Senior Survival (?)
Isaac Bunch
Period 2
Family Profile and CareerI will be 20 years old
and a junior at Columbia University
So I will be single, have no children, and probably have an unpaid internship somewhere in New York
LivingOn campus
housing at $6,170 per year is guaranteed all four years
No landline phone, utilities bill or property tax
Cell phone $9.99/month
TransportationColumbia students ride
the subway for free
I won’t have a car because there is nowhere to park in New York
I will walk everywhere else
FoodI will mainly rely on my
college meal plan for food
This comes to a cost of $2,100 per semester or $4,200 per year
SundriesShampoo $2.79
Soap (4 pack) $4.79
Deodorant $1.97
Toothpaste $1.98
Mouthwash $ 5.79
Dental Floss $1.98
TOTAL: $77.20 per year

ClothingI am not much of a
clothes shopper and already own pretty much all that I will need
For the year I should only need about $10 per month to buy something every few months and maintain a minimum wardrobe
Entertainment & RecreationMy Columbia ID card gets
me into just about any museum or cultural location for free
Red Bulls Soccer games: $30 per game (3 time per year)
Eating out $45 per month
TOTAL: $52.50 per month
Vacationing I would like to take the
train up to Poughkeepsie to visit my aunt and uncle a few times per year
A round trip ticket on Metro North Railroad costs $39 but I will not have to pay for anything else after arriving in Poughkeepsie
$39 (3 times per year)= $117 annually
Where will I go when I’m sick?I should be covered
under my parents plan until I am 26 years old
But it would cost $1,638 annually for basic coverage and $2,344 for comprehensive coverage through my school
EducationThere is the little matter of
college tuition which comes out to $50,000 per year
Textbooks come in at about $1,000 per year but there is no way to get an exact figure on that just yet
But much of this money is already in my college fund and my parents have agreed to pay for the rest
MiscellaneousI would need to spend
around $20 dollars for a haircut three times per year
Gym membership is free at school
My parents usually give me money to buy gifts for the other parent
Final BudgetNot counting the costs of
tuition and textbooks my lifestyle during my junior year of college will end up costing 11,494 dollars and twenty cents
Seeing as I won’t be employed during this time period I will need to rely on my family heavily during my college years
