Inspiring graduates

Our Economics graduates are eagerly sought by leading employers and go on to have very successful careers in a wide range of industries and job roles.

No matter what career paths our graduates take, they always remain grateful for their Loughborough experiences and the skills gained from our courses. Here is what a few of our graduates have to say about their time here.

“The quality of everything at Loughborough is of a very high standard. I really enjoyed being part of the campus community at Loughborough. The facilities are second to none and my lecturers were great – I still keep in touch with the School now and get involved where I can with student presentations and careers advice so that I can share my experience with current students.”

StewartBSc Economics with Accounting Graduate Director with the Financial Services Audit Practice, Deloitte

“Loughborough always had an excellent reputation but there has always been a strive for continual improvement. The University seeks to provide an environment for high performance which encompasses world class facilities, first class teaching and research excellence which gives its students the best possible chance of success.”

Andrew Fisher OBEChairman at Rightmove, previously Executive Chairman at ShazamBSc Economics graduate, Loughborough University

Currently Chairman at Rightmove, Andrew played a highly influential role at Shazam, first as its CEO then as Executive Chairman. During that time, he helped transform the company from a small music start up with global ambitions to a $1 billion advertising giant. Here he shares with us the highs of his career, how his experiences at Loughborough helped him get there, and how it feels to have his achievements recognised with an OBE.

Why did you choose to study economics?Economics touches on so many aspects of business and the world in which we live. I use what I learnt at Loughborough every day. At Shazam for example, I worked for a global business which is significantly influenced by economic development and international trade.

We live in a data driven society where consumers expect personalised and contextually relevant products and services. Huge amounts of data have been collected for some time and the opportunity now is to turn this information into intelligence so that it becomes actionable and can be used to add value to people’s lives. Being able to interpret and utilise data will become a core skill for all business and economics graduates.

“Economics touches on so many aspects of business and the world in which we live. I use

what I learnt at Loughborough every day.”

Loughborough economics graduate Andrew Fisher has had a highly distinguished career and received an OBE for his services to the digital economy.

Why Loughborough?I knew I wanted to come to Loughborough before I even started my A levels, primarily because of the academic course and the University’s reputation for sport.

I quickly realised though that there are so many more opportunities, and became heavily involved in my Hall of Residence, as well as trying out new experiences such as hand-gliding and skiing – both of which I was the worst student by far at!

What life-lessons did you learn at Loughborough?I can’t help but smile when I think of all the experiences I enjoyed as Chairman of Royce Hall. I learnt how important a team is through our Hall committee and how it is more effective to lead from within a team. From counselling students who might have been having a harder time away from home, to my first experience of press relations – all of these experiences have helped me in my career.

I realised other people were better than me, whether that be academically or in my chosen sports, and learnt to not accept feeling dissatisfied. This led to me pursuing other things which gave me great pride and satisfaction.

Loughborough helped foster my entrepreneurial spirit and gave me the skills that I have used throughout my career. I realised that you can pursue anything you want to and the greatest challenge sometimes is just to recognise this in yourself.

Economics

Economics relates to every aspect of our lives, from the decisions we make as individuals to the structures created by governments and companies. Economics will give you new perspectives on some of the most pressing and challenging problems and choices facing the world today.

As an economist you will develop the skills to understand how consumers and firms interact and behave, how government policy affects the economy and how financial systems operate. By providing an in-depth analysis of firms’ decision making in a variety of settings, economics can help business managers make better pricing, production and investment decisions. This flexible course allows you to specialise in the final year by choosing optional modules that are most suited to your career aspirations.

Course structureIn the first two years you will develop a thorough understanding of the latest developments in economic analysis and policy application. Your personal skills will be developed through a range of modules building your ability to present, analyse data and work in groups. Modern economics relies heavily on model-building and statistical skills, and these skills form a core part of the course in the second year.

It is in the final year that students enjoy the maximum choice and flexibility. The final year consists of modules in advanced macroeconomics, microeconomics and applied econometrics. Alongside these, you choose options from within general areas of study such as international trade, money and finance, industrial economics and a wide range of specialised areas of applied economics such as the economics of developing countries and environmental economics.

Extended four-year degreeYou can choose to extend your degree and boost your employability by opting to study abroad or by taking a salaried professional placement between the second and final year of your degree.

Career opportunitiesGraduates enter such diverse fields as banking, accountancy, economic consultancy, financial analysis, financial management, personal wealth management, marketing, and general management.

“The thing that I will treasure most about my time at Loughborough is the amount of time my lecturers were willing to spend outside lectures to support and encourage me to explore independent trains of thought. My placement working in tax consultancy in Zurich, Switzerland gave me the chance to dip my feet into something which I do not want to pursue on graduating but which interested me.Your degree is what you make it; be interested, ask questions, read widely and get involved in as much as possible!”

Chris BSc Economics

“The highlight of my time at Loughborough has to be my placement at Mercedes Formula One.

I had the time of my life at their Operations Centre in Brackley as a finance placement student. I took part in race wins, world championship celebrations, worked with senior engineers for my projects and even got involved as a race engineer during live grand prix weekends. I gained career direction, an improved work ethic and a greater understanding of my studies. It’s helped me secure a graduate role with the Ministry of Defense as well as perform better in my final year.”

RhysBSc Business Economics and Finance finalist

“We are very lucky at Loughborough to have lecturers who have real world experience and can relate economic theory to their past experiences to help you better understand it.

I am hoping to go into a career in the financial sector as an analyst. My finance modules have given me good grounding in the theoretical knowledge that will be required and my data-based modules have given me the skill set to solve problems that I will inevitably face.

The econometrics modules, which underpin the quantitative aspects of the course, are hugely applicable to industry and have taught me to use two pieces of software that employers look for. I am now actively looking for a graduate role and a lot of the jobs I am considering specifically require the ability to use this software.”
