    WHAT EXPERIENCED EDITORS DO

As we edit at all these levels, we will usuallymake significant changes to the content andwording of the paper. Good editors keep an

eye for the patterns of errors for that helpsthem if they are editing a very largedocument.Once they spot the patterns, they

develop techniques for spotting andcorrecting future instances of that pattern

    PROOF-READING

  • 8/3/2019 Editing and Proofreading 6

    16/30

Proof-reading is the final stage of theediting process, focussing on surface

errors such as misspellings and mistakesin grammar and punctuation. Proofreadingshould only be done after all the stages of

    editing revisions have been finished.

    STRATEGIES FOR PROOFREADING

    1. Make the process systematic and focused sothat we may catch maximum errors in the leastpossible time.

    2. Do not rely entirely on spellcheckers. They areuseful but have a limited dictionary.

    3. Grammar checkers too can be problematic as

they work with a limited number of rules.4. Proofread for only one kind of error at a time. if

you try and identify too many types of error at a

    time you might lose focus.

    5. Read slow.

    6. Read every word.

    7. Try reading out loud which forces you tosay every word.

    8. Separate the text into individualsentences.

    SOME UNCONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES USED BY

    PROOFREADERS

    1. Circle every punctuation mark. it forcesthem to look at every punctuation mark.

    2. Read the paper backwards. They start with

the last word on the page and work theirway to the beginning. This is done becausegrammar will not make any sense and thefocus will entirely be on the spelling.

    3. Use an opaque object like ruler to separatethe lines.
