Father’s Day

Father’s Day has been celebrated in America for

over 100 years. The holiday was first celebrated

when a woman from Spokane, WA, wanted to find a

way to honor her father after listening to a sermon

on Mother’s Day. The Spokane Ministerial

Association and local YMCA supported it, and so

the first Father’s Day was celebrated in 1910 on

June 19. However, it wasn’t until 1972, 58 years after

President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day

official, that the day of honoring fathers became a

nationwide holiday in the United States.

President Richard Nixon established a national

observance that Father’s Day will be held the third

Sunday of June.

American flag’s birthday. Eventually, the idea

made its way to Washington, D.C.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a

proclamation establishing Flag Day, and

President Harry Truman signed an Act of

Congress declaring June 14 as Flag Day in 1949.
