    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:Lesson five of unit on people, cultures, and civilizations. Students will learn more in depth

about the Mountain Region and one of the tribes who lived there, The Apaches (which

    was discussed in prior lesson).

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group, individual, small groups

    C. Materials: Book Journal Venn Diagram Researchers Chart Map

    D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standards

H1.5.1 Identify and describe Native North American life and culturalregions prior to European contact.

o Student-Friendly Standards I will recognize and describe Native North American life and culture

before it was mixed in with European contact.

    E. Procedure:1. Journal: Each group of students will be given a photo. Each student must write a

minimum of 5 sentences about how they think the Apaches lived. At least one student

    from each group must share.

    2. Map: Show students on a map what region the Apaches lived in. Discuss the Mountainregion and how it differs from Nevada. Students will complete Venn diagrams as a

    group.

    3. We will popcorn read Chapters 1, 5, and 6 of The Apache.4. Students will break off into 5 groups; each group will complete a Jigsaw by finding

additional information on assigned topic and fill it on the given chart.

    5. Each group will present their Jigsaw, the other groups have to continue to completetheir chart with the information they are being taught by their classmates.

    6. CLOSURE: As a class, we will discuss the similarities between us and the Apaches, students must complete a Venn diagram. Students will turn both Venn diagrams in and

    their complete Jigsaw.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Evaluation will be based on the Jigsaw Researchers Chart completion, both Venn

Diagrams, and verbal summarization of the differences between then and now.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.I will determine the comprehension by their completed Venn Diagrams and class

    discussion.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part will be when we are reading. In this particular section, I will be

able to stop the students and have them reiterate what they have read; I will also

be able to ask questions which will give me an idea of how much they

    comprehend.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I think the most challenging part would be when students are presenting their

Jigsaw Researcher charts. This is because the other students will be taking notes

from their peers. Most likely I will have to intervene to explain something further or

    give examples.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? This lesson could be extended by covering the other regions, then grouping the kids

into six groups and having them create entire scenery about their tribe and region.

    4.

What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I will have a PowerPoint ready to show them, I would also give them a basic facts

sheet on the Apaches. For these particular students who do not understand, I might

even have them write 2 to 3 paragraphs about the Apaches (this is after I give

them the extra help to ensure they understand).

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?Due to time constraints, I would probably change the Popcorn Reading idea. I

might just have to read the selected chapters to the class.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The assessment always seems to be the most difficult part for me because I always

question if my assessment is good enough to measure the students comprehension

    levels.
