T o the ancient Jews the Passove r was symbolic of freedom , a new life with release from death and fear . To other peoples throughout the world the festi vals of Spring ce lebrate the renewed fertil ity of flocks and fi eld and to the Christian world Easte r symbolizes the resurrection of life against the somber backdrop of passing death .

Perhaps the Easter Bunny, the ittl e chickens and the gail

eggs seem silly but the} say again the simple message of

Spring, for out of Winte r comes a new Summer, out of death a new life , out of ruin a new c rea tion, out of despair a new hope. Even as it is in the world of Nature , so it can be with Man's spirit . The old order passes but onl y that room may be made for the fa irer order that is to come .

CAMPO NEWS by FAY rARR!S - GR 8- 53\:Hi

The board members of the Mr. Empire Republican Women met at the home of Marie Lindemann in Campo on Monday, March 20 . Those present were Gertrude Haskell, Angela Baum, Muriel Utt, Phoebe Thompson and Fay Farris. The next regular meeting will be held on Thursday, April 6. It will be a breakfast at the Hobart House in Pine Valley at 9 AM after which the entire group will go to the home of Mary Griswold in Pine Valley for the meeting to hear the county president Eleanor Ring give a talk .

Mt . Empire Woman's Club met at the home of Ellabella Tondro in Pine Valley for luncheon Wednesday , March 22. There were 34 members and guests present. The luncheon consisted of Mandarin Salad and hot orange rolls and coffee. The mystery prize was won by the hostess's sister who has been her house guest and who will soon return to her home in the East. The style show known as "Spring

time in the Mountains" sponsored by the Mt. Empire Woman's Club was held on Friday evening at the Pine Valley Club House and was a huge success in spite of the ra in. The hall was like a garden with bouquets of stock , daffodils and roses on all the tables throughout the room. The fashions were from J. C . Penney Co . of EI Cajon and were received with great applause . The commentator Ruth Woolman was outstanding and the models are to be complimented on their performance . Last but not least was the fine program of dancers from the Starlet Smdio of Dance in Lakeside . which included a few pupils from the Campo class. which is held each Thursday evening at the Mt .Whirler 's Square Dance Club· House in Campo . They are known as the Campo Caporettes, and included Jennifer

Cogen, Debbie and Linda Biddle. Penny Hardesty, Suzanna Howard and Georgine Oakey . Cathy Clark of Campo danced two solo num bers. We can be very proud of all these girls. Susie Stalker from the San Diego area, a four year old, just about stole the show with her singing and dancing. Cream puffs with vanilla fillings, coffee and 1ot chocolate were served for re freshments for which Catherine :-iadley, Muriel Utt and Gertrude Haskell were responsible!

It has been reported that Anita Davis of Campo has entered the c~ntest for "Queen of the Pine Valley Fireman's Ball " to be held on May 6 at the Pine y alley Club House. She is the daughter of the Campo Postmaster, and it ishoped all Campo residents will help he1 win by placing money in the con tainers to be found in various business places in the Campo area. Her name and picture will be found on the containers. The can didate receiving the largest a mount of money will be crowned "'Queen·· at the Ball , and this money will be used for Charity. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cozby of Lake

Morena have just returned from a trip to San Joaquin Valley where they attended the wedding of their niece.

Gardener's Checklist 1. Primrose push up taller stems and large r flowers when fertilized in the spring . 2 . Begonia tubers started in flats may be transplanted when they have about three inches of top growrh. 3. Dahlias rna y be planted from now into May. Be sure to set the stake at the time you plant . lL might injure the tuber if driven in later .

4. Feed Azaleas and Camellias when they've finished blooming. Use a special acid plant food and supplement it later with liquid fish.
