Biggest EU R&I programme ever • €77 billion of EU funding over 2014-2020 • ~ 27% increase compared to 2007-2013
Core part of Europe 2020's strategy • Smart, sustainable and inclusive growth
Main objectives • Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth • Addressing people’s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and
environment • Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and
technology
In addition to collaborative projects for R&D
• Piloting, testing, demonstrations
• Access to finance
(loans, guarantees, equity investments)
• Specific measures for SMEs
• Support to PPPs
• Pre-commercial procurement
• Support to infrastructures for R&I

Objective: further development into a clinical setting of novel MNBS platforms,
techniques & systems already been proven in a laboratory setting
The work includes: Translation from pre-clinical phase to early clinical testing,
• Prototyping • Design and pilot manufacturing in appropriate volume
for clinical testing (small series), • Pre-clinical and early clinical testing.
Focus applications:
In vitro/in vivo diagnostics that are deployed at the point of care;
Therapy monitoring at the point of care.
NMBP-13-2017
Cross-cutting KETs for diagnostics at the point-of-care
Include a business case and exploitation strategy A significant participation of SMEs with R&D capacities is encouraged.
Facilitate clinical data harvesting
Demonstrate clear compliance with applicable Good Laboratory /Clinical / Manufacturing Practices
Attention to the requirements for Health Technology Assessment (HTA); Standardisation issues; Gender specific issues
Evaluation Outcome
13
62 proposals - 275 M€ total EU contribution requested
Development, clinical validation and preparation for commercialisation of a PoC tool for bone disease (a.o. osteoporisis) prevention, detection and treatment.
Development of a novel platform to detect food allergies and translation from the laboratory to real field.
Translation of a laboratory proven concept of a saliva biosensor to the clinical practice for addressing the priority needs in personalized HF diagnostics and therapy monitoring at the PoC
-POC description related to the size and transportability not clearly described; - Diseases e.g. Heart failure, food allergy, osteoporosis, risk of thrombosis and bleeding, bacterial Infection, CVD, corneal ectasia, tuberculosis; - All cancer proposals failed: discrepancy between the scientific SOTA knowledge regarding valid biomarkers and their use; - Mainly technology-driven consortia, Lack of convincing clinical validation, overall; - Lack clinical knowledge and expertise; clear power analysis necessary for clinical validations and for future clinical trials.

Smart Wearables
Reflection and Orientation Paper
Takes stock of the latest techno-market and policy developments,
Documents the research and development activities supported by
the EU,
Integrates the positions of stakeholders with a focus on barriers
that prevent the transition of wearables from lab to the market and
Proposes ways forward to help bring smart wearables into our daily
lives faster, unlocking their socio-economic potential.
