2. What it is 2The Brand Ensemble Content Management System (CMS) isa powerful tool that makes management of our Web site easy.Using it, you can add, delete, and move Web pages; edit texton any page; and upload and place images and les. CMSdoes not require knowledge of Web authoring tools or HTML.While the tool is designed to be simple and intuitive, a basicunderstanding of how it works makes it much easier to getstarted and produce good results. Thats what this documentis for. 3. Anatomy of a typical page 3The CMS tool makes management of the site structureautomatic, so you dont need to worry about building navigationmenus or dening the overall appearance of a page.1 Navigation menu This is where the pagesyou create are listed. When you are on a page(such as the About us page shown here)and create a new page, it automatically appearsindented below the parent page in the navigationmenu. The menu changes appearance dependingon where you are in the site.32 Copy blocks Each page template has one or 1more areas where text, images, and links canappear. All pages are built using pre-conguredtemplates, so the places to insert content arealready dened for you.23 Non-editable items Some items on thepage cannot be altered using the tool. This helps 3to ensure site integrity and consistency.Tip: Be thoughtful about adding pages. Thesite structure has been thoroughly researchedand carefully planned. It is very easy to createa convoluted, messy Web site by addingunnecessary pages. 4. Accessing the tool 4To edit pages on the site, you need to rst log in to the administrationpage. Go to http://www.edisonlearning.com/admin/login.aspx and enteryour user name and password.1 When the tool rst opens, you are presentedwith your My queue in the main part of thewindow. This is a listing of the pages you are 1working on (if any), which have not been pushedlive on the actual site.2 On the right youll see a gray box with a pencil 2icon. Mouse over this and a pop-out menuwill appear.The pencil icon changes to a push pin. Clickingon the push pin will force the menu to remainvisible. Otherwise it automatically retracts whenthe mouse is moved off it to give you more roomto work.The only two things in this menu that areimportant for basic editing tasks are the itemsnext to View: My queue (where you are now)and Home. Click on Home to get into thesite itself, then navigate to the About us page. 5. Creating a page 51 Youll notice that the menu choices have changed.First well create a new page. Select Create anew page from the menu. This will create a sub-page in the About us section.2 Fill in the title of the page, and the page name willbe generated automatically. It is recommended 1that you ll in a description and keywords, to makeit easier for search engines to nd the page. Whenyoure done, click Next.3 Then, choose the page template youll be using. 2Choose carefully...the vast majority of the pageson the site use the free-form Content or Contentwide templates. Do not use the graphic-heavyHome templates without good reason. You canalways change the template later.3 6. Editing a page and applying styles61 When the page is open for editing, a toolbarappears above the page content area. You caneither enter text directly on the page, or you canpaste it from the Clipboard.Tip: Microsoft Word includes a lot of invisibleinformation that can cause formatting problemswhen pasted. Use the Clipboard tool with theWord icon on it to paste this text, but make sureto carefully examine the text once its in place.To be safe, its best to do as little formatting inWord as possible.Make sure to apply the correct style to all of thetext on the page. Select the text you want toformat and choose the appropriate style from thepop-up menu.1 7. Inserting graphics and les71 At the upper left of the page is a gray ImageGallery tool. Click the downward-pointing arrowto see the available images, by category.1 22 Youll notice that our example template has apre-dened box at the top for a header image.Select the Headers category, choose an appro-priate one, drag it to the box and drop it in place.3 You can also drag and drop images into textboxes on the template.4 Images are uploaded to the Image Gallery,3which is accessed from the right-hand menu.Several image categories are provided. This listcan be easily edited. The buttons at the top 4guide you through the upload process and areself-explanatory.5 Theres also a File Gallery, for downloadableles like PDFs.6 Once a le is added to the File Gallery, itsinserted onto the page by creating a link.Right-click on the Link to le selection in theFile Gallery to copy the les URL. Then, on 5the page, create a link to the le by typing thetext you want to appear and clicking on the linktool in the toolbar. Then paste the URL of thele into the dialog. 6Tip: You can also create hot e-mail addresslinks and jump links to anchors in the text usingthis dialog. 8. Saving, publishing, and deleting pages8First, save the page by choosing Save from theright-hand menu.Important: The system will time out after aperiod of inactivity and you will lose any unsavedchanges. Make sure you allow enough time tocomplete your work on any given page beforemoving on to another task.11 The page isnt on the site at this point. It is sittingin your queue. The next step is to publish it. Youll2notice that the right-hand menu now has a newselection: Go live with this version.When you select this, the page will immediately beposted on the public site. Use caution! If the pageis not ready to be shown to the world, do NOT golive with it!2 The page will appear on the navigation menuat the left, at the bottom of its group. You cannow move it to the appropriate spot by selectingSort navigation from the menu. Drag it tothe correct spot in the list and click Done. 9. Moving and deleting pages9To delete a page, navigate to it and selectDelete from the right-hand menu. A conrmationdialog will appear.If youve accidentally created a page in the wrongplace, moving it is easy. Select Add to othersections from the menu and click through thesite to place it in the correct spot.Tip: Add to other sections applies to bottom-levelpages. Sections can also be moved, but this israrely, if ever, done. 10. A nal word10The Brand Ensemble Content Management System is a powerfultool. As such, it should be used with care. It is of the utmostimportance to avoid creep, meaning individual changes to style,editorial voice, or presentation.Avoid changing the site structure without good reason, changingthe way subheads are used, creating new text styles, changingthe way capitalization is used, inserting images or other graphicsthat do not match the style of the site, and so forth.Being cautious, thoughtful, and conservative is the best way topreserve the companys carefully crafted brand image.
