Inside This Issue
Greetings OHCA,
Have you recovered yet from the Easter Egg hunt? Wasn't that great fun? We got some lovely pictures Sunday (I am going to have them posted soon!) and look forward to more at our next event- the second quarterly membership meeting on Sun-day, April 26, 2015 at 6:00pm at the home of Paul & Bernice Bonner, 6906 Oakridge. We have a good speaker lined up and our regular quar-terly reports to keep you abreast of the neighborhoods happenings.
Please bring your favorite salad and/or dessert with its recipe, if you could please, to share with everyone who wants it, like we did last year.
We have some wonderful happenings coming up the remainder of the year! For our July 26th quarterly membership meeting, Bob and I are planning to have the event at our home and Bob is making plans to make it a wine, cheese and fruit event! He wants to get a wine expert to come speak on the different wines, so be sure to mark your calendars! Then we have National Night Out-location and activities TBA and then our Holiday River Cruise or maybe something else "Christmasy" (give us your suggestions-call Bob!). Anyway, it's going to be a great year! Participate! Volunteer!
Bob and I won't be able to make the event April 26th, so please help out by volunteering - call Lance Leone, our VP, to lend your help! He will be standing in for me.

OHCA Neighbors,
I want to personally thank all of the volunteers who
helped to make our egg hunt fun for the children. A
special thanks to Israel & Cynthia Pena for
all of their behind-the-scenes work! Among the
many things they did, they got 2 piñatas this year
and the kids loved it!
Rudy Ramirez & David Rivela made sure the kids
were safe from the ant piles by treating them a
week before- in fact, the majority of the board
cleaned the park up the week before, clearing dan-
gerous, broken limbs and hauling them away.
Lance Leone exhibited great patience in managing
both children and adults in the balloon toss- Annie
& Patrick Looney were our winners, but they had
an advantage: they play softball and regularly prac-
tice pitching to each other! Ellen Leone helped the
little ones with the fish pond. There were so many
prizes for all events -almost like Christmas for the
little ones!
We will be posting some of the photos Starr took at
the hunt within the next week or two on Next Door
so keep an eye out for them.
Making our events memorable and fun for all really
is a group effort. We could never have too many
volunteers and we need your input and suggestions.
If you want to give your ideas for speakers or pro-
grams for our events, please email me at
[email protected] or call 210-381-7718. I'd
love to hear from you!
Together, we make a difference!

Celebrity Neighbor - Jim Reed
Jim Reed, a Univer-
sity Health System
Foundation board
member since Febru-
ary 2014, was select-
ed as a recipient of
the 2015 San Anto-
nio Business Jour-
nal’s Legacy Leaders
Award. These
awards are among
the most special given by the Business Journal be-
cause they represent a lifetime of professional
achievement and community service. They are given
to people who have forever left their mark on San
Antonio in a positive way.
Mr. Reed is perhaps currently known for his leader-
ship of the San Antonio Medical Foundation. He has
served as president since 1999. The mission of the
Medical Foundation is to “provide leadership and
active stewardship of our land and other assets to
improve health care, advance biomedical science
and enhance community well-being.” The Medical
Foundation serves as a catalyst for the San Antonio
and South Texas healthcare and bioscience industry.
The Foundation Board of Directors has benefitted
from Mr. Reed’s leadership experience as a former
division manager of Southwestern Bell (currently
AT&T), and his vast knowledge of the medical com-
munity is immeasurable. Mr. Reed is an integral
member of the Foundation’s special event committee
that works on bringing in new donors into the organ-
ization.
Congratulations to Mr. Reed!

neighbors who should be featured in
the Acorn? If so, please contact Sara
Schmidt at 210-683-7127 or
The theme from the 2015 annual member-
ship meeting was “Making Neighborly
Connections.” Several new interest groups
were formed with the idea to provide op-
portunities for residents to connect around
common interests.

group? Contact Annie Looney, Member-

Mid-Century Modern Club Oak Hills contains many beautiful, mid-century modern homes. If you’ve been interested
in visiting these beauties or just showing off your own, Cathleen Crabb will be leading
this new interest group. Club members will take turns hosting the group in their home.

Book Club The Oak Hills Book held its second organizational meeting April 9th where we chose our
first reading selection and set up our next meeting. We plan to meet monthly at the homes
of our members, who will take turns hosting and moderating. We are still looking for fel-
low book lovers, men and women.
Fair Games Club Bob & Starr are taking names to see if enough neighbors are interested in playing a wide
variety of games offered at their home. Some examples: air hockey, pool, Scrabble, Mex-
ican Train, 42, Poker, Monopoly, Bridge, etc.
Live Theater Interest Group We are very fortunate to have the Woodlawn Theater and the San Pedro Playhouse locat-
ed within just 6 miles from our neighborhood. These theaters have an exciting 2015
lineup. Contact interested in attending events with other interested neighbors.
Gardening Club - Maybe? Do you like to garden? Or would you like to learn? Would you like to lead this group?
Sara Schmidt will host the first meeting of this group on May 3rd @ 2 PM at her home.
As she has a self-proclaimed “black thumb,” she will not be leading this group, but rather
would like to gauge interest and see where it goes.

Meals on Wheels “Animeal” Project
We continue our 5-year-long project to manage
the outdoor cat population in our neighborhood.
Over the most recent year, 17 community cats
were neutered and vaccinated from these streets:
Woodlake (4), Moss Oak (2), Lakeridge (2), Ash-
ton (1), Oakridge (2), Glencrest (2), Sylvanoaks
(2), Bluehill (2). Additionally, medical care was
provided to an ill cat on Woodlake.
Oak PAWS—Annual Report
OAK PAWS helps ANIMEALS
Here is a great big Thank You to all of
the generous Oak Hills residents who
donated to the Summer Pet Food
Drive. Contributions of 160 pounds of
pet food and $80 were presented to
Meals on Wheels at the OAK PAWS
October meeting. These donations will
be distributed by MOW’s ANIMEALS
program, helping homebound clients
with pets to feed. Special thanks to
Reagan Tucker and Wendy Long for
collecting and storing the food!
We supported neighbor-assisted placement for
strays. Veterinarian services were provided for
several dogs and cats. Homes were found for:
Sasha (injured adult dog with heartworm
adopted by the Nixons)
Precious (adult momcat with kittens adopted
by the Benavides family and Lisa Hinojosa),
Clementine (adult cat adopted by Lisa’s rela-
tive),
Vida (adult cat adopted by Mo Minara), Bud-
dy (warrior dog adopted through Wendy
Long to TAD/SAW),
Little One (small dog adopted through Debra
Fryatt’s work associate), and
Blackie (adult dog also adopted through
Debra).
Please remember to report any strays to Oak

Don’t Spread Oak Wilt
APRIL Page 7
www.myoakhills.net
Notices of the semi-annual city brush pick-up have been distributed throughout the neigh-
borhood. This means tree trimmers will be out in force offering their services. Residents
will also feel compelled to take advantage of this free brush disposal service.
While this is may be a good time to clean up and dispose of dead and diseased branches
on trees, noted horticulturist Neal Sperry advises in his weekly newspaper column that
oaks should not be pruned in the spring because of the danger of spreading oak wilt fun-
gus mat. Midwinter or midsummer are better times to prune.
If you feel you must prune your oaks at this time, special precautions should be taken to
protect not only your trees, but those throughout the neighborhood. First and foremost,
pick a qualified tree trimmer with a valid Tree Trimmer License. In San Antonio, all indi-
viduals and tree care companies must be licensed.
The San Antonio Arborist Association recommends that you:
Obtain a written quote that is specific, clear and well written
Be sure the company has liability insurance
Have a certified arborist supervise the crew
Check references
At the very least, be sure all cuts to oak trees are painted within 30 minutes. This is not only essential to prevent the
spread of oak wilt, it is required by city ordinance.
