AGM REPORT. It was very well supported, some discussion on subjects that were of

interest. The change over to the new committee was very well done. The new president

Mary Sayer gave an interesting speech about the up coming year. Everyone received a

ticket for a free drink on their arrival, and at the conclusion of the meeting the usual sau-

sage sizzle was enjoyed by all.

THANKS TO OUR OU GOING COMMITTEE.

We pass on our appreciation to the committee members of the 2017 committee. To those

who stepped in and helped out with the cooking, to Mary, Chris, Jeanette and helpers a

very big thank you. Friday tavern and dinner nights are a very big part of the Social Club,

we had problems last year in finding enough cooks for these nights. To everyone who

helped in any way regardless of how big or small your help was have a few laughs, and

go home happy. The Social Club has always been the hub of the village, organising

entertainment and functions throughout the year.

THE COBBA NEWS IS STARTING IT’S 21st YEAR.

Over that time there have been a lot of changes happening in the village. Management

have been vey helpful to us. We would like to thank all who have helped out in any way.

To Denise and Jim thank you for all your help in folding and putting the paper in the box-

es each month. To Dianne and John for helping out with proof reading, also Jan Riley.

Myrna Hughes also helped with the paper at one stage. Harry Baines, who’s idea it was to

start it, was a very big part of it until he gave it up. We couldn’t manage without all the

items residents give us.

From we first started it’s hard to believe we have been going for 20 years. There have

been a lot of changes since then. The Cobba News was printed originally by the office, but

their printer was not big enough to continue, which meant we had to find other printers,

which wasn't an easy task. We have had a few since we began. Management pay for the

printing, we are not paid for writing it, even though some think we do.

Over those 20 years it has been enjoyable. Despite takes taking a lot of time, but so does

everything. It is a real pleasure meeting the new people after they arrive.

To all who have given us encouragement, a sincere thank you. Over

the years we have had to ask for help for one reason or another from

residents and their help has been really appreciated. We have also,

over the years, had residents who enjoyed finding fault, but that we ex-

pected. We are always having people asking when the next Cobba

News will be out.

The mother-in-law arrives home from the shops to find her son-in-law , Paddy, in a steam-

ing rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened Paddy?" she asks anxiously.

"What happened? I'll tell you what happened! I sent an e-mail to my wife telling her I was

coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home ... and guess what I found? Your

daughter, my wife , Mary, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable,

the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" Moments later, the mother-in-

law comes back with a big smile. "Paddy, I told you there must be a simple explana-

tion ...... ... She never got your e-mail!".

We have been ask to remind people when a actives have booked the Hall that you respect their

time and do not disturb them. Tea and coffee can be made by residents but make your time

quiet and unobtrusive.

INDOOR BOWLS. Welcome back to our regular players from 2017 on Mon-

day January 15th. Also a very big welcome to 6 new bowlers that joined us on the

first day back. Thank you to Jim and Fred for helping out with the coaching prior to

us commencing our first game of 2018. It didn’t take too long for everyone to get

into the swing of things. A bit hectic at first getting everyone organised but by morning tea

time all was good. Everyone was chatting, laughing and realising what a great time we have at

indoor bowls on Monday mornings. Thank you for being at the Hall by 9.15 for bowling to

commence at 9.30. Due to popular demand, unfor tunately we are unable to accommodate

any more new bowlers at this stage. Please contact me if you wish to add your

name/s to the list to fill any vacancies as they become available. Sorry, but we

have had an overflow. Denise 5599 8956.

TRIVIA. Looks like we will have a few new players in February—the more

players, the more fun. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the Hall.

The next session is on MARCH 7th at 6.30 pm. It only costs $2 each, lollies pro-

vided and there are prizes for first past the post. So to all Cobakites, tell your

friends about our fun couple of hours. Brains are optional! If you are not sure, come along and

watch. You will be very welcome. Myrna

COBAKI COBBA’S SOCIAL LAWN BOWLS CLUB. Happy New Year to

everyone. We hope that 2018 will be another good year for the club with great

bowling days and friendships made. Due to this report having to be in prior to the

AGM and our first trip to Iluka Bowls Club on Sunday February 18th, there isn’t much for me

to tell you at this stage. In the meantime, keep a look out on the noticeboard for anything prior

to the next general meeting on Sunday March 4th in the Hall at 10.30 am. Please ring me on

5599 8956 if you have any questions. More news in the March report. Jim

SOCIAL GOLF. Wednesday 17th January was our first outing for the new

year. We had 14 players who contested an individual stableford event with some

very good scores returned. The overall winner with 40 points was Geoff Gosper,

closely followed by Lee Von Holdt on 39 points. Both received handicap reduc-

tions for their efforts. Nearest to the pins were hotly contested and won by Dianne Pepper

and Cliff Boyd on the 3rd, Bruno Kucko on the 8th and Lee on the 13th hole. A great

presentation followed with many laughs and tales from the course. If there are any new res-

idents who would like to join us for a social game you would be made most welcome. The

next game will be on February 21st. Lee

WATER AEROBICS. I would like to wish everyone a happy new year and

especially give a big thank you to Beryl and Trevor for running the classes for

me in my absence. I am back from my beautiful trip around Australia and it is

lovely to see all the old and new Cobakites in the pool. We have a record group this year so

please come along and join us. We have 2 new men coming as well as the women. We are

all having a lot of fun while gently exercising in the pool. I look forward to many more pa-

trons joining us. We are in the pool from Monday to Friday between 7.00 and 8.00 am. See

you soon. Jeanette

LADIES GROUP with COBAKI TRIPPERS. Well I hope that everybody

had a happy healthy Christmas and New Year and you are now full of ‘vim and

vigour’ for 2018. There is very little to report except that the first trip for the

COBAKI TRIPPERS will most likely be on 8th March. No details as yet ex-

cept that it will be a mystery trip! Details will be on the noticeboard early February. In the

meantime would those people interested in trips please let us know – phone Jean 5599

9273, Gladys 5599 8570 or Pat 5599 8679. Any suggestions for trips are also welcome.

Ladies, if you would like to ‘have a chat’, come along to the Hall every Wednesday at

10.00 am. Otherwise there is also a ‘chat’ group on Mondays at 2.00 pm or come to both.

Everyone is welcome and it’s a great way to meet new people. Jean

CRAFT. Hello from the Craft group. We hope everyone had a lovely Christ-

mas. We are now in the New Year and hopefully have lots of projects to look for-

ward to. We have a lady teaching us card making and another teaching crochet and

knitting, and now a few of us are teaching ourselves macramé. Welcome to all our

new members. Craft is on every Thursday in the Hall from 1.00 to 3.00 pm. Please come

and join us. Everyone is welcome. Jill

COMPUTER CLUB. A small group meets once a month on the last Friday

of the month in the Library at 10.30 am. If you have any questions about

computers, mobile phones, other devices or current affairs, or if you just feel like

a friendly chat, come and join us. Carol

LIBRARY. All the new shelving has been installed, giving us room to display

the newer and taller books. There are now 2 sequences (small and large) of Fiction

and of Crime, in alphabetical order by author surnames. The Non-fiction has been

grouped to some extent by type, such as war, sport, humour and biography. The

jigsaws have moved around to the other wardrobe to allow the display of the larger coffee

table books above the magazines. There is a great variety of DVDs to pick from. No need to

join. Just borrow when you like and return to the white trolley. Ann

CANASTA. It has been a good star t to the new year and great to see famil-

iar faces along with some new members who have just joined us. There is al-

ways room for more. If you don’t know how to play we are happy to teach you

in the Hall or in one of our homes. The Hall is nice and cool with the air condi-

tioning so don’t sit at home sweltering. Come down and join us for a few hours of relaxed

chit chat and a game of cards every Wednesday from 12.45 pm for a 1.00 pm start. Judy

EXERCISE. We are still a small group but we enjoy the mixed routines on

DVD by qualified instructors. We have lots of room for new participants. It

makes a good start to the day, is indoors and free. We meet on Mondays,

Wednesdays and Fridays in the Hall from 7.00 to 7.45 am. Do join us.

Elizabeth

GOLF CROQUET. Come to the Cobaki Croquet Cour ts on February

24th at 8.30 am to learn to play both golf and r icochet croquet. A meet-

ing will be held prior to the game. We hope to welcome all our members

and any new people. We will teach you to play this low stress physical ex-

ercise for the body and the mind. It is easy to learn and you can borrow a DVD with details.

Mallets and other equipment are supplied. Bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes. Noth-

ing is impossible - I’m possible! John

COBAKI LITTLE THEATRE.

The Theatre group is hoping to put on a show in July 2018, but we need lots of

new members to help us. Can you sing, dance, tell a joke, play a musical instru-

ment or just like to have fun? You’ll be surprised at what you can do if you try. If

you are interested, why not come along on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.00pm in the hall. For

more information give Trish a ring on 5599 9561.

A very concerned man shouts frantically into the phone, "My wife is pregnant

and her contractions are only two minutes apart!" "Is this her first child?" asks

the Doctor. "No!" he shouts, "this is her husband!"

WELCOME TO OUR NEW RESIDENTS.

Margaret Looyer and Patrick Tuite have moved into house 185 after

spending the last four years in Darwin. Their interests include golf, garden-

ing and water aerobics.

Peter and Beryl McHutchinson are settling into house 300 after moving

down from Carrara. Their main interest is music, especially jazz.

Welcome to Dorothy Perger who is trying to fit in settling into house 206 with

her busy lifestyle. She comes from Robina to join various friends in the Vil-

lage.

We also welcome Renate Prahin who moved into house 175 in time for

Christmas. She is working on painting and personalising her new home.

She has moved from Mudgeeraba.

Carmen Aguado is now living in house 339. She comes from

Melbourne originally and has moved to be nearer the grandchildren.

Beryl and John Newall are now settled into house 333. They moved

from Burpengary, Another couple who have returned to the village

after leaving it 5 years ago. Beryl loves her garden, John is looking

forward to a rest, now they have the house as they wanted it.

GARDENING WITH ROSS.

Here we are, February, and week seven plus in the new year.

We have just had a super moon. The Moon has a major influence on our gardens and the weather patterns. With this influence likely to cause very high tides and super heavy dews in the night and early morning.

This month (Feb) we need mulch on our gardens. Please remember to put a good sprinkling of Blood and Bone under any mulch to counteract the leaching of nitrogen from the soil. March is like a second spring in the Tweed.

In March we can plant or sow most vegetables and flowering plants. Getting your soil ready now is of major importance. Make sure you moisture levels in your soil are up, please do NOT overwater, because sodden soil kills all the living structure (bacteria) .

Happy gardening. Ross

Sadly we report the passing of

COLIN WOOD house 314

He passed away peacefully on 24th January 2018. Due to ill

health he had been in Opal Aged Care nursing home. Colin had

been in the village 16 years. In the early years he helped with cooking for the

Social Club. He also was very good at woodwork and attended a workshop at Elanora.

Norma and family would like to thank everyone for their love and support.

Words cannot express how it is very much appreciated.

Many thank for those involved in helping with the wake.

MAYBE YOU CAN HELP. My wife June suffers with memory loss and I would

like to meet up with other couples who have this same problem in the village. We could

meet over coffee in the hall to talk about how we are coping with the extra responsibilities

we are experiencing. It may help to lesson our problems as this is something we have nev-

er had to deal with before. Bearing in mind government need us to keep up our caring re-

sponsibilities for the pittance they pay us, maybe we can learn something from each oth-

er. Give me a call on 0407 298 232 Tom Hawkes house 93.

Due to popular demand, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate

any more new bowlers at this stage. Please contact me if you wish to add

your name/s to the list to fill any vacancies as they become available.

Sorry, but we have had an overflow! Denise 5599 8956.

BORDER CARPET AND WINDOW CLEANING.

We now have a package deal, house wash, rata driveway wash, windows inside

and out, all carpets steam cleaned and deodorised for a total cost of $250 win-

dows only $80. Give Mark a call on 0400 269 199 for more information.

A grandfather is a man and grandmother is a lady! Grandparents don't have to do anything

except be there when we come to see them. They are so old they shouldn't play hard or

run. It’s good if they drive us to the shops and give us money. When they

take us for walks, they walk slow past things like leaves and caterpillars.

They show us and talk to us about the colours of the flowers and also why

we shouldn’t step on the ‘cracks’.

Page 8: EDITION 225 FEBRUARY 2018 - Cobaki Broadwater Villagecobakibroadwatervillage.com.au/feb18news.pdf · daughter, my wife , Mary, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable,

MESSAGE FROM MANAGEMENT.

Speeding. This is still a problem, do slow down. When you hit someone it’s too late to

start saying sorry.

Car parking. If you are visiting someone consider where you park, make sure you are

not over a driveway or making it impossible for cars to pass or get out of their driveways.

Always consider others.

WATER AEROBICS. These are a few photos taken recently. Water aerobics has been

happening in the village from a little time after it opened back in 1993. The exercises are

very easy and you do what you can. At present Jeanette is the instructor and she will help

you. Numbers go up and down and that has happened since it first started. We back off in

winter. It’s a fun time as well. In the photos you can see the type of exercises the group do.

It’s a great way to start the day. It’s all free. Why not give it a go, a way to cool off with

the heat we have been having. There is only one rule, that you enjoy yourself!

Getting started Some of the easy exercises

Finishing off the morning

with the help of the Dumb bells.

The water is not deep, under the

shade it’s shallow the centre is the

deepest part, at the steps it’s a good

depth. There is a ledge all the way

around the pool. Why not join in.
