Mark 31 November to 6 December in your diary, as you don’t want to miss it! The Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Festival is the biggest festival for adaptive and inclusive sport and recreation in the state. Throughout the week there will be different locations at which you can pop in and try out a new sport, activity or explore a new facility. On 3 December, in Federation Square, you can try all the options for accessible and inclusive sport and recreation, and have the opportunity to talk to providers. If you’ve always wanted to try a certain sport or activity, keep an eye on the festival website (www.dsrf.org.au ) for POP IN Program updates, or if you just want more information on what options are available, then come down to Fed Square to get all the information you need. Try Before You RideOn 23 September, the TaxiServices Commission joinedvarious public transportoperators in the Try BeforeYou Ride Event at the BoxHill Interchange. Try Before You Ride is anannual event that allowsusers with disability theopportunity to boost theirconfidence by practicinghow to board and alight alow floor tram, bus, train andwheel chair accessible taxithat remain parked at theinterchange during theevent. Find more information about accessible taxi services acrossVictoria, vist the Taxi Services Commision website.

The Taxi Services Commission is a major community partner ofthe 2015 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Festival.

Wheelie Fit Boot Camp!Do you want to get fitter, stronger and more agile? Do you use aself­propelled wheelchair? Then join Wheelie Fit Boot Camp.

Score! launch in the WimmeraOne Wimmera family,Denise and her son Tom,couldn’t be more excited forthe arrival of Score! to theregion.

Tom, pictured centre with thebasketball, is already an accomplished sportsman, but Score!represents an opportunity for others to get active like him.

social sport.

With the main focus being on soccer, particpants will be able todevelop their sports skill, as well as grow life skills in confidenceand communication.

The training program will end with the Social Goal cup which is atournament to celebrate International Day of People with Disabilty.

Wheelchair sports power upThe Australian PowerchairFootball Nationals runs from4 to 11 October. TheVictorian team will beheading to NSW to competeagainst teams from acrossthe country and NewZealand. The third WorldCup will be coming up next year, with 26 countries represented.

Powerchair Football is one of only a few competitive team sportsavailable for people using power wheelchairs. Other sportsinclude balloon soccer, hockey and rugby league. The ElectricWheelchair Sports summer season starts again on 18 Octoberand it is a perfect way to be involved in a social but competitiveexperience, make new friends, build confidence and have fun.

Disability Self­Help Grants ­applications now openApplications are now open for the State Government’s Self­HelpGrants program, which supports people with a disability, theircarers and families.Grants of up to $10,000 are available to:

Strengthen the capacity of people with a disability to liveindependently in their own community and activelyparticipate in community activitiesSupport members to make informed decisions about theirown livesEncourage a network of community peer support andinformation exchange for people with a disability and theirfamilies/carersIncrease opportunities to provide information andeducation of people with a disability.

Grant funding is provided to cover a group’s general expensesand running costs, as well as minor works and equipment.
