Clinical Experiences for Counselor Education Students
� COAD 6409: Counseling Skills and Techniques (begin learning clinical skills which will be applied in practicum and internships)
� COAD 6405: Group Procedures (learn and apply group counseling skills through experiential practice)
� Service-Learning Project in COAD 6406 & Clinical Capstone Project in COAD 6415
� Practicum: COAD 6482 � Internship I: COAD 6991 � Internship II: COAD 6992
COAD 6406: Service-Learning Project
� Students work in pairs, find counselor with whom to partner
� Meet with school counselor to identify area of need � Plan an initiative to address need � Assess impact of initiative � Prepare MEASURE and Report Card to show
process and outcomes � Leave MEASURE, Report Card and artifact with
school counselor
COAD 6415: Community Counselor Assessment Clinical Capstone Project
� Students create, promote, and deliver a presentation to target population addressing an assessed need.
� Presentation addresses: � Description of need and assessment process � Potential programmatic solutions � Budgetary suggestions � Potential impediments � Promotional materials and evaluations
Practicum: COAD 6482
� 100 contact hours (60% direct service) � Focuses primarily on skill development � Courses completed prior to practicum:
COAD 6400: Intro, COAD 6404: Theory, COAD 6409: Skills & Techniques

How experience is typically set-up
What students are expected to do (other reqs listed in manual)
� Student finds site/counselor (supervisor) to work with
� Submits supervisor’s credential info and site info
� Department approves site and supervisor
� Letter sent to site supervisor and her/his administrator
� Ongoing counseling with at least 5 students
� Consultations as appropriate for site
� Public relations activity for site
� Make and present at least two videos of individual counseling sessions
Internships I & II: COAD 6991 & 6992
� 300 contact hours each (60% direct service) � Focuses on overall professional development
and engagement as appropriate for site � Students at this level are expected to fully
engage with all aspects of professional role of school counselors at site

� Student finds site/counselor (supervisor) to work with
� Submits supervisor’s credential info and site info
� Department approves site and supervisor
� Letter sent to site supervisor and her/his administrator
� Ongoing counseling with at least 5 students
� Small group counseling � One professional dev.
activity � Assist with or develop
project based on assessed need
� Make and present at least two videos of individual counseling sessions
Basic elements… � Database of approved site supervisors
(supervisors not included on the list may also be submitted for review and approval)
� Online site supervisor training � All students must have liability insurance � 100 hour practicum, two 300 hour internships � At least 60% of hours must be spent in direct
service � Students meet weekly with site supervisors

Our process right now…
� Student identifies site and counselor � Meet with counselor and secure agreement � Student submits application � Supervisor completes online training � Student, counselor and counselor’s
administrator are notified of placement � Supervisor completes evaluation of student at
the end of experience � ECU Faculty assigns grade for course
