EDGE XPERT IOT-READY SOLUTIONS

To simplify the development, procurement and roll-out of Industrial Edge IoT applications, IOTech is working in partnership with key hardware vendors to build a series of IoT-Ready Solutions.

IOTech’s Edge Xpert software platform is combined with leading Edge Gateway and Industrial Server technology to produce pre-integrated IoT solutions that are ready to deploy in the field. Edge Xpert is delivered specifically configured to fully unlock the power and connectivity capabilities of the hardware without any programming.

PRE-CONFIGURED AND READY TO DEPLOY

Edge Xpert is a commercial quality implementation of the EdgeX Foundry open source platform and provides a robust and feature-rich commercial off the shelf (COTS) solution for Edge Computing that users can deploy without fear of vendor lock-in.

In addition to the standard features of Edge Xpert, such as ingestion and aggregation of data from a variety of industrial protocols, edge storage, control and analytics, Edge Xpert includes connectors (Device Services) that can use the built-in features and drivers of each IoT-Ready hardware device. Development effort and time to market are greatly reduced because the solutions are ready to roll out.

DELL INDUSTRIAL EDGE GATEWAY AND EDGE XPERT IOT-READY SOLUTIONS

The first IoT-Ready Solutions to come to market are based on Dell Technologies’ 3000 and 5000 series industrial-grade Edge Gateways. As standard, each Dell 3000 and Dell 5000 Edge Gateway includes support for technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Zigbee, GPS, CANopen and MEMS. The IoT-Ready Solutions provide standard connectivity for these communication technologies, enabling users to simply configure Edge Xpert to enable device communication (for example, with a Zigbee sensor) rather than requiring custom software development.

cases. The range allows IoT analytics and security to be extended to the edge of a network and each 3000 Gateway model can address a range of use cases.

The Dell 5000 Edge Gateway range was designed for demanding IoT applications. It allows applications to collect, analyze, relay and act on Internet of Things data at the edge of the network and was purpose-built for Building and Industrial Automation.

• Dell 5000 – designed for commercial use, offers cost-effective security and manageability tools for operations professionals

• Dell 5100 – designed for industrial use, a highly effective industrial IoT device, that supports powerful IoT solutions even in extreme conditions

IOTECH EDGE XPERT

Edge Xpert leverages the Linux Foundation’s EdgeX Foundry open source IoT platform to provide a commercial-quality open platform suitable for both Industrial and Consumer IoT Edge applications.

Edge Xpert uses the latest stable release of EdgeX Foundry to create a commercially supported solution from the baseline open source technology. This approach minimizes any risk of open source adoption and is key to users deploying in mission and business critical industrial systems.

In addition to the baseline EdgeX Foundry services, Edge Xpert provides value-add through enhanced features and additional services to produce a powerful and complete Edge IoT platform when used with Dell 3000 and 5000 Edge Gateways.The standard distribution of Edge Xpert provides the following services and features:

• Core Services: Core Data (storage enhanced with Redis database technology), Command, Metadata, Registry and Configuration (implemented with Consul)

• Device Services: Modbus (RTU and TCP), BACnet (MSTP and IP), OPC UA, MQTT, Bluetooth, Grove Sensor, File, Virtual. SDKs in C and Go to create new Device Services

• Supporting Services: Rules Engine (Node-RED), Scheduling, Alerts and Notifications, Logging, MQTT Broker (Mosquitto), Time Series Database (InfluxDB), Dashboarding (Grafana)

• Export Services: REST/HTTP, MQTT, AWS IoT Platform, Google Cloud IoT Core, Microsoft Azure IoT Hub Application SDK to create new Exports

• Security: Secret Store (using Vault), Reverse Proxy (using Kong)

• Tooling and Management Services: Edge Xpert Deployment CLI , Edge Xpert Management UI, Container Management (using Portainer)

• Dell Edge Gateway Add-Ons: in addition to the standard features of Edge Xpert, the following Dell Edge Gateway specific Device Services (connectors) can be optionally purchased as part of the Dell Connectivity pack: Zigbee, CANopen, GPS, MEMS, BLE
