Mrs. Collins’s Corner “It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.” Pope Benedict XVI Dear Saint Raphael Parents & Friends: The manger was oversized and filled with wood shavings, empty, for now. The clay animal figurines included the three-legged sheep and the donkey with one ear. My mother lovingly arranged the animals and the cotton-ball sheep around the manger because they all represented memories of our childhood gifts to her and her own tradition of making this scene the center of our Christmas. I try to recall Christmas memories of goodness and, even though some of the people I loved in those memories are now gone, their love endures. The loving way in which a manger scene was set up brings a smile and hope. The one-eared donkey is a sign of how God can take our brokenness and still have us be part of something good and beautiful. We hope to create loving moments for our own families. We hope to have peace in our homes. We hope to encourage our children to make this world a better place. We hope that we can point our children towards the light of Christ and shelter them from the darkness in our world. We hope. There are ways to fill our homes with the expectation and hope of Christmas. One way is to have an Advent wreath on your table at home. We are in the second week of Advent (which means two candles are lit) and we have extra wreaths in the office. Consider buying one for your home and starting a tradition filled with hope. The Mass celebrating the Immaculate Conception of Mary is this Thursday at 8:30 am in the church. Parents are always welcome to join us! Friday morning, Dec. 9, at 8:15 am, our classes will present their Saint projects to the school. Please join us in the gym if you would like to see what your child’s class has prepared. The presentations promise to be innovative. On Monday, Dec. 12, we will be traveling by bus to St. Mary’s Cathedral for a celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Please be sure to return your child’s permission slip if you have not already done so. Please use Advent to create memories of goodness with your children and to open doors of hope in their hearts. Lydia Collins, Directora
