LONDON — More than 1,000 boats were to sail down the Thames on Sunday for a flotilla tribute to Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, in what organizers are calling the biggest gathering on the river for 350 years.

Despite cool, damp weather, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the riverbanks, feting the British monarch whose

longevity has given her the status of the nation’s favorite grand-mother.

The four-day celebrations also include street parties and a Monday pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney — though not everyone in Britain will be celebrating. The anti-monarchist group Republic plans a riverbank protest as the flotilla goes by on Sunday, followed by a

pub night where royal refuseniks can drown their sorrows.

The celebration kicked off Sat-urday with a royal day at the races, as the queen watched a horse with the courtly name of Camelot win the Epsom. Diamond Jubilee festivities officially began with a 41-gun salute fired by the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery at Horse Guards Parade in central London.

The 86-year-old monarch and

her husband, Prince Philip, vis-ited Epsom racecourse south of the capital for the Derby, one of the year’s biggest horse-racing meetings. The queen waved to the 130,000-strong crowd as she was driven down the racecourse in a Bentley bearing the Royal Standard — the car’s sun roof kept shut under gray skies — before settling down to watch the races from the royal box.

Japanese market previously occupied the second position after Australia, but it tended to

continuously decline after tsunami disaster. Even, until April 2012 the arrival of Japanese tourist

occupied the fourth position after Malaysia with the tourist visit reaching 12,735 people. Mean-while, the first position was still occupied by Australia with the arrival of 59,951 people.

The Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, IB Kade Sub-hiksu, also said the Island of the Gods was the only destination in the Asian region selected as the

best destination in the 1st Global Tourism Thermal List—the Most Preferred Tourist Attraction for Chinese in 2011. The assessment was based on a poll organized by ‘Beijing People’s Broadcast-ing Station’ since 25 April 2011, determining 10 favorite destina-tions from the 68 existing nomi-nations.

DENPASAR — Chinese tourist visit to Bali continues to show off a positive number. Based on the data of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the arrival of tourists from the Ginseng Country replaced the position of Japan amounting to 20,369 people from the total amount reaching 225,488 people.

A young ‘knight’ on horseback from St George’s Church joins the parade through the town of Chichester, England, as part of the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The fast starting Repsol Honda rider threaded his way through from the sec-ond row to lead into turn one. Lorenzo’s team-mate Ben Spies then briefly passed Pedrosa, only to run wide and fall after clipping the grass.

Lorenzo made no such mistake when he outbraked Pedrosa into turn one on lap 4 of 25, but Pedrosa - seeking his first win - stuck with Lorenzo and slipstreamed back ahead just before the

halfway stage.Pedrosa then looked to be handed a

golden chance to claim his first win of the year when Lorenzo bobbled under braking and lost one-second to the RCV rider.

But Lorenzo, using the softer rear tyre, was able to reel Pedrosa (on the harder rear) back in and made a victory pass when Pedrosa became unsettled by a wheelie on the back straight with six laps to go.

A delighted Andrea Dovizioso took his first podium as a Yamaha rider with a confident third place for the Monster Tech 3 team. The Italian occupied the position for much of the race - then held off a charging Casey Stoner on the final lap.

Perhaps due to the cooler conditions, pole sitter and reigning champion Stoner was unable to run at the front and spent much of the race fending of Dovizioso’s team-mate Cal Crutchlow, before his late burst.

Stoner is now 20 points from Lorenzo after missing the podium for the first time since Jerez 2011.

Jorge Lorenzo has extended his advantage at the head of the MotoGP World Championship standings with victory in front of his home fans at Catalunya. The Factory Yamaha star won his third race from five starts after a near race-long duel with fellow home hero Dani Pedrosa.

Iannone takes first Moto2 win of 2012

Speed Up Moto2 rider Andrea

Iannone of Italy celebrates his victory of the

Catalunya Mo-toGP Grand Prix

in Montmelo, near Barcelona,

June 3, 2012.

ANDREA Iannone claimed his first Moto2 victory of the year with an excel-lent ride under heavy pressure at Catalu-nya, while Marc Marquez and erstwhile championship leader Pol Espargaro clashed in controversial manner three laps from the end.

Marquez and Espargaro had been two of the primary reasons Iannone could not be assured of victory despite lead-ing for the majority of the race. Along with Thomas Luthi, the lead quartet was rarely separated by more than six tenths of a second.

While the lead occasionally changed hands at the first turn, the crucial moment of the race came three laps from the finish

when Luthi (Paddock Suter) dived down the inside of Marquez at Turn 10.

Marquez (Monlau Suter) lost the front of his bike but was able to rescue the situ-ation almost instantly, although he lost second and surrendered ground.

That invited his title rival Espargaro (Pons Kalex) to dive down the inside, but as Marquez pulled back onto line the pair touched. Espargaro crashed out, suf-fering a heavy high-side into the gravel, while Marquez was able to continue.

In contrast to his controversial move on Luthi at Qatar, Marquez seemed to know little about where Espargaro was, although race control is reviewing the incident.

The battle for the lead was still on, but Iannone managed to resist a final lap dive from Luthi to seal a first win of the year for his Speed Master Speed Up squad. Luthi does however have the comfort of now leading the championship, two points ahead of Marquez.

It was similarly frantic behind the lead four, with a multitude of riders involved in the fight for fifth - which became fourth following Espargaro’s crash.

Esteve Rabat (Pons Kalex) eventually claimed the position ahead of Simone Corsi (Ioda FTR) and Takaaki Nakagami (Italtrans Kalex), although Toni Elias (Aspar Suter) was also involved until he crashed out seven laps from the end.

After seeing his team’s 15-point lead dwindle to four, Du-rant took over midway through the fourth quarter by scoring all 16 of the Thunder’s points during a span of just over 5 minutes to keep the Spurs at bay. “I didn’t tell myself that I need to go score because what we were doing was working,” Durant said.

“We were passing the ball and guys were making shots. ... I just wanted to stick with what we were doing, but it started to open up for me and I could see some lanes that gave me some opportunities to make some shots.” With All-Star teammate Russell Westbrook limited to seven points, Durant did almost all of the damage late to send the series back to San Antonio all square for Game 5

on Monday night.Durant, who finished behind

only LeBron James in MVP voting, hit three straight jump-ers, the last one coming after he bumped into Tony Parker in the lane to draw a foul and set up a three-point play. Then he attacked the rim for his next three baskets, getting to the line again when he was fouled on a layup off of James Harden’s alley-oop.

Durant hit another jumper after coming off a Westbrook screen for the last basket in his personal run — and the Spurs were still within striking dis-tance. Rookie Kawhi Leonard bracketed a pair of 3-pointers around that Durant jumper, and the Spurs were only down 102-96 with 1:24 left.

The Spurs succeeded in get-

ting the ball out of Durant’s hands on the next possession, only for him to provide the as-sist on Harden’s 3-pointer from the left wing that bumped the lead to nine. “When a player that talented gets hot, it’s really hard to contain,” San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili said. “We tried different things and they didn’t work. “He scored a bunch in a short period of time. When we tried to blitz or really help, he kicked it and they made big shots.”

Durant hit two free throws in the final minute to help close it out. “We tried to do a couple of different things but his play was better than any-thing we did defensively, that’s for sure,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He finished it off in fine fashion.”

PARIS - Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki’s slide continued on Saturday when she was dumped out of the French Open third round by Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, losing her temper in the pro-cess. The Dane, seeded ninth, slumped to a 6-1 6-7 6-3 defeat after a controversial line call went against her at 1-1 in the deciding set after she had battled back into the match.

Wozniacki, who finished each of the last two seasons on top of the rankings despite not having captured a grand slam title, had a heated debate with chair umpire Poncho Ayala. “When the ball is clearly out I don’t think there should be anything to argue about,” she told reporters. “If they cannot see, they should have other umpires on the lines or invent Hawk-Eye on these courts.

“It’s a disgrace mistakes like this are made. It wasn’t even like it could have been in, could have been out. It was clearly out,” said Wozniacki. “When a ball travels five miles an hour in the third set at 1-1 I think either the linesman or the main umpire should be able to see the ball.” Wozniacki won six titles in each of the 2010 and 2011 seasons but has yet to get off the mark this year.

She recently began working with new coach Thomas Johansson to halt the decline and still believes she can salvage the year. “I can’t really be happy about losing today but it’s sport and, at least looking ahead, you have big tournaments coming up, Wimbledon and the Olympics, U.S. Open, so there is still plenty to look forward to,” the 21-year-old said. “I just have to stay positive and in tennis there is always next week. So that’s the good thing.”

OKLAHOMA CITY — When Lil Wayne turned down Kevin Durant’s invitation to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, he missed quite a show by the three-time scoring champion. Durant scored 18 of his 36 points in a scintillat-ing final 7 minutes, Serge Ibaka added a career-high 26 points and the Thunder evened the series at two games apiece by beating the San Antonio Spurs 109-103 Saturday night.

Michael Phelps, swimming his last warm-up meet before the US Olympic trials, won the 400 meter medley as club-mate Allison Schmitt stole the show at the Longhorn Elite Invitational. Phelps won the medley in 4:15.88, almost a second ahead of Chase Kalisz, another of his North Balti-more Aquatics team-mates.

Schmitt, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, set a US Open and pool record with a time of 1:55.04 in the 200m free, eight-hundredths outside the American record she set in Rome in 2009.

It was the second-fastest time in the world this year. “I feel like I have been on schedule this year, but there’s no way I expected to swim this fast at this meet,” Schmitt said. “I felt good coming in here, and I just gave it all I had. After this race, I know there’s a little more in the tank.”

The 400m medley figured among Phelps’s eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, and he vowed then he wouldn’t swim the demanding event in top international competition again.

However, he has raced it several times this season, sparking speculation he could tackle it in London. Phelps has yet to reveal just what events he wants to swim in his final Olympics. “We have a plan in place, and we will be ready,” Phelps’s coach Bob Bowman said.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Eka Sukmaningsih, a baby from

Busungbiu, Singaraja, suffering from hydrocephalus and having had a VP-Shunt operation in Sanglah Hospital some time ago breathed her last on Saturday night (Jun 2). The daughter of the couple Komang Surdiasa, 28, and Kadek Rediasih, 20, passed away while she was under treatment in Buleleng Hospital.

According to Surdiasa, condition

of Eka worsened and her conscious-ness declined since Friday (Jun 1). “We had brought her to Sanglah Hospital. After getting medical treat-ment, the doctor said if she was okay, so that we finally took her home,” he said. However, since her condi-tion continued to turn critical and unconscious, Sudiarsa with his wife without a second thought brought her back to Singaraja Hospital. Unfor-tunately, Eka could not survive and

finally died. Komang was deeply sad because

he lost out his little daughter. Long struggle that he and his wife passed through was not in accordance with the destiny of the God. “Yes, I have let her go sincerely because she could not last any longer. We strive to accept this reality whole-heartedly,” he said. The family was going to immediately conduct a funeral for Eka. (san)

It is very worrying that bird flu have reached here for sure. One owner, Dewa Komang Suarsana, last Saturday (2/6) stated around 25 of his chickens died not only the hens but also some of the chicks and no symptoms were shown before their

death. It seemed in a day a seriously dead virus attacking the chickens in the area. It was expected one of them died at night time while staying on a durian tree branch in his house area as in the morning it was found dead then the others followed dying.

Receiving that report, bird flu man-agement from Animal Husbandry Agency then went to location and took a number of samples for rapid test. It was stated the causer wasn’t the AI negative or bird flu, instead it was tetelo or grubug. (kmb26)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Price of various commodi-

ties in the city of Denpasar in general shows a decrease. Based on the data of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of last May 2012, Den-pasar experienced a deflation of 0.05 percent. This develop-ment was in contrast to the national rate where the infla-tion reached 0.07 percent.

The Head of BPS Bali, Gde Suarsa, said that some commodities experiencing the price decline during May 2012 were like cayenne pep-per, garlic, tuna and bricks. Meanwhile, the commodities living through an increase, among other things, were the air transport, house rents, papaya, snapper, sugar and chicken flesh.

“This deflation rate hap-pened due to decrease in the price showed by the index decrease in the group of goods and services, where the highest occurred in foodstuffs which reached 0.89 percent. Then, it was followed by clothing group reaching 0.16 percent as well as education, recreation and sports reach-ing 0.08 percent,” said Gde Suarsa in Denpasar, Friday (Jun 1).

He said the increase in index happened to the group of processed food, c iga-rettes and tobacco reaching 0.50 percent. Then, group of transport, communica-tions and financial services increased (0.39 percent) , while housing, water, elec-tricity, gas, and fuel (0.06 percent).

“Besides, there was also a group of health sector as much as 0.03 percent. How-ever, if they are sorted from highest deflation, Denpasar ranked 26th of the 29 cities that experienced deflation in May,” he said.

Gde Suarsa mentioned that after the issue of fuel price

hike last April, the price of goods in general had begun to normal. Many traders had been adjusting back the goods they sold. “In April, the prices of goods were still high. But, based on observation in May 2012, the prices of goods in the market have been back to normal,” he said.

Suarsa added the rate of inflation based on calendar year of January-May 2012 amounted to 2.21 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of infla-tion based on year on year, in May 2012 against May 2011 amounted to 4.74 percent.

In the meantime, Rec-tor of the Undiknas Uni-versity, Prof. Dr. Gede Sri Darma, assessed the rate of deflation would accelerate the economic growth and the higher purchasing power of the community would lead to the improvement of public welfare.

Deflation happening in Denpasar, said Sri Darma, also closely related to the slowing down global econom-ic condition and the impact of crisis in Europe. “The growth of global economy is slow, while the economy of Indo-nesia, especially Bali, grows higher resulting in deflation,” he said.

According to him, such condition was a moment to carry out re-denomination to the currency. In a stable or better economic condi-tion, corrective action for the designation of currency (not value of the currency) was required considering the designation of the Indonesian currency was too much.

“If the designation of ru-piah is simplified, like IDR 1,000 to IDR 1, for instance, so that USD 1 will be equiva-lent to IDR 9. This will show to the world that Indonesia’s economy will be determining in the future (5 best country in Asia),” he said. (kmb27)

LONDON - England are hopeful defenders Gary Cahill and John Terry will be fit for Euro 2012 despite both suffering inju-ries in their final warm-up match against Belgium, the FA’s Trevor Brooking said on Sunday.

Central defender Cahill went off with a suspected broken jaw in Saturday’s match at Wembley but Brooking, the director of football development, told BBC radio that the initial signs were promising.

“Gary was certainly the initial main concern last night, so he went for a scan. At the moment the feedback is that we are hop-ing it’s not cracked,” he said. “I’m sure they will have a second look but at present we are hoping that’s going to be OK.”

Terry, Cahill’s Chelsea team mate, had complained of a tight hamstring muscle in the 1-0 win that brought him a 73rd cap.

“John Terry had a hamstring issue which will be scanned this morning. The medical staff are hopeful that it’s not bad enough for him not to be able to stay in the squad,” said former England midfielder Brooking.

“At the moment we are still hoping that the 23 (squad mem-bers) might stay intact.” England play France in their opening Group D Euro 2012 match in Donetsk, Ukraine, on June 11.

Manager Roy Hodgson has already lost experienced key midfielders Frank Lampard, winner of 90 caps, and Gareth Barry, 53 caps, as well as reserve goalkeeper John Ruddy from the original squad through injury.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police

led by its Chief Unit, M. Arif Sugiarto, could reveal the case of car tire puncture that occurred during this time. Two suspects consisting of Muhammad Abdul Musori, 20, and Muhammad Dul, 35, were arrested in their respective boarding house on Wednesday (May 29). Based on confession of the suspects, they were specifically targeting cars of foreigners. Even, since eight months ago, both suspect admitted to have acted at 10 crime scenes.

Chief Arif Sugiarto, Friday (Jun 1) explained the 10 crime scenes becoming the targets of the two suspects spread in several areas. For examples, they had acted for 3 times in Ubud, Gianyar, 2 times in Tabanan as well as 3 times in Badung and Denpasar. However, it was only confession of the suspects themselves. Meanwhile, for more details, the investigators were still developing the case. “Since we found the evidence of their crimes at crime scenes in North Kuta area, so the case will be handed over to the local police authority,” he explained.

According to the former Chief of Kuta Police, the arrest of both suspects was based on the results of investigation made by his personnel in the field. The investigation referred to a case of tire puncture. Having performed investigation for several days, police ultimately could get the suspects’ name. At first, police arrested the suspect Abdul Musori from

Lumajang, East Java, around 11:00 a.m. local time. The arrest was made in his boarding house on Jalan Kertapura, West Denpasar. Further, around 20:00 p.m., it was the turn of Muhammad Dul from Kayu Agung, South Sumatra, to be arrested. Arrest of the suspect was carried out in his boarding house on Jalan Pidada, West Denpasar.

From the arrest of both suspects, police seized the evidences in the form of umbrella nail to puncture the car tires, pliers, sandals to place nails and some other equipment. Other than such tools, police also secured the other evidences in the form of valuables as the results of their crimes. Among others, there were cameras, Blackberry Bellagio and tote bags. As the results of investigation, in fact those items belonged to Lina Monica Meyer, a Swiss citizen, whose car tire was punctured in front of Toko Biru at Kerobokan.

Chief Arif also explained that the mode used by the culprits was as usual. The umbrella nail was plugged into a slipper and put under the car tire when it stopped. They respectively played different role, where Musori served as a jockey, while the suspect Dul served as executor. “After putting the nail, the culprit did a reconnaissance. If the car had moved, they would follow the car until the victim realized that its car tire deflated. Then, when the victim changed the tire, both suspects opened the car door and looted the properties of victim,” he described. (kmb21)

The medical services were coordi-nated by the Bali Post Media Group with the involvement of hospitals or clinics. On Friday (Jun 1), a number of temple priests and devotees looked to come in droves and utilized the free medical services in the form of general health check-up and dental services.

According to the coordinator of the physician team, Putu Sunadiati, the medical team involved last Sat-urday included the elements of Kuta Community Health Center II, North Kuta Community Health Center, Badung Hospital, Petang Commu-nity Health Center I and II, Mengwi Community Health Center III, Sari Dharma Hospital and Bhakti Rahayu Hospital. A total of 35 personnel were involved in the medical team.

Positive benefits of the free medi-cal services could be thoroughly felt by the community. For example, during the examination most temple priests complained about fatigue or rheumatic disease. “Understandably, most of them have been old enough,” she said. As the party involved in the social activities, Sunadiati admitted to be very happy because she could par-ticipate in the devotional services or

ngayah for the health of devotees who came to say prayers in the Penataran Ped Temple. “The activities are very positive and have many benefits. We do hope this activity can be continued and further enhanced in the future,” she said.

Jero Mangku Darma, a temple priest in the Penataran Ped highly appreciated the social activities. According to him, the activities belonged to devotional work. With the health service, the temple priests in particular and devotees in general would be greatly assisted. Moreover, the series of ceremony remained to last so that the priests needed a prime physical condition.

Meanwhile, based on observation of Bali Post in the temple consisting of the Segara, Taman, Ratu Gede, as well as the Penataran Agung Temple, the entire worship took place sol-emnly. The devotees who came to worship could follow the ritual procession orderly. For informa-tion, the series of temple anniver-sary, inauguration and revivifica-tion of purana or history of the Penataran Ped Temple would come to an end on Soma Wage Dukut or Monday (Jun 4). Edo Agustian Suartana alias Edo (22) from Grokgak, Buleleng and Nugroho Priambodo alias Babidi or Adi (20) from Wongsorejo, Banyuwangi, East Java, now stayed at Denpasar Police as they were proved to have robbed Coco Mart Jimbaran located at Batur Raya Street, Perum Taman Griya last Monday (14/5) which they man-aged to take IDR 47 million and have been spent. Haed of Denpasar Police Criminal Research, PC Arif Sugiarto last Friday (1/6) explained the two have been jailed and evi-dences of what they have bought are confiscated. “One accused, Edo, is a worker at the mart,” Sugiarto stated.

They were captured separately where Edo got caught first at By Pass Nusa Dua Street behind War-ung Kampung last Tuesday (29/5) while the next day Babidi was captured at his flat at Suwung Batan

Kendal Street, Gang Mahabrata, South Denpasar. The two were captured based on the CCTV that caught them. The crime was planned six days before after Edo was placed there for six days. In there, Edo took a duplicate key from its saved place before replaced again. To do his action, he asked accused Babidi to help him with the reason he’s go-ing to marry his girlfriend and his mother is ill. They then took action on 14th May 2012 at 12.30 am local time by driving a Mio Motorcycle DK 7458 UI. One accused went in from the back door while the other went in as a buyer so the worker won’t go to the back. Babidi went in to the second floor where the money was saved. After the money was taken, the two escaped and in the road they threw the key around Suwung which then they went to Babidi’s living place and divided the money. Babidi received more as the executor and the two spent it also for daily needs. (kmb21)

Mubarak, the only autocrat toppled in the Arab Spring to be put in the dock, could have been sent to the gallows as demanded by the prosecution. Both the toppled dictator’s defence team and lawyers representing his victims said the verdict could easily be appealed.

The verdict prompted outrage inside and outside the courtroom, with protesters staging rallies in Cairo, Alexandria and other Egyp-tian cities.

“Either we get justice for our martyrs or we die like them!” chanted those gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s presi-dential candidate Mohammed Mursi said the revolution must continue.

“All of us, my brothers, must realise in this period that the con-tinuation of the revolution, and the revolutionaries’ staying put in their positions in the squares, is the only guarantee to achieve the goals,” he

told reporters.Judge Ahmed Refaat sentenced

Mubarak, 84, and his interior minister Habib al-Adly to life for their role in the deaths of more than 800 protesters during the revolt that ousted them, but acquitted the six security command-ers on the same charges.

A senior member of Mubarak’s defence team told AFP the former strongman will appeal.

A tearful Mubarak, who enjoyed near absolute power for three de-cades, was flown to Tora prison on Cairo’s outskirts after the verdict but then refused to leave the aircraft.

A security official said Mubarak “suffered from a surprise health crisis” but was finally convinced to return to his cell.

Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he will reshuffle his cabi-net on Monday in an attempt to se-cure opposition support for passing legislation to increase a tax on sales. Defence Minister Naoki Tanaka and Transport, Land and Infrastructure Minister Takeshi Maeda are widely expected to lose their jobs.

The leading opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has called for both to be dismissed after they were censured by the upper house in April for a series of gaffes and for trying to influence a local election respectively.

Farm Minister Michihiko Kano may also be replaced due to his alleged role in passing classified documents to a repatriated Chinese diplomat, whom police suspect of having engaged in spying activities, local media said.

The prime minister told report-ers Sunday about his plan for a cabinet reshuffle after failing to convince Ichiro Ozawa, leader of the largest intraparty group of Noda’s Democratic Party, of his

plan to hike the sales tax.“I told (Ozawa) that I will re-

shuffle the cabinet tomorrow,” he said.

Noda met Ozawa on Sunday, for the second time in a week, to enlist support in enacting the tax bill during the current parliamen-tary session.

But Ozawa, who has said eco-nomic growth should come before a tax hike, later told reporters he was “opposed to” Noda’s position, making it inevitable the premier will turn to the leading opposition for support.

Noda has already told the sec-retary-general of his ruling Demo-cratic Party of Japan to coordinate with the LDP so that the tax bill will be presented to a lower house vote before the session ends on June 21, local media reported.

By passing the bill, Noda hopes to increase the current five percent sales tax rate in two stages -- to eight percent in April 2014 and to 10 percent in October 2015 -- to rein in the public debt of the rapidly ageing nation.

After recalculating data from last year, the nation’s climatologists are declaring that Oklahoma suffered through the hottest summer ever recorded in the U.S. last year — not Texas as initially announced last fall. “It doesn’t make me feel any better,” joked Texas rancher Debbie Davis, who lives northwest of San Antonio.

In the new tally by the National Cli-matic Data Center, Oklahoma’s aver-age temperature last summer was 86.9

degrees, while Texas finished with 86.7 degrees. The previous record for the hottest summer was 85.2 degrees set in 1934 — in Oklahoma.

“I’m from Oklahoma, and when you talk about the summer of 1934, there are a lot of connotations that go with that,” said Deke Arndt, chief of the NCDC’s climate monitoring branch in Asheville, N.C. “That whole climate episode — the Dust Bowl — that is a point in our state’s

history that we still look back to as transformative.” Yet the summer of 2011, “was warmer than all those summers that they experienced dur-ing the Dust Bowl,” Arndt said.

The record swap became appar-ent after extra data trickled in from weather stations and meteorological field reports across both states. That data also pushed up Oklahoma’s mark as the hottest month ever by two-tenths of a degree, to 89.3 degrees in July 2011. Oklahoma had experienced unusually dry, hot weather in the winter and spring, then summer brought regular triple-digit temperatures that fueled wildfires, prompted burn bans and led to water rationing in some communities.

A drug that is already approved for prostate cancer has been shown to slow the spread of advanced forms of the disease for the first time, according to research released Saturday. Zytiga, made by Johnson and Johnson, is be-ing tested in a randomized phase III trial involving 1,088 men with prostate cancer at 151 cancer facilities in North America, Europe and Australia.

On average, participants in the study were diagnosed five years prior to entering the research but none had begun chemotherapy. Their cancer had metastasized and had become resistant to initial hormone therapy, but they were not showing major symptoms.

According to interim results, the drug, abiraterone acetate, given in combination with prednisone, de-layed the onset of pain and helped improve quality of life in patients

whose cancer had metastasized. In the Zytiga group, patients’ can-

cer did not worsen for 16 months, compared to 8.3 months in the group that did not get the drug, Ryan said. More analysis is needed to determine survival time. The full data set is expected in 2014.

“This drug extended lives and gave patients more time when they weren’t experiencing significant pain from the disease,” said Charles Ryan, an associate professor of clinical medi-cine at the University of California San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“It appears that this medication may lay a foundation for the use of this drug at an earlier stage of prostate cancer, and its benefits may be able to be delivered to a much wider population of patients as a result.” The research was to be released at the 48th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

LOS ANGELES — Is the Wii U right for you? At last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Nintendo captured most of the spotlight by unveiling the Wii’s successor, a high-definition console called the Wii U that utilizes a tablet-like touchscreen controller. Attention alone wasn’t enough to declare a victory. Folks weren’t, well, feeling it. Critical re-action was mixed, and the Japanese gaming giant’s stock dropped.

“Nintendo has an uphill battle this year,” said Morgan Webb, co-host of the G4 gaming show “X-Play.” ‘’It’s really a branding problem. I think a lot of people are still confused about the Wii U. They’re going to have a hard time convincing people that this could be a better gaming experience

than the iPad.”At this year’s E3 convention in

Los Angeles next week, Nintendo Co. will attempt to assuage such concerns by introducing gamers to titles that will be available for Wii U when it’s expected to launch later this year. Previously, the “Mario Bros.” creator only teased what was capable through a series of technol-ogy demonstrations.

E3 comes at a time when the gaming industry could use a few good parties and pep talks. The NPD Group, a research firm that tracks the U.S. sales of game soft-ware, hardware and accessories, said that while consumers spent more than $1 billion on games and accompanying gizmos in April, re-tail sales fell 32 percent from a year ago, the fifth month of decline.

The continued interest in cheap-er-to-produce mobile, social and downloadable games is expected to be showcased more than ever before at E3, a flashy extravaganza typically focused on building buzz for the loudest and sexiest games. Zynga, the developer of social games like “FarmVille” and “Words With Friends,” will have a presence at E3 for the first time.

“Every time I go to E3, I’m usu-ally surprised,” said Jay Wilson, lead designer of the role-playing game “Diablo III.” ‘’I expect to be surprised again. What I hope is that no matter what platform people are working on, no matter what new area that they’re exploring, the most important thing is gameplay. If a game provides great gameplay, the platform doesn’t really matter.”

DUBAI - Iran’s most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Sunday accused the United States and its allies of talking about the threat of a nuclear Iran to cover up their own problems, state television reported.

“What Americans and Westerners do is idiotic. They magnify the nuclear issue to cover up their own prob-lems,” Khamenei said in a televised address marking

the 23rd anniversary of the death of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

“Iran’s nuclear issue has been put at the top of world developments and they are deceitfully using the term nuclear weapons ... to divert attention from the problems inside America and Europe.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Filmmaker George Lucas on Friday named veteran producer Kathleen Ken-nedy as his co-chair and successor at the iconic film studio he founded four decades ago. Kennedy and Lucas will serve as board co-chairs at Lucasfilm Ltd. as the “Star Wars” creator moves forward with his retirement plans.

Lucas, 68, will continue as CEO and work with Kennedy as she transitions into her new role at Lucasfilm, the San Francisco-based company said. The legendary filmmaker said he chose Kennedy as his successor because he was looking for “someone with great creative passion and proven leadership abilities, but also someone who loves movies.”

“I’ve spent my life building Lucasfilm, and as I shift my focus into other directions, I wanted to make sure it was in the hands of someone equipped to carry my vision into the future,” Lucas said in a statement. In recent months, Lucas has told reporters he plans to move away from producing big-budget movies so he can focus on smaller, art-house films.

Kennedy will step down from her role at The Kennedy/Marshall Co. and shift responsibilities to her partner Frank Marshall. Together they have produced Academy Award-nominated films such as “War Horse,” ‘’The Adventures of Tintin,” ‘’The Sixth Sense” and “Sea Biscuit.”

Over the past three decades, Kennedy has worked with Steven Spielberg to produce blockbuster films such as “E.T.,” ‘’Schindler’s List,” and the “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” franchises. Kennedy, 58, said she feels fortunate that Lucas will work with her for the “next year or two” as she moves

into her new job.“It is nice to have Yoda by your side,” Kennedy

said in a statement. “George and I have talked about the enormous opportunities that lie ahead for the company, and as George moves towards retirement I am honored that he trusts me with taking care of the beloved film franchises.”

An interview with Strayed will air July 22 on OWN’s “Super Soul Sunday” and on Oprah Radio. Readers will be able to share opinions through Facebook and Twitter and Winfrey’s website, www.oprah.com.

“This is way different from the old book club,” Winfrey said in an online video announcement, taped in her Chi-cago office and posted Friday on her website. “This time it’s an interactive, online club for our digital world.”

The new club will test whether Winfrey still has clout with the reading public, especially when her viewership is far smaller than years ago. Starting in the mid-1990s, Winfrey made hits out of dozens of books through her previ-

ous club, featured on her syndicated talk show. But sales had fallen by the time her show ended, in 2011. One of her last picks, a combined volume of Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” and “Great Expectations,” was in part a victim of the e-book market as many readers simply downloaded free, public-domain versions of the novels.

The initial response to Friday’s an-nouncement was slow compared to Win-frey’s peak, when her choices topped best-seller charts within hours of her revealing them. As of Friday night, “Wild,” had received a mild bump on Amazon.com’s list, from No. 175 before Winfrey’s pick to No. 97. “Wild” ranked No. 244 late Friday on the Kindle e-book charts.

Their task, he has said, is to correct mistakes made during their 53 years of leadership, which will require “days and years of work” that he intends to finish.

“The generation that made the (Cuban) revolution has had the historic privilege, few times seen, of being able to direct the rectifi-cation of errors they themselves committed,” he told a Commu-nist Party conference in January. “Despite the fact that we are not so young, we don’t plan to waste this last opportunity.”

Raul Castro’s No. 2, Jose Ra-mon Machado Ventura is 81 and his No. 3, Ramiro Valdes is 80.

Older brother Fidel Castro, who led Cuba for 49 years before age and infirmity forced him to leave office, is 85 and still a behind-the-scenes player.

The average life expectancy for a Cuban male is about 76 years.

President Castro has said his health is good and he feels young, plus there is a history of longevity in his family. His sister Angela died in February at the age of 88 and his eldest brother Ramon is 87.

If he is worried about time, Raul Castro does not let on pub-licly.

He has fretted publicly about not having groomed younger leaders to succeed the current group, but there are no obvious candidates waiting the wings.

He has said on several occa-sions that the remaking of Cuba’s economy will be done “without hurry, but without pause” so that the mistakes of the past are not compounded by more mistakes.

SPEEDIER REFORMSMany people think he needs

to move faster, regardless of his age.

Since officially succeeding older brother Fidel Castro in 2008, he has launched reforms to encour-age private initiative and reduce the role of the state, which controls 90 percent of the economy.

He has put more agriculture in private hands, opened the doors for small private businesses and begun giving state companies more autonomy. He wants to cut a million jobs, or about 20 per-

But there are questions about whether President Castro is doing enough to modernize the strug-gling Soviet-style economy and accomplish his goal of saving the communist system put in place after the 1959 revolution.

The Communist Party af-firmed at a congress in 2011 that central economic planning would continue and the accumulation of property not allowed.

Many people think Cuba needs to open up its economy in the style of fellow communist-led countries China and Vietnam.

“The challenge for Raul Cas-tro and the leadership of the Communist Party continues to be the orderly implementation of a transition to a mixed economy and a society open and integrated to the world,” said Cuba expert Arturo Lopez-Levy at the Uni-versity of Denver.

CAM RANH BAY, Vietnam — U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has arrived at a former U.S. air and naval base at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, becoming the most senior American official to go there since the war ended.

Panetta says he hopes to encourage efforts with Vietnam to locate and identify more of the U.S. war dead who are still missing.

He plans to visit the USNS Richard E. Byrd, a cargo ship operated by the Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The ship has a largely civil-ian crew and is used to move military supplies to U.S. forces around the world.

The U.S. military’s Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command has six recovery teams and two investigative teams in Vietnam searching for troop remains. There are about 1,200 unaccounted for service members believed to be in Vietnam.

SHANGHAI - Weak manufacturing activity in China and dismal growth data from India have underscored Asia’s vulnerability to the European turmoil and sparked fresh calls for government intervention.

Asia was long considered a global bright spot, even a haven from Europe’s deepening crisis and the weak US recovery. But the continent is starting to feel the heat as overseas markets deteriorate.

World Trade Organization chief Pascal Lamy said on Thursday that the region was increas-ingly “interconnected with the rest of the planet and I don’t think this relative immunity will be forever”.

“I would expect, given what is happening in other parts of the world economy, this region to be more affected than it has been so far,” he said.

Lamy’s fears were borne out within hours as the disappointing data stoked calls for China’s and India’s governments to kick-start their economies to escape hard landings, which could worsen the already fragile global outlook.

“China’s economic slowdown is more severe than expected. Export orders are continuing to fall, which is definitely related to Europe’s debt crisis,” said Liao Qun, chief economist for Citic Bank International in Hong Kong.

“Uncertainty in Europe is high. China

needs to move faster and more aggressively to speed up loosening of its monetary and fiscal policies.”

China’s official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for manufacturing indicated a sharper-than-expected slowdown in May, while separate PMI data released by British bank HSBC showed a contraction for the same month.

China has already cut bank reserve require-ments three times since December as exports -- a key engine of growth -- have stumbled, causing economic growth to weaken to its slowest pace in three years for the first quarter.

There are signs that Beijing is ramping up spending with infrastructure projects, but of-ficials and state media have ruled out a massive stimulus plan like a four-trillion-yuan ($635-billion) spending spree in 2008.

Meanwhile, India’s economy grew at a nine-year low of 5.3 percent in the first quarter, data showed Thursday, as the global downturn hit the emerging market giant.

The unexpectedly grim figure was well below analysts’ forecasts for 6.1 percent growth and coincided with China’s bleak data, dimming hopes that emerging countries will power the global economy back to health.

Elsewhere, South Korea’s exports -- an indi-cator for the region -- declined year-on-year for a third straight month in May as the eurozone turbulence and China’s slowdown took their toll on the economy, figures showed Friday.

The review, which should take a few months, will complement an ongoing exercise to stress test Spain’s banking sector by consultors Oliver Wyman and Roland Berger, whose first results are expected around mid-June.

“I can confirm (the names),” the source said.

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday said his government would have a clear view of how much money will be needed to recapitalize troubled lenders by the end of June.

He also said the government would make clear by then how it intends to inject the money.

Economy Minister Luis De Guindos said earlier this week that Spain would likely go to the markets to find the 19 billion euros ($23.5 billion) nation-alized lender Bankia (MCE:BKIA.MC - News) said it would need to be

cleaned up but investors are doubtful it can manage to prop up the entire sector without outside help.

Senior EU officials have said pri-vately that the country should instead seek a loan from the European bailout fund but that would necessarily come with tough conditions and a high political cost Rajoy is not willing to assume.

The European Stability Mechanism (ESM), due to enter into force on July 1st, has the capacity to lend money to banks but the request has to be made by the state, which receives the money and then transfers it to the lenders.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has so far opposed calls from other Eu-ropean leaders, including from Rajoy or France’s President Francois Hollande, to change the rules and allow direct recapitalizations of the banks.

DETROIT — Easier credit, hot new cars and falling gas prices kept Ameri-cans buying cars at a solid pace in May despite bad economic news.

But sales could stumble in June as people weigh troubling headlines, like Friday’s report that U.S. unemployment rose for the first time in 11 months.

Car sales usually hew closely to the performance of the stock market and to consumer confidence numbers. But in May, they were strong, even though con-fidence was wobbly and the stock market had its worst month in two years.

“We should have had a disastrous new vehicle sales month, but consumers are still interested in the new products,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intelligence for the car buy-ing site TrueCar.com. “This was an anomaly.”

Toprak expects sales to slow some-what this summer before picking up again at the end of the year as the economy improves and the presidential election ends political uncertainty.

May sales totaled 1.3 million cars and trucks, up 26 percent from the same month a year earlier. It was the best May for the industry since 2008.

Toyota led sales increases with an 87

percent rise from a year earlier, while Honda saw a 48-percent jump. In May 2011, both companies ran short of cars and trucks after the earthquake in Ja-pan crippled their factories. But their showrooms are full again, and they’re rapidly gaining back the market share that they lost to competitors such as Hyundai and GM.

Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid tripled from a year ago, while Honda Civic sales were up 80 percent.

Chrysler reported a 30 percent increase, followed by Volkswagen at 28 percent and Nissan at 21 percent. Ford and Hyundai both saw gains of 13 percent. General Motors Co. was up 11 percent.

Pickup truck sales were particu-larly strong last month. GM, Ford and Chrysler all reported sales rose more than 20 percent.

Ford says demand for trucks has followed an increase in new home construction since the start of this year. Also, many truck owners would rather buy a new, more fuel efficient truck than repair an aging one, said Ford’s U.S. sales chief Ken Czubay. Eighteen percent of trucks traded in for new Fords are more than 10 years old now, he said, up from 13 to 14 percent a year earlier.

“Based on the national target of 510,000 people, up to May Bali has just achieved 72,000. The existing potential is still widely open. By all means, the supporting infrastructure should continuously be improved to achieve the target,” he said.

He said that characteristics of Chinese market were differ-ent from the other markets such as Taiwanese. Moreover, those living in metropolis like Beijing ordinarily had similar character-istics to Japanese tourists which could speak English. “It is differ-ent from Taiwanese tourists who generally did not speak English,” he said.

As explained, most Chinese tourists liked adventure tourism such as cruise or rafting. They did not really like to be taken to do shopping. Except, the craft products were truly unique. They were very concerned about qual-ity because they had a plenty of

choices of products in their home country.

Growing interests in Chinese society to travel out of the country were affected by the affordable price of tour packages due to the growing economy. Besides, it was also triggered by the local government policy that allowed its citizens to take outbound travel.

“The trend of traveling abroad among the people of China, espe-cially in urban areas, has become a part of new lifestyle with the purpose of taking holiday and recreation,” he said.

For information, in 2011 Bali had won 11 awards. Dressed in a royal blue coat and matching hat over a blue-and-white floral dress, the queen was accompanied by members of the royal family including her sons Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

The royals were treated to an aerial display by members of the British Army’s Red Devils parachute team before the main event — the racing.

The monarch is a racing fan and horse breeder who has at-tended the Derby for decades and reads the Racing Post each day over breakfast, although unlike many of her subjects she does not gamble.

The queen presented prizes

to some of the race winners and spoke intently to jockeys and trainers.

“She’s incredibly knowledge-able. Her knowledge of thor-oughbreds and breeding goes way back,” said Anthony Cane, chairman of Epsom Downs Race-course.

The queen took the throne in 1952 on the death of her fa-ther, King George VI, and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Jubilee events end Tuesday with a religious service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, a carriage procession through the streets of London and the queen’s appear-ance with her children, grandchil-dren and great-grandchildren on the palace balcony.

The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhab-ited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century.

It is famous for the Pura Pancer-ing Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There

are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mys-terious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim.

The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting

to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency.

Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, al-though strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas.

The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed

scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words.

The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cem-etery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption.

Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion...

You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

JAKARTA - Indonesia said inflation eased to 4.45 percent in May thanks to falling basic food prices during harvest season, as analysts said the central bank’s policy of holding interest rates was working.

The consumer price index (CPI) came in at 4.45 percent last month,

lower than the 4.5 percent in April, the Central Statistics Agency said.

The cost of chillies, a main in-gredient in local dishes, fell about 60 percent while the price of staple rice also came down.

The May CPI fell 0.07 percent on-month compared with a 0.21 percent rise in April.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food prices, was 4.14 per-

cent year-on-year in May, from 4.24 percent the previous month.

“The central bank will likely maintain the interest rate in its next meeting,” said Wilson Sofan, an analyst with Reliance Securities in Jakarta.

Bank Indonesia, the country’s central bank, has left its bench-mark interest rate unchanged at a record low of 5.75 percent since

February.“This is a clear indication that

there is some truth to the authori-ties’ view that inflation pressures remain under control at this stage,” said Gundy Cahyadi, an analyst at OCBC Bank.

OCBC forecasts inflation at six percent this year, while the government target remains 5.3 percent. Concerns over infla-

tion have been heightened by a government plan to restrict fuel subsidies.

President Susilo Bambang Yud-hoyono said Tuesday the govern-ment was looking to restrict the use of subsidised fuel in a bid to shield the state from surging costs after it failed to pass a price hike through parliament in March amid mass protests over inflation.

Indonesia, the main provider of domestic workers for Malaysia, announced last December it would lift the ban after the two countries agreed to better protect maids, in-cluding allowing them one day off per week.

The ban was imposed by Jakarta in June 2009 after numerous abuse cases and has been a sore point in relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

A Malaysian labour recruitment official said while the number that

arrived four days ago was small, it was “better than nothing.”

“We managed to bring only 29 maids as many had backed out because of the bureaucracy in the Indonesian recruitment system,” Jeffrey Foo, president of the Ma-laysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies was quoted as saying by the New Sunday Times newspaper.

But Suryana Sastradiredja, a social and cultural affairs official at the Indonesian embassy in Kuala

Lumpur, said he had no idea why the turnout had been so low but indicated that it could be due to fear of abuse.

“Perhaps the salary is too low, or after hearing of abuse cases, they backed out. I do not know the real reason behind this,” he said.

It was reported earlier that up to 5,000 maids would arrive monthly after the ban was lifted.

Indonesian maids receive about 600 ringgit ($188) a month but often work from sunrise to

sundown daily. They attend to the elderly, children and cook meals.

Before the ban was enforced some 300,000 Indonesian women worked in Malaysian households. The ban led to a shortage of maids that affected the daily routine of many working Malaysian par-ents.

Cambodia also imposed a ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia last October following numerous abuse complaints.

BANDA ACEH - Three critically-endangered Sumatran elephants have been found dead in an oil palm plantation in western Indonesia and are believed to have been poisoned, an NGO said Saturday.

Villagers found the dead animals on Thursday in a govern-ment-owned oil palm plantation in the eastern part of Aceh province. They were estimated to be four and five years old, local environmental group Fakta said.

“We suspected that they died after consuming bars of soap laced with poison we found near the carcass,” the group’s chief Rabono Wiranata told AFP.

“It seems that the elephants have died around one week,” he said.

The animals are usually either killed by villagers, who regard the beasts as pests that destroy their plantations, or by poachers for their tusks.

Early last month, two other Sumatran elephants were found dead in the west of the province.

There are fewer than 3,000 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild, according to the International Union for Con-servation of Nature, marking a 50 percent drop in numbers since 1985.

WWF changed the Sumatran elephant’s status from “en-dangered” to “critically endangered” in January, largely due to severe habitat loss driven by oil palm and paper planta-tions. Conflicts between humans and animals are increas-ing as people encroach on wildlife habitats in Indonesia, an archipelago with some of the world’s largest remaining tropical forests.

DENPASAR - A British drug suspect who could face death under Indonesia’s stiff anti-nar-cotics laws is undergoing treat-ment for mental illness, the head of the police hospital on Bali said Saturday.

Rachel Dougall, who was ar-rested at a luxurious villa last week on the holiday island, is suspected of being a member of a drug ring comprising four Britons and one Indian national.

“She suffered acute psycho-somatic illness due to a drastic change of life, from being a free person to becoming a prisoner,” police hospital chief doctor Is Arifin told AFP, adding that she was admitted on Friday morn-ing.

Bali narcotics police uncov-ered the group after the separate arrest of another British woman, Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, al-legedly in possession of almost five kilograms (11 pounds) of cocaine after arriving at Bali’s Denpasar airport from Bangkok.

According to Bob, the produc-tion of coal in Indonesia has de-veloped rapidly since 1980’s. The growth reaches 5.5% a year and the production is 380 million tons. He added that the current production of Indonesia surpass Australia which grow 12% with the production around 135 million tons.

Bob also said that currently, the world is haunted by the energy cri-sis. The effects of the crisis which increase the price of oil in the world make the government having dif-ficulties in fulfilling the need of domestic oil.

Bob said that one of the ways to prevent the lack of oil is to convert the use of oil for industrial to coal. Based on the survey of the energy in Indonesia, fossil base fuel still dominates. The use of fossil fuel reaches 93% from the total energy used in Indonesia which consists of 47% of oil, 21% gas and 25% coal. In the composition, the use of coal can be increased to reduce the use of oil.

Bob explained that in order to play important role in the national and world energy development, an event entitled the 18th “Annual Coaltrans Asia” will be held in Bali International Convention Centre, Nusa Dua, Bali from Monday, June 3 through Thursday, June 6.

The event will be officially opened by Indonesian Energy and Resources Minister Jero Wacik as well as become the keynote speaker in the annual event at-tended by key players in the world’s mining industry, started from the producers, distributors, and customers.

Bob said that the Coaltrans Conference is held to share the latest information of the world’s coal industry which focus on the development and market condition of world market especially China, India, and US. The event also be-comes the meeting point of all coal businessmen in the world.

In the fluctuation of oil price, the conversion of oil by industrial to coal is considered as one of the alternative. Currently, the na-tional coal production reaches 380 million tons and the growth is 5.5% a year. It was stated by the Head of Indonesian Coal Mining Association, Bob Kamandanu on Saturday, June 2, 2012.

policy. The government policy to urge the investment increase reaches its peak in 2012. For that reason, this year, the Coaltrans Asia Forum will focusing in discussing the challenge for Indonesian coal producer to increase the investment which is integrated with mining in the country.

“Investment is the main attention of the coal buyer from Indonesia where they often questioned the supply in the developing demand on coal,” he said.

According to Bob, Indonesia needs to compare with the clos-est competitor which is Australia that also has large amount of coal. Australia applied carbon tax to every export. “Indonesian Government need to hear the opinion of the key players in the mining industry and take part in the discussion that explain the future strategy of each compa-nies,” he added.

Indonesian Energy and Re-sources Minister Jero Wacik stated that coal is very impor-

tant in the future. He explained that the current use of energy in Indonesia is still dominated by fossil based energy. “The com-position of energy in Indonesia is still dominated by fossil energy. Currently, fossil energy reaches 93% from the total energy used in Indonesia which consists of 47% of oil, 21% gas and 25% coal,” the Minister said.

The Minster also said that In-donesia has develop plan to melt the coal and add it to the energy portfolio. The coal melting and

gasification of coal will increase the use of coal nationally. The process of coal melting will use Low-Rank Coal (LRC) which is abundant in Indonesia.

The development and the use of clean coal technology includ-ing the gasification of coal, the melting and the upgrade of brown coal (UBC) will make the clean and environmentally friendly industry. “By using the latest technology and good mining practice, I believe that we can create great number of

product and I am also sure that industry can respond the increase of demand in the future and open and investment opportunity,” the Minister said.

He said that the annual Coal-trans Asia which will be filled with speaker from the government office and companies and private businessmen is also providing the space for 100 participants. The Minister hope that the event can give positive recommendation for the development of coal industry in Indonesia. (kmb18)

He wants to cut a million jobs, or about 20 per-

cent of the workforce, from the government’s payrolls.

He has allowed Cubans to buy and sell cars and homes, privileges denied to them for five decades.

One of them was chosen as the best tourist destination in Asia-Pacific re-gion in 2010 by the magazine Business Travelers Asia-Pacific based in Hong Kong, where about 196,925 people of 50 mil-lion of Chinese tourists travel-ing abroad chosen Bali as their destination.

The hosts started ag-gressively, p r e s s e d high up the pi tch and seemed to be in con-trol of the

Bulut added salt to Portu-gal’s wounds by drilling in the second goal in the 52nd minute after taking advantage of a careless ball from Miguel Veloso.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –Two accused named Komang

(kmb21)

(kmb27)

Chinese tourists take over Japanese position Bali Post
