Talk 1:Unity in Christ in Service The scandal of the Philippines – three thousand denominations registered with the government (plus many independent Pentecostal churches!). What do non-Christians think when they see this? We are called to unity of heart between Christians personally and between churches Unity of heart, not necessarily organizationally – my brothers each run their homes in different ways, but we are still one family together! The Importance of Unity John 17.20-23: Jesus feels the importance of unity, so prays that we may be one (20/21) Our unity is based on and demonstrates the unity of Jesus with the Father (21) “So that the world may believe that you have sent me” (21, 23) Jesus has given us his glory, so that we may be one together (22) The Basis of Unity Ephesians 4.3-6: God has brought us into one spiritual family together, but we are commanded to “keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace”. One body – one Spirit – one hope – one Lord – one faith – one baptism – one God and Father The means to unity Colossians 3 Right motives and attitudes to life (1 and 2) Right behaviour (5-9) Consciously adopt right inter-ethnic and inter-cultural attitudes (10 and 11) How to relate to each other (12-14)

Right inter-personal relationships (18-23 and 4.1) The call to unity leads on to our need of prayer (4.2) and to our witness (4.2) The results of unity We have already seen that our loving unity together shows people that Jesus is indeed God’s saving messenger to the world. Our unity demonstrates the truth of Jesus as Saviour. Acts 2.42-47: the united life and witness of the early Christians led to people being added to the church each day That is our aim too – that the multitudes

of Chinese and other peoples might turn

to Jesus in saving faith and follow him

as his servants too.

Talk 2: Spiritual Leadership and

Discipleship Every culture has its own patterns of leadership and these inevitably influence the Christian church. Chinese patterns of leadership are generally influenced by the Confucian background of pyramid-style relationships. The traditional five relationships can easily be transferred into the life of the Christian church. Prince/pastor or Christian leader with his/her people; parent and child; husband and wife; older brother/sister and younger brother/sister; friend and friend. The senior expects filial respect, obedience and honour, but he/she also has the duty of nurturing, caring and providing for those below him/her. While traditional cultural patterns of leadership and discipleship have much which benefits the church, we also need to adapt them in accordance with biblical teaching.

Mark 10.35-45

a) James’ and John’s request

(10.35-37): “do for us whatever

we ask” and “sit at your right

and … left in your glory”.

Jesus’ glory is his cross!

b) Jesus’ question (38-40): “Can

you drink …or be baptised”

The disciples’ confident “we

can” – indeed they hungered for

such glory! But again they

misunderstood Jesus’ meaning. c) The other disciples’ reaction

(41): jealousy and rivalry for positions of honour.

d) Jesus’ teaching on true leadership (42-45): not authority, but becoming a servant; leadership = “slave of all”. Jesus himself came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. He suffered as a ransom in our place.

Our aim is to serve and to give, not to be honoured or to receive. Like Jesus we are willing to suffer for the salvation of our people. Jesus, and our aim is for “many” – not just Israel, but also the Gentiles, not just our fellow Chinese, but all peoples.

John 13.1-16

Jesus’ teaching in Mark 10 is

worked out in the washing of the

feet in John 13.

Jesus is King of kings, the Lord and

Messiah. He came from glory with

his Father and he will return to his

Father’s glory. But he takes the

position of a slave; fetches a bowl of

water and a towel; strips off his

outer clothing; takes the role of a

slave and washes their feet (feet are

so dishonourable!).

Such humility! Such a spirit of

service and self-giving!

Monthly Bulletin 8/2014 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from

The disciples don’t find it easy to receive his service (6-8). Did they expect Jesus to maintain a proper position of dignity and authority? How will the members of our churches react if our leaders follow Jesus’ model of humble self-giving service? Can a Roman Catholic or Anglican archbishop follow Jesus’ pattern of leadership? Can our pastors behave like Jesus? Will that be accepted?

Talk 3: Sanctification and

Growth in the Christian life

We cannot remain static in the Christian

life – we either grow in Christ or we

gradually become cold in our faith and

backslide (as in the Book of Hebrews).

In the Gospels we notice people coming

ever closer to Jesus or moving away

from him. As Christians we are to

become more and more like Jesus,

looking forward to the final day when

we shall be perfectly like him in glory.

Likewise we are to grow closer and

closer in our relationship of love with

him, looking forward to the great day

when we shall be fully one with him in

perfect love.

And we are to grow in holiness,

becoming more and more like Jesus in

his love, relationships, moral purity,

ambitions and purpose in life.

1 Peter 2.2

Babies are beautiful and we all admire

them. But 20-year-old babies are a

tragedy!

We are called to grow in our salvation,

all that God in Christ by his Spirit has

done for us.

The basis for our growth is that we

have “tasted that the Lord is good” (2.3)

Monthly Bulletin 8/2014 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from

6

The context is right relationships with other people – no deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander. Our growth in Christ is within the fellowship of the church (2.5) so that together with our sisters and brothers we may offer true “spiritual sacrifices” Ephesians 4.14 Immature Christians can be ensnared by “every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men”. Our need for truth and love – the working of the Holy Spirit Growth should be into deepening relationship with Jesus - he is the head of the body and also our head Each member of the body does his/her work within the fellowship of the church. And we grow in love, “supporting” one another. Our aim is “that the body of Christ be built up” and we attain “unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God” John 20.21

Our service of the Lord is to be just like

Jesus’ – “Just as the Father has sent me”.

How did the Father send Jesus? In

humble service in the form of a servant;

to identify with his surrounding culture,

but without sin; to bring salvation to the

world (not just his own Jewish people);

to teach and encourage his disciples;

Jesus was sent to show people God’s love.

Jesus gave the troubled disciples a

greeting of peace. He showed them his

hands and side to demonstrate the truth

and reality of his life-giving resurrection.

He gave them the Holy Spirit 20.22) and

the power to forgive people’s sins – what

a ministry to be able to minister Jesus’

gift of cleansing from all sin!

time flies when you are having fun right?! seriously!! couldn't believe 3mths has flown by already!! so my time in india ended couple of days ago when I took the midnight flight via malaysia back to hk. i had mixed feelings for my departure. on the one hand, i didnt want to say goodbye to the country i learnt to love; a place with fascinating culture and tradition; and, with some of the most hospitable people ive ever met. but on the other hand, i was beyond ready for a more settling environment, not having to be on high alert every waking moment of my time; and seriously, my clothes needed to be washed properly by a washing machine, because no matter how long i soaked them or how hard i scrubbed them, they still smell of sweat!! >.<

so as i mentioned on my last news update, i had the opportunity to travel down to south india for the remaining time i had as the majority of the projects the ngo- pici, involved in are based there. i have to say the time i spent in the south felt more like a time spent in a completely different country. no doubt this experience was eye opening and has given me a slight insight on how vast this country is and how different the north is to the south.

in addition to being blessed with this new

insight, He has also blessed me greatly

by first forcing me out of my comfort

zone. as many of you already know how

much i dis l ike preaching, and so

preaching i was told to do. basically the only instruction i was given was, "you are preaching in my church next sunday (6days away), a 45mins sermon." i didn't have the time i need to prepare (ie. 6mths would be ideal!); i had no idea what the congregation was like; i had no resources (apart from my niv and a 2g phone network); and no clue what it should be on. but as always, He had my back covered. He showed me once again, everything is possible through Him. ptl!

"so what now?" i hear you ask. i wish i

can tell you im taking things easy after

the intense 3mths. but instead, im busy

busy catching up on the online course

which i signed up 4wks ago. it is a class

offered by the Jesus school i attended,

on the subject of, "ministry to sexually

exploited and trafficked children." my

experience in thailand last dec really

impacted me greatly and i felt i need to

equip myself in this area, which means

returning to school. and in couple of

weeks time, il also b taking another

class on, "social advocacy" at the Jesus

school campus. so, il b spending a

month in the states departing on the

26th july. not only will i b attending the

two classes, il also take this opportunity

to meet up with the director of pici. it

will be a time for us to discuss my role

in the org and how we can work

together to implement their vision and

to extend His Kingdom. il also be

attending my very good friend's

wedding, and to catch up with friends

in the west coast. after this trip, il b

returning to india for the duration of my

visa, which is until oct 15th.

well, this is all my bross and sisss. please continue to remember me in ur thoughts and prayers as i need extra wisdom for the classes and also extra energy for the coming month. God bless.

cynical (20 jun) i had the most frustrating conversation, almost turn-ed into an argument type of conversation with a friend about taxi drivers here in india couple of days ago.

so i would generally avoid traveling in cabs here in india because i have heard way too many unpleasant stories of how people had been cheated n ive seen it happened with my own eyes too. but my friend, a local indian guy from calcutta didn't think that any taxi driver actually cheats or that only 1% of them do. even though ive never been in a cab here in india by myself, i disagreed with him whole heartedly.

so today i had to take a cab to the airport alone. i was a little worried, to the point i actually prayed for this journey, which i don't have a habit of doing.

but God is good! He sent me a nice cab

drive who asked if i was ready before

we leave for the airport, moved aside to

the slow lane when he saw a flashing

police vehicle in the rear mirror far

away (this doesn't happen in india!), n

when he found out that i gave him

20rps tips he had a big smile on his face

and thanked me.

i know God is using this to tell me that i

need to stop being so cynical and that

there r nice cab drivers around. in fact i

can't stereotype them just because ive

heard stories or seen it happened or

have even expedienced it before.

because not everyone are the same n

there are kind hearted people around.

thank you Jesus.

incident (23june)

like most people, i do

have a habit of nodding

off on bus n car rides. n

yes, it is a dangerous

place to fall asleep on

especially in india.

so i went with my new friend- coline, to a place that's 2hrs bus ride away. on the way back, we decided to sit separately as we both wanted window seats.

Coline

About 15mins into the journey, a man sat on my bench which is a wide three seater. he was sitting on the aisle seat on the left. but because the sun was shining into... the bus, i moved from the right to sit between the middle n the right hand side seats.

im not dumb. i was well aware that there

is a risk sitting with a man on the same

bench n on a bus too. n i tried my best to

stay awake but the heat of the day n the

breeze from the ride totally sent my

already exhausted body n mind to a dose.

n my alertness gone with the wind.

a few seconds, it was only a few seconds

n that was all it takes....

all of a sudden i felt a hand brushed pass

my left thigh. instantly i opened up my

eyes n looked to my left. the guy is

asleep too then what could that be? i

fixed my stare to the guy for a gd few

seconds n bingo! he had his eyes slightly

opened n our eyes met. IT WAS

YOU!!!!!!! GUILTY AS CHARGED!!!!

nothing I could do now, as i didn't catch

him in the act, but judy, stay awake n

fully alert for the rest of the journey

please!!!

thank you for praying

peeps! the message i

delivered last sunday

went well. in fact, i

actually enjoyed it very

much as the small

congregation was very

responsive.

funny/embarrassing moment- at

the start of the message, i greeted

them (as u do) but they were a little

reserved n didn't make much noise.

so i asked them if they didn't have

any breakfast and that they are

hungry n have no energy. some

replied, n the translator actually

looked at me n said, 'actually they

are hungry. these r very poor people,

their stomachs are rarely full."

so one thing ive learnt from this

experience is that not only u need to

know ur congregation but also

understanding their living condition

n environment.

blessed 4 days (28jun) ive been up on the hill station by myself last few days. before i arrived, i thought i was only going to be here for couple of nights n i was only here for some cooler weather. this thought remained the same, or even stronger after i checked into my £5/night hostel room. With a squatty potty without a flush, no sink in the bath room (nor in the room), no hot water n yellow freezing water with black bits running from the tap. i was pretty certain that id leave after couple of nights.

but i was wrong. after the non disrupted

10hrs of sleep in the first night, i realised

the 3months of travelling n the unbearable

summer heat is finally catching up on me. i

was beyond exhausted.

so last few days ive been sitting in front of

a man-made lake watching the local

tourists paddling on the mickey mouse

paddle boats, reading, praying, reflecting,

catching up on my emails n enjoying the

19°c weather. im looking forward to

another night of non disrupted 10hrs of

sleep under 2heavy blankets in my warm

sleeping bag, before im due to leave for the

40°c heat down in the chaotic city again

tomorrow.

thank you Jesus for this time where i can

chill, do nothing n get closer to You. n to

be able to fully relax on the little empty

balcony You provided in the boat house.

thank you!

differences between the

north n the south (13jul)

the feeling of being in

south india is strange.

although the people still

look the same n the

traffic is just as chaotic,

everything else is

different.

first there is the language.

they say hindi is india's

national language, well

not many people speak

hindi in the state of tamil

nadu. a tamil i met told

me that when he travels

to the north, he uses

english to communicate

to his own countrymen.

then there's the religion. ive been told that

70-80% of the population in the state of

kerala are christian because christianity

actually arrived to india way earlier than

many other european counties- thanks to

thomas the apostle. in fact, the people

actually call this place 'God's own country'!

food here in the south is vastly different

too. the dishes dosa n idly you won't easily

find in the north. pretty much everything is

cooked with coconut oil. beef is widely

available n they even serve duck too!

the buildings here are also different. ive

seen so many european style churches n

buildings here its unbelievable! some are

alot grander than the ones back home!!

as i said, although the people look the

same, i found people in the south alot laid

back. when i was at the calcutta airport, as

soon as i walked out, the taxi drivers will

stick to u like a piece of chewing gum. but

here, as soon as u said no, they will walk

away, one even pointed me to the direction

of the train station when i told him im

getting the train coz its alot cheaper.

this country is strange. very strange.
