Ecosystems
What is Ecology?
• Ecology is the study of the interrelationships between living organisms and their physical and biological environment.
What is an ecosystem?
• Ecosystem is a community of interdependent organisms together with the environment.
However……..
• An ecosystem can be as large as the Ocean, or as small as a puddle!!!
• Ecosystems are more than just the organisms they contain. Geography, weather, climate and geologic factors also influence the interactions within an ecosystem.
Abiotic Factors• Are nonliving physical
factors of an environment.
• Abiotoic Factors include amount of water and oxygen, temperature, amount of sunlight and water pressure.
Biotic Factors
• Are the living, physical factors of an environment.
• Examples of Biotic Factors are parasitism,
disease and predation.
Different Types Of Ecosystem
• Desert Ecosystem• Grass Land Ecosystem• Forest Ecosystem• Aquatic Ecosystem
Desert Ecosyste
m
Desert – an ecosystem found where there is very little rainfall Deserts are dry and hot. There are very
few clouds. Two kinds of deserts:
Hot deserts Cold deserts
Hot deserts Temperatures are very warm all year round The summers are very hot
Cold deserts Short, warm summers Long, cold winters Found in places near the north and south poles
Desert Plants Deserts plants are having most
typical adaptations for conservation of water.
Many times their stem gets flattened and develops chlorophyll so that they can take up the function of photosynthesis.
Some plants have a waxy , thick cuticle over a leaf to reduce the loss of water due to transpiration.
Desert Animals Deserts animals are having most typical
adaptations for conservation of water. Desert animals like insects reptiles have
thick covering to minimize loss of water. They usually live inside burrows.
