ABSTRACTThe series of "Resource Inventories" is designed to
encourage wider use of available information and services in thefield of special education technology. A resource invertory isprovided for each of 46 states of the United States. Each inventoryincludes directory information on public and private agencies andorganizations that offer technology-related services. Resourceinformation is organized into seven service areas: state agencies, special education resources, rehabilitation/vocational resources,organizations/affiliates, community-based resources, medical/hospitalresources, and special projects/centers. A system of codes identifiesthe type of service provided (such as direct service, assessment, information, training, product evaluation, assistive devices, ortechnical assistance); the audience served (i.e., parents, educators,or rehabilitation personnel); and the areas of disability/handicapserved. Following the state inventories are three special listings ofrehabilitation engineering centers, national special educationalliances, and national information service providers. (JDD)

Resource Inventory Cover SheetAs a national resource with the goal of Increased use of information about technology, theCenter for Special Education Technology routinely monitors the growing number ofresources available to technology users. Our series of Resource inventories is designed toencourage wider use of available Information and services. Inventories are organized bystate and by topic. Each Inventory Includes information about public and private agenciesand organizations that offer technology-related services. Resource Information isorganized in the seven service areas listed below. A system of codes identifies the type ofservice provided, the audience served, and the areas of disability/handicap for eachresource. We hope that organizing the information in this way will lead to more efficient useof these valuable technology resources.
State AgenciesThere are two state level agencies that have specific responsibilities for the developmentand delivery of services to handicapped children and adults. These state agenciesImplement state and federal legislation and develop policies and programs. The state officeor divigion of special education has legal responsibility for the administration andsupervision of special education programs in the schools. The state vocationalrehabilitation agency provides a range of services needed to prepare people withdisabilities for work and oversees the federal-state rehabilitation services. In many statesthese agertclev, are active in promoting the use of technology and can assist in locatingresources and services within the state.
Special Education ResourcesThere are a growing number of resources that provide information and services about theuse of technology in special education. Some are state funded projects; others aresupported by universities, school districts, or other educational agencies. Many states havea network of intermediate units that provide support to school districts and their personnel. The available special education services may include databases and other Informationproducts, training, technical assistance, and in some cases, direct services to children.Resources providing assessment, loan, and training services related to the assistive usesof technology are on the Increase. Most of the resources listed in this category provideservices within the state.
Rehabilitation/Vocational ResourcesThere is an extensive nationwide network of federally funded rehabilitation engineeringcenters and research and development facilities. Many provide information of Interest tospecial educators; others design and develop special aids and equipment for disabledindividuals. State rehabilitation agencies often support special projects and service centersthat apply technology in the workplace and for Independent living. Vocational trainingfacilities, operated by public ard private agencies, may provide similar services.
Organizations/AffiliatesProfessional, advocacy, consumer, and voluntary organizations generally focus on aparticular disability or group of service providers. An increasing number of theseorganizations are Involved in technology-related activities. The information and servicesprovided by such groups will vary widely from print materials to direct services forindividuals. Many national organizations such as the Association for Retarded Citizens(ARC) and United Cerebral Palsy (UCPA) have a network of affiliates across the countrythat are active in the local community.

Community-based RinourcesLocal, community-based groups are often the most valuable and accessible source ofinformation and services. The widespread interest in technology has resulted in a numberof community-based resources that can be very helpful to educators, parents, andindividuals with disabilities. Computer user groups are ective in many communities. Locallibraries and schools are often involved in technology-related services. Large and smailbusinesses are another source of support in a community. The Apple Special EducationAlliance Is one example of business support to community-based groups interested intechnology use. Our inventories provide some information about community-basedresources. We expect there are many more worth investigating.
Medical/Hospital ResourcesThe application of technology in medical settings is widespread. There is an increasing useof technology-related devices and systems as rehabilitative aids in areas such ascommunication and mobility. Direct service agencies such as hospitals, medical facilities, and clinics often provide assessment, rehabilitative, and assistive device support forindividuals. These facilities may diagnose individual needs and design and adapt specialaids and equipment for use in educational and living environments. Some resources workin conjunction with educational facilities to provide the support needed for handicappedchildren.
Special Projects/CentersFederally-funded projects, information clearinghouses, and private sector projects areanother source of information and services. These resources can be categorized asproviding general information about special education and/or technology (i.e., ERICClearinghouses) or specia'ized information about special education technology (i.e., theCenter for Special Education Technu!ogy and the IBM National Support Center for Personswith Disabilities). A range of services may be available including information and referral, technical assistance, research and 'development, and training. Most of the projects have anational or regional service area arid are listed in our topical inventories. They have alsobeen included on the inventorica tor the state in which they reside.
