FROM THE

EDITOR

Beane pioneered the art of

doing ‘a Moneyball’, flying in the

face of conventional wisdom

to spearhead a data-driven,

evidence-based approach.

In doing so much with so

relatively little he achieved something

comparable to Leicester’s ascent of

the Premier League table, yet he says

to make such a comparison would be

‘embarrassing’. Read the incredible

full interview on page 40.

One could argue that Leicester

City must have done little wrong

during the past unforgettable season.

But even Ranieri, fresh from being

crowned LMA Manager of the Year,

will be looking back as well as thinking

forward. Why fix what isn’t broken?

Because being broken isn’t your only

problem. Something can be working

just fine and still be barely fit for

purpose next year.

Achieving sustainable year-

on-year performance requires all

managers to constantly assess the

changing environment in which they

find themselves, the new teams at

their disposal and their own abilities

and approaches. In our feature on

page 26, experts including assistant

manager of Aston Villa Steve Clarke

and Motherwell’s Mark McGhee share

their experiences of how to do this.

As Clarke says, “If you stand still or

think you’ve done as well as you’re

ever going to, you’ll go backwards

while others get ahead.”

One man who knows a thing or two

about building on success is Eddie

Howe, who in his seven years as a

manager has taken Bournemouth from

League Two to the Barclays Premier

League and kept the club there.

Speaking in our cover feature on

page 12, he says of the close season,

“Every summer I ask the players to go

away and come back better, and I know

that to demand that means I need to

do the same.”

“Achieving sustainable year-on-year performance requires all managers to constantly assess the changing environment in which they find themselves”

FROM THE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

It has been a remarkable season

and I would like to congratulate

not only those who fought it

out successfully at the tops

and bottoms of their respective

leagues, but every manager

who has achieved their ambitions,

whatever their measure of success,

be it promotion, securing their league

status or exceeding expectations.

The 24th LMA Annual Awards Dinner

sponsored by Barclays provided the

perfect opportunity to commend

those managers of each league whose

accomplishments this season have made

them really stand out to their peers.

A 1,000-strong audience of managers,

commercial partners and guests came

together at Old Billingsgate, London, to

applaud Chris Wilder, Gary Caldwell and

Chris Hughton as they were presented

with Manager of the Year awards for

their respective Skybet leagues. Michael

O’Neill and Brian Lee MBE were also

formally recognised by the LMA, the

former with a Special Achievement

award and the latter with the LMA

Service to Football award.

Of course, the night would not have

been complete without taking the time

to express our utmost congratulations

to Barclays Premier League and LMA

Manager of the Year Claudio Ranieri, who

joined us straight from the club’s trophy

parade in Leicester.

Leicester City’s staggering

achievement epitomised what can

be achieved when a team of talented

individuals work together towards a

common goal and, by leading his side to

the Barclays Premier League, Claudio

has become an inspiration for managers

and coaches throughout the world. We

wish him and Leicester City the very

best of luck as they embark on a new

challenge next season, defending their

title and competing against Europe’s

elite in the UEFA Champions League.

FALLING SHORT

The results of the recent Global Assessment Barometer 2016 from

Cut-e provides a snapshot of global trends in the use of psychometric

assessments. Key findings:

• Organisations want to make better, less risky hiring decisions,

but also increasingly want to predict which candidates will be

the strongest performers

• Use of psychometric assessment is increasing, particularly for

recruiting managers, white-collar workers, graduates and apprentices

• Competency-based interviews are in decline

• Pre-application testing is increasing in popularity

• Nearly half of organisations use talent analytics

• There’s growing emphasis on assessing candidates for:

London’s Old Billingsgate, on the banks of the Thames, once

again provided the stunning setting for the LMA Annual

Awards Dinner, sponsored by Barclays. An audience of

over 1,000 LMA members, partners, friends and football

stakeholders came together to celebrate the efforts of

the 2015/16 season and to recognise those managers

considered by their peers to have achieved the most given

the resources available.

LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson said, “We gathered this

evening to celebrate the accomplishments of our managers

and coaches who have overseen one of the most competitive

and entertaining seasons in recent years. Throughout the top

four leagues we have witnessed success against all odds and

levels of excitement that have become synonymous with the

English game.”

He congratulated the winner of the LMA Manager of the

Year sponsored by Barclays, Claudio Ranieri, saying, “In his first

year as manager of Leicester City he has achieved the most

astonishing of sporting triumphs and thoroughly deserves all

the recognition and praise being bestowed upon him tonight.”

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan added, “Leicester's

achievement has been made possible by the tactical and

technical knowledge of Claudio and his coaching staff. His

passion for football, humility and charisma has underpinned an

incredible ability to manage a team at the very highest level.

He is a worthy champion and a true gentleman of the sport.

“On behalf of the LMA, many congratulations to the

managers who have been recognised by their peers and

received LMA Awards this evening.”
