Here at Edgewood Country Club, our Culinary Staff is full of individuals with special talents and skill. Although it may not be known to all, it is our pleasure to accommodate special request that are made in order to provide a more personal dining experience. Please let me and my team know, so we can make that special evening or event come true. Summer brings out a great variety of vegetables and none that is celebrated as much as asparagus. Without a doubt, it’s the favorite and most requested among our members. I enjoy its versatility in salads along with different preparations that can accompany an entrée or an evening on the deck and patio with your grill. Just by making a simple citrus vinaigrette or topping it with lemon butter and pine nuts, the flavors of the asparagus brings success to any dish. Here’s a quick but flavorful recipe that warrens trying. In preparing your asparagus its best to steam it until bright green, tender, yet still having a bit of crispness to the stem.

Playing in the heat means doing the best you can to conserve your energy. Here are five ways that will help you battle the summer elements. 1.) Stay hydrated. This is NOT as simple as it sounds. Drinking plenty of fluids during your round will not be enough. You need to actually begin at least one day prior to your round. Possibly even earlier if you're flying to your golf destination. Avoid caffeine and alcohol 2.) Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of moisture wicking material. Adidas Clima Chill apparel works great for shirts and pants, and other brands have their own fabrics that will help keep you cool. The goal here is to keep the clothes breathable and not have it stick to you when you start to sweat. You'll feel more comfortable, stay cooler and play better. 3.) Use sunblock. Much of the newer golf apparel has sunblock technology built in. In fact, I've even advised players, that have the right type of materials in their shirt, to wear long sleeves on hot days - simply for the sunblocking properties of the clothes. On your skin that is exposed, use some type of sunscreen. SPF 50 is not too much. 4.) Wear a hat. Regular style caps are great; but they're not perfect. The bucket hat with the brim that goes all the way around may be more effective. But a loose, light hat will do wonders in keeping the sun off of you. It's not just about avoiding sunburn, it's maintaining your energy level. 5.) Eat light, but eat nonetheless. Again, if we want to maintain your concentration and energy levels, starving yourself is not going to help. But the last thing you want is to feel heavy and lethargic due to a big meal before needing to walk around for five or six hours in the hot sun. Just keep thinking it’s not raining and fall is just around the corner!!!

Monday, September 23rd-27th Aerification (golf course, driving

range and 19th hole closed)

The golf course and driving range will be closed starting Monday, September 23rd through Thursday, September 26th for aerification. Aerification is merely a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for golf course. When you see those little holes, remember that without them the greens would eventually die. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow at 3/16-inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. In good soil, they get the oxygen from tiny pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. We understand this is a frustrating process to you as a member but want you to know

it is a very important step in maintaining the conditioning of the golf course. As a reminder, if you are looking for a place to play during this time, ECC has reciprocity

with Berry Hills Country Club (304)744-8790, Guyan CC (304) 736-5233 Sleepy Hollow (304) 757-6581, Parkersburg Country Club (304) 295-8551,. Please call their

respective pro shops to setup a tee time.

Tee times for the following weekend (September 28th and September 29th) will be taken by phone on Friday, September 27th and on the website after 10am on

Thursday, September 26th.

The heat was definitely on in July. We struggled to keep Mother Nature from taking some turf. But heading into August I think we held our own, with the exception of a few spots. If you notice areas of turf that look white, we are killing some crabgrass, goose grass, and all so some nut sedge. Cooling greens and watering will likely go on into early September. This process of keeping the turf alive under high temperatures does cause the ball to roll a lot slower. Golf course superintendents also cause the ball to roll slower because we back off of mowing, rolling when we can and when we need to for turf health. We will speed them back up soon. Golf Course superintendent Kenny Eggleston
