PALM SPRINGS, California — Sandra Bullock shared the painful results of Googling herself, Meryl Streep shadowboxed on-stage, and Tom Hanks braced for awards season’s “celebrity mule train” at the year’s first glitzy Hollywood gala. Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams and Bradley Coo-per were among the stars who cracked jokes and praised one another Saturday night at the opening of the

Palm Springs International Film Festival, a desert warm-up of

sorts for more closely watched industry events in coming months.

Honors were announced well in advance and the ceremony wasn’t televised, lessening pressure on win-ners and allowing for self-effacing, sometimes lengthy acceptance speech-es. The festival is celebrat-

ing its 25th year but it’s only relatively

recently become a star-studded s top on the awards circuit.

U2’s Bono s p o ke p a s -

sionately about artist activism and the fight against AIDS. Bruce Dern reveled in industry praise for his “Nebraska” after a half-century career, saying: “A bunch of you seem to have gotten together and to have said, ‘Bruce Dern can play.’” Pre-senters included Gary Oldman, Ewan McGregor, Jane Fonda and Idris Elba.

Bullock, also nominated for Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe awards for her performance as an astronaut in “Gravity,” delighted the crowd of over 2,000 by reading online comments about herself. “Julia (Roberts), apparently you and I are in a dispute over George Clooney. We talked about this. It’s shared custody and we both are fine with it,” she joked.

McConaughey, honored for his lead role in “Dallas Buyers Club,” also proudly noted his movie “Mud” and small part in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “I had a sensational year of act-ing,” he said, wearing a bowtie and shimmering gold tuxedo jacket. Streep, who stars alongside Roberts in “August: Osage County” and is also up for Globe and SAG honors, was given the festival’s icon award.

“I don’t feel like an icon. Most of the days I feel like ‘I can’t,’” she said. But, she allowed, jabbing fists toward the crowd, “I feel like I’m an example now in my dotage of the fact that you just can’t put those old gals out to pasture. We’ve got a lot of stuff still to say.”

There was self-congratulation all around at the quality of awards season films, from “12 Years A Slave,” whose director Steve McQueen was honored, to “American Hustle,” whose cast received an ensemble award. Several actors noted that they had been catching up on colleagues’ movies with DVD screeners and visits to the theatre.

DENVER — A fiery plane crash at the Aspen airport Sun-day afternoon killed one person and injured two others, one severely, Colorado authorities said.

Paramount’s “The Marked Ones” de-buted in second place with $18.2 million, a total that includes Thursday night screen-ings, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film is a stand-alone story spun off from the lucrative, low-budget horror franchise “Paranormal Activity,” the fifth of which will be released in October.

But it wasn’t able to overcome Dis-ney’s animated “Frozen,” which has been a hit for family audiences for the last seven weeks. It has now surpassed $600 million worldwide, making it the sec-ond highest Disney Animation release, behind “The Lion King.” It will soon pass that film’s $312 million domestic haul, too.

It’s extremely rare for a film to lead the box office in its seventh weekend, a

feat accomplished by the likes of “Ava-tar” and, to go further back, “Legends of the Fall.” It’s rarer still for a film to retake the box-office lead so late in its theatrical run. The last movie to do so was Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” in 2004, according to box-office tracker Rentrak.

Another hold-over, Warner Bros.’ “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” came in third with $16.3 million in its fourth week of release after narrowly topping the busy Christmas weekend box office. Like “Frozen,” Peter Jack-son’s second installment of his “Hobbit” trilogy has benefitted from the lengthy holiday moviegoing season. Its domestic cumulative total is $229.6 million. The snow and icy temperatures battering the

Midwest and Northeast likely tempered the weekend’s box-office business.

“Everyone probably suffered a little bit from the weather,” said Don Harris, head of domestic distribution for Para-mount. “It looked like no matter what movie it was, it was half a million to a $1 million less on Friday and Saturday than you would have been expecting, just based on what the norms were.”

“The Marked Ones,” made for just $5 million and starring a largely Hispanic cast, was the lone new wide release in the marketplace, as the large batch of late December releases looked to separate themselves from the pack.

Successes include Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” ($63.3 million in two weeks for Paramount), David O. Russell’s acclaimed “American Hustle” ($88.7 million in four weeks for Sony) and the Will Ferrell sequel “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” (well past $100 million domestically in three weeks for Paramount).

Based on observation on Sunday (Jan 5), a number of points on the second floor of the building seemed to have been filled with puddles. Allegedly, it was the seepage of rainwater having occurred since the past few days. Besides, the project

worth IDR 4.6 billion seemed to have not been totally accomplished. Ceramic divider mounted on the second floor looked untidy and the completion of walls seemed to have been worked on haphazardly.

When asked for his confirmation

regarding this matter, the Head of Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, acknowledged the refurbishment and revitaliza-tion project undertaken by PT Catur Harapan Utama had been accomplished and remained un-der maintenance period. Related to puddles on the floor inside the building, Sudibya said it was the seepage from the roof of the old building that flowed to roof gutter. As a result, the newly built roof gutter looked to leak.

“Such water seepage was com-ing from the roof of the old building spreading to the roof gutter. Such

condition has been revealed in the joint session,” he said.

He added the fund worth IDR 4.6 billion from the state budget 2013 was used to complete the building on the west and east side of the upper floor of the Kidul Market. Meanwhile, the indoor and outdoor would be worked on by the middle of this year. “The indoor and out-door of the building will be built in 2014, so relocation of traders will wait for the completion of the construction,” he added.

In the meantime, a legislator of Bangli House, Gede Koyan Eka Putra, said the project with such

large amount of fund should never result in any problems.

The government, according to Koyan, needed to supervise, evaluate and take decisive action if the result was beyond the contract agreement made. As reference for the evaluation, the government could utilize the design plan and contract agreement. “Hopefully, the supervision can be carried out by our colleagues in the legislative and so can our executive colleagues. If the result is obviously inappropri-ate, the government should take decisive action,” Koyan affirmed. (ina)

DENPASAR - Policy of Pertamina to raise the price of the 12-kg LPG has caused an exodus of LPG users from the 12-kg to 3-kg cylinder. The increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from January 1, 2014 made people switch to 3-kg cylinder which is still subsidized by the government. So, the 3-kg LPG was not only purchased by middle-to-lower class community, but also by the rich and middle-to-upper class community.

It was admitted by Director of Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) of Bali, Putu Armaya. The high price disparity of the LPG did not only burden the middle to lower class of community, but it had also caused the middle to upper class to switch

to the use of 3-kg LPG which was still sub-sidized and experiencing no price hike.

“By all means, there will be migration from the use of 12-kg to 3-kg cylinder. The middle to upper class will use the 3-kg LPG which should become the right of the middle to lower class people due to the high price disparity,” said Putu Armaya in Denpasar, Sunday (Jan 5).

Additionally, he said if the price of the 12-kg LPG was raised, it would trigger an illegal gas refilling action of the 3-kg to 12-kg cylinder. It happened because the price disparity between the 12-kg and 3-kg LPG would go further. “The price increase in the 12-kg LPG will also potentially lead to fraud and smuggling,” he said.

Price increase in the 12-kg LPG also led to the diminishing sales of this type of

LPG. Even, with the increase of 68 percent, the 12-kg LPG usually sold for IDR 75,000 then rose to IDR 122,000. He estimated there would be a decrease in turnover for the 12-kg LPG cylinder.

“Indeed, we so far have not found any problem this week, but these problems will start to appear about a week after the price hike,” said Muliartha, an LPG agent in Denpasar.

By all means, the price hike of the 12-kg LPG price would have an implication for venture capital. With an increase of up to 68 percent, when agencies would like to have the same amount of LPG stock, then they should inject additional capital. Another phenomenon occurred was the shifting of consumer from the use of 12-kg to 3-kg cylinder. The impact would definitely cause a surge in the demand for 3-kg LPG, while, on the other hand, it kindled scarcity of the 3-kg LPG cylinder.

Meanwhile, Distribution Statistics Divi-sion Head of BPS Bali, Amirudin, estimated the price hike to the 12-kg LPG would dominantly affect the foodstuff commodity. “Impact of the 12-kg LPG price hike will lead to groceries. However, the impact of this condition will not be as great as the impact of the fuel price hike,” he said.

Pertamina indeed had raised the price of LPG as of January 2014. Meanwhile, in the field the BPS Bali had noted that since last November the price development of LPG tended to affect the rate of inflation in Bali, whether it occurred to the 3-kg or 12-kg LPG. “At the same time, this condition be-comes the second boosting factor following the government policy that increased the fuel price last year,” he said. NEGARA - Enforcement of parking restric-tion on Jalan Ngurah Rai, around the Negara Public Market from the end of last week reaped an objection from entrepreneurs. They claimed to get the impact such as the very drastic decline in sales because of the restriction. Previous parking lot in front of the shopping complex had already been banned.

One if the entrepreneurs, I Ketut Tantrawan Bisma, admitted on Sunday (Jan 5), that he suf-fered a drastic decrease in sales as the impact of the restriction.

His party hoped there would be a policy allow-ing a single-row parking in front of the shopping complex. Employers were also ready to help real-ize the barrier marker independently. So, the park-ing order could also be maintained. They wanted a win-win solution and impermanent policies at least until the making of basement parking plan could be realized.

“We support the government policy, but for the time being we expect there is dispensation first,” he said. According to him, the employers also hoped to meet and deliver their aspiration in person to the Regent of Jembrana I Putu Artha. As planned, the representatives of entrepreneurs would make audience with the regent on Monday (Jan 6).

Earlier on Friday (Jan 3), Jembrana Police and Transportation Agency disciplined the national road section around the Negara Public Market previously used for parking space. However, the discipline was carried out to the southern side, while the parking space on the northern side was still allowed for two rows. Such discipline was made because the parking space was assessed to be chaotic and the road body was getting narrower. (kmb26)

BANGLI - refurbishment project of Kidul Market in Bangli funded by the state budget 2013 has been completed. However, condi-tion of the building under the maintenance phase is quite alarming. Some parts of the building floor having been installed with ceramic tile look to be inundated by water. MANGUPURA - As political year, the year 2014 draws special attention from Badung government. Democratic event in the form of legislative and presidential elections is worried to affect the number of tourists visiting Bali in general and Badung in particular if the politi-cians and community leaders do not play an active role in keeping the situation to remain conducive.

The Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, recently revealed that political year actually did not affect the tourist arrival provided that the community leaders should be able to maintain the conditions to remain favorable. On that account, he asked the legislator candidates,

politicians and their constituents to continuously promote the efforts to maintain safety and comfort so that tourists did not feel disturbed.

“Public figures and politicians should be able to keep their con-stituents in order to help create the atmosphere to remain safe and comfortable,” he said.

He said that as an effort to anticipate, Badung government continued to coordinate with rel-evant parties such as the Indone-sian Military and National Police. Through these efforts and full sup-port of the community, Gde Agung was optimistic the target of tourist arrivals could be realized.

A similar opinion was also expressed by Chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurant

Association (PHRI) of Badung, I GN Rai Surya Wijaya. He said that political events this year would not affect tourist arrival although the elections especially the legislative election potentially led to conflict in society. Even, his party was optimistic that tourist arrivals this year could increase by 7 to 10 percent from 2013.

This optimism was supported by the successful implementation of the APEC, Miss World and other international events in Bali. Nevertheless, his party remained to hope that all parties could keep the situation to remain conducive so the democratic events in 2014 could run safely, solicitously and peacefully, while the tourism image could be well maintained. Spokesperson of Angkasa Pura I, Sherly Yunita, when asked for her confirmation justified there had been a power outage from 09:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Co-General Manager of Ang-kasa Pura I, IGN Arditha, when contacted also confirmed that the power outage happened due to interference in the internal MCB at

the airport. “The power went out due to interference in our internal MCB. As the impact, 11 aircrafts of domestic flights, especially those with destination to Surabaya and Jakarta, were delayed,” he said.

He explained the previous power outage occurred at 7:55 a.m. be-cause the PLN power was down, so it should be backed up with a

generator. The power was on at 08:00 a.m., but not long after that the power outage happened again until about 10:00 a.m. “At the mo-ment, we are making evaluation regarding the cause of such power outage. However, the flight has now been normal,” he said.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of PLN Bali, Wayan Redika, denied if the outage occurred due to the supply of PLN. “A friend who hap-pened to be there contacted me at 8:58 a.m. when the power outage occurred at the airport. I directly co-ordinated with the South Bali Area

Manager and Kuta Area Manager to follow it up. In fact, it did not source from the PLN,” he said.

Based on the coordination, Redika described there was absolutely no problem with the PLN electricity sup-ply to the airport. At 10:05 a.m., there was a report received via Twitter by PLN Contact Center 123 and at the same time the officers of PLN Kuta came down to location. “After check-ing, power supply for the airport was normal, but it was detected a reduc-tion in loads up to 60A,” he said.

He predicted the power outage happened due to disruption in the

internal installation owned by the airport. “It means there was no at all power supplies disconnected for the service of the Ngurah Rai Airport this morning,” he stated.

He added the current power supply in Bali amounted to 790 MW generated by the Pesanggaran diesel- and gas-fueled power plant (250 MW), Gilimanuk gas-fueled power plant (130 MW), Pemaron diesel- and gas-fueled power plant (210 MW) and Java and Bali subma-rine cable (2x100 MW). Meanwhile, the peak load ever reached 721 MW (Nov 11, 2013). (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - Dozens of domestic flights at the Ngurah Rai In-ternational Airport were delayed on Sunday (Jan 5). This condition occurred due to a power outage.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service published a draft environmental impact state-ment Friday as part of the process for potential deregulation of the seeds, which can now be used only in tightly controlled field trials. Deregulation would allow commercial develop-ment of the seeds and presumably lead to greater use of the herbicide. The USDA has oversight over the seeds, not the herbicide.

The public has 45 days to com-ment on its report. The Environmen-tal Protection Agency is conducting a separate review of 2,4-D, although it previously found it safe to use. Some corn and soybean farmers have eagerly anticipated a next generation of herbicide-resistant seeds as weeds immune to Monsanto’s Roundup, known generically as glyphosate, become more common. Most corn and soybeans grown in the U.S. are

genetically engineered, usually with the Roundup resistant trait.

But some scientists and environ-mentalists regard the development with alarm, noting 2,4-D can eas-ily drift beyond the area where it is sprayed, threatening neighboring crops and wild plants.

The USDA’s plant inspection agency found the greatest risk from the seeds, developed by Dow Agro-Sciences, was that increased use

of the herbicide could hasten the evolution of weeds resistant to it. But it said resistance could happen anyway because 2,4-D, sold by Dow AgroSciences and other companies, is the third most-used weed killer in the nation.

The herbicide has had limited use in corn and soybean farming because it becomes toxic to the plants early in their growth. The new seeds would al-low farmers to use 2,4-D throughout the plants’ lives.

The EPA will look at the impact of expanded use of 2,4-D in a report expected to be released for public comment in the coming months. The EPA and APHIS are expected to make final decisions simultaneously on use of the chemical and seeds. The timing

on that is uncertain.Dow AgroSciences has asked

APHIS to deregulate one variety of corn and two varieties of soybeans. Both soybean varieties resist 2,4-D, but they differ in their immunities to other herbicides. All three seeds have immunity to multiple weed killers. APHIS said farmers could help deter the development of 2,4-D resistance by using a variety of means to fight weeds and not relying solely on it.

Scientists do not believe 2,4-D was responsible for the health prob-lems in Vietnam veterans that have been linked to Agent Orange. In-stead, they have focused on dioxin, a cancer-causing contaminant found in another ingredient known as 2,4,5-T. EPA banned 2,4,5-T in 1985.

CAIRO — Egypt’s minister of antiquities says Japanese archeologists have unearthed the tomb of an ancient beer brewer in the city of Luxor that is more than 3,000 years old.

Mohammed Ibrahim says Friday the tomb dates back to the Ramesside period and belongs to the chief “maker of beer for gods of the dead” who was also the head of a warehouse. He added that the walls of the tomb’s chambers contain “fabulous designs and colors, reflecting details of daily life ... along with their

religious rituals.”The head of the Japanese team, Jiro Kondo, says the

tomb was discovered during work near another tomb belonging to a statesmen under Amenhotep III, grand-father of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun.

MILWAUKEE — The U.S. Department of Agriculture opened the door Friday to commercial sales of corn and soybean seeds genetically engineered to resist the weed killer 2,4-D, which is best known as an ingredient in the Vietnam War-era herbicide Agent Orange. The U.S. military stopped using Agent Orange in 1971, and it has not been produced since the 1970s. Scientists don’t believe 2,4-D, which is legal and commonly used by gardeners and some farmers, was responsible for the health problems linked to Agent Orange.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s re-fusal to heed opposition demands to step down and appoint a neutral caretaker to oversee the election led to the boycott, undermining the legitimacy of the vote. Opposition activists responded with attacks, strikes and transportation block-ades in unrest that has already left at least 275 people dead since last year.

“We never expected such an elec-tion. For such a situation both the government and opposition are respon-sible. They don’t want to establish de-mocracy,” said Aminul Islam, a Dhaka resident who refused to vote. Police opened fire to stop protesters from seizing a polling center in northern Rangpur district, killing two people. In a similar incident in neighboring Nilphamari district, police fired into about two dozens of protesters, leaving two people dead. Police gave no further details, but Dhaka’s Daily Star newspa-per said the three men belonged to the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party.

Elsewhere, police said suspected opposition activists stabbed to death a polling official, and local media reported that attackers torched more than 127 school buildings across the country in overnight attacks. The buildings were to be used as polling stations. So far, the turnout appeared to be low. The vot-ing began at 8 a.m. but local television stations showed mostly empty polling stations.

By midmorning, polling was sus-pended in at least 120 centers because of

attacks, burning of ballots and election materials, an election official said on condition of anonymity as he was not al-lowed to speak to reporters. At a polling station in Dhaka’s Mirpur district, only 25 out of 24,000 registered voters cast their ballot in the first two hours, with polling officials saying fear of violence and absence of any strong opposition kept people away.

The chaos could exacerbate eco-nomic woes in this deeply impoverished country of 160 million and lead to radi-calization in a strategic pocket of South Asia, analysts say.

Hasina’s refusal to quit and name an independent caretaker administra-tion, which resulted in the boycott by opposition parties, means the election will mainly be a contest between can-didates from the ruling Awami League and its allies. Awami League candidates are running unchallenged in more than half of the country’s 300 parliamentary constituencies. Bangladesh has a grim history of political violence, including the assassinations of two presidents and 19 failed coup attempts since its inde-pendence from Pakistan in 1971.

“I am fearful that deadly violence could return, people would continue to suffer, political forces with extreme views could emerge in the face of gov-ernment crackdown and repressive mea-sures,” said Asif Nazrul, a law teacher and analyst. “This election will just pol-lute our very new democracy by shrink-ing the space for opposite views.”

TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday that he wants to explain to leaders in China and South Korea about his visits to the Yasukuni Shrine in To-kyo, which honors the country’s war dead, but Beijing again called on him to correct his views on Japan’s role in World War II. Abe said that Japan has not made any direct overtures, but he hopes the leaders can meet to help resolve antagonism over territorial disputes and historical issues.

“At the moment, there is no plan for a summit meeting, but since there are some difficulties and issues we should be speaking together without setting any preconditions,” he told reporters after making a new year’s visit to the Grand Shrine of Ise, in western Japan. “I would really like to explain the intent of my visits to the Yasukuni Shrine directly to them,” Abe said. “We are not making any direct approach on this, but the door to dialogue is open. I would like to hold Japan-China and Japan-South Korea summit meetings.”

Japan colonized Korea and occupied

parts of China before and during World War II and that often brutal legacy taints relations with its neighbors decades later. China and South Korea reacted angrily to Abe’s Dec. 26 visit to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, where 14 class A war criminals are enshrined among the 2.5 million war dead. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has said earlier Abe won’t be welcome in Beijing until he admits his mistake.

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that to improve relations with Beijing, Abe “needs to correctly view and deeply reflect on the Japan’s militarist history of external inva-sion and colonialism, show sincerity and make concrete efforts to improve ties with neighboring countries.”

“Judging from his moves, Prime Minister Abe is hypocritical when he pays lip-service to improving relations with China. It is he himself who closed the door to dialogue with China,” she said in a daily briefing. South Korean President Park Geun-hye blamed Tokyo for the strained ties, and said that any summit with Abe could be held only after sufficient preparations.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

One of the Buleleng residents from Busungbiu subdistrict died with the suspect of rabies, Friday night (Jan 3). The patient had the identities like the initials INS, male sex and 37 years old. The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Jan 4) justified there had been a report on the death of Bali resident alleged to have been caused by rabies.

“Before he died on Friday night, the victim was under treatment in Buleleng Hospital for two days with symptoms of being similar to rabies as such as phobia of water, air and light as well as salivation,” said Suarjaya. However, to ascertain whether the resident who died was actually positive to rabies or not, according to Suarjaya, his party was still waiting for the result of labora-tory test first. “Specimen has been taken and will be examined in the

lab to ensure whether it is positive,” added Suarjaya.

Suarjaya further explained if the victim had a history of dog bite about 16 days before. The dog was a gift from one of the victim’s friends and then it disappeared after biting the victim. “It is said the bite wound was small. Besides, the victim did not get any anti-rabies vaccine (VAR),” said Suarjaya.

From the results of search in the area where the victim lived, all the

dogs had been vaccinated and had never been found a dog that died from rabies. However, one thing to be feared was the rabies infection from outside the area because of the biting dog was known a gift from a person whose origin was unknown.

Currently, according to Suarjaya, his party was awaiting the result of laboratory test. Meanwhile, the VAR stock had been available amounting to 49,306 vials and 461 vials of anti-rabies serum (SAR). Such inventory

had been distributed to each rabies center throughout Bali.

He appealed to the community to remain vigilant against rabies. “When bitten by dog, rush to look for wound care and get the anti-rabies vaccine no matter how small the wound is,” he suggested. Vac-cinating pet dogs on regular basis is also becoming an important mea-sure to prevent rabies infection. By the end of 2013, rabies had claimed 146 lives. (san)

GIANYAR - Theft case afflicting the family of former Deputy Chief of Gianyar Police, the late I Wayan Kuta, Sunday (Jan 5), was considered moderately unique. Four tires completely mounted in the car parked in the house garage at Belega Kangin, Belega village, Blahbatuh, disap-peared. The tires along with alloy wheels vanished so the victim suffered a loss worth IDR 10 million.

According to Ni Ketut Wati, 59, wife of the late, the tires and wheels of Honda Jazz vehicle with license plate DK 1624 AJ was usually used by her daughter-in-law Ni Putu Eti, 34.The theft of car tires and wheels was first known around 05:00 a.m., by her daughter-in-law. “At that time, my daughter-in-law was about to sweep. After that, she saw if the car had been dismantled by a thief. Four tires disappeared,” she said.

Since Friday night, Ni Putu Eti had suspected the condition of the car garage where the light in the garage went out. On the following day, when driving the car to take her child to a doctor around 8:00 p.m., she felt the car was rocking. But at that time, she had flat tire due to less air. “She felt to be dogged by anyone,” she said.

Finally, the light went out coincidently on Sunday morn-ing. Having been checked, the four car tires and wheels disappeared. Such incident was then reported to police. Im-mediately, police officers made examination at crime scene and asked for information to a number of residents. Alleg-edly, the culprit had planned its action. As proof, the culprit seemed to have used wooden block of approximately 20 cm to take the car tires and wheels, so as not to touch the floor of garage. (kmb16)

Amlapura (Bali Post)—

Two female tourists comprising a mother and her daughter ulti-mately died on Saturday dawn (Jan 4) around 01:15. Both victims were Australian, namely Mrs. Noelene Gaye Bischoff, 55, and her daugh-ter Yvana Jeana Yuri Bischoff, 14. Allegedly, both tourists died from abdominal pain accompanied with shortness of breath.

The two victims were staying in the room number 07 of Hotel

Beach Inn Resort at Padangbai, Karangasem. Both guests checked in at the hotel near Silayukti Temple on Friday (Jan 3).

Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Nyoman Arya Tatar, with permission from Chief of Karan-gasem Police, confirmed the case on the death of both tourists from Australia. As soon as receiving the report, police officers directly came down to crime scene for making an investigation. Body of the two victims was eventually sent

to Sanglah Hospital for autopsy. It was intended to determine the cause of death of the mother and her daughter occurred almost si-multaneously.

Allegedly, the death of the vic-tim was caused by illness with symptoms of abdominal pain and shortness of breath. After abdomi-nal pain and shortness of breath, the two victims apparently took drugs brought from their home country. Hotel security guard told the po-lice conducting the investigation at

the scene that on Saturday at 1:15 morning the victim Yvane knocked at the hotel office’s door to ask for help because her mother Noelene was sick.

Marketing staff of the hotel, Helena, helped and sent the victim Noelene to Penta Medika Clinic in Manggis. Unluckily, after getting a treatment for a while Noelene eventually died.

Shortly after that, the victim’s daughter Yvane also complained of pain with the same symptoms. Im-

mediately, the hotel sent the victim to clinic and ultimately to BIMC Kuta. But the victim also finally breathed her last. Body of the two victims was finally sent to mortuary installation of Sanglah Hospital for autopsy.

A few weeks ago, an Australian man was also found dead hanging himself in a hotel room at Candi-dasa where he was staying. The victim died to hang down by rop-ing his neck with a belt. Position of the victim was sitting down to knee. (013)

BEIJING - A Chinese tycoon said Monday he is serious about buying the New York Times and wants to work on “rebuilding its credibility and influence” by reforming its award-winning coverage of China.

Chen Guangbiao, listed as one of China’s 400 rich-est people and a man known as much for his publicity stunts as his charitable giving, penned an op-ed in the state-run Global Times newspaper headlined: “I intend to buy The New York Times, please don’t take it as a joke”.

“The tradition and style of The New York Times make it very difficult to have objective coverage of China,” Chen wrote.

“If we could purchase it, its tone might turn around. Therefore I have been involved in discussing acquisi-tion-related matters with like-minded investors.”

The New York Times has published several award-winning reports on China, including a 2012 investigation into the family wealth of then-premier Wen Jiabao that was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. The paper’s website has been blocked ever since in China, the world’s second-biggest economy, and several of its reporters have had difficulty obtaining visas.

Chinese state media and officials often interpret overseas criticism of the ruling Communist Party as an attack on the country itself. Chen added that if he succeeds he “will conduct some necessary reforms, the ultimate goal of which is to make the paper’s reports more authentic and objective, thus rebuilding its credibility and influence”.

Last Monday, Chen said at an event in the southern Chinese boom town of Shenzhen that he planned to travel to the US “to go discuss the acquisition” of the paper, a remark that many dismissed as the wealthy entrepreneur’s latest play for attention. Four days later, Chen was spotted by a Chinese Business News reporter at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. A New York Times spokeswoman told a reporter for the newspaper last week that the company had “no information” about any negotiations with Chen.

Chen built his fortune, estimated at five billion yuan ($825 million) by Chinese wealth publisher the Hurun Report, on the recycling company Huangpu Renewable Resources Utilisation Group. But he has been derided by critics as a publicity hound who will go to great lengths for attention.

In the past, he has sold “canned fresh air” to resi-dents of smog-ridden Beijing and also recently posed in front of a wall made out of thousands of “bricks” made of banknotes. In his op-ed, Chen wrote that he has “persuaded a Hong Kong entrepreneur to contrib-ute $600 million to this cause” of buying the paper, whose parent company is listed on Wall Street and has a market capitalisation of more than $2 billion.

“I have said as long as the price is reasonable, there is nothing that cannot be bought,” he wrote.

He added that he first had the idea of purchasing the newspaper when he placed an advertisement in it in December 2012 asserting Chinese sovereignty over a disputed island group called the Diaoyus by China and the Senkakus by Japan. “I find Americans know little about a civilised and open China that has been enjoying unprecedented development,” Chen wrote.

U.S. sales rose 8 percent to 15.6 million in 2013, thanks largely to a surge in pickup truck sales from the home construction and energy industries. For the 32nd year in a row, the Ford F-Series pickup was the country’s best-selling vehicle, with 763,402 sold. The Toyota Camry was the best-selling car with 404,484 sold.

But the industry got a taste of what’s to come when December sales slowed to a crawl. General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen all saw sales declines as competitors offered better deals, accord-ing to TrueCar.com, which tracks car prices. Cold weather and strong sales tied to Black Friday in November also pinched December sales, automakers said. Overall industry sales were flat compared with last December.

A slowdown is inevitable, analysts say. Many people who held on to their cars through the recession have now bought new ones. Those who haven’t may not be

in any rush, because cars are lasting lon-ger than ever before. And unless there’s a strong uptick in employment, families aren’t likely to buy an extra car.

Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, expects U.S. sales to increase by around 700,000 to 16.3 mil-lion in 2014. That compares to increases of more than 1 million each year since 2009, when U.S. sales bottomed out at 10.4 million. U.S. sales peaked at 17.3 million in 2000.

Gutierrez says sales are approaching a natural level of demand for a country with 210 million licensed drivers, especially since people are traveling fewer miles than they used to. Add to that increasingly competitive vehicles from all manufac-turers and you have a buyer’s market, particularly in popular and crowded segments like midsize cars.

Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of auto sales forecasting for LMC Automo-

tive, an industry consulting firm, expects annual auto sales to grow in the 1 to 2 percent range through 2015, when sales will plateau.

“We are in what we believe are the final stages of the recovery, which naturally leads to slower growth rates,” Schuster said.

So 2013 could be remembered as the last of the boom years. Last year was the industry’s best performance since 2007, when 16.1 million new cars and trucks were sold.

Ford led all major automakers in 2013 with an 11 percent sales gain to almost 2.5 million vehicles. Chrysler and Nissan posted 9 percent gains. GM, Toyota and Honda each posted 7 percent gains. GM sold 2.8 million cars and trucks in the U.S., compared to just over 2.2 million for Toyota. Hyundai’s sales rose 2.5 percent.

Among smaller automakers, Subaru was a star, with a 26-percent increase in sales. Only Volkswagen struggled, with sales falling 7 percent as its vehicles aged compared with rivals.

Luxury car sales had an especially strong year in 2013, with Mercedes set-ting a sales record to win the race against BMW and Toyota’s Lexus for the top-selling brand.

DETROIT — Automakers are going to have to work a little harder for your business in 2014. After four years of strong sales increases — and limited discounts — as the economy improved, U.S. demand for new cars and trucks is expected to slow this year. That could mean better deals for buyers as car companies fight to increase their share of the market.

SANGKARAGUNG village in Negara subdistrict is one of the vil-lages having a cag-cag weaving craft as typical product of the Buffalo Race Land. Virtually all the housewives at the hamlet of Sangkaragung have a cag-cag weaving skills inherited from generation to generation.

Some of them involve deeply in the profession through a group, while some others do it indepen-dently in their spare time beyond regular duties as a housewife. Amidst the condition where weav-

ing craft works are eroded by modern textile industry, every fam-ily at the village remains firmly to preserve the tradition. In the long run, the crafters are faced with a difficult situation where the price of weaving works tends to drop. They are unable to compete against the modern industry.

Formerly, the crafters could reap considerable income from the making of weaving works, but it now tends to decline continuously. It is caused by the price of cag-cag

weaving works are not comparable to the price of raw materials and production cost. “Currently, the price is indeed pretty good, at least for an additional side income,” said Ni Luh Wiarni, 41, one of the crafters from the hamlet of Pangkung Gondang.

The matter of expensive raw ma-terials thoroughly affected the craft-ers. Moreover, most of them were home-based artisans intending to support their domestic economies. In the past, the raw materials were cheap, while the weaving products

were expensive. Now, it happened on the contrary.

The crafters dominated by women in the neighborhood also took the job for economic interest. A number of artisans faced difficulty in marketing their products because their motive was different from the ones made by the weaving craft center such as at Dauhwaru. Their weaving products could only be used for sarong and could not be used to make apparel. Most of the cag-cag looms owned by housewives were heritages from

generation to generation.Other than weaving indepen-

dently, the village also had 11 groups of cag-cag weaving. Unlike the independent weavers, some groups obtained capital injections in the form of loans and yarns. One of them was the Menuh Group with 10 members entirely consisting of housewives. The group established in 2001 had represented Jembrana for several times in national and international competition and ex-hibition.

Chief of Karang customary village, Wayan Sukerta, said the Manca Gita Lestari gambuh troupe is old enough. Originally it was established by five hamlets, namely the Karang, Baledan, Kelodan, Per-ing and Tugu. The art troupe always involves local dancers from the five hamlets. Those designated as the gambuh dancers should have mar-ried. “It’s the way we preserve the traditional culture,” said Sukerta.

Gambuh is one of the dances made sacred because every piodalan or temple anniversary the dance was

involved to accompany the series of temple anniversary along with the Rejang Dewa and Rejang Renteng jointly. Though it was made sacred, Sukerta said it did not matter if the Gambuh Dance was shown in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). In the next Bali Arts Festival, for instance, the Gambuh Dance of the Karang customary village would also be presented. However, the attires in use would not be the ones that had been spiritually revivified (dipasupati).

For the performance of Gambuh

Dance, his party involved four flute artists, a tapper, two drummer, a gong player, four cymbal players and one penyandar as well as nine dancers. Gambuh Dance narrated two figures, namely Uriyodana and Panji, belonging to the malat story. Where, the malat story was the development of the Mahabharata and Ramayana epic featuring ‘bold’ characters. “Meanwhile, the malat story features two modest charac-ters,” he said while adding that all members of the Gambuh troupe were male.

In the past, he said, some of the dancers were women. However, the troupe found difficulty in its regen-eration and his party did not have fe-male dance instructor. The instruc-tor, said Sukerta, was selected by from generation to generation. The retired dancers were then appointed

instructors for the next regenera-tion. As an appreciation, those who were appointed the instructors got a dispensation from the customary village in the form of free obliga-tion from doing social devotional services or ayahan. “That is our trib-ute to the dancers and the Gambuh Dance troupe. They in person have preserved the culture, the wealth we have. Indeed, there are several other customary villages in Nusa Penida having Gambuh Dance, but they are no longer active,” he added.

For uniform, all the dancers involved put on cepuk fabric origi-nally made at Karang Village. For-merly, it was made by using cotton spun into yarn. However, due to difficulty in obtaining raw materials of cotton, the weaving artisans were forced to use the spun yarn brought in from outside Nusa Penida. He

admitted the fabric of original cot-ton yarn was much more durable than spun yarn. It was proved by the uniform of Gambuh Dance that was durable until today. It had been about 225 years old or in the fourth generation.

At Karang Village, about 75 percent of 168 families were active weavers, especially the housewives. Within 22 days, a crafter could com-plete 36-40 sheets of sarong with a price of IDR 135,000 each on the spot. In the market, it was sold for IDR 200,000. Thus, a weaver could earn IDR 600,000 per 22 days. In daily life, the weavers also took side job such as raising pigs and other livestock. “The weaving livelihood is also able to improve the welfare of local society, especially the poor. So far, there are about 90 poor fami-lies at the village,” said Sukerta.

KUDUS - Archaeologists found fossils of tusk, legs and ribs of a pre-historic elephant at the Patiayam Site in Jekulo Subdistrict, Kudus District, Central Java. Spokesperson of Fossil House of Patiayam Site Ari Mustaq-im stated recently that the fossilized tusk is 0.5 meter long while the ribs

are one meter long each. The fossils were found on Fri-

day (Dec. 27) and are now being excavated. The archaeologists of Patiayam Conservation Team have unearthed the fossilized ribs but failed to keep them intact; they need reconstruction after the excavation, Mustaqim explained.

The fossilized tusk has also been

unearthed and kept in one of the archaeologists’ homes in Terban Village, Jekulo Subdistrict, Kudus. The legs are still being excavated.

The Fossil House of Patiayam Site of Terban Village now has a collection of around 2,471 fossil fragments from 14 animals such as Stegodon trigonochepalus and Elephas sp. (both are prehistoric el-

ephants); Ceruss zwaani and Cervus lydekkeri martin (types of deer); and Rhinoceros sondaicus (rhino). The other collections include Brachyg-natus dubois (boar), Felis sp (tiger), Bos bubalus palaeokarabau (buf-falo), Bos Banteng alaeosondaicus and Crocodilus sp (Crocodile).

Some of the fossils were found by the residents of Terban Village.

The archaeologists of Yogyakarta Archaeology Office had also found three choppers, kind of cutting tools, estimated to be 750 thousand years old, during an excavation near Ter-ban Village in February 2012.

The Patiayam Site covers an area of 2,902 hectares in Mount Muria, Central Java. It has become a site of great fossil finds besides Sangiran.

The trophy arrived in Jakarta Monday as a part of its world tour.

Achmad Taufiq is one of several men to have gone on trial over the May plot, which came amid anger in Muslim-majority Indonesia at persecution of the stateless Rohing-ya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar.

Police foiled the plan the night before it was due to take place when they arrested Taufiq in Jakarta car-

rying a backpack full of homemade bombs while riding a motorbike with another militant.

The 22-year-old plotted with other militants and helped assemble the pipe-bombs, according to his indictment.

Handing down the guilty verdict and sentence Monday, presiding

judge Suprapto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told the South Jakarta District Court that Taufiq was part of “an evil conspiracy”.

“His actions disturbed the peace of the community and went against the government’s efforts to combat terrorism,” he added.

Taufiq shook his head and looked stressed as the verdict was read out. Prosecutors had recommended an eight-year sentence.

He was found guilty of possess-ing explosive materials, a charge

under tough anti-terror laws that can carry the death penalty in the most serious cases.

According to his indictment, he was part of an extremist group called Negara Islam Indonesia (the Islamic State of Indonesia).

Prosecutors said the planned at-tack was aimed at putting pressure on the government in Myanmar to do more to stop attacks on the Rohingya.

There have been a string of attacks on minority Muslims in Myanmar since 2012, mostly in

the Rohingya’s western home state of Rakhine. Hundreds have been killed and tens of thousands made homeless.

Sigit Indrajid, 23, confessed during his trial last month that he was the mastermind of the plot. He is due to be sentenced later this month.

Indonesia has been waging a campaign against Islamic extrem-ists over the past decade since a string of attacks on Western targets, and has succeeded in dismantling the most dangerous networks.

JAYAPURA - President Susilo Bambang Yud-hoyono will announce construction of the Holtekam bridge in the city of Jayapura, Papua.

Head of the Papua Public Works office Mi-chael Kambuaya said the president will also commission a number of other development projects especially in the public works sector in Papua.

“Currently we are listing projects to be com-missioned by the president. There are a number of roads newly completed in district areas in Papua and West Papua ,” Kambuaya said.

Construction of the Holtekam bridge that would link Jayapura and a number of outer regions in-cluding the border area with Papua New Guinea is estimated to cost Rp800 billion, he said.

The bridge project to be built with funds from the state budget and regional budget and to be completed in 2018, will span a distance of 600 meters in the sea.

JAKARTA - Court jailed an Islamic extremist for seven and a half years Monday over an “evil” plot to bomb the Myanmar embassy to avenge the killing of Rohingya Muslims.

For a big chunk of the Midwest, the subzero temperatures were moving in behind another winter wallop: more than a foot of snow and high winds that made traveling treacherous. Offi-cials closed schools in cities including Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee and warned residents to stay indoors and avoid the frigid cold altogether.

The forecast is extreme: 32 below zero in Fargo, N.D.; minus 21 in Madi-son, Wis.; and 15 below zero in Min-neapolis, Indianapolis and Chicago. Wind chills — what it feels like outside when high winds are factored into the temperature — could drop into the mi-nus 50s and 60s. “It’s just a dangerous cold,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Butch Dye in Missouri. It hasn’t been this cold for almost two decades in many parts of the country. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly at 15 to 30 below zero.

Lorna West, a 43-year-old student and consultant from Columbus, Ohio, said thermal underwear, lots of layers and “Eskimo coats” with zipped hoods to block the wind were the norm when she was growing up in Chicago. “And don’t go out if you don’t have to,” she said.

Elnur Toktombetov, a Chicago taxi

driver, woke up at 2:30 a.m. Monday anticipating a busy day. By 3:25 a.m. he was on the road, armed with hot tea and donuts, and an hour into his shift, his Toyota’s windows were still coated with ice on the inside. “People are re-ally not comfortable with this weather,” Toktombetov said. “They’re really happy to catch the cab. And I notice they really tip well.”

It was 5 degrees at kickoff Sunday inside sold-out Lambeau Field for a playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers, one of the coldest ever played. In the parking lot, Craig and Renee Heling of Waukesha, Wis., set up a camouflage hunting blind behind his white pickup truck and tailgated next to a propane heater. He wore four layers of clothing up top, two on his legs: “Two wool socks on — right now, I feel comfort-able,” he said.

“Well, my nose is about frozen. It feels like — I jumped in the lake the other day — it feels about like that,” his wife said with a laugh. She was completely dry, unlike New Year’s Day when she took part in a “polar plunge” into Lake Michigan. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard upgraded the city’s

travel emergency level to “red,” making it illegal for anyone to drive except for emergencies or seeking shelter. The last time the city issued such a travel warn-ing was during a blizzard in 1978.

For several Midwestern states, the bitter cold was adding to problems caused by a weekend snow storm. The National Weather Service said the snowfall at Chicago’s O’Hare In-ternational Airport totaled more than 11 inches as of 6 p.m. Sunday — the most since the Feb. 2, 2011, storm that shut down the city’s famed Lake Shore Drive.

Police in suburban Detroit said heavy snow was believed to have caused the roof to collapse at a two-story build-ing that once housed a bar. No injuries are reported and police said no one was inside the building in Lake Orion, Mich., about 7 p.m. Sunday when the roof collapsed. Missouri transportation officials said it was too cold for rock salt to be very effective, and several Illinois roadways were closed because of drifting snow.

A bus taking the Southern Illinois University men’s basketball team home from a game at Illinois State got stuck in the snow Sunday night off Interstate 57, forcing the group to wait for a tow truck and make plans for a night at a hotel in nearby Tuscola, Ill. More than 1,000 flights were canceled Sunday at airports throughout the Midwest including Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis.

BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has frac-tured her pelvis in a cross-country skiing accident and is walking with the help of crutches, forcing her to call off some foreign visits and official appointments, her spokesman said on Monday. Merkel fell while skiing over the Christmas vacation. What she first thought was heavy bruising turned out to be a partial fracture, meaning she must take it easy for three weeks and work from home where possible, said her spokesman Steffen Seibert.

The news comes a week after Germany was shocked by the far more serious skiing accident of former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, who is in critical condition in a French hospital.

“The chancellor is of course able to work and is in full communication,” said Seibert. He added that Merkel’s accident occurred “at low speed” but he declined to give further details. The 59-year-old chancellor, a keen hiker who has said she prefers cross-country to downhill skiing, has postponed a visit to Warsaw scheduled for Wednesday and a meeting in Berlin with Luxembourg’s new prime minister, Xavier Bettel.

But she will lead her first cabinet meeting of 2014 on Wednesday. Merkel began her third term last month after sealing a “grand coalition” of her conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD).

Merkel will not attend the World Economic Forum later this month but not because of her skiing accident, Seibert said, adding that the meeting in Davos at the end of January clashed with a scheduled German government meeting.

Beijing - Former basketball star Dennis Rodman headed to Pyongyang Monday with a group of former NBA players, saying he will not raise concerns about repression in North Korea because leader Kim Jong-Un is his friend and he loves him. The eccentric ex-Chicago Bulls player is leading a team including retired NBA All-Stars Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson and Vin Baker for an exhibition game against North Korea, which is being held Wednesday to mark Kim’s birthday.

Rodman told reporters at Beijing airport that he hoped the contest could “open the doors” to “talk about certain things”. “But I am not going to sit there and go ‘Hey guy, you are doing the wrong thing. That is not the right way to do it. He is my friend first... and I love him,” Rodman said, sprinkling his comments with expletives.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as it is of-ficially known, is a one-party Communist state which has been ruled by the Kim dynasty since its founding. The country has in the past been hit by famine, sometimes threatens war against South Korea and the US, and is regularly accused of human rights abuses.

The heavily tattooed Rodman has developed an unlikely relationship with the North Korean leader since making his first trip there in February, when he declared Kim a “friend for life”. Former NBA players Doug Christie, Craig Hodges and Charles D Smith are also in Rodman’s side for the ex-hibition game.

Five players were travelling with Rodman on his flight to Pyongyang Monday, while another will arrive on Tuesday, one of the trip’s organisers told AFP, without giving details.

Rodman, who once dated Madonna and was married to model and actress Carmen Electra, is known as much for his piercings, ever-changing hair colours and off-court antics as his court skills.

Miami’s Michael Beasley came off the bench to add 17 in a key contribution as the Heat came from five points down after three quarters. They went on a 7-0 run to open the fourth and never trailed thereafter. DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points on 11 for 19 shooting for Toronto, which had won its previous five games to open a four-game lead in the Atlantic Division.

Oklahoma City’s Reggie Jackson scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Thunder to a 119-96 victory over Boston. The Thunder started the season 13-0 at home but had lost three of four since. They were guided back to home advantage by Kevin Durant who added 21 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Jeff Green and Avery Bradley scored 19 points apiece for the Celtics who have lost seven of their past eight.

Indiana’s Roy Hibbert made a putback and two free throws in the final 1:09 to help the Pacers hold on for an 82-78 win over

Cleveland after seeing most of their seemingly comfortable lead evaporate.

Paul George scored 16 points for Indiana, which led an under-manned Cavaliers team by 16 in the fourth before Dion Waiters brought Cleveland back by scor-ing 12 points in a 16-1 run that got the Cavs within a point with 3:35 left. Hibbert’s free throw with 7.9 seconds left put the Pacers up 81-78, and Indiana got the ball back when Cleveland’s Earl Clark stepped out on an in-bounds pass 1 second later. Wait-ers scored 21 for the Cavaliers, who played without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.

Golden State’s Klay Thomp-son scored 26 points to lead the Warriors to a 112-96 win over Washington. Their nine-game winning streak is their longest within a single season since 1975. New York’s Carmelo An-thony scored 15 of his 19 points in the first quarter to jump-start the Knicks’ 92-80 victory over Dallas.

BRISBANE - Lleyton Hewitt will go into the Australian Open as the player the top seeds will hope to avoid in the first round, after digging into his famed store of resolve to beat Roger Federer in the Brisbane International final on Sunday. He-witt dominated Federer in the first set and then survived seven break points in the third to capture a morale-boosting 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory ahead of the first major.

“If I play like I did this week I have a chance of doing damage to some serious players,” the 32-year-old Hewitt told reporters. “It just gives me a lot more confidence go-ing out there believing in how well I’m hitting the ball at the moment and that I can match-up with the best guys. “Obviously it’s a differ-ent stage, winning three (sets) out of five against those guys (but) that’s why I still play the game.”

The 2005 Australian Open final-ist will move back into the world top 50 on the back of his success and could enter the Australian Open as his country’s number one player with Bernard Tomic defend-ing ranking points in the Sydney International this week.

The win made Hewitt reflect on his injury battles in recent years, having been forced to undergo

surgery on five occasions, most recently in February 2012, when he had a plate inserted into his toe in an attempt to extend his career. “I think the most pleasing thing is what I’ve had to come through and the tough times in terms of surgery,” Hewitt said. “Before the last surgery I made no secret. There were no guarantees I would be able to play again.

“There were still times when I came back from that surgery and played Wimbledon straight after it, I was still doubting whether I was ever going to be pain-free again. For me that’s the most pleasing thing.”

He has little chance of becom-ing the first home Australian Open winner since Mark Edmondson in 1976, but his form will surely lift the spirits of fans at Melbourne Park later this month.

“Our statistics are impressive and show that we fully deserve to be top of the table, clearing away any type of doubts,” Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said. “Today we won thanks to several incidents which we made the most of. While they were in the game, Roma showed they are a team to be feared, they are not second by chance. Roma impressed me for the first hour.” Juventus was in complete control following goals from Arturo Vidal and Leonardo Bonucci but Roma was still fighting to get back in the game.

However, Daniele De Rossi was sent off for a brutal tackle on Giorgio Chiel-lini and Leandro Castan was also shown a straight red card two minutes later after he handled on the goalline. Mirko Vucinic fired home the resulting penalty against his former club.

“We had so much possession but we weren’t efficient up front,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. “For me that’s the problem. We didn’t have many chances but Buffon had a good first half, but they didn’t have many chances either. “We have to be stronger in the future to be able to win these matches, but the title race isn’t over, it hasn’t ended here, there are still 60 points at stake. We have to get back to winning as soon as possible. Our aim is to return to Europe, we are second so we are in the right spot.”

Earlier, Fiorentina beat Livorno 1-0 in the Tuscan derby and Cagliari drew 0-0 at Chievo Verona as Serie A resumed follow-

ing a winter break. There was bad news for Fiorentina as star striker Giuseppe Rossi was injured again. Rossi, who is the top scorer in Serie A, limped off in the second period with what appeared to be a knee injury. The United States-born player has only recently recovered from two years of injuries and several surgeries.

Juventus was boosted by the return of key playmaker Andrea Pirlo from a five-week injury layoff, but it was Roma which started the brighter and Gianluigi Buffon had to rush out smartly to close down Adem Ljajic after six minutes.

Roma had more possession and several half chances but Juventus looked dangerous on the counter — cheered on vociferously by the home fans — and took the lead in the 17th minute with its first real opportunity. Carlos Tevez spun and threaded the ball through for Vidal to beat the offside trap and slot into the back of the net.

Juventus almost doubled its lead shortly before halftime when Tevez rolled a tantaliz-ing ball across the face of goal but no one could get on the end of it for the tap-in.

The home side did score again immedi-ately after the break when Bonucci was left unmarked at the far post and the Juventus de-fender slid in to turn home a Pirlo free kick. There was bad news for Juventus as Tevez went off injured on the hour mark. Roma’s hopes of a comeback diminished following De Rossi’s moment of madness and all but evaporated when Castan followed him.

MANCHESTER, England — Man-chester United and West Ham paid a big price for fielding heavily weakened teams in the FA Cup when they were knocked out in the third round on Sunday, while Chelsea and Liverpool advanced relatively comfortably. Swansea capital-ized on the 80th-minute sending-off of substitute Fabio Da Silva by scoring in the last minute through Wilfried Bony in a 2-1 win at United, the latest setback for David Moyes in his turbulent first season with the English champions.

United has lost four of its last six games at Old Trafford in all competitions and failed to reach the fourth round for only the second time in 30 years. “We had another big game in 48 hours’ time so we have to keep that in mind (but) no

excuse,” said Moyes, referring to the first leg of a League Cup semifinal against Sunderland on Tuesday. “We had a strong team out. Nearly every player out there was an international.”

Like United, West Ham used a lineup full of reserves ahead of its League Cup semifinal against Manchester City on Wednesday, and the gamble backfired. The injury-hit Premier League struggler was crushed 5-0 at second-tier Nottingham Forest in the third round’s biggest shock.

“We had a huge amount of problems in terms of the available members of the squad so I’ve got to keep them intact, that’s a major priority,” said West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who was already under pressure with his team next to last in the league. “Many, many managers have changed the team in all divisions, but my changes had to be severe. I didn’t

want it to be but it had to be.”Chelsea and Liverpool played stronger

lineups — and it showed. Second-half goals by John Obi Mikel and Oscar earned Chelsea a 2-0 victory at Derby, while Liverpool avenged last season’s surprise defeat to third-tier Oldham in this competition by winning 2-0 at Anfield thanks to Iago Aspas’ first goal for the club and an own goal by James Tarkowski.

That game also saw Liverpool man-ager Brendan Rodgers go up against his own son, Anton, who plays for Oldham and came on as a second-half substitute. “I’ve seen Anton’s life from when he was a young footballer and to see him run out there was a bit surreal really,” Rodgers said. Sunderland beat third-tier Carlisle 3-1 in the other third-round match featur-ing a Premier League team.

Malaysian second tier club Kedah have denied that their controversial logo change from green and yellow to red came as a caveat to a two mil-lion ringgit ($608,600) investment by Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan. The logo switch is similar to what Malaysian businessman Tan employed at English Premier League Cardiff, who now play in red despite protests by supporters of the Welsh side who are known as the Bluebirds.

The Bernama news agency said on Sunday the logo change had angered fans of the three-times Malaysian champions, but the club’s honorary secretary Aminuddin Omar rejected the suggestion they had their hand forced. “We did not change the logo or colour according to our own taste or fancy but it was part of a transformation that KFA will be undergoing for the development of football in the state,” Aminuddin was quoted as saying by Bernama.

The old logo was the brainchild of former man-ager Ahmad Basri Mohd Akil, who led the club to a number of honours. Tan had not interfered in the running of the team since his investment on Aug. 15, the report quoted Aminuddin as saying, adding that the change of logo had been approved by the Sultan of Kedah.

Malaysia’s ninth-richest person with a net worth of $1.3 billion and the former chairman of conglomerate Berjaya Group, Tan left school at 16 to start a career as a bank clerk, before purchasing Malaysia’s first McDonald’s franchise and then buying the country’s main lottery agency.

Tan, routinely mocked by British media for his running of the Welsh club, incensed Cardiff fans last month by sacking popular manager Malky MacKay, who returned them to the top flight of English football this season for the first time since 1962. Undeterred by accusations that he knows little about soccer, Tan added to his football portfolio last month by agreeing a deal to take over the control and management of Bosnian club Sarajevo.

MILAN — Serie A leader Juventus remained on course for a third straight title with a 3-0 victory over second-placed Roma, which was forced to play with nine men for the final 13 minutes on Sunday. It was a 10th successive win for Antonio Conte’s team and saw it extend its lead at the top of the table to eight points at the halfway stage of the season. It was Roma’s first loss of the season.

(kmb27)

The project works after the fire incident seeming to have been carried out carelessly is criticized again by the Bangli House.

The festival is celebrat-

ing its 25th year but it’s only relatively

recently become a star-studded s top on the awards circuit.

sionately about artist activism and the fight against AIDS.

Officials said the flight to the wealthy mountain refuge originated in Mexico and all three aboard were pilots and Mexican men.

Alex Burchetta, director of operations for the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, identified the man who died as Sergio Carranza Bra-bata of Mexico. He did not release the names of the two injured, and he did not know where in Mexico the 54-year-old Brabata lived.

Burchetta said the plane went off the right side of the runway, flipped over and burst into flames.

“The injuries were traumatic in

nature, but they were not thermal,” he said. “So the fire never reached inside the cabin as far as we can tell.”

Ginny Dyche, a spokeswoman for Aspen Valley Hospital, said the facility received two patients who were involved in the crash. She later said one patient in fair condition and another in critical condition were transferred elsewhere.

Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, confirmed the plane was a Canadair CL-600, a midsized pri-vate jet. The aircraft is registered to the Bank of Utah in Salt Lake City,

according to Federal Aviation Ad-ministration records. Bank officials did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.

Allen Kenitzer, an FAA spokes-man, said the plane was headed from Tucson, Ariz., and crashed upon landing. Officials said the crash hap-pened at 12:22 p.m. MST.

A plane with the same tail num-ber took off at 6 a.m. MST from the airport in Toluca, a city 35 miles west of Mexico City, before stopping in Tucson, according to a Mexican federal official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The official said the passengers aboard were three Mexican men. He declined to release their names,

officials didn’t immediately have more information. Attempts by The Associated Press to reach airport officials in Colorado were not im-mediately successful.

Aspen attracts celebrities and the wealthy for its skiing and all around ambiance from around the U.S. and the world. The region’s popularity has left its airport often dealing with numerous private aircraft.

At least two celebrities at the airport Sunday reported they were witnesses. The crash prompted Twitter responses from the two, who confirmed to The Associated Press that they sent the tweets.

Country singer LeAnn Rimes Cibrian tweeted via @leannrimes on Sunday: “So sad! Horrible plane

crash we just saw happen at the Aspen airport.”

Comedian Kevin Nealon sent a series of tweets about the crash through @kevin_nealon.

His first one said, “Horrible plane crash here at Aspen airport. Exploded into flames as it was landing. I think it was a private jet.” Later he tweeted, “Airport is closed now. I think I’ll drive back to LA after seeing that.”

Tom Renwick, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Junction, said snow showers were reported in the area Sunday afternoon, but not at the airport. He said it has been overcast all day with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Aspen is located in the Rocky Mountains about 100 miles southwest of Denver.
