Swimmer Sharlene Gardiner and tennis player Mitchell James recently competed in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Greece. See their stories on pages 4 and 5.

Over the weekend the news spread through the community of the passing of local historian and environmentalist Stan Tutt.Mr Tutt, who was aged 97, was well known for the valuable contribution he made to not just our local area but across the Sunshine Coast.He was a Greenie long before it was fashionable and was a founding member of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council as well as being on the foundation committee of the Landsborough Museum.In the Sunshine Coast Daily story on Monday – Mr Tutt was described as a true gentleman and a respected historian and having met him at a number of events at the Landsborough Museum over the years I would say ‘a True Gentleman’ is a really apt description.Even in his aging years he would make every effort to attend and

contribute to the activities he was invited to – and while he was a humble man not looking for recognition or attention, he was always happy to participate, not minding being photographed or making a comment.One thing that struck me from the first time I met him was the level of admiration from the other guests and the high regard in which he was held by all those in attendance, his passing is a sad loss for our community.In next week’s edition we will bring you a story about Mr Tutt - if you would like to contribute your comments please send them to [email protected]

Tower tussle to start againThe development application for a mobile phone tower at Landsborough has been forced back to the consultation phase.The original application failed to recognise that the area was within a designated ‘wetland management area’, meaning that the process under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 was not properly followed.As a consequence, the community consultation period needed to be 30 days rather than the 15 days the original period ran for.The consultation period now runs from July 11 until August 22, inclusive of these dates.Letters were sent to the all those who submitted comments as part of the previous consultation period. Unfortunately, the letters may have stated that the consultation period was July 5 until August 15, but an administrative error meant that this notification was wrong, and another notification had to be sent to correct the previous one.Twenty seven community submissions were originally submitted by local residents, all objecting to the mobile phone tower development.The resident objections included concerns that the tower would exceed height restrictions; it wouldn’t be far enough from schools and child care facilities; health concerns relating to radiation from the tower; reduction of land values; possible interference with television

reception; diminishing the tourism/historic amenity of the town; and that the area would be much better suited to residential zoning.

Of the 27 submissions, 12 were rejected by Council as ‘Not Properly Made’.

The submissions which were accepted by Council do not have to be resubmitted as part of the latest consultation phase, as they will be carried over.

However, those people whose submissions were rejected will have to resubmit them within the time frame and in the correct manner.

Unfortunately, one of these rejected submissions was the 23 page petition containing 370 signatures of people objecting to the development.

For a submission to be properly made, it must:

• State your full name• Include your residential or business address• Be addressed to ‘The Assessment Manager’• Contain specific grounds for the objection• Be signed with a signature• Be submitted within the consultation period

Submissions can be posted, hand delivered at a Customer Service Centre or emailed. However, an emailed submission must be a scan of the submission including the written signature.

I was proud of myself and representing Australia made it more special,” he said.Other highlights included meeting athletes from other countries and playing on centre court. “I was shaking,” Mitchell admitted.His next goal is to play in the Australian Open in January, 2012.

Stepping Out Podiatry talks about

Bunion deformities are one of the most common conditions that we see as Podiatrists. A ‘bunion’ is the common term used to described a painful big toe joint where the big toe moves inward towards the second toe and a bony growth develops on the middle surface of the joint.This condition is more common in those with flat feet, collapsed arches or feet that pronate excessively (roll inward). If the feet are excessively pronated, the big toe joint is not able to operate properly therefore more stress is placed on other joints. Over time this can cause a build up of calcification (bunion development), ankle weakness, knee or back discomfort. Other factors that can contribute to the formation of this deformity are hereditary factors (genetics) such as the length and shape of the metatarsal bone, constrictive footwear and systemic diseases (such as Rheumatoid arthritis)

The treatment will be determined by the cause of the bunions, therefore an assessment of your hips, knees and feet is needed to identify which treatment will have the best outcome for you. A qualified podiatrist can offer treatments such as stretching programs (to encourage the correct movement of bones and muscles), intrinsic foot muscle strengthening (to stretch out shortened ligaments and muscles due to the bunion) and footwear advise (incorrect footwear choices will encourage bunion formation). Corrective insoles (orthotics) may be a long term treatment option to provide the correct position of the foot, which in turn may prevent further progression of this painful joint deformity.

Long time readers of GCNews will have seen the many swimming triumphs of Landsborough special Olympian swimmer Sharlene Gardiner.

Sharlene was determined to bring home a gold medal from the Special Olympics in Greece this year – and her determination paid off; she came home with a Gold, a Silver and two Bronze medals.

When she came into the office to show off her gold medal the excitement was written all over her face – and the pride in her dad Ray’s eye was also really obvious.

Sharlene competed in four events, taking out a medal in each of them - gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 400m freestyle and 4 x 100m relay and a bronze in the 800m freestyle. Special Olympian swimmer Sharlene Gardiner

Glasshouse writer wins

Glasshouse resident, Chris Magee, recently won the U3A Writing Competition First Prize for her short story, ‘The Aisle’, in the fiction category.

The judges agreed that her story was a significantly clear winner and will be included in the next volume of collected works published by U3A. Chris is a former thespian with several stage plays to her credit and who has always been inclined to ‘act out’ the stories that her experience and imagination combine. These are stories that tug at your heartstrings or tweak your emotions. Modest by nature, Chris decided to enter the competition after joining a beginners’ class of aspiring writers. She says that comments on her work by other class members gave her the confidence to enter her story but she was both surprised and excited by her success. She tells us that she now intends to complete her first novel based on her social and cultural experiences overseas.

And she took out the bronze medal after attending the opening ceremony and finally getting back to the accommodation very late and only on two hours sleep, so she has been left wondering what could she have done if she got proper rest the night before?This is Sharlene’s second Special Olympics, four years ago she went to Shanghai where she completed in three events and came back with a silver and a gold medal, so with four more medals to add to the collection she is thinking of changing pace.Sharlene is now going to turn her attention to longer distance swimming and she is looking to break the world record in 1500m freestyle.With the determination she has – I wouldn’t be surprised to have her pop into the office to let us know sometime soon.Congratulations golden girl from all of your fans.

Bob Abbot not standing for mayor in 2012Speaking in front of gathered media outside Sunshine Coast Council offices in Nambour last week, Bob Abbot announced he will not contest the position of mayor with Sunshine Coast Council in the next local government elections to be held in March 2012.

A veteran of 30 years in local government and the last three as mayor of Sunshine Coast Council, Bob has been the first mayor of the fourth largest regional council in Australia.Cr Abbot said he wanted to make his intentions known well before the lead into the local government elections next year.“I’ve long followed a common sense approach and feel that it will soon be time to move on with the next stage of my life. However, for the next eight months I will remain as passionate and committed as ever to serving the people of the Sunshine Coast,” Bob said.

“When I was elected as mayor in 2008, I was determined to lay a foundation for the Sunshine Coast during the first four to six years of local government and I’m proud to say we have done that during our first term as a new council. The Financial Plan and the Community Plan and a wide range of strategies and policies are in place, and the Town Plan is ready for consultation,” he added.Bob said he will continue to work hard on delivering a service oriented council not a regulatory or compliance based one.“The challenge for the mayor and councillors of the next Sunshine Coast Council will be to balance our population and economic development and maintaining a sustainable fabric that will support the coast well into the future,” Bob concluded.Division one Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz said the mayor has made the decision to leave public office, based on lifestyle, relationships and family reasons.“He also believed after serving the community and leading the three former councils through the challenging time of amalgamation that he had given the sunshine coast region a solid foundation for the future.“My own decision to leave public office next March is the right one. Community boosted by Council grantsCommunity groups across the region have received a major boost from Sunshine Coast Council’s Grants Program after Council recently endorsed more than $700,000 in funding for 98 projects. Several of the successful grant recipients include UCA-Glasshouse Country Congregation for $7,500.00 for Glasshouse Country Combined Churches Community Carols by Candlelight; the Landsborough Area Community Assoc. Inc, trading as Morris House Neighbourhood Centre for $7,409.00 for purchase of a photocopier; Beerwah and District Junior Rugby League Inc. received $3,900.00 for upgrading of their Club house.The Council assesses major grant rounds twice a year and grants officers are available on the phone to assist applicants to develop their projects and to write applications. The next major and minor grant round closes on September 1. Council also offers emergency grants and individual grants, which are open all year. People power have a winBy Lea ParkesCouncil has bent to the will of the people following a public meeting last Friday afternoon in the new car park at Glass House Mountains. The meeting brought together plenty of cranky local business owners along with numerous unhappy residents who were keen to have their concerns heard.While Division 1 councillor, Cr Grosskreutz is currently on leave and did not attend the meeting, on Monday morning she contacted the meeting organiser, Ms Joan Tucker, Glass House Post Office, to advise that Council has decided have decided to make changes to some aspects of the original design.There were numerous individual issues raised at the meeting. The key concerns were that the car parks were too short and that the turning area is too shallow to accommodate larger vehicles. Other issues included the areas of footpath that are 6m deep, the garden beds makng it difficult for drivers to access the footpath, and the caravan bay being on the wrong side of the road and too small. However Ms Tucker said that the goal of the meeting was to get Council to stop work immediately and for a committee of business people and residents to be formed to work with the design planners to make the changes required to meet the needs of the town.Emotions ran high at the meeting and the combined dissatisfaction of the 60 or so attendees was firmly targeted at the solo Council representative sent along to attend the meeting.

The Council engineer stayed calm and polite throughout the barrage of complaints, repeating the same two comments – that the designs met minimum Australian Standards and that he would take back the group’s concerns to Council.Well the group must have got their point across loud and clear, as the message definitely got back to the Council decision-makers.Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce President Kel McNamara was at the meeting on behalf of the Chamber throwing his support behind the frustrated local business owners."Without a doubt the car park just doesn’t work. I brought my work vehicle down on Thursday night to see for myself and clearly these car spaces are unusable,” he said.Ms Tucker said this is a great first step and she is cautiously optimistic that a meeting will go ahead on Tuesday to discuss Councils proposed changes to the design.GCNews will keep readers up to date on how the situation progresses.


Paddle out for Whales – Great ResultContributed by Annemarie of WILD World RecordsHundreds of people recently travelled to Hervey Bay to show their support for whale conservation including Beerwah State High School and Glass House Mountains students and Sea Shepherd Sunshine Coast volunteers. Local wildlife advocate Bob Irwin opened the event with a passionate message and call out for Australians to take action against cruelty and to protect and save all our ocean creatures.We made history with our friends Vicki and Amanda from Paddle Out by recording the first WILD World Record. A second WILD record was achieved for the Largest Paddle Out Human Circle for whale conservation.The event included tree planting to reduce the environmental footprint of activities; all plants were donated by friends and collaborative partners at the Fraser Coast Council.

Belly dancers danced the dugong rock, participants warmed up with Zumba on the beach and juggler The Great Scott entertained the crowd. Sunshine Coast local band ‘Kindred’ played and kindly donated all proceeds of their music sales to the Paddle Out for whales cause.Over 600 participants braved the chilly water and Paddled Out to form the circle of support. Supporters on the shore paddled their toes and placed flowers on the water in memory of whales that have been killed during whale hunting season. The event is set to grow with the Paddle Out crew planning more fun and even bigger support next year!WILD World Records is set to record and reward more WILD records in the coming weeks and months starting with Australia’s BIG things! The official launch of WILD World Records will be in spring this year. We will host a WILD Record attempt as part of September’s Wattle Day Celebrations. Local artists shortlisted in national awardsRenowned artists, ceramicist Johanna de Maine (Landsborough) and painter Loretta Noonan (Candle Mountain) have been shortlisted in respect to two prestigious national awards here on the coast. Johanna for the Noosa Gallery Travelling Scholarship (Noosa Regional Art Gallery) and Loretta, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (Caloundra Regional Art Gallery).Loretta recently gave a talk at Caloundra Regional Art Gallery’s ‘Perfect Blend’ session where the nationally acclaimed SCAP Prize exhibition is showcasing the 40 shortlisted artists from some 400 entries. Glenda and Robyn, two of our local heroes attend BSS each week supporting the development of reading with Year 2 students. Looking for community parentsCommunity Parents are trained volunteers working with families in Caloundra and the Hinterland, supported by Family Support Workers. Caloundra Community Centre has worked with many volunteers since 1993 as part of its Family Support Program. We are seeking people who have some time to spare and a caring, non-critical nature. This volunteer opportunity is open to both men and women of all ages.Supporting families through times of stress and change is not new. Traditionally, relatives and neighbours assisted where possible and extended families were commonplace. In recent times however, families have become more mobile, often relocating to another city or state and leaving extended family or friendship networks behind. When difficulties arise, the absence of extended family or friends is felt most strongly.Volunteers with the Family Support Program are provided with training and a great opportunity to learn new skills, have fun and become part of an enthusiastic, committed team.

The Family Support Program has played a very important role in the lives of many families in Caloundra and Hinterland communities. Family support volunteers provide emotional and practical support at times of stress and pressure, visiting families and providing supportive telephone contact. Volunteers gain from their experience in many ways including personal satisfaction, learning new skills and increased understanding of themselves. Existing volunteers frequently comment that they believe the support they offer to families is very worthwhile and that it really makes a difference to people’s lives.

If you have a day a week to spare and you would be interested in supporting a local family then contact either Kim on 5491 4511 or Wendy on 5429 6766 for more information. An initial training course will be conducted on August 4 at Caloundra Community Centre with monthly short training sessions offered afterwards. By stepping up and supporting children less fortunate than your own, you might find a spring in your step brought about by the knowledge you have helped someone.The ‘Shoes and Socks 4 Kids Program’ is helping to warm underprivileged school children’s feet this winter so they will be in better shape to learn and live towards a better future.Pauline Preston, Managing Director of ‘The Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation’ who are heading up the program says, “we have true consultation with every primary school, speaking directly to them to ascertain the number of students who genuinely have no footwear or who can only afford to come to school in thongs or disintegrating shoes.”A recent survey conducted by the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation (BF4KF) has revealed 864 Sunshine Coast Primary School children currently attend school with no shoes or sub-standard shoes that are falling to pieces.“These are not statistics,” said BF4KF spokesperson, Community Advisor and local mum Rose Houston. “These are real numbers about real Sunshine Coast children in need.“We are simply staggered to hear the sheer volume of numbers and urge anyone who can, to donate to our newly launched ‘Shoes and Socks 4

Kids’ program’, which provides free, quality leather BATA shoes and three pairs of Underworks socks to kids in need delivered for free to the school through the partnership with Star Track Express. So far, they have raised enough to help 279 of the 864 local kids in need,” she said.It costs just $29.95 to give one child a brand new pair of premium BATA lace-up, leather school shoes and three pairs of Underworks socks delivered free to schools. Landsborough legal servicesResidents have been taking advantage of the free legal services that has been operating for over two years in Landsborough. The Outreach community legal service is run by the Suncoast Community Legal Service Inc – a not-for-profit organisation with a 27 year history of providing quality free legal advice to the Sunshine Coast region. The fortnightly service is offered on Monday evenings and provides 15 minute ‘legal

advice and referral’ appointments on general and family law. Prior bookings are essential by calling 5443 7827. The service is not means tested but aims to help people needing legal advice who are ‘in need’ or ‘at a disadvantage’. Growing up with a family owned swimming school would certainly have its advantages. In fact, Jessie Thomson, 19, from Glass House Mountains credits it with helping her land a job as a lifeguard at Disney World in Florida, America. Jessie flew out on July 15 for a six month contract.Jessie was studying for her Diploma in Fitness at Mooloolaba TAFE when she heard Disney World representatives were coming to do a presentation and interviews for various positions.

“I got told by one of my teachers because she knew I wanted to travel. They interviewed me and three weeks later I was told I got the job,” Jessie said.“I needed a good swimming background, that’s about it. It was pretty easy to get the job, but the process to get there was a bit more difficult. I had to get a new passport, I had to fly to Sydney to get my Visa - there’s so many things you have to get for your Visa - and then you have to go do an interview in Sydney so they can get your fingerprints. And there’s a lot of different fees you have to pay,” she said.Jessie has her Bronze Medallion and CPR qualifications but will still have to pass a test when she arrives. “I’ll have to show that I can swim two hundred metres, pick up weights off the bottom of the pool and tread water with my hands out of the water for two minutes,” she said.There is so much she is looking forward to, including meeting new people and being in a different culture. "It’s not that much different but it’s different from this area here. And having the opportunity to travel afterwards and see different things,” said Jessie.Free entry anytime and free transport within Disney World means she will be experiencing everything this great theme park has to offer. “I’ve always wanted to go to Disney World,” she said.Jessie knows having Disney World on her resume will open many doors. “The opportunity is just awesome. You also get the opportunity to study over there for free, any of the Disney topics. So having worked at Disney World on my resume is going to appeal to anyone if I want to work anywhere else in the world.”

Breaking through the barriers ‘Breaking Through the Barriers’ is a 10 week program that has been developed to support young women to enrich their lives, through building on existing strengths, developing new skills, and equipping them with the knowledge and understanding to create positive influences on others. The personal benefits of the program include enhanced self confidence and self esteem, better decision making skills, improved ability to problem solve, a greater sense of self worth, heightened self awareness, and the opportunity to enhance communication skills and foster healthier relationships.This is a free program for young pregnant women and young mums up to 25 years of age and will run from Thursday, August 11 from 12.30pm - 2.30pm every week for 10 weeks at the Beerwah Community Centre (BADYACC), Roberts Road Beerwah. Workmen arrived with their trucks at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School to move the Old St Paul’s church building from the campus. It had been donated to the Caboolture Historical Village. The church, originally on Haskin Street, moved to the school site on Smiths Road in April, 1985. It reopened for worship services in September that year, after the roof had been removed and restored.Once at Smiths Road, it served various functions, as a church, a classroom, a teacher’s aide room, and finally as a uniform shop for many years.The roof was removed again, and transported to the Caboolture Historical Village. The remainder of the church building was transported via truck late one evening.Comments on the St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School facebook page reflected memories that the school community held about the old church.The area where the building sat will be grassed over in the short term, prior to works commencing on the St Paul’s Pre-Prep, set to commence in 2013.

The GCCC High School Cheer team

After only five months of practice, 45 energetic students from Glasshouse Country Christian College entered the World Cup Cheer and Dance Championships at the Logan Metro Sports Complex. The GCCC teams went to their second competition with excitement and enthusiasm and left with an armload of trophies and a truckload of smiles.The GCCC High School Cheer team performed a perfect routine and danced, somersaulted, performed stunts and back-flipped their way into first place. The GCCC Primary team, Open Cheer Duo and Junior Dance Duos danced with synchronisation and awesome energy to finish a very close second. The High School Stunt team executed a flawless skilful routine to be placed a strong third. In order for the whole College to share in their achievement, the cheer teams put on dynamic demonstrations on the GCCC oval the week after the competition. A hushed awe fell over the students as they watched the girls perform fantastic feats of flexibility, balance and rhythm. The Cheer teams’ manager, Mrs Christine Scott, was thrilled at how far the girls had come in such a short time. “The girls are moving from strength to strength and their enjoyment is showing in their routine,” she said.

Octogenarian CelebrationSubmitted by Una RobinsonOn July 13, John Cruickshank celebrated becoming an octogenarian with friends and family. Many friends gathered at the Glasshouse Mountains RSL to help John celebrate this landmark birthday and a gathering with family was also taking place. Katherine Griffin made and beautifully decorated John’s 80th birthday cake which was shared by all present.

John was born in Mudgee to a Scottish father and English mother and resides with his wife Rita in Glass House Mountains where both are actively involved in supporting various community organisations.

John grew up on a farm and worked on various farms in NSW and QLD at times during very some difficult periods before retiring and undertaking extensive travelling with Rita in their motorhome with many trips still being planned and taken. John and Rita have reared three children and now have several grandchildren.

John is also well known for his quality craftsmanship in woodwork and handy items are made which his grandchildren often receive as gifts.

John joined Lions Club International as a charter member of Dawson Valley Lions Club in September 1967 and he has held high profile positions in Lions Districts, travelled overseas to International Conventions in Montreal, Hawaii, Hong Kong, and 1991 in Brisbane, as well as been actively involved in his Lions clubs over the years. He currently retains his membership with the Beerwah Lions Club where he has just completed a two year stint as the club Bulletin Editor. Congratulations and happy birthday to John.

Caloundra Family History Research Inc.Contributed Roz KussThe University of Queensland’s Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, Dr Jon Prangnell, spoke at the general meeting of the Caloundra Family History group on Thursday, June 16. His presentation was on his team’s excavation in 2003 at Paradise, the 19th century gold mining town in the Burnett River Valley, to fulfil a government contract prior to the construction of the Paradise Dam. The lower parts of the town, not far from Biggenden, were drowned when the dam was completed in November 2005.Reef gold was mined at Paradise after discovery by the Allen brothers in the 1880’s and on completion of the dam the gold shafts, some 60ft deep, were injected with concrete.The town’s magistrate also owned the crushing plant. Gold had made James McGhie a very rich man, firstly in New Zealand, then Ballarat and Gympie. He set up a large timber milling operation at Elanda Point, Lake Cootharaba which he sold to become the largest land holder in Paradise. His final resting place is the Gympie cemetery.Dr Prangnell, now President of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology was a great presenter with wonderful audience rapport, and he accepted an invitation to return in 2012.The group’s rooms and library are open for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.00pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm.The guest speaker at the next general meeting on July 21, will be Sunshine Coast local, Mr Bob Buick. Bob was a veteran of the Battle of Long Tan which took place in August 1966, and his talk will outline arrangements made for the 45th Anniversary of the battle.All activities conducted by the group are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. Community Group UpdatesQCWA – Beerwah BranchContributed by Del DavisThe Annual Meeting of QCWA Beerwah Branch was held last week and Donna-Kay Donovan was elected as the President for the coming year. Members will be supporting her for the first big event in her term, by holding the much anticipated Garden Party. After the weekend’s rain, Rita Cruickshank’s garden will be a picture. There will be plenty of parking and a great day to be outdoors on a winter’s day. Entry is $5.00 when the gate opens at 9.30am and a tasty morning tea will be available. Wear your ‘Brightest Outfit’ and enjoy the entertainment, have another cuppa, look at the stalls, buy a ticket in the mulitdraw raffle, and enjoy soup,

sandwiches or strawberries / cream for lunch. Last year’s event was a talking point for weeks and this one will not be a disappointment either. Profits are earmarked for the Annual Bursaries to both local high schools.Stage one of the meeting room upkeep has the new guttering completed. Next will be the paint job.Due to some members prior commitments, future branch meetings will follow the monthly ‘Hoy’ which is a fun morning where the branch supplies all grocery prizes as a service to the local community for locals to get out of the house and attend. It starts at 9.00am, the next one is August 2. So ladies please bring a bite to eat for yourself and attend the branch monthly meeting commencing at 11.30am.

What a Good SamaritanI went shopping at Gone Bonkers in Beerwah late on Monday, July 9. Only an hour later I had a knock on the door and it was the gentleman that owns the shop.He asked if I was missing anything and I automatically said ‘my iPhone?’ To my surprise I had left my phone in the shop and he had been so kind and thoughtful to look in my phone and contacted a family member to get my address.I’m pretty sure he may have even shut the shop early in order to get my phone back to me ASAP!There are not many people in this world who would still go out of their way for a complete stranger!So I am dobbing in a good Samaritan, as a simple ‘thank you’ will never express how truly grateful and appreciative I am. Also, it’s good to know that not everyone thinks with the attitude ‘finders ... keepers’.

Unity Water decision - no community consultation Sunshine Coast Council has made the decision to leave control of water with Unity Water.LACA Inc believes that this decision should not have been made without community consultation. Previously water was under the control of CALAQUA which operated efficiently and was cost effective for ratepayers. With the price of water set to rise yet again we believe that having council in control would create local accountability, less overheads and more realistic prices. The structure of Unity Water means that ratepayers are paying for board members, CEO etc which means that these all have to be paid out of water charges. Removing this structure and returning to council control would eliminate these costs. We believe that no ratepayers have benefited from having Unity Water in control of this essential commodity. As the SCC is one of the two major shareholders in Unity Water, the council must take responsibility for decisions made by their appointed directors and must eventually justify these exorbitant costs currently charged by Unity Water. In this country the company shareholders have the final vote.

Re: the on-going saga of the proposed mobile phone tower in LandsboroughAfter receiving a letter from Aurecon saying the submission period had restarted and was now 5/7/11 to 15/8/11, the development sign was found to say the period was from 11/7/11 to 22/8/11. When council was contacted, it was stated that ‘the consultant had made another mistake’ and the dates on the sign were correct and another letter would be sent.We have checked the SCC web site and all the submissions that were delivered on time are still listed as improperly made due to being late. Except one, which was submitted along with three others from the same family. Three were properly made, one was not. This one has now been amended to read properly made. After complaining about this to a SCC officer, why are the others not amended?One resident, along with LACA Inc. wrote a separate letter to Cr McKay and Cr Grosskreutz asking for support when the development came before council. These were in separate envelopes, addressed to the councillors. The letters and the copy of the petition addressed to Cr McKay have been added to the submissions and deemed improperly made due to being late and the one from LACA Inc was ‘late and was a duplicate’. These letters and copy of the petition were not intended to be submissions - they were to ask for support from our councillors. The letter and copy of the petition sent to Cr Grosskreutz was not added to the submissions, as was correct. We have received an acknowledgement letter from Cr Grosskreutz but nothing from Cr McKay.All residents who submitted objections should receive a letter from council which will say if their submission was properly made or not. If the reason for rejection was that it was late, (when it was not) we encourage people to contact council to have the mistakes rectified. Residents should NOT have to re-submit due to council incompetence. Please make sure you contact council before the end of the submission period, 22/8/11 and make sure you receive a letter from council saying the amendment has been made. Residents can check the status of all submissions on the council web site - www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au go to pd online then pd online again and put in the development number MCU11/0058 then click on search then click on show. A complete list of information relating to the development will appear, including all submissions and their status.

Where is the balance?If there’s a balance between commerce and society, I don’t think we’ve found it.I know you had a number of people in the paper a week or two ago saying good things about the changes in Glass House village but I haven’t spoken to one single other person who is in favour. Quite the opposite – I have heard a number of conversations around the neighbourhood and the shops questioning the worth of spending all that money - and the money on that ugly, useless 'entry statement' which looks like something out of 2001 (the movie) and achieves nothing we need. Those things are luxuries.We could have fixed the traffic issues in the village with better signs and arrows painted on the road. The Glass House traffic flow was part of what made Glass House individual. Why on earth would people want to make Glass House like West End or Bulimba when people from those suburbs were coming here to visit because we were a refreshing change? Many of us live here by choice because we love Glass House, not Bulimba, not West End, but Glass House with all its flavour and individual quirks and beauty with lovely, friendly, polite, accepting, country/hinterland people. We do not need our village homogenised into a skim milk latte with or without cinnamon sprinkle.But, the overwhelming thing I have heard said is that people are asking why on earth are we spending our scarce money on cosmetics when we have absolutely nothing in town for young people?Once kids outgrow the park at the Information Centre there is nothing for them to do. Most of the new houses have been bought by families with kids – many of them currently primary school aged. At present they are pretty well behaved when you see groups of boys at the shops on a Saturday afternoon – these are good kids at present. We want them to stay that way. We need to help them to continue to grow up that way. If you read Brett Hay’s letter of last week, and from our own experiences along Coonowrin Road, that’s already not the case after dark.In five years time we are going to have a large population of bored teenagers and that is a recipe for trouble.If you want to see that future just have a look at Nerang – a Gold Coast Hinterland town with a large population of young people with nothing to do. Read the comments in this week’s GCNews (page 7) from the people in Beerwah with so many of them talking about needing something for their young people.We could have built something for the kid’s futures with those million-odd bucks, maybe a BMX track, and a skate bowl and a basketball half court – maybe on the spare ground near the sportsground. It would be far enough from the railway station to discourage too many visiting riff-raff but easy enough to get to for our bike riding youngies. Maybe they would be attracted by the sports they see on the playing fields. I don’t know, I don’t claim to have all the answers, but there are a heap of things we could have done with all that money which would have helped keep our town safe and rich in personality.We need to look after the people we have and our future but not sell Glass House short. I see Beerwah is getting a Workshop for community minded people to help build Beerwah (page 4 this week) – when do we get one? Preferably not on a Thursday morning when half of us are working.

Cloud formations were a major factor in the depth of colour and interest in each picture and the different colours reflected in the water was just magic.Thinking outside the square, one ‘different’ yet quite pleasing picture of the sunset was taken by turning around and taking the picture reflected in the windows of the house - something you might like to try.This picture was taken at 6.45pm with a Panasonic Lumix, camera set on simple (auto) mode.

Playing up in BeerwahA new playground facility has been installed by the Sunshine Coast Council at Caralan Way Park in Beerwah.Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said that the playground was an exciting and usable facility for all local residents and was the result of a request from a local family.“The new playground really is a terrific addition to this picturesque park. There are plenty of grassed areas for people to bring their picnic blankets and for the park to become a social gathering space,” she said.“The playground is designed for children two to 12 years of age and includes a double swing as this is generally the first piece of equipment that children gravitate towards, plus they are a good item for learning balance,” she said.

“We have incorporated a range of play equipment in order to develop other learning abilities such as sliding, climbing, spinning and rocking,” she said.All council’s playgrounds are designed and installed to meet compliance with Australian Standards.

Mellum Street and Myla Road, Landsborough Gravel Road Sealing - Council is committed to renewing transport infrastructure across the region and as part of that obligation, has sealed 13 gravel roads this financial year with a further 44 currently under construction.Work will commence to bitumen seal the northern gravel road section of Myla Road Landsborough (August 1) and Mellum Street (July 18). The planned upgrade will benefit adjacent residents by extending the existing sealed road and suppressing dust on the road.Work for both roads will include: additional pavement gravel to reshape the existing road, a two coat bitumen seal and adjustment of the surface drainage. During construction, council will endeavour to avoid the disturbance of large and established trees.Rates notices due out any day - There has been no increase in key levies such as Environment, Public Transport, Tourism and Heritage, and the increase in general rate revenue has been kept below inflation at 3.5 per cent. Over many years your Council has been replacing these structures as they reach the end of their economic life, and are unable to sustain the traffic volumes. In this year’s budget our Division will see another four bridges replaced at a total cost of $1.7 million dollars. The bridges to be replaced are; River Road Peachester, Meyricks Road Glass House Mountains, Fisher Road, Peachester and Roys Road number 4, Beerwah.Council has also programmed the replacement of Tower Lane bridge in Beerwah and Hodgens bridge in Peachester for the following 2012/2013 years budget, which I would expect all new Division 1 candidates to keep their eye on, so that they don't slip backwards in future. These bridges cost just under $1 million dollars for both.

In spring this lovely shrub comes alive with a mass flowering of pink/purple flowers. It is best planted in semi shade to full sun and benefits from pruning to maintain a more compact shape. It grows approximately 2m x 2m in a garden situation. It makes a great addition to a native planting or traditional cottage garden.

Hello again, it is a few months since we last had a chat about our broms.For those of you who have ventured out you would have had feast of bromeliads at the shows and expos in south east Queensland.

We talked about Bromeliad Vriesea previously and I would like to visit the Vriesea genus again, this time looking at the foliage Vriesea.

Vriesea fosteriana is a truly magnificent plant. It is a native of Brazil and amazingly was only discovered in 1940.The native habitat is around 1000 m above sea level, which explains their relative toughness.The Vriesea fosteriana cultivar ‘Red Chestnut’ is one of the numerous hybrids which has been made from this species. This superb hybrid has much redder banding than the species.Vrieseas grow under various light conditions but moderate light would be the best for most species available for cultivation. This, together with good air circulation, is necessary to grow these plants successfully.It is believed that air movement with Vriesea cannot be over-emphasised as the secret to growing healthy plants.The photo (top right) shows a family of bromeliads with Vrieseas of various species of

both those grown for their foliage and those grown for their flower. The density of this plant population is far from acceptable, but the balance of shade, light and airflow has provided a very suitable environment in this instance.In order to determine the correct amount of light, a simple method is to hold your hand about 30 cm above the surface you have selected to position the plants and see what shadow is produced. This should be done on a bright, sunny day at about 12.00noon.Bright light will produce a very well defined shadow showing a clean outline of your hand.Moderate light produces a good shadow but with fuzzy or hazy outline.Low light will produce an indistinct shadow and possibly no outline at all.We will continue to expand on the growing conditions for this genus next time.

Hinterland gem help put Beerwah on the map

This event is an annual fundraiser for the chaplaincy at Beerwah State High School.On the day, 76 players rocked up to play in teams of four. The response from players was that the day was superb and all had a great time. Setting her sights on goldJade Iversen has only been ice-skating for just over a year but the Year 6 student at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School has already won a silver medal, and is aiming for gold at her next competition.“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Jade said, “so it was such a surprise to get the silver medal in my very first competition!”Jade was part of a team of eight who competed in Synchronised Ice Skating at the Acacia Ridge Ice Skating Competition on June 25. The others had been ice-skating for longer, and some had competed before.Jade, travels to Boondall three times a week to skate. On Mondays she has individual training with her coach, on Thursdays she skates in ‘Aussie Skate’, and every Saturday morning is the two-hour training session with the team.“I love it!” Jade said. “It’s so much fun!”Jade and her team have now made it through to the Boondall Ice Skating Competition coming up at the end of term. What do angels dream of?I was out shopping the other day trying to find my mum one of those impossible ‘what do I buy my mother presents?’ when I noticed just how many angels I could have brought her.There were angel statues, angel fridge magnets, and angel figurines, about the only sort of angel I didn’t see was an angel ash tray.It got me thinking about angels. And in one of those profound moments one has in a gift store, I wondered if we dream of angels, what do angels dream of? Since we give angels such high stature, surely, if in fact they do dream their dreams would be important and significant.As a Christian my instant response was to think about bible verses that talk about angels, I thought of 1 Peter (chapter one for those who are interested looking it up). In this section of the bible, the apostle Peter starts talking about the salvation of our souls and he talks about how the Old Testament prophets predicted how God would achieve it. The prophets gave lots of clues. They mentioned the fact that God would save our souls at a certain time and in a certain place. They predicted that God would do it through a particular person who would suffer and then later be glorified. But that’s all the prophet’s knew.Peter mentions how the angels reading all these predictions strained to understand who and when this would be fulfilled.The word Peter uses gives the idea of angels straining on their tippie toes peering over the fence hoping to get a glimpse of the answer - hoping to maybe see how God is going to save our souls.

That was what angels used to dream about. But Peter says that now the angels have got the answer. All that peering, dreaming, imagining, wondering and questioning stopped when Jesus came to earth. At last even the angels had an answer. God was going to save our souls by sending Jesus. If you know his story you know how Jesus suffered by being executed as a common criminal but was later glorified by God by rising from the dead and going back to heaven where He is now the ultimate ruler over everything.So what has it got to do with us? Two main things. Firstly, it shows us just how important Jesus is, if Jesus is the fulfilment angels dream about then He must be very important.Secondly, the wonderful privilege that is ours. All the angels could do is dream, but we as Christians, because we know Jesus - because God has saved our souls - we are living the angel’s dream.So let me encourage you today. If you have never lived the dream then today is a good day for you. Today you can live the dream that angels can only dream about, you can do that by allowing Jesus to save your soul.
