes this practicum course, ECED 191 Practicum: Observation and Assessment, which requires students to volunteer 66 hours of work in an early childhood setting. For a site to be approved, there needs to be someone qualified to act as the student’s site supervisor. The site supervisor, most often the lead teacher in the classroom where the student will be completing hours and assignments, will act as the site supervisor, although sometimes the director may be designated as site supervisor. In order to provide mentoring to a practicum student, a site supervisor is required to hold a degree in early childhood education. The goal of the course is to give students experience in the field of early childhood education pertaining to the topic observation and assessment of children. Each student will sign a professionalism agreement form, attached to this memo. We expect the student to assist in the classroom under the supervision and direction of the regular program staff. Volunteers should not be left alone with children, nor counted in your teacher/child ratios. An observational or active participation role would be acceptable to the college, but we encourage as much active participation as you are comfortable with allowing. During the course, while completing hours, students will need to complete observation and assessment of one child in order to complete a child portfolio. This assignment is attached to this memo, and students must obtain prior approval from you and from the child’s parent before completing this assignment. Should any problems arise due to the placement of the student in your program, I would appreciate being notified immediately. The student will sign a Permission to Release Information Form so we can communicate. Here are the outcomes for the course: 1. Identify characteristics and signs of growth, development, learning, and social behaviors 2. Collect factual, descriptive information using a variety of tools i.e. running records, anecdotal records, checklists, time and event samples, portfolios, and developmental continuums. 3. Record information in an appropriate manner for future interpretation 09/2016
