    REMINDERS

ALL students are to bring a dictionary to every classfor this course.

Active Learning method will be used through out the

semester. Tests and assignments will focus on understanding

and ability to describe, discuss, compare andevaluate. Questions testing memory is very limited.

    All formative assessments (Assignments, Tests

    1&2) will be returned back.

    Philosophy of Research

    Definition of research

    What is research?

    What is involved in a

    Research?

    What are the outputs of

    research?

    1.Investigate

    2.Outcome

    3. Current problems

A systematic investigation to find answer to the problem.

    (Burns, 1994)

A systematic and objective identification, collection,

analysis and dissemination of information for thepurpose of improving understanding and decisionmaking related to the identification and solution ofproblems and opportunities.

    (Malhotra, 1993)

Systematic or methodical way of producing newknowledge, processes, products or services.

    (MOSTE, 2001)

    DEFINITIONS OF RESEARCH

  • 8/7/2019 ECW503_Lecture_Week1

    9/16

Research can also be stated as a

    discipline process of investigating

and seeking facts that will ultimately

lead a researcher to discover the truth

    about something.

  • 8/7/2019 ECW503_Lecture_Week1

    10/16

    What is the truth?

The truth is usually stated as the

researchers thesis or report, and is aresult of the facts the researcher has

    discovered. Generally the truth must

be proved conclusively by the factsobtained.

  • 8/7/2019 ECW503_Lecture_Week1

    11/16

So.research is basically a careful or

diligent search. It can be aninvestigation or experimentation

    aimed at the discovery and

interpretation of facts, revision ofaccepted theories, principals or laws

in light of new facts. Or

investigations to establish newproducts or processes.

  • 8/7/2019 ECW503_Lecture_Week1

    12/16

    Research activities produces:

New knowledge -in terms of new theory

    New processes processes that will

    lead to higher efficiency

    New products light weight aggregate

    New services automatic securitychecks

    Exercise 1 LO

    Duration: 45 - 60 minutes

    Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session students

    a. will be aware of the need for problem formulationb. will understand that in order to solve a problem, one

would need to understand what caused it in the firstplace.

    c. will be exposed to contemporary and current issues

    d. will acquire life long learning through group discussionsand consultations with instructors

  • 8/7/2019 ECW503_Lecture_Week1

    14/16

    Exercise 1 - Tasks

Students are to do the following:

    1. List 5 major feat of civil engineering systems.

    2. Select one major feat from their list and discussedwhy they are successful.

    3. What are the lessons learned from theaccomplishment.

Note: Students are required to submit their work on26/1/2011 in power point form (15-20 slides-hardcopy) .

    You are to find out what the followingexpressions mean;

    A. Basic Research

    B. Applied Research

Students will be randomly selected to

explain the meaning of these expressionsduring the next class.
