We All Go Away Like An Echo Of Sad Laughter
As I age I no longer wipe
away the tears, neither does
God, we watch the hungry on
the church steps searching
in the dirty melting snow.
Lemons & Prairie Dogs
Most poetry sticks its
fingers down my throat
with nauseating boredom
& makes my teeth ache
I would rather
lick sunlight from a lemon
eat fragrance from a rose
drink blood from a pomegranate
hear crickets fiddle
watch stars vanish in mist
But a good poem is
lightning splitting an oak
a mountain of ebony basalt
butter melting on jalapeno cornbread
petrified wood
the Mona Lisa’s smile
a prairie dog town
A tiger devouring
my mother.
Caitlin
for Dylan Thomas’ lady
Sometimes you can be in a turquoise
sea of pelicans, gazing at indigo
jungles climbing crimson mountains
When realization is laid like a brick
in the eye, without you, I am nothing
A worm with no soil
a bird with no nest
a priest with no church
a drum with no hands
A baby with no mother or father
a wolf with no den
a woodpecker with no tree
a teacher with no students
A mountain with no animals
a rich man with no money
a guitar with no strings
God with no universe
You are all I need to continue
when I’m far from home, I
dream of your face and it
always leads me from the fog.
A Giraffe Sandwich
A curse hung in my ear, I got
the bottle, poured myself a
drink, and lit a cigarette
Whiskey calmed my nerves, I
was half asleep, I dreamed about
giant catfish in the river
My mother told me some were
so big alligators left them alone,
I caught one, its head was the
size of a man’s torso, I shouted
Mother must not have heard, the
catfish kept trying to dive, I finally
let it go, I awoke like a hungry
tiger eating a giraffe sandwich.
Washing Machine Blues
In the laundromat my
voluptuous neighbor & I
watched our dirty clothes
make soapy love
"Some people are beautiful
until they open their mouths"
she yawned "Some are only
fantastic when expressing
their personal vision"
"People without vision are
not only blind but they are
less than strutting peacocks"
Her head tilted to one side
like a Picasso looking in
thought into my eyes
She discovered the Amazon,
the Sahara, Rachmaninoff, &
Coltrane in the gray rain.
A Dream Within A Dream At Work
A lightning bug flew
in my window as I
sat in my car on break
I captured it gently giving
it freedom watching it
flutter out into the morning
twilight, I fired my pipe
& blew a few smoke rings
A book lay beside me, for
some reason I couldn't
bring myself to read it
I thought about freedom
& wished I could fly
Just then a train pulled
by a Canadian Pacific
engine rumbled behind me
Contorted faces were
streaming by, some
looking out or ahead
I wondered if any were
lost in a dream like I was
Not knowing where they
were going or where they
came from, my only wish
was I were with them,
headed for anywhere
Then I thought about
Adolf Hitler & canceled
my wish.
Portrait At 37
Living each painting
in a dark palette of
potato eaters & miners
Colors drove him mad,
lips quivering with emotion,
tears filling his eyes
His painting of Sorrow, a
naked, pregnant, starving
woman, he lived with in
Amsterdam
Capturing rivers, making
flowers grow, old empty
shoes dance
His brother loved him
& now the world.

Voices of Nature
My garden of dust and lust
has sixty seasons of tastes
and sings with fine poetry
Orange Chinese-lanterns with
voices of Li Po and Tu Fu
Purple blue Concord grapes
with voices of Dylan Thomas
and Edgar Allan Poe
Juicy blackberries with voices of
Walt Whitman and Longfellow
Green and red onions with voices of
Bukowski and William S. Burroughs
Plum and beefsteak tomatoes with
voices of Ginsberg, Corso, and Kerouac
Dwarf sour cherry tree with voices
of Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz
Under the white blanket of snow the
poets rest until the spring wind calls,
for their magic beauty to fill the air.
The Revolution Of Love
When my lady is happy, singing
in Spanish and French and I smell
the perfume of Mexican vanilla,
cinnamon, cloves, cilantro, and sage
The cats are purring on the bed
and the snow is melting and chives,
garlic, daffodils, and grapes are
looking at the sun with love
I smile inside I no longer care how
much money I have or owe, or that
I don’t drive or my hair is thinning or
that I’m closer to death than life
I put another quarter in the parking
meter, laugh at the shadows and think,
my turn to pull the rabbit from the hat.
The Red Guitar
I’m gonna let my
red guitar recite a
poem and make
sweet love to you
A hummingbird kiss
a waterfall song
a shooting star zing
a butterfly dance
You have got me
in your magic trance
all I want is your
love romance
Sweet lady of my
dreams, please please
please be there for me
As I am for you now
tomorrow and forever.

My First and Last Will
I sign all cards
to her with the
same instructions
Dear wife,
I want to die
five minutes
before you
After that it’s
all up to you.
Take a Bite Off The Sun
At the edge of the sky
Near the bottom of the universe
Smell the moon
Feel the wind on your face
Hold the sun
Take a bite.
Mopping The Floors With Love
I hadn’t seen her in thirty
years, she was a big boned
woman with style all over
Her mahogany gravel voice
was midnight graveyard
and lonesome freight train
She sang about swinging a
mop to feed her hungry babies,
I slid into the shadows, lit a
Marlboro and sipped rye whiskey
When she finished I vanished
like Geronimo into Mexico.
