    Guest Commentary:

Were All Just a Bunch of Junkies!

So hey, listen up grain famers and cattlemen and women!! Have you ever heard the story of the kidwho has it all going for him. Hes finally noticed and everyone wants to be his friend. Including thesmart looking guy in the pinstripe suit who offers him a line, a puff or a pretty pink pill and says, thiswill make you smarter, faster, more desirable, the youll be rich and you wont lose control. The kidtakes the pill, puff or line and gets hooked, life is great, things are going his way. One day he takes alook in the mirror and sees lines and scars on his face. Hes no longer desirable to anyone, especiallythe guy in the pinstripe suit, whos been there done that and now moves on to the next victim. So thiskid will spend the rest of his life trying to correct the damage that he has done because he gave intotemptation. Doesnt sound good, not a happy story and especially not a story you would like to relate

to.The cattle industry has not been great in the past two decades or so. Cattlemen have been faced withBSE and farmers have had to deal with a dictatorship known as the Wheat Board. Then all of a suddenour wealthy neighbouring Alberta land owners decide that they have had enough of the oil and gasindustry taking advantage of them and they want more. So the big guys move onto the next best thing Saskatchewan!! Virtually untouched and desperate for money. So, this is where the sweet-talkingguy in the cheap suit, driving his jacked-up 4x4 with a red and white license plate, comes into play.Similar to the dealer in the pinstripe suit but this guy is only a guppy in a great big sea of smart guys inpinstripe suits. Yep, many of us have had the pleasure of seeing this guy pull up to our house and wavemoney in our faces. How many of you have been delighted and how many of you have turned this guyaway? If you turn him away hell just go to your neighbour, offer him the same sweet deal and theyllget your oil or gas anyway, so you best take the money. So you go along with hundreds of other land-owners in the country, not thinking of the consequences and the environmental impact it will have onyou and your land in the future. Just like an addict, we refuse to look at the future and remain in de-

nial. We laugh and mock the crazy environmentalists saying, theyre wrong, full of it, damn treehuggers.

After the big guys are done with us it wont just a Sunday morning coming down. It will take centu-ries to come down from; actually I dont think we ever will. So picture this because this is real and thiswill happen, no drug addict comes out free and clean on the other side. The southwest of Saskatche-wan is a unique and amazing place. As farmers and ranchers we love it and take pride in living here, its quiet and the scenery is beautiful. Weve got it all! Or so we did have it all. That was before theoil and gas showed up. pg. 1 - Were All Just a Bunch of Junkies!

Now, if you take a Sunday drive around the countryside youll see its littered with black barrels. Back roads that are now as busy as highways with strangers driving big 4x4 trucks (with those same red andwhite license plates) that rarely wave or slow down for that matter. There are huge chunks of earthmoved and scraped to the side, and one thing in particular that I find the most frightening, is the stenchof rotten eggs. Our water! What the heck? What about our water? Our life line, without it we cant

survive and neither can our cows, our children or our grandchildren. The environmental impact is, of course, the worst part of the outcome but one thing that might catch your attention is the impact it willall have on your wallet. This will impact things like the price of your groceries and, even worse, theprice of land. On thing that has been so great about Saskatchewan is that a young person has been ableto virtually start his or her farming or cattle operation from modest means and expand into a progres-sive business. Just lately I heard of land prices of $90 thousand per quarter and beyond. So, all thatextra money that the oil and gas industry is flashing in out faces doesnt really matter if we still cantafford to buy our groceries or to expand our farming and ranching operations. Do you see this pictureyet? Were all just a bunch of junkies! The high is great but sooner or later well have to come down.

Lets not try to get rid of the oil and gas, we all know that would be like trying to slay a dragon. Notgoing to happen, nope not a chance. We do however need to be realistic about the consequences andstay informed about what is happening to our land, water and environment, because you just cannotdeny we need fresh air and water to survive and so do our animals, plants and children. Ask questions, get informed. There are many surface rights groups out there that will inform you of your rights aslandowners. Dont be ignorant and turn a blind eye for fear that you will chase the big guys away. The big guys arent going anywhere, were sitting on a gold mine and theyre going to cash in,then leave us with the mess when they are done.
