HOW ECOCOOLING SYSTEMS WORK:Ventilation: EnergyefficientECfansmovefreshairthroughthebuildingataspecifiedflowrate.

Attemperation: Using the EcoCooling control system hot exhaust air is mixed with cold external air to supply air at a constant temperature.

Evaporative Cooling: Air is passed over a wetted cooling pad, the air temperature is reduced as the water evaporates.

Controls: EcoCooling’s advanced control system has been developed based on our extensive experience in fresh air cooling of IT equipment. It automatically optimises the energy savings and operation of the system once commissioned.

Filtration: EcoCooling offers a number of filtration options to satisfy the airquality levels required in different IT environments.

ENERGY EFFICIENT IT AND COMMS ROOM COOLINGFree Cooling:Whileevaporativecooling isanextremelyefficientwayofprovidingcoolingonhotdays, the majority of savings come from free cooling. This is because most of the time in the UK the weather is colder than the desired supply temperature. It is during these cooler periods that the CREC (Computer Room Evaporative Cooler), fresh air ventilation and attemperation system can exploit free cooling.

ENERGY EFFICIENT EC FANS:As the majority of power used when the system is in free cooling mode is to drive the fans, EcoCooling incorporates low energy EC (Electronically Commutated) technology into all its IT systems and products. The majority of power savings can be made by optimising the control of the fans via the following methods:

• Fan speed is automatically adjusted by EcoCooling controls to meet cooling demands, lowering fan energy use.

• Low energy use at slower speeds (1/2 speed reduces energy consumption by 85%), meaningpartialpopulationofroomsisefficient.

IT INDUSTRY COOLING GUIDELINES

ASHRAE: Temperature, humidity and contamination must all be considered when designing a cooling system for a server room or data centre. The graph at the bottom shows the ASHRAE recommended allowable zones for temperature and humidity and the EcoCooling operating envelope:

ASHRAE: While ASHRAE has an allowable zone from 15-32°C, care should be taken as server ventilation has been shown to increase its energy use at temperatures over 25°C. EcoCooling: EcoCooling systems can provide supply air temperatures below 25°C all year round in the UK. Control systems provide close control (+/-1°C) and a large percentage of the year 16°C supply air temperature delivery is achievable.

ASHRAE: The ASHRAE allowable zone is between 20-80% relative humidity. Low hu-midity can damage legacy equipment, however there is little evidence for detrimen-tal effects of high or low humidity on modern equipment in IT environments.

EcoCooling: The EcoCooling control system can adjust the supply set points auto-matically within the system to ensure that relative humidity is kept within the set point limits.

CONTAMINANTS: As EcoCooling uses fresh air systems, all IT cooling systems can be designed with G4/EU4 grade filtrationatboththesupplyandrecirculationpoints.FiltrationuptoF7isavailableuponrequest.

An EcoCooling control panel is integral to the success of a CREC installation. The control system is Schneider Crouzet and the program has been developed by EcoCooling in-house over the last 10 years to optimise both the energy savings and operation of the CREC system.

CONTROL SYSTEMS

KEY FEATURES:

• Versatile Communication Options: Modbus TCP/IP allows for easy links into most major BMS systems and an in built VNC server allows the HMI to be viewed remotely on most mobile phones. EcoCooling can assist with converting data and SMPT logging on request (e.g. Provide sample scripts).

• Resilience: All systems are ‘fail-safe’ and incorporate manual control and back-up power options to ensure fans may be run independently if communication with the PLC is lost.

• Redundancy: All key sensors are duplicated and refrigeration can be automatically activated as a backup option.

• Alarm Notification: The control system automatically notifies the BMSsystem in the event of a problem. Email notification is also availableonrequest.Thecontrolsystemisdirectlylinkedtothefiresystem, whenactivated it automatically closes fire dampers and switches on thebackup.

• Historical Data and Event Logging: The HMI can log and present different variables as a trend display. Chosen data can be stored on the HMI for download at a later point via USB. This data can also be emailed after a fixedtimeintervalchosenbytheuser.

• Remote Commissioning - EcoCooling offer a remote commissioning service, saving time and money, particularly in foreign locations.

Communication

The EcoCooling CREC system can help data centres achieve PUEs of below 1.1. Exploiting the EC fan technology can reduce the amount of power required further, meaning PUEs of 1.05 are now achievable in the right environments.

SAVINGS AND PERFORMANCE DATAThe EcoCooling savings calculator can estimate the possible energy savings for all of our systems based on historical weather data. We can perform cost analysis for any size data centre or comms room in most locations worldwide. Please contact us for more information.

WHAT DOES IT ME FOR ME?

• Increased speed control:EC technology enables continuous adjustment of the fan speed to meet the cooling demands of the data centre. EcoCooling control systems are designed to take advantage of the energy savings which can be gained by modulating fan speed.

What does EC mean?EC stands for Electronically Commutated, which meansthefanisfittedwithapermanentmagnetmotor (PMM).

What products use it?All ECT units use EC fans.Theyarespecifiedby EcoCooling for any CREC/ECP systems as standard.

ENERGY SAVING EC FANS

EC Fan Speed/Power Relationship Curve

• Low power usage at partial loads:The graph to the right shows the relationship between fan speed and power utilisation. The power/speed relationship is subjected to a x3 relationship, meaning that at half the speed the fan will be using an eighth of the electricity. Operating the EcoCooling system at half speed reduces the fan energy use by over 85%.

When fresh air is used in a data centre there can be a risk of either particulate or gaseous contamination. The quality of the air in the locality of the data centre can affect the fea-sibility of the use of fresh air.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat temperatures can be expected using a CREC?In the UK the temperature will not go above 23°C.

What will be the levels of humidity? The CREC control system dynamically changes the air supply temperature to control RH levels. In the UK this can ensure 100% compliance with ASHRAE Class 1 Allowable standards for Relative Humidity.

How is the air filtered?ThestandardCREChasalowleveloffiltration.ThiscanbesupplementedbyG3pre-filtersandG4panelfilters.

How much maintenance is required? It is normal to maintain an EcoCooling CREC every 3 months. A number or approved contractors can provide maintenance.

How long do the filter pads last?Filter pads last from 3 to 5 years.

What happens in freezing conditions? The CRECs automatically drain when not in cooling mode. The water supply system is also automatically drained to prevent frost damage in cold weather.

Can you catch Legionnaires’ disease from an EcoCooling Evaporative Cooler? No, primarily because the circulating water is less than 20°C and no droplets are formed. An EcoCooler is classed as low risk (the same as a hot and cold water supply system). A legionella risk assessment is produced as part of the commissioning process.

Is the water re-circulated?Yes, the water is re-circulated until the evaporation has concentrated it to its scaling point or when the cooling is turned off and the cooler automatically drains.

What is the warranty? The EcoCooling CREC has a parts-only warranty of 2 years.

Is the EcoCooling CREC suitable for all IT equipment?Older equipment such as main frame computers and paper media systems require close control of relative humidity and so evaporative cooling cannot be used.

Is the EcoCooling CREC suitable for all global locations and climates? No, it is not suitable for tropical climates where the wet bulb temperature of the ambient air can exceed 25°C. EcoCoolingcanprovide specificadviceonperformance foranylocation in the world.

What is the availability of spare parts?EcoCooling holds a complete inventory of spare parts in the UK. Is the EcoCooling CREC CE marked? All EcoCooling ECP products are CE marked using UK based approved testing and assessment facilities.
