I can define and sequence the 6 divisions of life in ecology.
I can do that ?* I can do that with review
I can't do that

Ecology• Ecology is the study of interactions that occur among organisms and their environments.
• Ecologists study the ABC’s of Ecology.
> Abiotic Factors (nonliving parts of the environment)
> Biotic Factors (living parts of the environment)
> Cycles and Change

• Ecologists organize areas on earth that support life into smaller levels (hierarchy). In the following slides, you will learn about these divisions.

Life on Earth The amount of energy that reaches Earth from the Sun helps make the temperature just right for life.
The other planets in our solar system either receive too much or not enough of the sun’s energy to support life.

The part of Earth that supports life is the biosphere (BI uh sfihr).
The biosphere includes the
• top portion of Earth’s crust,
• all the waters that cover Earth’s surface, and
• the atmosphere that surrounds Earth.

The Biosphere
• The biosphere is made up of different environments that are home to different kinds of organisms.
• The two primary factors that determine the type of plants and animals that will exist in these areas are amount of sunlight and amount of rainfall.

Think about it.• What is the major factor that determines the amount of sunlight an area receives?
The factor is location on the earth. Different latitudes on earth receive different angles of the sun’s energy which influences the climate of an area.

Climate ZonesThere are three major climate zones on the earth due to the amount of sunlight these areas receive.
• Tropical Zone Beginning at the equator to 30° N and S (hot, humid, and rainy climate).
• Temperate Zone –From 30° to 60° N and S (4 distinct seasons, warm summers and cold winters)
• Polar Zone – From 60° to 90° N and S (cold and dry climate)
