Mathew Burt I PrincipalNgaji Gurrijin, Welcome to Term 3 as we continue through the Barrgana season and enjoy morning fog and dry easterly winds. I trust you all had a wonderful holiday break.During Term 3 our Year 10 students will commence with their course selections for 2020 so now is a good time for us all to reassess and update our goals for the rest of the year. The Year 10 course selections is a key moment for all students at this year level. It is the first time a student has the opportunity to make decisions about their future education and career pathways but it starts at the beginning of their high school journey. Past grades, attendance patterns and behaviour are all considered a part of the selection process in Year 10. Consequently demonstrating academic achievement and engagement in option courses during the lower school years is vital to establish a student for making future choices. Broome Senior High School provides exceptional educational and career development options for our students. One of the great strengths of our school is the diverse range of courses students have to select from in Years 11 and 12 and the opportunities available to them. From students who want to access direct entry into University, to those wishing to pursue Vocational training as well as students completing general education to follow their interests and skill development, there is a pathway to suit. As a parent, going through the Year 10 course selection process with your child can be confusing. There is a large amount of information to take in so I encourage you to maintain close contact with your child’s teachers and the school during this time to ensure you and your child make the best and most informed choices. To keep up to date on your child's performance you are encouraged, if you haven’t already, to make appointments for the parent-teacher interview night on Tuesday 6 August 2019. It is a fantastic opportunity to stay connected with your child’s teachers and their progress. I look forward to seeing you there. Gala Mabu.
PRINCIPAL'S PENKimberley Cup 2019Bree Watt I Head of Learning Area, Health and Phys Ed.
The Smarter Than Smoking Kimberley Cup sporting carnival was hosted by the school in the last week of Term Two. The carnival promotes physical activity for young people from regional and remote communities across the Kimberley region, by competing in a variety of sports such as AFL, Netball, Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. This year we introduced Girls AFLX and mixed soccer into the competition which proved very successful.
The number of secondary students participating grew from previous years with 11 Kimberley schools competing in the event travelling from as far as Wyndham, One Arm Point and La Grange. A special thank you and acknowledgement goes to the staff who coached the teams and trained them in the weeks leading up to this event; Shane Vujcich, Gaileen Clements, Julieka Stewart, Rebecca Boni, Rebecca Kevin, Tracey Evans, Ben Kenney, John Clark, Azhar Hamid, Kate Murrihy, Becky Gibson and Sam Alexeeff. Also thank you to Garnduwa for their assistance in umpiring throughout the week, to the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre staff for their support of the event and Healthways for their financial assistance to host the event. Congratulations and well done to all the students of Broome Senior High School who participated and represented the school.

2019 Country Week Wrap UpScott Beatty I Health and Phys. Ed. TeacherThe last week of Term 2 saw our biggest Country Week team head to Perth to compete in the Secondary Schools Country Week carnival. We entered six teams this year who participated in football, boys and girls volleyball, boys basketball, netball and dance. The Country Week experience is a high-level sporting event that the teams work hard to prepare for through training over two terms. Both the football and girls volleyball teams made the grand final with the football side coming away with the win. The netball and dance teams finished third overall which was also a fantastic effort. A huge thank you goes to the Country Week coaches; Ben De Meo, Olivia Mart, Brett Cameron, Matt Noble, Sascha Bragalia, Jacinta Bayliss and Scott Beatty. We would also like to acknowledge the kind support of the Kimberley Ports Authority, the Shire of Broome and the Lions Club of Broome. The students should be proud of how well they represented our school and community.A special congratulations to the following students on their awards:

Year 12 Sydney Summit Raya Sara I Broome Girls Academy Program CoordinatorDuring the recent school holidays, nine students from the Broome Girls Academy had the fantastic opportunity to attend the National Girls Academy Year 12 Sydney Summit, an event that attracted almost 200 students from all over Australia.
The Summit offered many leadership, cultural and aspiration building workshops, with inspirational speakers at each venue. It was an amazing experience for all the girls who travelled to Sydney, allowing them to meet other Girls Academy students and make new friends. The highlights were the Gala Dinner, Tribal Warrior cruise, Careers Expo and the Bangarra Dance Theatre.

We acknowledge the Yawuru people, the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we work and learn together
Goanna Park CampCaitlin Sawrey I Special Needs Education AssistantRecently several students and staff from the Special Education Needs Learning Area had the opportunity to attend the Goanna Park Adventure Camp.
The camp is held annually at Goanna Park which is located 90kms east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It caters for up to 24 children plus carers and volunteers. It aims to provide children with mild to moderate disability and disadvantage a unique experience away from their homes and daily routines in a place where they feel safe and secure. The students who attended this camp have come back to Broome with more determination, confidence, and independence. They pushed themselves in many ways by trying new activities such as abseiling, rock climbing and swimming in a wave pool. Often the students were pushed out of their comfort zones by taking risks and all while at the same time building on new friendships. They also enjoyed a trip to the Crocodylus Park where they got to hold wildlife, including snakes, birds and baby crocodiles. And thoroughly enjoyed a disco and talent quest night. Goanna Park Camp gave the students a chance to be themselves, and express their many successes.
TED Summit 2019Mat Burt I PrincipalI was thrilled to be accepted into Cohort 4 of TED-Ed Innovative Educators program earlier this year. The TED-Ed Innovative Educator program is a year-long professional development program that connects outstanding educators and administrators in K-12, university and non-traditional educational environments around the globe. During the first half of the program, I have been joining bi-monthly video calls for a guided TED Masterclass experience and to record a TED-style Talk. Also, I had the privilege of joining the TED Community at the TED Summit in Edinburgh in July. During the week-long summit, I was able to connect with the rest of my cohort and meet a range of wonderful and interesting people while learning about TED talks and hearing many inspiring ideas. The second half of the program will be focused on how I can best amplify the ideas of our teachers and students in my educational community. I look forward to bringing these experiences into the classroom.

Follow the Dream - Port Smith Camp 2019 Tim Gray I Follow the Dream CoordinatorThe end of Term 2 saw a group of intrepid Year 7 Follow the Dream students participate in a survival camp at Port Smith. On day one, students tested their patience when holding a fishing line and imagining a bite from a salmon. In one ten-minute period, those that were alert (and not shell collecting) landed four good-sized fish. Caitlyn “Long Cast” Cockram proved that a lack of height has nothing to do with fishing prowess as she managed to land two in successive casts.
An afternoon return to Port Smith was well-timed as all with energy (largely students, not staff) continued to explore the low tide flats of Port Smith Lagoon until the glowing sunset dimmed. Evening marshmallow toasting wrapped up a solid day of endeavour and the grey-nomad campers breathed a sigh of relief as the youngsters “crashed” at a reasonable hour. The Day two camp activities shifted to “extreme concentration” exercises which again involved holding a line and willing something to happen. Taj Lazic took his opportunity after a solid
hit to land the biggest salmon of the trip. All members of the trip burnt off energy on the final evening with an epic three-hour game of TTT. A staff vs students Nacho Sauce cooking competition was clearly won by the staff. Unfortunately for the students, their defeat meant they were left in charge of all vehicle cleaning upon return to Broome Senior High School. Thanks to Miss Raya (Broome Girl’s Academy) for allowing access to their personnel carrier. Thanks also to the three accompanying female staff for reminding Mr Gray when it was indeed time to stop fishing and relax in the sand.
