Your ItInerarY

Your Journey Includes

DAY 1 ~ NEW YORK/GUAYAQUIL ORO VERDE. (Meals aloft)Board your fl ight to Guayaquil. Upon arrival you will be met and escorted to your hotel, located in the heart of the commercial and banking center of the city.

DAY 2 ~ GUAYAQUIL/BALTRA/SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)Fly to the Galapagos Islands where you will board your motor yacht. You’ll be greeted by the crew for an introductory briefing of the trip and set sail for Santa Cruz Island, to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station where scientists from all over the globe conduct biological research. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with the Captain.

DAY 3 ~ FLOREANA ISLAND/DEVIL’S CROWN/POST OFFICE & PUNTA CORMORANT M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)Your morning begins with a visit to Post Office Bay, established in the 18th century as a post office by mariners. Following lunch and a siesta, there is a possibility to snorkel from the pangas around Champion Islet, located just offshore Floreana Island. From there disembark at Punta Cormorant and marvel at the two highly contrasting beaches, one composed of olivine crystals, giving it a greenish tinge, and the other a carbonate beach of very fine white sand formed from coral skeletons. Located between the beaches is a salt lagoon, frequented by flamingos, pintails, stilts and other wading birds.

DAY 4 ~ ESPANOLA ISLAND/GARDNER BAY/PUNTA SUAREZ M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)See the only nesting site of the Waved Albatross in the Galapagos as you head towards Gardner Bay. Frequented by sea lions, it is also a major nesting site for marine turtles. Spend the day on the most southern island on the archipelago. At Punta Suarez search for various nesting seabird species, Galapagos Doves, Galapagos Hawks and several types of reptiles. Marvel at the blowhole where water is sprayed over 30 yards into the air.

DAY 5 ~ DAPHNE ISLAND/SANTA CRUZ ISLAND/BALLENA BAY OR EDEN ISLET M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)This morning you cruise around Daphne Island, an eroded tuff cone formation that was created by successive volcanic activity, for another opportunity to see the Galapagos’ gorgeous bird life. A wet landing at Balena Bay takes you to a beautiful olivine beach (a volcanic crystal that forms in fast-cooling lava) to see Blue-footed Boobies, land birds, Nazca Boobies and enjoy the views.

DAY 6 ~ ISABELA ISLAND/VICENTE ROCA POINT/FERNANDINA ISLAND/ESPINOZA POINT M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)The coastal exploration is by panga. This area has a very rich marine life, and is seasonally visited by green sea turtles. Depending on the conditions of the ocean, we will schedule a snorkeling outing along the cliffs of partly-sunken Ecuador Volcano, in the northern tip of Isabela Island. In the afternoon, you disembark at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory.

DAY 7 ~ ISABELA ISLAND/URBINA BAY/TAGUS COVE M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)This morning disembark (wet landing) at Urbina Bay. Here you can find corals, shells and many other calcareous organisms exposed above water. This area is also home to large and very colorful Galápagos land iguanas, giant tortoises (occasionally), and is a good spot to observe Darwin’s Finches. Along the shoreline, you may encounter Flightless Cormorants and see penguins while snorkeling in this beautiful cove. After lunch disembark (dry landing) at Tagus Cove on Isabela Island. After hiking beyond Darwin Lake, a saltwater lagoon above sea level, you will be rewarded with extraordinary views of Darwin and Wolf volcanoes. Enjoy a panga ride through the mangrove area to see the rays, turtles, sea lions, and, circling overhead, Galapagos Hawks.

DAY 8 ~ SANTIAGO ISLAND/EGAS PORT/SULLIVAN BAY M/Y CORAL I/II. (B,L,D)Wet landing on a beach of black volcanic sand, and stroll along the shoreline at Puerto Egas, Santiago. Look for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the small pools as the tide goes out. Your walk comes to an end when you arrive at the fur seal grottos. Board your panga, bound for Sullivan Bay on the east coast of Santiago. Land on a white coral sand beach and walk over lava that flowed here less than 100 years ago.

DAYS 9/10 ~ SANTA CRUZ ISLAND/EL CHATO/BALTRA AIRPORT/ GUAYAQUIL/MIAMI/NEW YORK (B; Meals Aloft)Drop anchor at Puerto Ayora this morning and travel by bus to Cerro Chato Reserve, one of the best places inthe archipelago to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Later, fly back to Guayaquil where the remainderof your evening is at leisure and your dayroom at Oro Verde awaits. Transfer to your return flights in the evening.

An ecologist and life-long naturalist, Ernest Williams has conducted field studies in New York, Wyoming, and Mexico on the population biology and conservation of butterflies. His recent books include The Nature Hand-book: A Guide to Observ-

ing the Great Outdoors (2005, Oxford University Press), which is a field guide to patterns in nature, and Pathways to Excellence in Teaching (2012, Couper Press), an edited volume of essays. He is also co-author of The Stokes Butterfly Book (Little, Brown and Co.) Williams graduated from Trinity College in 1968, received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1976, and has taught for the past 32 years at Hamilton College, where he has been recognized for excellence in teaching. Exploring nature is his passion, and it has taken him to many places, including the Galapagos, Trinidad, Belize, and Yellowstone National Park.

Begin your journey with a tour to the vibrant and colorful capital city of Ecuador with its strong Spanish heritage reflected in the architecture, including churches, mansions and cloisters. Then head north, across the colorful valleys of Guayllabamba and Cayambe. The breathtaking setting offers great photo opportunities. Continue to South America’s most famous Indian fair – the Otavalo Market. Alive with the sounds of Andean pipe music, people bartering in Spanish, English and Quechua (a derivative of the Incan language) shop for colorful woolens, jewelry, wall hangings and instruments.

From Guayaquil, head to Lima, where you’re introduced to the heart of urban Peru. Fly to Cusco and drive to Yucay in the sacred valley of the Incas, a place of adventure, natural beauty, and rich history. Explore remarkable ruins, lively markets, and the beautiful rivers and forests before heading on by rail to Machu Picchu, through some of the most breathtaking landscapes imaginable. Explore Cusco itself, the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the Western hemisphere, before returning to Lima and your flight home.
