She taught secondary school for 39 years, served four years on the Edina School Board and two years as President of the Edina League of Women Voters. Bob Benson flew combat missions as a helicopter pilot with the 9th Infantry Division for one year. On his second tour, he flew General Abrams, Commander of all US Vietnam Forces. Ralph B. Campbell III, an advanced practice chemical dependency counselor, was active in the student protest move- ment while a student at the University of Minnesota in the early 70’s. Arrested by police twice during campus demonstrations against the Viet Nam war, Campbell was also a founder of MPIRG, the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group. Tom Connell taught Social Studies, in- cluding AP US History, in Edina for 26 years and in 2010 was nominated for Education Minnesota Teacher of the Year. He currently serves as President of Education Minnesota/Edina. Nguyen Dang is a first grade teacher at Concord elementary school. She was born and grew up in Vietnam. She came to the United States to reunite with her father in 1983. She entered 5th grade speaking no English, and having aended school only through 2nd grade in Vietnam. Marshall Schwartz graduated from West Point, served almost three years in Vietnam, and has authored the book, “Edina Veterans Memorial: A Lasting Tribute,” while serving as historian on the commiee for that project. Jim Strom was draſted into the Army in 1966 and served in an artillery unit with the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta from October 1967 to July 1968. He is a re- tired aorney and for the last 15 years of his career was a fiſth grade teacher in Edina. The Vietnam War shaped and defined a generation. Join us to learn more and gain insight into how the war was experienced and is remembered by people connected to Edina. Through conversations, stories and a moderated panel discussion, Edina Remembers the Vietnam War will provide an opportunity for community members to remember, honor and understand their experience of 50 years ago.
