2013 Board of Directors: Michelle Martin, President Bhanu Kohli, VP Tim Scott, Treasurer Steve Cogan, Secretary (Jan-Sept) Maria Glidden (Jan-May) Karen English (Jan-April) Beth Barnes Vanna Boghossian Trivéa Isaacs Lisa Last Bob Sjolin Benjamin Ferrie (May-Dec) Naz Zarifian (May-Dec) Gaynor Feltmate (Nov-Dec)

Food banks are changing – they must – to better respond to the needs of hungry families in Canada. The traditional food bank model of primarily collecting food and distributing it is no longer enough to help someone move beyond poverty. Eden Community Food Bank has never been a “traditional” food bank. Our advocacy services have long provided support in areas other than food that encourage families to take steps out of poverty.

In the last decade, there has been a growing evolution to transition from the traditional concept to a more long-term, sustainable approach that further engages food bank clients and the greater community; a model that includes awareness, education, skills development and practical experience. The “community food centre” model brings integrated programming in the areas of healthy food access, food skills development and education and engagement to address intractable problems of hunger, poverty and poor health.

In the last year, our Board of Directors began a process of transitioning to a community food centre model by adopting new vision and mission statements, and re-organizing our program structure into three main program areas: Food Skills, Food Access and Community Engagement and encouraging program development that supports the new model.

Over the next year, we will be sharing this new model with our many community stakeholders (clients, volunteers, donors, community organizations and major fun-ders) to encourage buy-in and receive feedback as we more fully develop the model for a full roll-out next year because we’re in it together.

Locations ECFB provides food advocacy and practical skills training to hungry individuals and families in western Mississauga. We have been serving the Meadowvale and Streetsville neighbourhoods for 25 years. Our original location, the Battleford Client Centre, is located in the basement of Eden United Church on the corner of Winston Churchill Blvd and Battleford Rd. Our second and now primary location for the last five years, the Unity Client Centre, warehouse, Community Learning Kitchen and office, is at 3185 Unity Drive off of Winston Churchill Blvd just south of Highway 403.

Clients In 2013, ECFB served 350—400 families per month. 40% of whom were children, 2% were infants. Each person re-ceived an average of 28 lbs per visit. On average, our clients spend 75% of their income on rent & utilities. Too many of our clients have to chose between a roof over their heads or food for their family because they can’t afford both.

For every $2 donated to the food bank in 2013, we distributed the food needed to make

four healthy and nutritious meals.

Our fiscal year follows the calendar year—January 1st to December 31st. Our revenue was $624,257 in 2013. Our expenses were $537,732. The surplus of $86,525 will be used to cover the continued development of our Food Skills programs and expansion of our Community Engagement into 2014.

Donations from a variety of sources and a number of fundraising events made it possible to fully fund our programs in 2013!
