Diego VelazquezEconomics of GlobalizationPosition PaperAn open letter from the UN on ISISThere is no grey area about this, ISIS must be stopped. They have demonstrated a great threat to peace and national security. As a representative of the United Nations, it falls upon me to openly address this issue. There is no question that ISIS must be stopped. The continual attacks on civilians and innocent people is nothing short of inhuman, and they stand to be charged with crimes against humanity. We have already passed an anti-terror resolution, and we hope to see as many nations as possible support it. We want to see this taken up as a global issue and we all must work together to truly end this and bring this conflict to a resolution. The one major point that must be made that I fear may occur is that this is an issue that as a world we should work to support Iraqi forces and help them take back their nation, not simply go in and take control and do everything for them. The Iraqi people have been through terrible turmoil for the past 20 or so years and could help them but in going one step forward they would go 4 steps back. They need to stand as their own nation and not have anyone else essentially take control as ISIS is attempting to. The United States has taken it upon themselves time and time again to be the law enforcement of the world, and it should not be their job to do so, nor should they feel an obligation to do so or use these actions as a method of spreading their already gigantic grasp on the world. The US is just shy of being an empire and relies heavy on modern day imperialism for its influence and control over foreign nations. This does not mean the US should not be involved in this however. They are the greatest military force in the world and the assistance they can provide would be invaluable to Iraq. The key is for them to assist according to the terms of the UN and the Iraqi forces, rather than their own will. The US has a history of overstepping their bounds and forcing themselves into a position that they have not been asked to take. We want desperately to avoid the US holding the same position it has in Iraq for the last 20 years. They are a strong and sovereign nation and should be treated as such. Nations such as France have pledged support and this is exactly what we need. Currently we are still working on convincing other major nations to join us in the hopes that by doing so we will have the strength to stop ISIS as quickly as possible and show other terrorist groups the strength of a united world.ISIS has been deemed too brutal of even Al-Qaeda, let that be a sign of how much of a threat they pose. They were once a part of Al-Qaeda, but they split from them roughly around 2006 due to disobeying orders and continuing to kill civilians and act as their own entity. They aim to set a caliphate in Iraq and they are using radically violent methods and are killing anyone who does not agree with them. They are also attracting westerners to join their cause and it is something that we should be worried about. They are attracting Muslims who feel some disconnect to who they are and feel some need to contribute, even if its such a radical group. They are attracting non-Muslims by giving them something special to be a part of and do something. This is dangerous, with the media already glorifying mass murders, this only continues to prove how giving these evil people a podium hurts our societies. ISIS is a radical Muslim group, with heavy emphasis on radical. They are not representative of most Muslim people, and do nothing but hurt innocent people, hurt the integrity of nations they are attempting to take, and hurt the image of true Muslims who are nothing like the evil of ISIS.There are no two ways around it. ISIS is evil and must be stopped. Our nations must band together to end the evil they are causing, and we must do it as one. We cannot however let this be an opportunity for another nation to place itself in Iraq and essentially control and heavily influence their government. They have been through far too much and are finally getting back up and demonstrating their strength. They are nothing short of unfortunate in having this terrible threat to them and the world living within their borders and working to destroy what they are. ISIS is a radical group and their motives are clear, and their methods are barbaric and gruesome. They want to take Iraq and take the Muslim states and bring them into a dark age of Islam, severely damaging the image of their people and causing nothing short of an international tragedy.
