    Responsibility for Influence

The tragic circumstance in the United States in which a US Congresswoman was shot and 6people killed raises questions for everyone regardless of nationality or politics. When is aperson responsible for his actions and those of other people whom he has influenced? Arethe limits of personal responsibility so gray that they can be manipulated with impunity.

We remember that King Henry II of England appointed his best friend, Thomas Becket, tobecome the Archbishop of Canterbury despite Beckets warning that this move would createan unavoidable conflict of interest between them. Indeed, there were so many disputes andconfrontations between the single-minded monarch and the Archbishop that he was driveninto exile for 6 years. When Becket returned to England, the irate King Henry blurted outone evening among his cronies, Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest? Four knightstook this as an open invitation to murder the Archbishop and did so in bloody fashion onDec. 29, 1170 in Canterbury Cathedral. Becket became a saint and Henry is still hung withthe responsibility for his murder to this day. Even a king could not evade his culpability;have the rules changed so much in the last 800 years that they dont apply now?

When people and their locations are targeted with crosshairs on websites, when people areexhorted to come fully armed to public meetings and when it is stated that the opposition oreven that heads of state should be eliminated then there is a responsibility for whatever ac-tions follow. The internet is not a closed room. It is an open forum that includes the entireworld. We have to accept that what we state publically can be an incitement to action. Weown that responsibility. Those in public office have an even greater degree of fiduciary re-sponsibility. There are legitimate moral limits to what one can do with this kind of influ-ence. People need to know that they will be held accountable for their unwarranted use of allmedia when inciting others to hatred, assault or murder.

The responsibility lies with every individual to judge carefully what is being publicallypromulgated and to identify what is clearly not acceptable for the good of society. People, factions, media and websites that are aggressively over the limits cant just be shunned.Damaging acts cant be waved away. They must be pointed to and decried. That is the es-sence of freedom of speech; not the right to speak stupidity but to speak against it. Its justas necessary right here should the need arise as it is everywhere else. We should have zerotolerance for evasion of responsibility at all levels: personal, public, corporate and financial.Weve let this slide to too long as it is. Dont put up with it anymore. JK
