A New Beginning!

As many of us are preparing our children to return to school there are some of us are dealing

with uncertainty about how this school year is going to work out. The changes that we are

having to adapt to, such as the social distancing in the school system, remote learning, taking

turns attending school, we continue with these challenges during this health pandemic. Here

at CASA we are also adapting to our new changes in roles. As of August 1st, I accepted the

position of Executive Director, with much excitement and enthusiasm. I am extremely

blessed that the board members have entrusted me with this great responsibility of advocat-

ing for the children in the foster care system and supporting the foster families that open

their hearts and homes to the children. One of my goals is to work side by side with CYFD

and Cavern City Child Advocacy to collaborate our resources to better serve the children and

their families as well as bringing awareness of the abuse and neglect that happens in our

communities. This past year has been a learning experience and I have grown in many ways

in mindfulness and strength, confidence and a passion to share my skills with other advo-

cates who share the same concern for our children. My door is always open to visit with you,

to listen to your concerns and ideas to better serve our community. Please do not hesitate to

call me at any time or visit and thank you for this chance to serve Carlsbad and Artesia.

I would also like to welcome Amy to her new position as Assistant Director and Volunteer

Coordinator effective August 3rd, 2020. She has been with CASA for a year and 4 months,

and is very devoted to working her cases and with her advocates.

Esmeralda Perez with replace her, she joins us fresh out of NMSU with a Bachelors in Ap-

plied Studies/Major concentration: Early Childhood and Minor in Family and Child Scienc-

es. Artesia has also received a new addition, Meredith Mayberry, she brings several years of

experience working with at risk youth and non profits focused on serving youth. I welcome

these two young ladies to our team, and excited for CASA in flourishing in our advocacy ar-

ea and working in the communities of Carlsbad and Artesia.

Missy Chavez Executive Director

DIY Painted Rock Tic Tac Toe Set Supplies Needed: 10 Smooth rocks (about the size of a golf ball) – Let the outside adventure begins 2- 1″ foam paint brushes 1 Small flat paint brush Outdoor chalk

Directions Step 1 – it is time to go on an outdoor adventure with your kids. Take them on your favorite hiking path or just for a nice walk. Grab a reusable bag or backpack to store your rocks. You are looking for about 10 smooth river rock. Bonus if you can find them all around the same size. Step 2 – Wash and dry your rocks if they are dirty. I would honestly wash them anyways, even if you didn’t find them to be dirty. The paint will stick better to a clean surface and not peel. Step 3 – Using a foam brush, paint five of your rocks pink and let dry thoroughly. If you are outside on a hot day it will dry extremely fast. Don’t throw out that foam brush. Place in a place grocery bag and wrap up. We will be using it again to apply a second coat. Step 4 – Time to paint your other rocks. Using another foam brush, paint the other five rocks teal and let dry. You can’t do the next step without your painted rocks being completely dry. If outside and in the sun again this step will go by fast. Step 5 – Get out your previously saved foam brush and get ready to paint the second coat on your pink rocks. If after painting your pink rocks, move ahead and paint your teal rocks as well. Step 6 – Now using your small flat brush and paint all your teal rocks with an “X” and all of your pink rocks with an “O” and let dry. Step 7 – Once your rocks are dry, use your chalk to draw a tic tac toe board on the ground. Now instead of drawing X’s and O’s (the classic way), use your rocks! You can simply keep them one simple color or draw smiling faces on one set or silly faces on the other.

There you have it your DIY Painted Rock Tic Tac Toe Set is all ready to go. Let the games begin.

If you have a fun little bag or even a shoebox you can store them in a safe place for your next game. Hey! The kids can even decorate that show box too.

Bring Tic Tac Toe with you

Place your painted rock Tic Tac Toe set in a to-go bag and you are ready to set up in a pitch. Perfect for taking with you on your camping trip or just a date to the park with good friends.

Hello Amazing Advocates!

I hope you all are having an amazing summer, despite the COVID restrictions. We are

still doing all of our CASA duties virtually. Face to face visiting is not recommended at

this time. If you haven’t started yet, please check out CASA Connect! The sooner you

start using it, the sooner you will see how it helps us all to stay organized and

how all your case information comes full circle. It is such a helpful tool.

As always, continue to call the office with questions/concerns

about your cases or about CASA Connect.

We have 7 new CASAs in Training, but we still are in dire need of new volunteers. We

ended July with our 30th new case of 2020. We had a total of 29 new cases in all of

2019. As you can see, the cases don’t stop coming in. We are currently serving 105

children in 65 cases in Eddy County. We only have 20 active volunteers.

Staff is carrying 35 of those cases, a total of 61 children.

If you know of anyone who may be interested, please send them our way!

We also still have yard signs and pamphlets for local businesses

to help us spread the word!

You are appreciated! Thank you all, for all you do!

According to NMCAN standards, a CASA report MUST be submitted for every case at every hearing with the exception of 10 day custody, use of immunity, and TPR.

Some things to remember when writing your report: 1. Have you had contact with the social worker? 2. If your CASA child attends school or daycare have you spoken to your child’s teacher? 3. Are your parents attending counseling, parenting classes, and supervised visitations? 4. Are the parents being drug tested and if so have the UA’s been clean? 5. Are the parents working and do they have a clean, safe home? 6. If they have been ordered to in-patient or out-patient drug rehab are they attending and participating?

Please also remember that if you have information on any of the above items they need to be factual.

Court reports are due 8 days or more before the hearing date to your CASA coordinator for review and processing. According to the Children’s Code, all FINALIZED court reports are

due to all parties involved in the case 5 days before the hearing date.

We are here to help! Please call us with any questions or concerns. Carlsbad Office: 575-887-5966 Artesia Office: 575-746-6077
