Page 16: economic

Now that FDR has been elected President he promised to “fix” the United States Economy…which may not be “fixable”…..

Page 17: economic

FDR’s program/programs to fix the economy

I may not know how to do this, but I will get some people who do.

I will call them my BRAIN TRUST

Page 18: economic

Relief, Recovery, Reform.

Page 19: economic

Roosevelt utilizes radio technology to deliver frank, honest and inspirational speeches to the common American citizen.

It is like he is Speaking directly to me

I feel better already…

Page 20: economic
Page 21: economic

FDR shuts down all the banks.

Has a commission go in and see which ones are “good” and which ones are “bad”.

The “good” ones will re-open and the bad ones will remain closed…forever.

People begin to put their money back into the system.

Page 22: economic

Insures people’s savings deposits…up to $250,000

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

So no more runs on the bank…and no more of this.

Page 23: economic

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), 1933: employed young adults to perform unskilled work for the federal government

Civil Works Administration (CWA), 1933: provided temporary jobs to millions of unemployed

Works Progress Administration (WPA), 1935: a reiteration of the PWA, created useful work for skilled workers

Page 25: economic

Tennessee Valley Authority

Put people to work making dams and bringing hydro-electric power to a 9 state region

Page 26: economic

Before all of this Great Depression mess, businesses “paid” for your retirement.

But because of the G.P. a lot of business went bankrupt, leaving many who retired without any means of income or support.

Page 27: economic

SO the Federal Government sort of took that role on with The Social Security Act.

The government through taxes set aside money for people when they hit a certain age.

The “original age” was 65

Then they changed it to 66…. Now it’s 67….

It provided people with “some sort” of income. But it has been suggested that it is not a retirement plan but “social insurance”

So ya might want to planAhead…

Page 28: economic

Do you remember me?I was the solution for all your

Needs. But “some” people thoughtthat “I” was the problem.

And they decided to get “rid” of me for “good”…stupid 18th

Amendment.

Page 29: economic

But now with the G.D.people are sick of the

Violence…and they wanta way to escape the sad

aspects of the depression. So FDR and a host of others

decided to repeal prohibition!!!

Nothing like a depressant to chase the blues away

Page 30: economic

Thank you FDR…thank you for the21st Amendment!!!

Game back on!!!!This guy next to

me is creapy

Page 31: economic

I have a question about this New Deal

thing…

Page 32: economic

Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United StatesReal quick,

FDR and Congress passedthe NIRA (National Industrial Recovery Act).

It gave the President the power to regulate interstate-commerce

during the Depression.

Page 33: economic

Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United StatesI thought that was

Congress’ job?

You rememberGibbons v. Ogden?

Well, no one has asked the question yet Until Schecter gets indicted for

Violating the NIRA

Page 34: economic

Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United StatesSo what happened?

The Supreme CourtRuled the NIRA

unconstitutional because only congress can regulate

trade between the states, and not thePresident.

The court will also strike downAAA (Agricutural Adjustment Act) as wellSo what does FDR do about it?

He tries to change the rules,“sort of”.

Page 35: economic

FDR tries to change the Supreme Court.

FDR wants his NIRA and AAA

The court struck them down…

FDR proposes a bill expanding the court from 9 to 15.

FDR would appoint judges who “agree” with his policies

1937 U.S. Supreme Court

Um…man?

People “freaked” about FDR’s plan to “not play by the rules” and trying to upset the idea of checks and balances…and the idea/bill dies in congress.

Page 36: economic
Page 37: economic

FDR continued to “try” new things to get the country out of the depression.

He expanded not only the role of the President but the Federal

Government’s in the lives of its citizens in everyday life. While things were economically tough here in the U.S. they were down right awful in Europe and Asia

Hi, how are ya.

Hey!! Don’t forget about me over here!!
