Technologic

• Knowledge of system settings.

Basic Basic Equipment Equipment needed for needed for

editingediting•2 Decks- player and recorder.

•Monitor- ideal 1 for each deck.

•Edit Controller

Page 4: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

•Recorder

– Must be capable of insert editing ( this allows editor to get exact point where the frame starts.)

– Must be able to attach to an edit controller.

Page 5: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

•Player

– Must be able to attach to an edit controller.

•Edit Controller

– Is the “Brain of your decks and edit session.

– Controls machines that you are using.

– Enables editor to make accurate decisions.

– A simple edit controller will only control two decks. ( player & Recorder)

– An advanced controller will have control of switchers, multiple decks, special effect devices, Audiotape machines, and remember all of your edits. ( Grass Valley System)

•Edit Controller

– Edit controllers guide the mechanical functions of tape machine.( play, stop, rewind, etc.) to find and remember the exact edit points that have been selected. ( In or Out points )

– Two ways of finding these edit points are:

» By reading control track pulses

» By reading time code information

•Control Track Edit Control Track Edit Controllers.Controllers.

• Perform edits by count the frame pulses that are recorded on control track signal. When an edit point is selected, the controller will:

Back space from that edit point( referenced by the pulses.)

Start the machines and perform edits at the specified point.

Control Track Edit Control Track Edit Controllers Controllers

Disadvantages.Disadvantages.Control track editors, because they

are counting only pulses, have no reference to go back to if they miss a pulse. For this reason they are generally considered to be accurate to within only one or two frames.

Computerized Time Code Edit Controllers

• Read time code information

Page 11: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

Time Code

• Additional recorded information that can be recorded onto tape signal. This information provides each frame a specific address.

• Time code edit controllers use this address as reference.

Page 12: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

Advantages of Time Code Edit Controllers.

• Frame Accurate

• Faster

• Control several machines, Digital video effects units, perform transitions, and previews.

System Connections

• The Edit System is connected with each of the cables carrying the signals running directly from one machine to the other.

Page 14: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

System Connections

• For a simple copying system, each recorder machine will have the following connectors.

» Video IN and OUT

» Audio Ch 1 IN And OUT

» Audio Ch 2 IN and OUT

• The Player machine only needs OUT Connectors.

• The cables should run from the Audio and Video OUT connectors on the Player to the Audio and Video IN connectors of the Recorder.

Dub Cable• Transfers video information in a

component form. (What is component?)

• Recorder can receive a “Line” signal and “Dub” signal ( this can be selected in the front panel of deck)

• Dub signal provides better quality video signal.

• Dub signal does not go through video processing equipment.

Page 16: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

Component Video- Separates the Signal into

three • Y

• PB

• PR

Page 17: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

Y = Luminance SignalY =30% red + 59% green + 11% blue

• C = Chrominance Signal- PB-PRC = I Q Matrix

• Saturation = Amplitude of the I and Q signals

• Hue = Phase developed by the difference in amplitude between the I and Q signals

System connections? Setting up Monitor.

• To monitor editing, cables need to be run from recorder deck ( Video OUT) to monitor Video IN.

• If using several monitors for each deck, then cables will need to be run from each deck to respective monitors.

• Certain monitors have several inputs. You can use one monitor to check different sources.

Loop Through

When a signal is looped through a source.

Example: Send signal out of playback deck into Monitor, and out of monitor to recorder deck.

Page 21: Editing is Selective Copying Select what will be copied. Pick and Arrange sequences and shots together

Termination

• When looping signal through, the last source needs to be terminated.

• Can be done in two ways:» Using a Terminator-An external connector that can be

attached to the last Out.

» Built in Switch that connects to a 75 ohm resistor. When switch is activated the signal will be terminated.

• Monitors that have a single input connector will be automatically terminated with a built in 75 ohm resistor.
