Fourth Sunday of Easter - May 7, 2017

Dear Parish Family,

Today is known as good shepherd Sunday, Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. We hear in the Gospel of John where Jesus speaks of himself as the "good shepherd". "The good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep." All of this is intimately linked with the second theme of this Sun-day. Not only is it Good Shepherd Sunday, it is also "Vocations Sunday". On this day we are espe-cially asked first of all to pray that the Church may be provided with the leaders needed to do its

work of spreading the Gospel.

We know that at the present time there is a critical shortage of such leaders, at least in the traditional sense – priests and religious. But, while we may earnestly pray that our Church be supplied with the leaders it needs, there can be a tendency among us to pray that others may answer that call. We do not see ourselves as included. We may pray earnestly for more young people to offer themselves as priests and religious but clearly exclude our own children.

But the problem is a wider one. We have for too long given a much too narrow meaning to the word ‘vocation’. We tend to limit it to a calling to be a priest or a member of a religious institute. But, in fact, every single one of us has a vocation. For most of us, probably, it is what we are now doing be it as spouses, parents, teachers, doc-tors, civil servants, running a business, salespersons… or whatever.

Nevertheless, each one of us should be asking ourselves today: Is what I am spending my energies on every day my real vocation? Is this what God wants me to be doing with my life? How is what I am doing giving witness to my Christian faith? What contribution am I offering to make this world a better place for people to live in? To what extent am I a spreader of truth, of love, of justice, of freedom, of tolerance and acceptance…?

And, if I am in a position which would be difficult to change (as a spouse or parent or holding a particular job), how, within that situation, is God calling me to greater service of my Church and my community? Am I giving something through my life or am I just using society (and even the Church) to get what I want?

God is calling every single one of us to work for the Gospel. For a small number it may be as a priest or religious – and that call can come at any time in one’s life. But there are hundreds of other ways of serving the Church and helping to build up the Christian community.

Where is God calling me to make my own unique contribution based on the particular talents God has given me? If every single one of us were to answer that question sincerely and to act upon it, I am confident that our Church would have all the leadership it needs.

In that context I would like to announce that one of our seminarians, Jesus Alatorre is being ordained to the transitional deaconate on Friday May 26th, 7:00pm at St. Joseph Parish in Wenatchee. Let us given thanks to God for this milestone in the life of our church in Yakima. We are thinking about carpooling a bus. If you are inter-ested please call the office for more information.

Even though we have less experience with sheep and shepherds today in our society, we can still identify strongly with the image of Jesus as the Good

Shepherd and as the gate for the sheep. Psalm 23 remains a popular and favorite

psalm for prayer. In the image of the Good Shepherd, we know ourselves to be protected and cared for by a loving

God.

As your family gathers, ask what each person knows about sheep and shep-

herds. Recall that shepherds and sheep have a close relationship. Sheep will only follow their own shepherd; they

recognize his voice and will not follow a stranger. The shepherd’s job is to pro-tect his sheep. In some ways, the rela-tionship between the shepherd and his sheep is like that of a parent and child. Read together this Sunday’s Gospel,

John 10:1-10. Talk about how Jesus tells us that he is the gate for the sheep. The sheep enter the protection of the sheep-fold through the gate. In Jesus we find protection and abundant life. Conclude by thanking Jesus for being our Good

Shepherd and by praying today’s psalm, Psalm 23.

A few Sundays ago, I was sick, in bed, and unable to attend Mass. Thankfully, a priest came over after Mass to bring me Communion. Not only did this priest go out of his way to bring me the Eucharist, but he also took the time to hear my con-fession and bless me. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a shortened Communion Service but it’s basically a mini version of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Since the Eu-charist is already consecrated, it’s pretty quick. It still includes the key prayers and the Agnus Dei.

After Father said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,” I answered, like usual, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” Of-tentimes, after this, a priest will say, “Taste and see how good the Lord is,” or something to that effect before con-suming the Eucharist. I’ve heard differ-ent exhortations and enjoy hearing whatever the Lord places on His priest’s heart. This particular night, Father said, “The Lord is my shepherd” and awaited my response. The words escaped my mouth simply and confidently, “there is nothing I shall want.”

It was one of those significant moments where you say something you’ve said or heard a million times, but it strikes your heart in a new way. As I said, “there is nothing I shall want,” I found a new con-fidence that the Lord wouldn’t leave any of my desires unfulfilled. So often, when I feel the Lord calling me to something, my mind immediately jumps to what I’ll

be giving up and what I’ll have to leave behind. Recently, the Lord has been call-ing me to remember His words in the Gospel, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it” (Luke 9:24). When I think about all that I’ll have to give up or “lose,” I’m trying to save my life, but if I abandon everything for Je-sus’ sake, I’ll discover what a rich life I am being offered. This year, I want to wake up every morning and repeat those precious words, “The Lord is my shep-herd, there is nothing I shall want.”

RCIA: Penitential Rite for Candidates

Are you, or is there someone you know who is, interested in looking into the Catholic faith and participating in the process of the RCIA? The process involves 4 ‘steps’ and begins during the

summer with what is called the Precatechumenate or Inquiry phase. This time provides the opportunity for you to ask questions about Catholicism and learn some of the basics of the faith. RCIA

provides an opportunity to learn more about what Catholics believe and a pathway to the Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.) We will have an information meeting, Tuesday, May 23rd @ 7:00pm in Room 12 of the Par ish Activity Center . Please “Come and See” the richness that the Catholic Church has to

Baptism Preparation

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that he is our Good Shepherd. Long ago in Jesus’ time, a good shepherd would lay down his life for his sheep. The sheep would recognize the shepherd’s voice and follow him. In those days, the shepherd would walk in front of the sheep and lead them. Jesus knows us by name. We are the sheep of his flock. Jesus asks his followers to listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him.

In today’s Gospel we see that Jesus is a leader who is willing to lay down his life for his flock. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects and cares for his followers with un-ending love. Family Questions:
