The company’s chief creative officer and writer of the relaunched “Green Lantern” series dreamed up Simon Baz, DC’s most prominent Arab-American superhero and the first to wear a Green Lantern ring. The character and creator share Lebanese ancestry and hail from the Detroit area, which boasts one of the largest and oldest Arab communities in the United States.

“I thought a lot about it — I thought back to what was familiar to me,” Johns, 39, told The Associated Press by phone last week from Los Angeles, where he now lives. “This is such a personal story.”

Baz’s story begins in a standalone “zero issue” available Wednesday that’s part of a companywide effort to fill in the gaps or tell the origins of a character or

team. Johns has no plans for Baz to fade into the background — the character in February is bound for the Justice League of America, one of DC’s premier super team books, to fight alongside Green Ar-row, Catwoman and Hawkman.

Johns said he took economic as well as ethnic cues for the character from his native Detroit area, with Baz resorting to stealing cars after being laid off from his automotive engineering job. He steals the wrong car, which inadvertently steers him into a terrorism probe and, eventually, an unexpected call to join the universe’s galactic police force.

The olive-skinned, burly Baz hails from Dearborn, the hometown of Henry Ford and the capital of Arab America. His story begins at 10 years old, when he and the rest of his Muslim family watch

their television in horror as airplanes fly into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Events unfold from there as U.S. Arabs and Muslims find themselves falling under intense suspicion and os-tracism in the days, months and years following the attacks.

“Obviously, it’s affecting everybody,” said Johns, who grew up in nearby sub-urbs in a Lebanese Christian household and got into comics when he discovered his uncle’s old collection in his Arabic grandmother’s attic. “One of the things I really wanted to show was its effect on Simon and his family in a very negative way.”

WASHINGTON — Presi-dent Barack Obama says he’s a “huge Clint Eastwood fan,” even in the aftermath of the actor’s rambling “invisible Obama” monologue at the GOP convention.

Obama says in an inter-view with USA Today released Sunday the Academy Award-winning Eastwood is “a great actor, and an even better direc-tor.” But Obama was coy when asked if he was offended by the performance.

Eastwood talked with an imaginary Obama in an empty chair before Mitt Romney’s speech at the GOP convention, saying the president has failed to deliver on his promises.

Obama says, quote, “if you’re easily offended, you should probably choose an-other profession.”

The president joked on Twit-ter after Eastwood’s appear-ance, tweeting that “this seat’s taken,” along with a photo of him in his chair at a Cabinet meeting.

“The arrival of foreign tourists in July 2011 reached 283,524 people. While the arr ivals in the same period of 2012 reached 271,371 people, down 4.24 percent. It hap-pened because their destination changed over or they delayed their holiday travel,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Gde Suarsa, in Denpasar, Monday (Sep 3).

It was said the tourism markets showing a decrease in July 2012 consisted of Australia at minus 11.53 percent, France (-1.80 percent), Ma-laysia (-9.31 percent), UK (-1.79 per-cent), South Korea (-6.90 percent), the Netherlands (-6.87 percent), and Taiwan (-30.36 percent). The decrease in the number of tourism markets was covered up by a num-ber of countries whose tourist visit increased such as China rising by 9.40 percent, Japan (3.32 percent), and Germany (12.44 percent). “So far, Australia and China remain rank first in the top ten of Bali tourism market,” he said.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Starting from Ragunan Zoo, Indonesia Miniature Park (TMII), Ancol Recreational Park, Safari Wildlife Park, Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple up to Ratuboko Temple showed an increase in visi-tors. Total visitors at those tourist attractions from August 19 (2 days before the Eid) to August 26, 2012 (seven days after the Eid) reached 2,268,289 people, an increase of 25 percent over the year 2011 only reaching 1,817,243 people.

Such encouraging increase, said Mari, indicated that domestic market was still growing well despite the slowdown in the world economy. Increased purchasing power that enable the public to enjoy a holiday in tourist attrac-tions could also be interpreted as an increase in happiness of the people of Indonesia during the Eid holiday. “The increase in domestic tourists can also offset the decline in the growth of foreign tourist visits,” said the Mari.

The increase in visitors, espe-cially domestic tourists during the holiday feast, played an important role in order the target for domestic tourists this year of totally 245 mil-lion trips and expenditure of IDR 171.5 billion could be achieved. In terms of expenditures, the potential of domestic tourists contributed

more than double the foreign ex-change revenue of foreign tourists. For example, last year’s revenue of foreign tourists reached USD 8.5 billion, or around IDR 80 tril-lion, while the total expenditure of domestic tourists was IDR156.89 trillion.

In connection with the for-eign tourist visit, Mari said, when compared to July of last year, the number of tourist visit in July 2012 decreased by 5.94 percent from 745,451 people to 701,200 people. Despite the decline in July, foreign tourists visiting to Indonesia was still growing by 5.4 percent from January to July 2012 compared to last year and the number reached 4,577,510 people. “In the world’s economic slowdown, the growth is still relatively good,” she said.

Mari remained optimistic if the target of 8 million foreign tourists this year could be achieved. Citing the UNWTO, Mari estimated that during the period from May to Au-gust there were about 415 million people traveling around the world. “Despite a decrease happened in July, hopefully in August and fol-lowing months it will rise again not just in the number but also in the quality of tourists measured by the length of stay and the amount of expenditure,” she explained. Gianyar (Bali Post)—The fire afflicting the 12 models

of traditional house in Taman Nusa attraction project at Belahpane hamlet, Sidan village, Gianyar, caused the inauguration plan of the attraction to be delayed. Public and Gianyar Government have been waiting for the operation of Taman Nusa that will become the devel-opment of tourism pie in Eastern Gianyar.

On Monday (Sep 3), the Head of Gianyar Tourism Agency, AA Bagus Ari Brahmanta, said that as per initial plan the Taman Nusa attraction would be operated this year. Licensing requirements of the Taman Nusa project had been com-plete. In addition, the management had also got in touch with us and would ask the regent to inaugurate

the tourist attraction coinciding with the International Tourism Day on September 27, 2012.

However, the fire accident hap-pening a few days ago threatened to delay the inauguration of the tourist attraction. Except, the miniatures of traditional house of some regions in Indonesia could be quickly rebuilt, so that the inauguration would not be delayed, he explained.

Against the disaster, the project owner of Taman Nusa from Riau fully handed over the fire case to police department. Police would investigate to find out the cause of fire. Investor stated to local government if the Taman Nusa attraction project could have been completed would absorb at least 300 employees. The Taman Nusa attraction was built on a land area of

approximately 15 hectares, right on Melangit riverbank. The new tourist area in Gianyar was currently un-der construction and the miniature of the Indonesia Miniature Park. Various pavilions in traditional architecture were adapted to each ethnic group and the auditorium could be used for performance of traditional arts such as theater and dance, he said.

Meanwhile, police department handling the fire case in the Nusa park project had not indicated any results. The Forensic Laboratory Team of Bali Police investigating the fire case had not published the results yet, explained the Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Gianyar Police, Nengah Sadiarta, with per-mission from the Chief of Gianyar Police. A truckload of new TVs, with screen resolutions four times great-er than so-called full HD screens, are being unveiled at this week’s IFA technology show in Berlin. The screens -- referred to as 4K or ul-tradefinition -- were among dozens of new gadgets on display for the 250,000 people who descended on Berlin’s conference halls.

The show features gear ranging from big-screen smartphones to self-stirring cookware, but the big buzz this year is about 4K. The first sets should be available for preorder this fall. There were still plenty of 3D screens, including a 103-inch Panasonic set that doesn’t require viewers to wear 3D glasses. The excitement over them, however, seems to be dying down.

The new 4K sets from LG, Pana-sonic, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba show a level of detail you’d expect on a movie screen; their resolution equals that of professional cinema

cameras, like the Red One. The detail is stunning, and viewers can comfort-ably sit close to the screen. Even from only a few inches away, it’s impos-sible to discern a single pixel.

Sony claims that chips in its flagship set can scour normal Blu-ray films and display extra details, producing pictures far sharper than what normal sets can offer. In dem-onstrations, films looked stunning on the new screens.

Not to be outdone, Panasonic teamed up with Japanese broad-caster NHK to create an 8K set -- with resolution four times greater than its rivals’ and 16 times greater than Full HD.

There is just one problem, of course: storage. There is no media suitable for storing 4K films just yet. Normal Blu-ray discs aren’t designed for the new format. In Berlin, most tech companies dem-onstrated their sets with slow-motion landscape videos.

A Dutch company that aims to land humans on Mars in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent Red Planet colony has received its first funding from sponsors, officials announced this week.

Mars One plans to fund most of its ambitious activities via a global reality-TV media event, which will follow the mission from the selec-tion of astronauts through their first years on the Red Planet. But the sponsorship money is important, helping the company — which had been self-funded for the last 18 months — get to that point, officials said Wednesday (Aug. 29).

Russia on Monday unveiled a series of graphic images, includ-ing of a gangrenous foot and a still-born baby, that will be printed on cigarette packs as the country tries to trim its sky-high rates of smoking. The health ministry published photographs on its website for use by cigarette com-panies, which will be obliged to print them on cigarette packs from May next year as Russia tightens its laws towards a Western-style crackdown on smoking.

The pictures show a blue-tinted image of a dead baby and a graphic image of a blackened gan-grenous foot, as well as more figu-rative images such as a woman’s hand making a “thumbs-down” gesture to represent impotency. “Global experience shows that shocking pictures on cigarette packs significantly influenced changes in perception of smok-ing by smokers themselves,” the ministry said.

Company officials say they’ve talked to a variety of private space-flight firms around the world and have secured at least one supplier for every major piece of the Mars colony mission. The corporate sponsorship money will be used mostly to fund the conceptual de-sign studies provided by the aero-space suppliers, each of which require 500 to 2,500 man-hours to complete, officials said.

Mars One estimates that it will cost about $6 billion to put the first four humans on the Red Planet. The company hopes the “Big Brother”-style reality show will pay most of these costs. The televised action is slated to begin in 2013, when Mars One begins the process of selecting its 40-person astronaut corps.

Russia to put shock images on cigarette packs

Deputy health minister Sergei Velmyaikin estimated that Russia lost almost 1.5 trillion rubles ($46 billion) per year from tobacco-related deaths among people of working age, the Interfax news agency reported. The WHO said that graphic warnings on packs would be a “major step forward in The Russian Federation to be compliant with the WHO Frame-work Convention on Tobacco Control.”

ment, in which the prearranged honeymoon precedes the wedding ceremony. Since it’s otherwise quite expensive to marry on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ is becoming more and more popular. It has particular appeal to the Balinese sense of theater. Balinese love a spectacu-lar kidnapping in which friends of the suitor capture a woman in the fields, on the road, or down by the river. Theatrics are paramount: she is expected to bite and kick her abductors in mock self-defense.

These days it’s more stylish and fashionable for the woman to be whisked away in a hired sedan, and more often than not she goes willingly. The couple then repairs to a friend’s house stocked with provisions, offerings, and the

bride’s wardrobe. The woman’s infuriated father sounds the alarm demanding to know what has become of his daughter. A search party is organized which even-tually returns unsuccessful and exhausted.

Meanwhile, the couple is con-summating the marriage before special offerings (sesayut tabuh rah) have the time to wilt. These offerings alone make the mar-riage binding by customary law. Emissaries of the groom visit the bride’s father to argue the advan-tages of the union. Begrudgingly, the girl’s father gives in, after a suitable bride price has been agreed upon. The groom’s father must finance and conduct the marriage ceremony, welcoming the bride as a new daughter into the family. The actual public wed-ding, within 42 days of the staged kidnapping, is only an official confirmation of their union. They are already married in the eyes of the gods.

MepadikThis is marriage by consent,

in which an upper-class couple conducts a formal courtship. Since daughters were once regarded

as property useful for attaining a family’s social and political goals, high-caste families tried to wed a son to the daughter of a friend or relative so a blood bond would unite the resources of both families.

Under no circumstances may a woman “marry down,” i.e., take a commoner. The preferred marriage is through a parallel patri-cousin, the father’s brother’s daughter. It has been noted that Triwangsa couples often get along so well because they are all first cousins. Traditionally, the man or his father journeys three times to the bride’s house with food and ‘sirih’. When the bride’s fam-ily visits, the groom’s father is obliged to give them food, ‘sirih’ is chewed (an ancient, ritualistic means of coming to agreement), and presents are exchanged. The groom then regularly visits the home of his prospective bride, presenting gifts and performing services for his future father-in-law.

The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by profes-

sional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements. Sometimes the bride’s family is not even invited.

The actual ceremony varies. It could be very simple and short, presided over by a common temple ‘pemangku’, or it may be elaborate, expensive, and go on all day. Both the bride and groom dress in bright ‘songket’, with brocades of gold thread, and the woman’s hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers.

Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important sym-bolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple. Neither rice nor flow-ers are thrown. Today there could very well be a Western-style buf-fet reception held afterward where speeches are offered by members of the two families.

An anti-nuclear clamor has grown in Japan since an earthquake and tsu-nami damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March last year, trigger-ing the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years. The government, mindful of public opinion ahead of an election, had been hinting that it might set a target of eliminating atomic power by 2030 - a big shift for an economy that

had planned to boost nuclear energy before last year’s accident.

Furukawa said the ruling Demo-cratic Party would draw up the policy at the end of the week. “The party plans to compile the policy this week, and based on the party’s discussions, the government is on course to set its policy sometime between this weekend and early next week,” he told reporters.

But he suggested the government might dodge the crucial question over the long-term role of nuclear in the energy mix. “The government has not adopted any particular stance,” he said when asked if the new policy would contain a reference to “zero nuclear”.

The government is considering three options for its energy portfolio: reduce nuclear power to zero as soon as pos-sible, aim for 15 percent by 2030, or seek a 20-25 percent share by the same date. The share was about 30 percent before last year’s accident, which forced the government to scrap a 2010 plan to boost nuclear power’s share to more than half of electricity needs by 2030.

LONDON - Police in North-ern Ireland fired plastic bullets and water cannon on rioters late on Monday in a second night of sectarian clashes between Catho-lics and Protestants that left nine police officers injured.

Police fired plastic rounds for the first time during the dis-turbances after protesters threw petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and stones at officers trying to separate rival groups in north Belfast.

Rioters from the Protestant group hijacked a van at one point and pushed it at police lines. At least three of the injured officers were taken to a hospital.

The second night of distur-bances followed a march by a Catholic Irish nationalist band in an area where Protestant groups were recently barred from march-ing.

At least 47 officers were hurt

in clashes on Sunday in the dis-pute over the rights of the two communities to hold parades in the area.

Last weekend, seven police officers were hurt in the same area when a Protestant band marched past a Catholic church playing music in defiance of a ban from the parades commis-sion, which regulates marches in the province.

Paramilitary violence between the province’s mainly Catho-lic republicans and pro-British Protestants, which raged on and off for three decades, has largely ended since a peace agreement was signed in 1998, but much of Belfast remains divided along sectarian lines.

Riots often erupt during the summer months when Protestant groups hold traditional parades that are seen as provocative by Catholic nationalists, many of whom want to be part of a united Ireland.

Prime Minister David Cameron is set to reshuffle his ailing govern-ment on Tuesday, but with unpopular Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne expected to keep his job despite continued economic gloom. TOKYO - Japan is scheduled to set national energy policy early next week, Economics Minister Motohisa Furukawa said on Tuesday, although he said the government had not taken any particular position on the main question over the role of nuclear power.

Therefore, the total inpatient is 9 people,” said Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Monday (Sep 3).

After undergoing dialysis process, according to Nariyantha, condition of the 9 patients was gradually getting better. They no longer had complaint about nausea and vomiting as they felt when initially came into the hospital. Likewise, the blurry eye symptom was not found.

Although getting better, his party could not ascertain when the nine pa-tients under treatment could go home. “Their condition should be observed first. When completely cured, they will be allowed to go home,” said Nariyantha.

According to the Division Head of Forensic Medicine of Sanglah Hos-pital, IB Putu Alit, various symptoms of alcohol poisoning and severity of reaction felt by each victim highly depended on the condition and endur-ance. He said the alcohol or ethyl alco-hol, namely the consumable alcohol, rarely caused death.

Lethal dosage was 500 mg. Unlike methanol, it could cause death in the amount of 30-100 cc. “However, the death due to alcohol rarely happens. At the dosage of 300 mg has caused muscle dysfunction, hallucinations, hypothermia and neurological disor-ders, so that the victim will be unable to drink more,” said Alit.

He continued that people’s reac-

tion against the alcohol contained in liquor varied and depended on their body condition, the amount of alco-hol content, body weight and age. Basically, alcohol had an influence in suppressing the central nervous system when getting absorbed in the body.

In higher concentration, according to Alit, alcohol could cause disorders to nervous system and cause death. Consumption in the long term, other than affecting the nerves that resulted in dementia, also disturbed the liver function.

According to Alit, alcoholic bev-erages could be drunk as long as the alcohol content complying with the rules. The alcohol was metabolized well by the body if the content was about 20 percent or 20 mg. More than the content would make the body dif-ficult carry out metabolic processes so that harmed the body system.

Different content of alcohol caused different influence. Alcohol content 30 mg could make a drinker easily get aroused, while 30-50 mg affected the self-control, reaction speed and eye-sight. For consumption of 60-80 mg, the drinker would experience an im-pairment of three-dimensional visual and hearing. “Consumption of 80-100 mg can cause poisoning to vital center and consumption of 300 mg can cause muscle and nerve dysfunction, and above that content can cause paralysis and death,” explained Alit.

The current problem was, added Alit, the alcohol content of many al-coholic drinks produced by cottage in-dustry was unknown. “There has been no standard regulating the allowable alcoholic content in the cottage indus-try. Besides, no one has examined the content of substances mixed into the alcoholic drink produced by cottage industry,” explained Alit. (san)

During dry season, virtually all the rivers in Jembrana dry out. If there is water flow it must be very small. A number of subak territories having had a regular cropping pattern live through a change and cannot plant on time. Subak Yehembang, for in-stance, should have started irrigating their farmland and planting rice, but it was finally late because of small water flow.

One of the farmers, Dewa Murdika, 43, from Bale Agung hamlet, Yehem-bang village, said he could not plant

on time because there was no water. As mentioned in the earlier meeting, the subak members should irrigate their farmland at the end of August, but as no water available their farmland could not be irrigated until Septem-ber. He believed the water crisis was caused by the even deforestation. It had become a common secret where the forest had been cultivated and people could easily go in and out of protected forest. The forest land had been transformed by planting it with production plants as cultivating their

own gardens. In the past, despite af-flicted by drought, the water in the river and trench remained to flow and could be exploited by communities. In contrast, the water had now been shrinking where the depth did not reach the calf of adults.

Deputy Chief of Subak Yehem-bang, Gede Suardika, said the water discharge reduction only happened this time so the planting schedule at Subak Timur delayed. The condition was triggered by a combination of drought and forest destruction. With-out looking for immediate solutions, it would threaten the subak.

Decline in water was very influ-ential to the planting plan. His party did not want to accuse someone or particular parties, but the matter of forest had been generally known. “As an organization, we will not criticize or accuse anyone that has caused the forest destruction, but we hope there will be a breakthrough to overcome this environmental problem,” he explained. It should be attempted how people in the downstream and upstream could be mutually beneficial. Government had tried some measures such as reforestation, but it had not been maximal.

Meanwhile, it was difficult to prohibit people from going into the forest as related to job opportunities and economic issues. Appropriate solution was required to benefit both parties where subak could still work properly and community living adjacent to the forest would not be disturbed. (kmb26)

BERLIN — A union representing Lufthansa flight attendants called mem-bers at Frankfurt and Berlin’s Tegel airport out on strike Tuesday, escalating a pay dispute with Germany’s biggest airline and forcing widespread flight cancelations.

The UFO union called on Berlin-based members to walk out for eight hours starting at 5 a.m. (0300 GMT), and their counterparts at Frankfurt, Germany’s busiest airport and Luf-thansa’s main hub, to follow at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT).

UFO also planned to hit Germany’s second-busiest airport, Munich, on Tuesday. An 11-hour walkout there was set to start at 1 p.m. (1100 GMT).

Lufthansa said the walkouts would force it to cancel “a majority of flights.” It listed around 200 flights as canceled Tuesday morning, most of them to and

from Frankfurt — mostly on short- and medium-haul routes — but also flights to and from destinations including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Beijing and Mexico City.

The union opened its strike campaign with an eight-hour walkout in Frankfurt last Friday and warned of more to come if Lufthansa didn’t give ground. It has given only a few hours’ notice of where and when it plans to strike.

UFO is seeking a 5 percent pay raise for the airline’s more than 18,000 cabin crew workers. Lufthansa has said it is offering a 3.5 percent raise.

Other issues in their dispute include the possibility of Lufthansa transferring flight attendants to its partner budget airlines with cheaper contracts as part of a cost-saving program.

Lufthansa is trying to cut costs amid tough competition from budget car-riers in Europe and from rising Gulf airlines.

The ECB is expected to unveil details of a long awaited debt-buying scheme to tackle the region’s debt cri-sis at its policy meeting on Thursday, where it may also cut rates as the euro area heads towards a recession.

“There are expectations that the ECB will detail bond buying plans for shorter term maturities and do something on the interest side, but more or less these aspects are priced in,” said Christian Stocker, equity strategist at UniCredit.

The single currency was up 0.3 percent to $1.2625, hovering close to a high of $1.26378 posted last Friday, its strongest level since early July.

Meanwhile, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European stocks was down 0.2 percent to 1,089.74 points in early trade, and the blue chip Euro STOXX 50 index had declined by 0.1 percent to 2,461.50 points.

The ECB’s next step looked more certain after its President Mario Draghi told European lawmakers on Monday that the central bank’s purchases of short-term sovereign bonds would not breach any European Union rules.

If the ECB meets expectations, the market’s focus will likely turn to the Fed’s policy-making meeting next week where it will consider whether further monetary easing is warranted.

The U.S. Institute for Supply Manage-ment’s manufacturing data is due out later after similar surveys on Monday showed factory activity is slowing around the world. Friday’s August U.S. non farm payrolls report will also be crucial.

Oil and gold prices were supported by the prospect of central bank stimu-lus with Brent crude around $116 a barrel, and the gold price at $1,696.91 an ounce.

MADRID — Spain’s ailing banks won’t likely need to tap all the €100 billion ($125.7 bil-lion) that’s been made available by the country’s euro partners, Economy Minister Luis de Guin-dos said Monday.

In a further indication that Spain’s economic problems are not as acute as some in the markets have been fearing, De Guindos also insisted that no ad-ditional austerity measures will be needed to meet the Spanish government’s deficit-reduction target. Spain is battling to avoid the same bailout fate as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus.

However, De Guindos said Spain’s most troubled bank, Bankia, will get urgent aid, while two indebted Spanish regions appealed for emergency funding to deal with a crippling liquidity crunch.

Spain’s banks have an esti-mated €184 billion in problem-atic real estate loans and invest-ments following the collapse of the country’s property market in 2008. The other 16 eurozone countries have set aside the rescue package to help troubled Spanish lenders.

“In principle, it looks like not

all of (the €100 billion) will be used,” De Guindos told Onda Cero radio.

De Guindos said austerity policies being enacted by the government will be enough for Spain to meet its target of re-ducing the budget deficit to 6.3 percent of national income this year from 9 percent last. The government has already unveiled a €65 billion package of tax hikes and spending cuts.

“Spain has already set out a path which is sufficient for the problems we face,” De Guindos said. He said he didn’t expect other eurozone countries to de-mand more economic reforms in Spain.

Spain agreed late Monday to make an emergency injection of €4.5 billion ($5.7 billion) into Bankia SA, buying new shares in the lender nationalized in May. Bankia has become the poster child for the country’s hurting banks, saddled by billions in soured real estate assets.

Bankia has called for a total of €19 billion in public aid. The total amount that will be injected into Bankia should be made pub-lic in coming weeks after audits of Spain banks are completed, said a statement from the fund for the orderly restructuring of

banks, or FROB, a bank rescue fund set up to help Spain’s deeply troubled financial sector.

Spain is in a double-dip reces-sion with a near 25 percent unem-ployment rate. Investors fearing Spain may not be able to pay off its debts have charged high prices for loans to the country. That’s piled the pressure on Spain to reduce its swollen deficit, cut central and regional government spending and clean up its bank-ing system.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to visit Madrid on Thursday for talks with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Monday that Spain must push through its reform plans to im-prove the long-term prospects of its economy and alleviate market concerns.

Spain’s heavily indebted re-gions are another concern for the government. The northeastern region of Catalonia, which an-nounced last week it would seek €5.02 billion in aid from the cen-tral government, said Monday it urgently needs money and won’t be able to wait until September, as planned, El Pais reported. Also, the regional government of Andalucia is asking for €1 billion in emergency funding, it said.

The next is the Pemacekan Agung that occurs 5 days after the Galun-gan and 5 days before Kuningan. ‘Pemacekan’ comes from word

‘pacek’ means ‘pin’. Philosophi-cally, this day is considered as the milestone of holiness. ‘Segehan Agung’ (Great Offering) are devoted at the front of the gates of houses, buildings and temples.

On the day after, called ‘Ang-gara (Tuesday) Umanis Kuningan’, people prepare for the upcoming Kuningan.

The following day, ‘Budha Pah-ing Kuningan’, is considered as the ‘Pujawali Bhatara Wisnu’ day; which means the day to worship the manifestation of God Almighty as God Wisnu, the Great Preserver of the Universe.

The next two days, ‘Wrespati (Thursday) Pon Kuningan’, and followed by the ‘Penampahan Kun-ingan’, are religious days set aside to prepare for Kuningan.

The day is devoted to Sang Hyang Pasupati, the Lord of Heirlooms. Tumpek Landep is derived from the words, Tumpek, meaning Saturday of Kliwon, and Landep, meaning sharp.

During this day, the heirlooms

such as the “kris” (wavy dagger) and other weapons kept at the family temple are taken out for a blessing that ensures the continuation of the magic powers that bring good fortune upon their owners. Gener-ally the special offerings are made for all tools and other objects made of metal. All kitchen implements,

garden tools and metal parts of machinery and vehicles are cleaned, and adorned with a set of offerings. Visitors may experience the only place in the world where the roads are graced with numerous vehicles beautifully decorated with offerings and elaborate ornaments made from young coconut leaves.

According to Armaya, the fail-ure of investment happened because consumers were less intelligent, thorough, and careful against all forms of investment on offer in Bali. “We appeal to consumers to be careful with the investment business offered in Bali. unit has destroyed Rp1 billion worth of drugs, including 358 grams of cocaine, 1,486 grams of ecstasy and 1,975 grams of marijuana.

The drugs were seized during the arrests of several suspects, such as Muklis Triharyanto, Gopil, Wahyu Triswayanto, Andri Yuniko, who are now doing time in Salemba prison.

West Jakarta Police narcotics unit head Adj. Snr. Com Gembong Yudha said on Monday that the suspects were arrested two months ago in West and Central Jakarta.

“All the drugs, which were worth a total of Rp1 billion, have been destroyed.” he added.

The drugs were destroyed by narcotics ex-perts from the National Police headquarters in the presence of West Jakarta State Judiciary.

“Cocaine and ecstasy were mixed with water before being drained to the sewer in front of the police office, while the marijuana was burned,” Gembong noted.

The drugs are generally used as evidence by the police during their investigation and arrest of drugs dealers.

“The investigative reports have been sent to the judiciary and will be presented in the court later, while the drugs were partly destroyed be-cause the rest have been saved to conduct further investigation,” Gembong explained.

He added that the ecstasy confiscated from the suspects had come from China, while the marijuana was brought from Aceh “and all of them are not related to Kampung Ambon”.

“The suspects are dealers who sell the nar-cotics across Jakarta. We are still investigating this case to get hold of the major drug dealers,” Gembong said.

The police have so far arrested 10,818 people who are potential victims of drug abuse.

The suspects were convicted under Ar-ticle 112, 114 and 132 of Narcotics Law and were sentenced to either life imprisonment or death.

In Indonesia’s capital before heading to China, Clinton offered strong U.S. support for a region-ally endorsed six-point plan to ease rising tensions by implementing a code of conduct for all claimants to disputed islands. Jakarta is the headquarters of the Association of South East Asian Nations, and Clinton pressed the group to in-sist that China agree to a formal multilateral mechanism to reduce short-term risks of conflict and ultimately come to final settlements over sovereignty.

The stance puts the U.S. squarely at odds with China, which has become increasingly assertive in pressing its territorial claims with its smaller neighbors and wants the disputes to be resolved individually with each country, giving it greater leverage than dealing with a bloc.

Clinton made the case in Tues-day meetings with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yud-hoyono and ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan, a day after she delivered the same message to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

“The United States has a national interest, as every country does, in the maintenance of peace and stability, respect for international law, freedom of navigation, un-impeded lawful commerce in the South China Sea,” Clinton told reporters at a news conference with Natalegawa.

“The United States does not take a position on competing territorial claims ... but we believe the nations of the region should work collabora-tively to resolve disputes without

coercion, without intimidation and certainly without the use of force,” she said. “That is why we encourage ASEAN and China to make mean-ingful progress toward finalizing a comprehensive code of conduct in order to establish rules of the road and clear procedures for peacefully addressing disagreements.”

Indonesia has played a leading role in putting the six-point plan together after ASEAN was unable to reach consensus on the matter in July. Clinton said the U.S. is “en-couraged” by the plan but wants it acted on — particularly implemen-tation and enforcement of the code of conduct, which has languished since a preliminary framework for it was first agreed upon in 2002. Clinton said the U.S. wants to see the disputes resolved between China and ASEAN.

The U.S. believes the alliance has collective clout that its 10 members do not have individually, and Clinton said the U.S. sees it as important for ASEAN and China to have something to show for their efforts by a November summit of East Asian leaders that President Barack Obama plans to attend in Cambodia.

“It is time for diplomacy,” she said. “We have the East Asia Sum-mit coming up. This should be the goal that diplomacy pursues to try to attain agreement ... on a robust code of conduct to begin to try to literally calm the waters and enable people to work together toward bet-ter outcomes. I think we can make progress before the East Asia Sum-mit and it is certainly in everyone’s interest that we do so.”

Natalegawa agreed with Clinton on the importance of the code of conduct and the need to set it up quickly.

“We must try to have the code of conduct,” he said. “Absent a code of conduct, absent the diplomatic process, we can be certain of more incidents and tension for our region. Absent an ASEAN unity, the ques-tion will become like a loose cannon in the way the issue is discussed.”

NEW YORK — Didn’t take long for Serena Williams to show her fourth-round opponent at the U.S. Open where things were headed.

AmONg the local residents, the Goa Gajah Temple is better known as Cave Temple, located in the west of Bedahulu Village, Blahbatuh Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency. It is about 27 km east of Denpasar. A visit to this temple can be done easily because it is only a few feet below the highway toward the village of Tampaksiring Indeed this temple was built at the valley of Petanu River having beautiful natural panorama.

Goa Gajah was rediscovered in 1923 and in 1954 was rediscovered the bathing pond in front of the cave followed by the restoration and re-installation of the shower areas that originally located in front of the cave where its condition was incomplete.

In the northern part of the temple, lies a carved Cave of Nature in the shape of the letter ”T”. Inside this cave there is a Ganesha statue con-sidered as the god of sciences. Ad-ditionally, at the location can also be encountered some fragments of statues and a Trilangga surrounded by eight small phallus.

In the cave wall, there are niches of the hermitage and the face of Cave is decorated with carvings depicting a jungle with its contents. Similarly, there is a short inscrip-tion which reads ”Kumon” and ”Sahywangsa”, which according to the type of letters it is alleged to originate in the eleventh century AD .

Meanwhile in the west of the cave, there is a building retaining a squating statue inside, and the Ga-nesha as well as Men Brayut statue. The latter in Buddhist mythology is known as Hariti, the savior of children.

In front of the cave, except for the guard statues, there are also fragments of building whose origin was unknown such as the building fragments that now being gathered in the temple’s courtyard located in the west of bathing pond. Fountain statues that have worked again in the holy bathing pond are divided into three parts and in terms of its style, they are probably derived from the eleventh century AD. Unfortunately, the statue fountain located in the middle of the pond, has not been found until now.

In the meantime, in the southeast of Goa Gajah Temple occur two Buddha statues, one of them is with-out head while another is still good enough with the style of Central Java. The north side of this statue seemingly stay to stick on the cliffs, where the foot of the cliff temple has long fallen into the creek. On the side of this small can be found three-pronged relief of stupa and the ruins of the cliff temple having beautiful carvings.

Based on archeological find-ings as mentioned above, it can be known the Goa Gajah Temple is derived from the ninth to eleventh centuries AD. In the past, it served

as a monastery of Buddhist monk and Shivite priest. This conserva-tism also shows the unification of Buddhism and Shiva went well.

For tourists who would like to visit to Goa Gajah Temple are required to wear a scarf or sarong because other than functioning

as archaeological attractions, this temple also poses a sacred place or sanctum. Sarongs and scarves are available at the location.

Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg announced a major double signing on Monday, with Brazilian international attacker Hulk arriving from Portuguese giants Porto and Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel signing from Benfica.

Both players have signed five-year contracts. The deal for Hulk was the first to be revealed, with Zenit’s club site announcing: “Congratulations to all of our supporters, to all of our fans, Hulk joined Zenit.”

No financial details of the Hulk deal were disclosed, though Russian daily Sport Express reported, referring to an unnamed Zenit club source, that Zenit would pay Porto around 40 million euros ($50.4m) in several instalments over three years.

However, the player’s agent, Teodoro Fon-seca, told Portuguese agency Lusa that the fee was 60 million euros.

The 26-year-old, who has won three Portuguese titles and the 2011 Europa

NEW YORK — Didn’t take long for Serena Williams to show her fourth-round opponent at the U.S. Open where things were headed.

AmONg the local residents, the Goa Gajah Temple is better known as Cave Temple, located in the west of Bedahulu Village, Blahbatuh Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency. It is about 27 km east of Denpasar. A visit to this temple can be done easily because it is only a few feet below the highway toward the village of Tampaksiring Indeed this temple was built at the valley of Petanu River having beautiful natural panorama.

Goa Gajah was rediscovered in 1923 and in 1954 was rediscovered the bathing pond in front of the cave followed by the restoration and re-installation of the shower areas that originally located in front of the cave where its condition was incomplete.

In the northern part of the temple, lies a carved Cave of Nature in the shape of the letter ”T”. Inside this cave there is a Ganesha statue con-sidered as the god of sciences. Ad-ditionally, at the location can also be encountered some fragments of statues and a Trilangga surrounded by eight small phallus.

In the cave wall, there are niches of the hermitage and the face of Cave is decorated with carvings depicting a jungle with its contents. Similarly, there is a short inscrip-tion which reads ”Kumon” and ”Sahywangsa”, which according to the type of letters it is alleged to originate in the eleventh century AD .

Meanwhile in the west of the cave, there is a building retaining a squating statue inside, and the Ga-nesha as well as Men Brayut statue. The latter in Buddhist mythology is known as Hariti, the savior of children.

In front of the cave, except for the guard statues, there are also fragments of building whose origin was unknown such as the building fragments that now being gathered in the temple’s courtyard located in the west of bathing pond. Fountain statues that have worked again in the holy bathing pond are divided into three parts and in terms of its style, they are probably derived from the eleventh century AD. Unfortunately, the statue fountain located in the middle of the pond, has not been found until now.

In the meantime, in the southeast of Goa Gajah Temple occur two Buddha statues, one of them is with-out head while another is still good enough with the style of Central Java. The north side of this statue seemingly stay to stick on the cliffs, where the foot of the cliff temple has long fallen into the creek. On the side of this small can be found three-pronged relief of stupa and the ruins of the cliff temple having beautiful carvings.

Based on archeological find-ings as mentioned above, it can be known the Goa Gajah Temple is derived from the ninth to eleventh centuries AD. In the past, it served

as a monastery of Buddhist monk and Shivite priest. This conserva-tism also shows the unification of Buddhism and Shiva went well.

unit has destroyed Rp1 billion worth of drugs, including 358 grams of cocaine, 1,486 grams of ecstasy and 1,975 grams of marijuana.

The drugs were seized during the arrests of several suspects, such as Muklis Triharyanto, Gopil, Wahyu Triswayanto, Andri Yuniko, who are now doing time in Salemba prison.

West Jakarta Police narcotics unit head Adj. Snr. Com Gembong Yudha said on Monday that the suspects were arrested two months ago in West and Central Jakarta.

“All the drugs, which were worth a total of Rp1 billion, have been destroyed.” he added.

The drugs were destroyed by narcotics ex-perts from the National Police headquarters in the presence of West Jakarta State Judiciary.

“Cocaine and ecstasy were mixed with water before being drained to the sewer in front of the police office, while the marijuana was burned,” Gembong noted.

The drugs are generally used as evidence by the police during their investigation and arrest of drugs dealers.

“The investigative reports have been sent to the judiciary and will be presented in the court later, while the drugs were partly destroyed be-cause the rest have been saved to conduct further investigation,” Gembong explained.

He added that the ecstasy confiscated from the suspects had come from China, while the marijuana was brought from Aceh “and all of them are not related to Kampung Ambon”.

“The suspects are dealers who sell the nar-cotics across Jakarta. We are still investigating this case to get hold of the major drug dealers,” Gembong said.

The police have so far arrested 10,818 people who are potential victims of drug abuse.

The suspects were convicted under Ar-ticle 112, 114 and 132 of Narcotics Law and were sentenced to either life imprisonment or death.

In Indonesia’s capital before heading to China, Clinton offered strong U.S. support for a region-ally endorsed six-point plan to ease rising tensions by implementing a code of conduct for all claimants to disputed islands. Jakarta is the headquarters of the Association of South East Asian Nations, and Clinton pressed the group to in-sist that China agree to a formal multilateral mechanism to reduce short-term risks of conflict and ultimately come to final settlements over sovereignty.

The stance puts the U.S. squarely at odds with China, which has become increasingly assertive in pressing its territorial claims with its smaller neighbors and wants the disputes to be resolved individually with each country, giving it greater leverage than dealing with a bloc.

Clinton made the case in Tues-day meetings with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yud-hoyono and ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan, a day after she delivered the same message to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

“The United States has a national interest, as every country does, in the maintenance of peace and stability, respect for international law, freedom of navigation, un-impeded lawful commerce in the South China Sea,” Clinton told reporters at a news conference with Natalegawa.

“The United States does not take a position on competing territorial claims ... but we believe the nations of the region should work collabora-tively to resolve disputes without

coercion, without intimidation and certainly without the use of force,” she said. “That is why we encourage ASEAN and China to make mean-ingful progress toward finalizing a comprehensive code of conduct in order to establish rules of the road and clear procedures for peacefully addressing disagreements.”

Indonesia has played a leading role in putting the six-point plan together after ASEAN was unable to reach consensus on the matter in July. Clinton said the U.S. is “en-couraged” by the plan but wants it acted on — particularly implemen-tation and enforcement of the code of conduct, which has languished since a preliminary framework for it was first agreed upon in 2002. Clinton said the U.S. wants to see the disputes resolved between China and ASEAN.

The U.S. believes the alliance has collective clout that its 10 members do not have individually, and Clinton said the U.S. sees it as important for ASEAN and China to have something to show for their efforts by a November summit of East Asian leaders that President Barack Obama plans to attend in Cambodia.

“It is time for diplomacy,” she said. “We have the East Asia Sum-mit coming up. This should be the goal that diplomacy pursues to try to attain agreement ... on a robust code of conduct to begin to try to literally calm the waters and enable people to work together toward bet-ter outcomes. I think we can make progress before the East Asia Sum-mit and it is certainly in everyone’s interest that we do so.”

Natalegawa agreed with Clinton on the importance of the code of conduct and the need to set it up quickly.

“We must try to have the code of conduct,” he said. “Absent a code of conduct, absent the diplomatic process, we can be certain of more incidents and tension for our region. Absent an ASEAN unity, the ques-tion will become like a loose cannon in the way the issue is discussed.”

BERLIN — A union representing Lufthansa flight attendants called mem-bers at Frankfurt and Berlin’s Tegel airport out on strike Tuesday, escalating a pay dispute with Germany’s biggest airline and forcing widespread flight cancelations.

The UFO union called on Berlin-based members to walk out for eight hours starting at 5 a.m. (0300 GMT), and their counterparts at Frankfurt, Germany’s busiest airport and Luf-thansa’s main hub, to follow at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT).

UFO also planned to hit Germany’s second-busiest airport, Munich, on Tuesday. An 11-hour walkout there was set to start at 1 p.m. (1100 GMT).

Lufthansa said the walkouts would force it to cancel “a majority of flights.” It listed around 200 flights as canceled Tuesday morning, most of them to and

from Frankfurt — mostly on short- and medium-haul routes — but also flights to and from destinations including Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Beijing and Mexico City.

The union opened its strike campaign with an eight-hour walkout in Frankfurt last Friday and warned of more to come if Lufthansa didn’t give ground. It has given only a few hours’ notice of where and when it plans to strike.

UFO is seeking a 5 percent pay raise for the airline’s more than 18,000 cabin crew workers. Lufthansa has said it is offering a 3.5 percent raise.

Other issues in their dispute include the possibility of Lufthansa transferring flight attendants to its partner budget airlines with cheaper contracts as part of a cost-saving program.

Lufthansa is trying to cut costs amid tough competition from budget car-riers in Europe and from rising Gulf airlines.

The ECB is expected to unveil details of a long awaited debt-buying scheme to tackle the region’s debt cri-sis at its policy meeting on Thursday, where it may also cut rates as the euro area heads towards a recession.

“There are expectations that the ECB will detail bond buying plans for shorter term maturities and do something on the interest side, but more or less these aspects are priced in,” said Christian Stocker, equity strategist at UniCredit.

The single currency was up 0.3 percent to $1.2625, hovering close to a high of $1.26378 posted last Friday, its strongest level since early July.

The ECB’s next step looked more certain after its President Mario Draghi told European lawmakers on Monday that the central bank’s purchases of short-term sovereign bonds would not breach any European Union rules.

If the ECB meets expectations, the market’s focus will likely turn to the Fed’s policy-making meeting next week where it will consider whether further monetary easing is warranted.

The U.S. Institute for Supply Manage-ment’s manufacturing data is due out later after similar surveys on Monday showed factory activity is slowing around the world. Friday’s August U.S. non farm payrolls report will also be crucial.

MADRID — Spain’s ailing banks won’t likely need to tap all the €100 billion ($125.7 bil-lion) that’s been made available by the country’s euro partners, Economy Minister Luis de Guin-dos said Monday.

In a further indication that Spain’s economic problems are not as acute as some in the markets have been fearing, De Guindos also insisted that no ad-ditional austerity measures will be needed to meet the Spanish government’s deficit-reduction target. Spain is battling to avoid the same bailout fate as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus.

However, De Guindos said Spain’s most troubled bank, Bankia, will get urgent aid, while two indebted Spanish regions appealed for emergency funding to deal with a crippling liquidity crunch.

Spain’s banks have an esti-mated €184 billion in problem-atic real estate loans and invest-ments following the collapse of the country’s property market in 2008. The other 16 eurozone countries have set aside the rescue package to help troubled Spanish lenders.

“In principle, it looks like not

all of (the €100 billion) will be used,” De Guindos told Onda Cero radio.

De Guindos said austerity policies being enacted by the government will be enough for Spain to meet its target of re-ducing the budget deficit to 6.3 percent of national income this year from 9 percent last. The government has already unveiled a €65 billion package of tax hikes and spending cuts.

“Spain has already set out a path which is sufficient for the problems we face,” De Guindos said. He said he didn’t expect other eurozone countries to de-mand more economic reforms in Spain.

Spain agreed late Monday to make an emergency injection of €4.5 billion ($5.7 billion) into Bankia SA, buying new shares in the lender nationalized in May. Bankia has become the poster child for the country’s hurting banks, saddled by billions in soured real estate assets.

Bankia has called for a total of €19 billion in public aid. The total amount that will be injected into Bankia should be made pub-lic in coming weeks after audits of Spain banks are completed, said a statement from the fund for the orderly restructuring of

banks, or FROB, a bank rescue fund set up to help Spain’s deeply troubled financial sector.

Spain is in a double-dip reces-sion with a near 25 percent unem-ployment rate. Investors fearing Spain may not be able to pay off its debts have charged high prices for loans to the country. That’s piled the pressure on Spain to reduce its swollen deficit, cut central and regional government spending and clean up its bank-ing system.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to visit Madrid on Thursday for talks with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Monday that Spain must push through its reform plans to im-prove the long-term prospects of its economy and alleviate market concerns.

Spain’s heavily indebted re-gions are another concern for the government. The northeastern region of Catalonia, which an-nounced last week it would seek €5.02 billion in aid from the cen-tral government, said Monday it urgently needs money and won’t be able to wait until September, as planned, El Pais reported. The following day, ‘Budha Pah-ing Kuningan’, is considered as the ‘Pujawali Bhatara Wisnu’ day; which means the day to worship the manifestation of God Almighty as God Wisnu, the Great Preserver of the Universe.

An anti-nuclear clamor has grown in Japan since an earthquake and tsu-nami damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March last year, trigger-ing the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years. The government, mindful of public opinion ahead of an election, had been hinting that it might set a target of eliminating atomic power by 2030 - a big shift for an economy that

had planned to boost nuclear energy before last year’s accident.

Furukawa said the ruling Demo-cratic Party would draw up the policy at the end of the week. “The party plans to compile the policy this week, and based on the party’s discussions, the government is on course to set its policy sometime between this weekend and early next week,” he told reporters.

But he suggested the government might dodge the crucial question over the long-term role of nuclear in the energy mix. “The government has not adopted any particular stance,” he said when asked if the new policy would contain a reference to “zero nuclear”.

The government is considering three options for its energy portfolio: reduce nuclear power to zero as soon as pos-sible, aim for 15 percent by 2030, or seek a 20-25 percent share by the same date. The share was about 30 percent before last year’s accident, which forced the government to scrap a 2010 plan to boost nuclear power’s share to more than half of electricity needs by 2030.

LONDON - Police in North-ern Ireland fired plastic bullets and water cannon on rioters late on Monday in a second night of sectarian clashes between Catho-lics and Protestants that left nine police officers injured.

Police fired plastic rounds for the first time during the dis-turbances after protesters threw petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and stones at officers trying to separate rival groups in north Belfast.

Rioters from the Protestant group hijacked a van at one point and pushed it at police lines. At least three of the injured officers were taken to a hospital.

The second night of distur-bances followed a march by a Catholic Irish nationalist band in an area where Protestant groups were recently barred from march-ing.

At least 47 officers were hurt

in clashes on Sunday in the dis-pute over the rights of the two communities to hold parades in the area.

Last weekend, seven police officers were hurt in the same area when a Protestant band marched past a Catholic church playing music in defiance of a ban from the parades commis-sion, which regulates marches in the province.

Paramilitary violence between the province’s mainly Catho-lic republicans and pro-British Protestants, which raged on and off for three decades, has largely ended since a peace agreement was signed in 1998, but much of Belfast remains divided along sectarian lines.

Riots often erupt during the summer months when Protestant groups hold traditional parades that are seen as provocative by Catholic nationalists, many of whom want to be part of a united Ireland.

Up to Monday (Sep 3), the condi-tion of alcohol poisoning victims at Katung, Kintamani, began to get bet-ter. Until Monday, the total patients treated in Sanglah Hospital came to 45 people. “Four additional patients came in on Sunday afternoon, but all were allowed to go home on the same day. Therefore, the total inpatient is 9 people,” said Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Monday (Sep 3).

After undergoing dialysis process, according to Nariyantha, condition of the 9 patients was gradually getting better. They no longer had complaint about nausea and vomiting as they felt when initially came into the hospital. Likewise, the blurry eye symptom was not found.

Although getting better, his party could not ascertain when the nine pa-tients under treatment could go home. “Their condition should be observed first. When completely cured, they will be allowed to go home,” said Nariyantha.

According to the Division Head of Forensic Medicine of Sanglah Hos-pital, IB Putu Alit, various symptoms of alcohol poisoning and severity of reaction felt by each victim highly depended on the condition and endur-ance. He said the alcohol or ethyl alco-hol, namely the consumable alcohol, rarely caused death.

Lethal dosage was 500 mg. Unlike methanol, it could cause death in the amount of 30-100 cc. “However, the death due to alcohol rarely happens. At the dosage of 300 mg has caused muscle dysfunction, hallucinations, hypothermia and neurological disor-ders, so that the victim will be unable to drink more,” said Alit.

He continued that people’s reac-

tion against the alcohol contained in liquor varied and depended on their body condition, the amount of alco-hol content, body weight and age. Basically, alcohol had an influence in suppressing the central nervous system when getting absorbed in the body.

In higher concentration, according to Alit, alcohol could cause disorders to nervous system and cause death. Consumption in the long term, other than affecting the nerves that resulted in dementia, also disturbed the liver function.

According to Alit, alcoholic bev-erages could be drunk as long as the alcohol content complying with the rules. The alcohol was metabolized well by the body if the content was about 20 percent or 20 mg. More than the content would make the body dif-ficult carry out metabolic processes so that harmed the body system.

Different content of alcohol caused different influence. Alcohol content 30 mg could make a drinker easily get aroused, while 30-50 mg affected the self-control, reaction speed and eye-sight. For consumption of 60-80 mg, the drinker would experience an im-pairment of three-dimensional visual and hearing. “Consumption of 80-100 mg can cause poisoning to vital center and consumption of 300 mg can cause muscle and nerve dysfunction, and above that content can cause paralysis and death,” explained Alit.

The current problem was, added Alit, the alcohol content of many al-coholic drinks produced by cottage in-dustry was unknown. “There has been no standard regulating the allowable alcoholic content in the cottage indus-try. Besides, no one has examined the content of substances mixed into the alcoholic drink produced by cottage industry,” explained Alit. (san)

During dry season, virtually all the rivers in Jembrana dry out. If there is water flow it must be very small. A number of subak territories having had a regular cropping pattern live through a change and cannot plant on time. Subak Yehembang, for in-stance, should have started irrigating their farmland and planting rice, but it was finally late because of small water flow.

One of the farmers, Dewa Murdika, 43, from Bale Agung hamlet, Yehem-bang village, said he could not plant

on time because there was no water. As mentioned in the earlier meeting, the subak members should irrigate their farmland at the end of August, but as no water available their farmland could not be irrigated until Septem-ber. He believed the water crisis was caused by the even deforestation. It had become a common secret where the forest had been cultivated and people could easily go in and out of protected forest. The forest land had been transformed by planting it with production plants as cultivating their

own gardens. In the past, despite af-flicted by drought, the water in the river and trench remained to flow and could be exploited by communities. In contrast, the water had now been shrinking where the depth did not reach the calf of adults.

Deputy Chief of Subak Yehem-bang, Gede Suardika, said the water discharge reduction only happened this time so the planting schedule at Subak Timur delayed. The condition was triggered by a combination of drought and forest destruction. With-out looking for immediate solutions, it would threaten the subak.

Decline in water was very influ-ential to the planting plan. His party did not want to accuse someone or particular parties, but the matter of forest had been generally known. “As an organization, we will not criticize or accuse anyone that has caused the forest destruction, but we hope there will be a breakthrough to overcome this environmental problem,” he explained. It should be attempted how people in the downstream and upstream could be mutually beneficial. Government had tried some measures such as reforestation, but it had not been maximal.

Meanwhile, it was difficult to prohibit people from going into the forest as related to job opportunities and economic issues. Appropriate solution was required to benefit both parties where subak could still work properly and community living adjacent to the forest would not be disturbed. (kmb26)

A truckload of new TVs, with screen resolutions four times great-er than so-called full HD screens, are being unveiled at this week’s IFA technology show in Berlin. The screens -- referred to as 4K or ul-tradefinition -- were among dozens of new gadgets on display for the 250,000 people who descended on Berlin’s conference halls.

The show features gear ranging from big-screen smartphones to self-stirring cookware, but the big buzz this year is about 4K. The first sets should be available for preorder this fall. There were still plenty of 3D screens, including a 103-inch Panasonic set that doesn’t require viewers to wear 3D glasses. The excitement over them, however, seems to be dying down.

The new 4K sets from LG, Pana-sonic, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba show a level of detail you’d expect on a movie screen; their resolution equals that of professional cinema

cameras, like the Red One. The detail is stunning, and viewers can comfort-ably sit close to the screen. Even from only a few inches away, it’s impos-sible to discern a single pixel.

Sony claims that chips in its flagship set can scour normal Blu-ray films and display extra details, producing pictures far sharper than what normal sets can offer. In dem-onstrations, films looked stunning on the new screens.

Not to be outdone, Panasonic teamed up with Japanese broad-caster NHK to create an 8K set -- with resolution four times greater than its rivals’ and 16 times greater than Full HD.

There is just one problem, of course: storage. There is no media suitable for storing 4K films just yet. Normal Blu-ray discs aren’t designed for the new format. In Berlin, most tech companies dem-onstrated their sets with slow-motion landscape videos.

A Dutch company that aims to land humans on Mars in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent Red Planet colony has received its first funding from sponsors, officials announced this week.

Mars One plans to fund most of its ambitious activities via a global reality-TV media event, which will follow the mission from the selec-tion of astronauts through their first years on the Red Planet. But the sponsorship money is important, helping the company — which had been self-funded for the last 18 months — get to that point, officials said Wednesday (Aug. 29).

Russia on Monday unveiled a series of graphic images, includ-ing of a gangrenous foot and a still-born baby, that will be printed on cigarette packs as the country tries to trim its sky-high rates of smoking. The health ministry published photographs on its website for use by cigarette com-panies, which will be obliged to print them on cigarette packs from May next year as Russia tightens its laws towards a Western-style crackdown on smoking.

The pictures show a blue-tinted image of a dead baby and a graphic image of a blackened gan-grenous foot, as well as more figu-rative images such as a woman’s hand making a “thumbs-down” gesture to represent impotency. “Global experience shows that shocking pictures on cigarette packs significantly influenced changes in perception of smok-ing by smokers themselves,” the ministry said.

Company officials say they’ve talked to a variety of private space-flight firms around the world and have secured at least one supplier for every major piece of the Mars colony mission. The corporate sponsorship money will be used mostly to fund the conceptual de-sign studies provided by the aero-space suppliers, each of which require 500 to 2,500 man-hours to complete, officials said.

Mars One estimates that it will cost about $6 billion to put the first four humans on the Red Planet. The company hopes the “Big Brother”-style reality show will pay most of these costs. The televised action is slated to begin in 2013, when Mars One begins the process of selecting its 40-person astronaut corps.

The WHO said that graphic warnings on packs would be a “major step forward in The Russian Federation to be compliant with the WHO Frame-work Convention on Tobacco Control.”

Balinese Weddingfrom caste to caste and village to village, but all Balinese mar-riage practices share fundamental similarities. There are basically two ways to get married on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ and ‘mapadik’.

NgerorodThis is marriage by elope-

ment, in which the prearranged honeymoon precedes the wedding ceremony. Since it’s otherwise quite expensive to marry on Bali, ‘ngerorod’ is becoming more and more popular. It has particular appeal to the Balinese sense of theater. Balinese love a spectacu-lar kidnapping in which friends of the suitor capture a woman in the fields, on the road, or down by the river. Theatrics are paramount: she is expected to bite and kick her abductors in mock self-defense.

These days it’s more stylish and fashionable for the woman to be whisked away in a hired sedan, and more often than not she goes willingly. The couple then repairs to a friend’s house stocked with provisions, offerings, and the

bride’s wardrobe. The woman’s infuriated father sounds the alarm demanding to know what has become of his daughter. A search party is organized which even-tually returns unsuccessful and exhausted.

Meanwhile, the couple is con-summating the marriage before special offerings (sesayut tabuh rah) have the time to wilt. These offerings alone make the mar-riage binding by customary law. Emissaries of the groom visit the bride’s father to argue the advan-tages of the union. Begrudgingly, the girl’s father gives in, after a suitable bride price has been agreed upon. The groom’s father must finance and conduct the marriage ceremony, welcoming the bride as a new daughter into the family. The actual public wed-ding, within 42 days of the staged kidnapping, is only an official confirmation of their union. They are already married in the eyes of the gods.

MepadikThis is marriage by consent,

in which an upper-class couple conducts a formal courtship. Since daughters were once regarded

as property useful for attaining a family’s social and political goals, high-caste families tried to wed a son to the daughter of a friend or relative so a blood bond would unite the resources of both families.

Under no circumstances may a woman “marry down,” i.e., take a commoner. The preferred marriage is through a parallel patri-cousin, the father’s brother’s daughter. It has been noted that Triwangsa couples often get along so well because they are all first cousins. Traditionally, the man or his father journeys three times to the bride’s house with food and ‘sirih’. When the bride’s fam-ily visits, the groom’s father is obliged to give them food, ‘sirih’ is chewed (an ancient, ritualistic means of coming to agreement), and presents are exchanged. The groom then regularly visits the home of his prospective bride, presenting gifts and performing services for his future father-in-law.

The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by profes-

sional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements. Sometimes the bride’s family is not even invited.

The actual ceremony varies. It could be very simple and short, presided over by a common temple ‘pemangku’, or it may be elaborate, expensive, and go on all day. Both the bride and groom dress in bright ‘songket’, with brocades of gold thread, and the woman’s hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers.

Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important sym-bolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple. Neither rice nor flow-ers are thrown. Today there could very well be a Western-style buf-fet reception held afterward where speeches are offered by members of the two families.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Citing the UNWTO, Mari estimated that during the period from May to Au-gust there were about 415 million people traveling around the world. “Despite a decrease happened in July, hopefully in August and fol-lowing months it will rise again not just in the number but also in the quality of tourists measured by the length of stay and the amount of expenditure,” she explained. Against the disaster, the project owner of Taman Nusa from Riau fully handed over the fire case to police department. Police would investigate to find out the cause of fire. approximately 15 hectares, right on Melangit riverbank. The new tourist area in Gianyar was currently un-der construction and the miniature of the Indonesia Miniature Park. Meanwhile, police department handling the fire case in the Nusa park project had not indicated any results. The Forensic Laboratory Team of Bali Police investigating the fire case had not published the results yet, explained the Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Gianyar Police, Nengah Sadiarta, with per-mission from the Chief of Gianyar Police. The company’s chief creative officer and writer of the relaunched “Green Lantern” series dreamed up Simon Baz, DC’s most prominent Arab-American superhero and the first to wear a Green Lantern ring. The character and creator share Lebanese ancestry and hail from the Detroit area, which boasts one of the largest and oldest Arab communities in the United States.

“I thought a lot about it — I thought back to what was familiar to me,” Johns, 39, told The Associated Press by phone last week from Los Angeles, where he now lives. “This is such a personal story.”

Baz’s story begins in a standalone “zero issue” available Wednesday that’s part of a companywide effort to fill in the gaps or tell the origins of a character or

team. Johns has no plans for Baz to fade into the background — the character in February is bound for the Justice League of America, one of DC’s premier super team books, to fight alongside Green Ar-row, Catwoman and Hawkman.

Johns said he took economic as well as ethnic cues for the character from his native Detroit area, with Baz resorting to stealing cars after being laid off from his automotive engineering job. He steals the wrong car, which inadvertently steers him into a terrorism probe and, eventually, an unexpected call to join the universe’s galactic police force.

The olive-skinned, burly Baz hails from Dearborn, the hometown of Henry Ford and the capital of Arab America. His story begins at 10 years old, when he and the rest of his Muslim family watch

their television in horror as airplanes fly into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Events unfold from there as U.S. Arabs and Muslims find themselves falling under intense suspicion and os-tracism in the days, months and years following the attacks.

“Obviously, it’s affecting everybody,” said Johns, who grew up in nearby sub-urbs in a Lebanese Christian household and got into comics when he discovered his uncle’s old collection in his Arabic grandmother’s attic. “One of the things I really wanted to show was its effect on Simon and his family in a very negative way.”

WASHINGTON — Presi-dent Barack Obama says he’s a “huge Clint Eastwood fan,” even in the aftermath of the actor’s rambling “invisible Obama” monologue at the GOP convention.

Obama says in an inter-view with USA Today released Sunday the Academy Award-winning Eastwood is “a great actor, and an even better direc-tor.” But Obama was coy when asked if he was offended by the performance.

Eastwood talked with an imaginary Obama in an empty chair before Mitt Romney’s speech at the GOP convention, saying the president has failed to deliver on his promises.

Obama says, quote, “if you’re easily offended, you should probably choose an-other profession.”

The president joked on Twit-ter after Eastwood’s appear-ance, tweeting that “this seat’s taken,” along with a photo of him in his chair at a Cabinet meeting.

The decrease in the number of tourism markets was covered up by a num-ber of countries whose tourist visit increased such as China rising by 9.40 percent, Japan (3.32 percent), and Germany (12.44 percent). “So far, Australia and China remain rank first in the top ten of Bali tourism market,” he said.
