    Besides Old Rocks and Sand

In 2003 I was on my way to the grocery store one day and got diverted for a few moments bya poster in the travel agency window. The next thing I knew I had booked a trip to Egypt. Idalways loved history and the romantic idea of old ruins. What better place to go than Egypt? So, I packed my bags and joined a tour.

I saw rocks and ruins and broken statuary beyond my wildest dreams. There were endlesstemples, causeways, museums, sunken statues and grand obelisks. Battles, history and an-cient personalities could be breathed in all day long. But, in all of that I had somehow neverthought about meeting modern Egypt head on. It was an amazement.

To wake up in Cairo is to find yourself on another planet or at least in a different world atanother time. There are 17 million people in Cairo and theyre all up before you are. Almosteveryone has started the morning meal on a charcoal fire. The haze wont clear until after-noon. There are motorbikes and cars and busses and donkeys and horse carts snarling thestreets. There are no pedestrian courtesies, you just run for your life and hope to get to theother curb in one piece. It seems like the whole city only has 5 traffic lights and two of thosearent working. People and vendors throng everywhere. Its crazy, busy and noisy yet thestreets are surprisingly clean.

The state police were everywhere. One could be spotted lounging in every third doorway. The Egyptian police force is larger than the army. I learned that police service is compulsoryfor young men. Its a smart way to keep huge numbers of relatively unemployable guys outof the hands of the mullahs and away from the clutches of the subversives. They dont earnmuch and they dont do much except cage cigarettes off the tourists but they dont make trou-

ble for the state. Cairo has a young population: one third is under 15 years of age and threefifths are under 30. They need jobs but those are hard to come by.

President Mubarak has held complete control of the country for 30 years. He appoints allpolitical positions right down to the mayors of the small villages in the countryside. All offi-cial journalists must be vetted by him. There is no free press. The concept of dissenting opin-ion is something of a window dressing. And yet in this tightly-held nation there was some-thing interesting happening.

WINTER LANDSCAPEcovered by a thick, white blanket, the land lies in icy stillness, sunlight reflecting in rainbow-hueson the billions of ice-crystals,like a scattering of brilliant diamonds.the vastness

of sparkling, clean snowagainst a cloudless, azure-blue skyis overwhelming in its brightness,as though being above the cloudsin an airplane.all living beingshave gone into sheltersand the windonly moves snow-driftsacross the road, like undulating snakes.

    WORLD DAY OF PRAYER 2011

How Many Loaves Have You? written

by the Women of ChileOn Friday, March 4th, the women of Chileinvite us to reflect on the many gifts thatGod has given each of us and our call toshare those gifts. Join with them in theWorld Day of Prayer celebration as weask a question that draws us into the bible, into the real context of Chilean lives andcommunities. There are several steps wewill take together as we address the ques-tion asked in the theme: How ManyLoaves Have You?

The Republic of Chile stretches between

the Pacific Ocean and the Andres Moun-tain Range in the extreme southwest ofSouth America. It borders north withPeru, Bolivia and Argentina to the east, with Antarctica to the south and the Pa-cific Ocean to the west.

In the 16th century Spanish explorers cameto Chile and went on to conquer it, al-though there was strong resistance fromthe indigenous peoples, especially theMapuches in the south. The conflict wenton for four centuries and continues eventoday with disputes about the ownership

of their lands. Chile began its independ-ence on September 18, 2010, the date es-tablished as National IndependenceDay.

Please join us, and invite your friends andfamily to attend the World Day of Prayerservice and learn more about Chile and itsunique culture and heritage. Join Chris-tians in more than 70 countries around theworld, and 2,000 communities across Can-ada who will gather on the World Day ofPrayer to pray and act in solidarity withthe people of Chile. The local World Day of Prayer service is

at Eastend United Church at 2:00 p.m.

Genuine poetry can communicate before it isunderstood.

pg.1 Besides Old Rocks and Sand

Every building was studded with satellitedishes from the heart of the city to themost distant village along the Nile. Everyperson carried sophisticated cell phones, messaging devices and blackberries. Ifthe truth is suppressed then people willbeam it in from the BBC and all over theMiddle East and Europe. Many womendid not wear traditional dress and theircell phones rang in their purses just asoften as any would in Toronto or Saska-toon. Its impossible to deny people ac-cess to information. Its impossible to lieto them forever.

Even then the whole population wasseething with the desire for more democ-ratic reform. Many boldly talked about iteven though it put them and their fami-lies at risk. What else could happen in acountry with such a huge population andso few valuable jobs and exports? One ofthe best-paying jobs was to be a tourguide. Ours was a former policeman whobecame a lawyer and then returned touniversity to study history and be a tourguide; an unbelievable circumstancefrom our point of view. However, theEgyptian legal system did not offer muchopportunity for careers in law.

Now, finally, change is taking place. With luck it will continue to be a peace-ful process. Will more democracy bringmore industry, more progress and morejobs? Or, will the fundamentalists seizethe opportunity to set the country back800 years? Throughout her history Egypthas never been a democracy. We canonly hope that she will achieve more ofher real potential. Absolute power haslead to corruption and one of the worstland ownership structures in the world. Ifthe people have any chance it must benow. JK

Listen, real poetry doesnt say anything; itjust ticks off the possibilities. Opens alldoors. You can walk through any one that

    suits you.Jim Morrison
