What is Terrorism???
• =is the systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion
Modern Terrorism• Since 1960s- 19,000
terrorist attacks have occurred worldwide
• Why? To bring attention to their goals and get media attention
• Motives? Radical religious, cultural
• Willing to use any method to kill their enemies
Terrorist Methods
• Involve violence
• Most common weapons: bombs and bullets
• Target: crowded places where people normally safe- subway stations, bus stops, restaurants, shopping malls
• Sometimes terrorists attack places that symbolize part of their goals (ie: Twin Towers)
Cyberterrorism
• = politically motivated attacks on information systems• Hacking, viruses
• Responding to Terrorism:• Many governments work
hard to target terrorists
Terrorism Around the World
• 1. Middle East• Many terrorists have roots to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict
• Many believe the only way is to settle the land issue, but violence still continues
2. Europe• Catholic Irish
Republican Army (IRA) vs. British (because Britain opposed control of Northern Ireland)
3. Asia• Afghanistan (southwest Asia) has
become a haven for international terrorists after the Taliban came to power in 1996
• Osama bin Laden= Saudi Arabian, Afghanistan, mountain hideouts, al-Qaeda
• Japan- religious cult, “Supreme Truth”

• Narcoterrorism= terrorism linked to drug trafficking
• FARC= Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia- left winged guerrilla group, links to narco
