WE ARE GOING TO THE PROMISED LAND IN 2013We are very happy to receive news from Joe Preite, the Ministry of Public Relations, informing that in 2013 the SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL Catholic Church will finally have their own building on the South Post of Weston and that soon they will announce the Break Ground ceremony. This project has been called the “Promised Land”, and I think it is very good because they have been fighting to have their own Temple and this has also been the promise and hope of their parishioner’s to have this come true.Since its foundation in September 15, 2002, 1,500 people visit a rented space of 600 sqft at 2700 Glades Circle. Soon it will be a 1,100 Sqft! Since then Father Paul Edwards, its founder, spent all his effort to the construction of the building, but unfortunately he became ill and died (RIP) and the plans were discontinued in 2005. Although they had tried to build the Church in the grounds of the South Post Drive in 2010 the economic situation did not favor the fundraising to achieve this dream. Finally in 2007, Pastor Fr. Pedro M. Corces was appointed by the Archbishop John Clement Favalora to take up this project until 2010 when Fr. Pedro is assigned elsewhere and Father Enrique Delgado arrived, who is now the current Pastor and promoter responsible for the building of St Katharine Drexel Church in Weston.

We recognize that the accomplishments of the Catholic Church have been overwhelming. Religious Education began with barely 114 children in Weston in 2002, today now have more than 600 children, given the growing Catholic community residing in Weston.Many nonprofit organizations and voluntary groups have supported the administrators of the Church for the construction of this headquarters of the Catholic Church. They recently held the 5Th Annual Gala celebration called “Hearts Afire” at the Weston Hills Country Club to raise funds for the operating expenses of the new building. The Gala was organized by the events Committee, Jack Delfonso and volunteer Michaele O’Neill , which proved to be a great success according to the comments of many families that enjoyed the event while they contributed financially to this project raising $ 48,000. We encourage the Catholic Community , especially to the Latin community to contribute their grain of sand to the success of this project. SKD is currently paying $20,000 for rent that can be avoided if we had our own place. You can donate now by calling the Parish Office at 954-389-5003. . This is also a way of rewarding God for all the times we have asked HIM to “lend us a hand” …don’t you think?

Estamos muy contentos al recibir la noticia de parte de Joe Preite, Ministro de Relaciones Publicas, informándonos que en el 2013 la SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL por fin tendrá su Templo en la South Post de Weston y que próximamente anunciaremos la colocación de la primera piedra (break ground). Este proyecto lo han llamado la “Tierra Prometida”, y creo que está muy bien porque desde que están luchando por tener un Templo propio, se ha aumentado la esperanza y el compromiso entre sus feligreses para verlo hecho realidad.

Desde su fundación en Septiembre 15, del 2002 hasta ahora, la comunidad asiste a un lugar alquilado en la 2700 Glades Circle de 600 pies cuadrados, que pronto serán 1,100 pies cuadrados! Desde aquel momento el Padre Paul Edwards, su Fundador, dedicó todo su esfuerzo para la construcción del edificio, pero lamentablemente enfermó y falleció ( QEPD) y los planes se interrumpieron en el 2005. Aunque se había ofrecido construir en el 2010 la Iglesia en los terrenos de la South Post Drive, la situación económica no favoreció la recolección de fondos para realizar este sueño. Finalmente en el 2007, fue designado por el Arzobispo John Clement Favalora al Pastor Fr. Pedro M. Corces, quien retoma este proyecto hasta el 2010 cuando el Fr. Pedro es designado a otro lugar y llega el Padre Enrique Delgado, quien es el actual Pastor y responsable promotor de la construcción de la Iglesia St Katharine Drexel en Weston.

Debemos reconocer que los logros de la Iglesia Católica, han sido avasallantes. La Educación Católica comenzó apenas con 114 niños en Weston en el 2002, hoy tienen más de 600, dada la creciente comunidad Católica que reside en Weston. Muchas organizaciones sin fines de lucro y grupos voluntarios han apoyado a los Administradores de la Iglesia para la construcción de la Sede de la Iglesia Católica. Recientemente se realizó la 5ta Celebración de la Gala Anual llamada “Hearts Afire” en el Weston Hills Country Club, para apoyar en la recaudación de fondos para los gastos operativos de construcción del nuevo edificio. La Gala fue organizada por el Comité de Eventos, jack Delfonso y Michaele O”Neill, resultando exitoso según comentarios de muchas familias que se divirtieron mientras recolectaron $ 48,000.

Hacemos un llamado a toda la Comunidad Católica, especialmente a la Latina para que aporten su granito de arena al éxito de este proyecto. Have you ever approached an intersection and heard a siren? Perhaps you have looked in your rearview mirror and saw flashing lights behind you. Chances are that you have passed an emergency worker or a law enforcement officer who pulled off the roadway with his or her lights flashing. You should be aware that in Florida the law requires that you move over, make way and slow down when approaching all emergency and law enforcement vehicles stopped on the roadway. The law, known as the Move Over Act, is designed to protect law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency workers from needless, accidental tragedy.

After 34 years in law enforcement and public safety, I have learned that driving, especially when responding to calls for service, is the most hazardous duty performed by law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service professionals. We at the Broward Sheriff’s Office are not immune to such tragedies. This past February was the six-year anniversary of the death of Deputy Ryan Seguin, who was killed by a motorist while conducting a traffic stop. This tragedy and numerous other fatalities and injuries to emergency service workers could have been avoided had the driver simply slowed down and moved over.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office strictly enforces the Move Over Law to help keep you and all public safety professionals safe. While on the roadway, please be alert, pay attention and remember the following:

• If an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind, put on your turn signal, yield to the right-of-way, slow down or pull over. Once the emergency vehicle has passed, use your turn signal and carefully re-enter the roadway.

• On a two-lane roadway, you are required to slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or

less, you must slow down to five miles per hour.

• If you are driving on an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction and you approach an emergency or law enforcement vehicle parked along the roadway, you must vacate the lane closest to that vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

• When arriving at an intersection where an emergency vehicle is approaching from the cross street, come to a complete stop and wait until all emergency vehicles have safely passed before continuing.

If you are a driver who violates the Move Over Law, you can be charged with a moving violation, which results in a fine and points on your license. More importantly, by violating this important law, you would be putting both yourself and a dedicated “first

responder” at risk.

On behalf of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, I urge you to help protect those who are sworn to serve and protect you. Always remember to make way, slow down and MOVE OVER when approaching an emergency or law enforcement vehicle – it’s the law.

Hispanic vote becomes increasingly important More than 21 million Hispanics

The Hispanic population is the largest growing minority in the United States and in a few years this group will make up a 25% of the total US population. It is expected that in the near future one of four people will be of Hispanic descent. According to the Census Bureau, more than half of the population growth in the country occurred in the Hispanic communities. This is precisely why the Hispanic vote is becoming increasingly important in the political arena, a powerful reason for a Broward-based organization to want to promote political activism in this community.

“Our mission is that each Hispanic is able to vote and that we are able to create the force we are able to be,” said Juan Carlos Sanchez, founding member of the political action committee (PAC) The Hispanic Vote, an organization with headquarters in Pembroke Pines.

Founded in October 2011, this non-partisan organization was created with the idea of focusing on issues affecting the Hispanic community and promoting voter activism and participation. Although still new, this organization has already grown to be a point of reference for Hispanic issues in the Broward area, Sanchez said.

Sanchez explained that the Hispanic vote is becoming increasingly important because this minority group has the ability to work together to become a political force. Each month, 50,000 Latinos turn 18, which means they reach the age that allows them to become registered voters and participate in the political decision-making process. Experts predict, on the long run, these numbers are sure to change the political atmosphere and direction of the country. There are currently 50 million Hispanics living in the United States.

According to data from the Pew Center, 25% of Broward’s population is from Hispanic origin. However, not all Hispanics are exercising their right to vote and as a consequence, they do not have the impact on the process and are misrepresented in local governmental bodies, such as the Broward County Commission, Sanchez pointed out.

This is mostly due to lack of education and voter apathy because many Hispanics still do not understand how powerful their voice can be, Sanchez said. Many of them come from countries in which adverse political systems are the norm. Others come to this country with the idea that all politicians are corrupt, or they were simply not allowed to directly elect their president in their countries, and thus, do not feel they have a say on the matter. Some Hispanics even feel that local elections are not important and only go out to vote on presidential campaigns. This tendency, Sanchez believes, is a mistake. “By not going out to vote, we are staying away from participating,” he said.

And this is where The Hispanic Vote can make a difference. Through workshops, educational lectures, and radio shows, this PAC hopes to educate Hispanic voters about the importance of being part of the process and having their vote count.

Sanchez explained one of his goals is to make Hispanics understand that they need to be proactive in electing their local judges, commissioners, as well as school district and congressional representatives because these are the politicians that will make decisions that will directly impact the Latino families and their pockets. For example, he said during the last election period, many Hispanic

judges lost their seats only because of lack of support from Hispanic voters who did not go out to the polls.

He also said some politicians are under the impression, and have even said, that they do not need to work to serve Hispanics because “they don’t count.” Sanchez said it is time to clear misconceptions and change the

status quo by showing these politicians that the Hispanic community has awakened and wants to be heard.

More than 21 million Hispanics are now eligible to vote in the United States. However, only about 6.6 million showed up to the polls during last year’s midterm election. Although an all time high, the number shows many Hispanics are still not making their voices be heard and that is why they are misrepresented, according to Sanchez.

A clear example, at the local level, is the Broward County Commission, which has no Hispanics serving on it, in spite of the fact

that 25% of the population here is Hispanic. Sanchez said his organization’s proposal for the redistricting process, the redrawing of districts that occurs every 10 years, was completely ignored and disregarded by commissioners, who felt no pressure to include the Hispanic community’s input in their plan. The Hispanic Vote wanted to level the playing field and allow the Hispanics to select a representative but Sanchez believes the plan was voted down with the intent of diluting the Hispanic power.

The organization plans to challenge the new boundaries in court. Congressional maps passed by Tallahassee are also being challenged on grounds of unconstitutionality.

But in spite of the many hurdles, The Hispanic Vote is making progress as an organization as they were able to put enough pressure on the Pembroke Pines Commission to cancel the contract to provide water, sewer, and emergency services to the prison facility slated to be built in Southwest Ranches.

The detention center is a project by U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement

(ICE) with the idea of housing more than 1,000 immigrants. The prison would be privately managed by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the contract with Pembroke Pines was vital for its construction. Many residents opposed the project alleging it would negatively affect their quality of life and lower their property values.

In the meantime, CCA has said it will drill its own wells in order to provide the infrastructure needed for the facility.

Hispanic voters are becoming so important that even the prestigious Time Magazine dedicated one of its cover articles to an analysis of the impact this population will have in the upcoming presidential elections. According to the article, the Latino vote might decide the outcome of the presidential race and both Democrats and Republicans will have to work hard at winning it. At the center of the race, the heated debate over illegal immigration and the need for reform.

George W. Bush was able to get more than 40% backing from Latinos in 1994 and became president. But later Barack Obama was able to swing their support his way in 2008.

But Sanchez contends none of the two parties has done enough for Hispanics or to resolve the many issues surrounding illegal immigration. He said, sadly, politicians only remember the Hispanic community when it is election time and they need their votes. Although great supporters of the president, Hispanics have strongly criticized him for not being aggressive enough in trying to find a solution to the immigration issue. Obama’s administration has a high rate of deportations.

However, the president has recently instituted provisions in favor of immigrants. One of them would allow undocumented spouses to apply for citizenship without having to leave the country. Another one prioritizes deportations of criminals in order to avoid family separations. For some, this is not enough.

According to the Pew Center, in 2006 the majority of Hispanic voters in Florida were registered Republicans. But the numbers have shifted with a majority of Hispanics now registered as Democrats. The ball is still in anyone’s court. With a total of 13% Hispanic voters, Florida, and Hispanics in general, are certain to be instrumental in shaping the political future of the United States.

Cifras del Buró del Censo demuestran que más de la mitad del crecimiento de la población estadounidense ocurrió dentro de las comunidades hispanas. Precisamente, por esto es que el voto hispano ha ganado notoriedad y aunque todavía existe apatía dentro de esta población en cuanto al voto se refiere, una organización local está trabajando arduamente para fomentar el poder de los hispanos en el condado de Broward.

“Nuestra misión es que cada hispano vote y que creemos la fuerza que [somos capaces] de ser”, explica Juan Carlos Sánchez, miembro fundador del comité de acción política (PAC) El Voto Hispano, con sede en Pembroke Pines.

Este grupo no partidista fue fundado en octubre de 2011 con la intención de enfocarse en asuntos que afectan a la comunidad hispana y ayudar a esta población a integrarse en el proceso político y de votación en su nuevo país. En su corto tiempo de fundada, la organización ya se ha convertido en un punto de referencia en la política de Broward, dijo Sánchez.

Sánchez dice que la importancia del voto hispano ha ido en crescendo en los últimos años porque en la unión de este grupo es que se encuentra su fuerza política. Sánchez explicó que muchos latinos no tienen el hábito de votar porque vienen de países con sistemas políticos adversos, o incluso países donde no pueden votar directamente por un presidente. Otros tienen la noción de que únicamente las elecciones presidenciales son las importantes y no las locales.

Esto es un error, explica Sánchez. “Por no salir a votar estamos dejando de participar”, dijo.

He ahí la importancia de El Voto Hispano, una organización que a través de talleres, programas de radios, y otras charlas informativas planea educar a la comunidad hispana acerca de la importancia del voto.

Sánchez asevera que los hispanos deben votar a nivel local por sus jueces, comisionados, distrito escolar, y representantes estatales porque éstas son las personas que van a tomar decisiones que los afectarán directamente. Por ejemplo, citó que en las últimas elecciones, los jueces hispanos fueron derrotados por no tener suficiente respaldo de los votantes latinos, quienes no hicieron presencia masiva en las urnas.

De igual manera señaló que algunos políticos tienen la percepción de que no deben trabajar en asuntos que afectan a la comunidad hispana porque estos “no cuentan”. Sánchez dijo que es hora de cambiar esta creencia y demostrarle a todos que la comunidad hispana ha despertado y que van a hacer que su voz se escuche.

En EEUU existen más de 21 millones de hispanos elegibles para votar. Sin embargo,

solamente unos seis millones votaron en las elecciones de medio término (midterm) del año pasado.

Uno de los ejemplos más claros de la falta de representación es la Junta de Comisionados en Broward en la cual no hay hispanos a pesar de que el 25 por ciento de la población del condado es de origen hispano. Sánchez señaló que durante las audiencias públicas donde se consideraron diferentes mapas para dibujar los nuevos distritos condales, la propuesta de El Voto Hispano fue ignorada, eliminándose así cualquier posibilidad de

crear un distrito donde la presencia hispana fuera mayoría. Sánchez consideró la conducta de la comisión como una movida para diluir el poder de los hispanos y dijo que únicamente el voto de esta comunidad puede cambiar el estatus quo.

Se espera que el caso vaya a los tribunales y que los jueces decidan la constitucionalidad de la decisión. Los mapas congresionales aprobados en Tallahassee también están bajo escrutinio.

Pero a pesar de las trabas políticas, la organización se anotó una victoria recientemente. Y es que debido a sus presiones, la Ciudad de Pembroke Pines decidió cancelar el contrato que proveería servicios de agua y alcantarillados al centro

de detención de inmigrantes que está pautado a construirse en Southwest Ranches.

El centro de detención es un proyecto del departamento del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) que establecería una prisión para más de 1,000 inmigrantes y que sería operada por una compañía privada. Muchos de los residentes del área se oponen a la construcción de la prisión alegando que dicho proyecto afectaría su calidad de vida y ocasionaría la devaluación de sus propiedades. La compañía privada a cargo de las operaciones, llamada Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), ha dicho que planea diseñar su propia infraestructura.

La importancia del voto hispano ha crecido tanto y es de tal relevancia que la revista Time dedicó un artículo de portada al análisis del poder político de la comunidad latina, señalando que estos votantes podrían decidir las elecciones presidenciales del 2012. El extenso articulo señala que ambos partidos políticos, demócrata y republicano se disputarán el voto hispano y es por eso que el énfasis está en las leyes relacionadas con la inmigración.

En 1994 el expresidentes George W. Bush adquirió más del 40 por ciento del voto hispano, pero en el 2008, Barack Obama fue quien recibió el apoyo de esta minoría.

Pero Sánchez señaló que en realidad ninguno de los dos partidos ha hecho mucho por los hispanos y que lamentablemente los políticos se acuerdan de ellos únicamente en época de elecciones, lo cual debe cambiar. A nivel nacional, la comunidad hispana ha criticado al presidente Obama porque, bajo su mandato, se han efectuado una gran cantidad de deportaciones

Sin embargo, recientemente ha entablado medidas para permitir que esposos indocumentados apliquen para la ciudadanía sin tener que abandonar el país. También dijo que se dará preferencia a los criminales en las deportaciones para evitar separar familias.

Según el Centro Pew los hispanos de la florida estaban inscritos, en su mayoría, como republicanos en el 2006 pero los números han cambiado para ahora favorecer al partido demócrata. While population and demand on freshwater resources are increasing, supply will always remain constant. And although it’s true that the water cycle continuously returns water to Earth, it is not always returned to the same place, or in the same quantity and quality.Fix a Leak Week 2012 is already here, for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. EPA’s WaterSense and its partners will raise awareness about the importance of eliminating household leaks during Fix a Leak Week, March 12 through 18, 2012. Fixing household leaks not only saves water, but reduces water utility bills—significantly. If you think that a tiny leak doesn’t make a big difference, let me share with you some facts:

-An American home can waste, on average, more than 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks. -The amount of water leaked from U.S. homes could exceed more than 1 trillion gallons per year. That’s equivalent to the annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami combined.

-Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

-The vast majority of leaks can be eliminated after retrofitting a household with new WaterSense labeled fixtures and other high-efficiency appliances.

-The average household spends over $700 per year on its water and sewer bill. By making just a few simple changes on how to use water more efficiently, you could save about $200 per year.

Everyone can play their important role in preserving our most precious resource. With just few simple steps you can make a big difference. Here, you have some information to find out if you are wasting water and the source of the leak:-Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

-Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 15 minutes, you have a leak. (Be sure to flush immediately after the experiment to avoid staining the tank.)

-Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.

-Replacing the toilet flapper, can be a quick and easy fix for your water woes.-Replace Old and worn faucet washers and gaskets in your faucets, this frequently cause leaks.

-Showerheads leaks can be fixed by making sure there is a tight connection between the s h o w e r h e a d and the pipe stem and by using pipe tape to secure it.

Consumers can reduce water use by installing water-efficient W a t e r S e n s e l a b e l e d products or e m p l o y i n g e f f i c i e n c y practices, such as turning the water off while brushing teeth or running washing machines only when they are full. There are incentives available that will help you to reduce the initial cost.

INCENTIVES AND REBATES:The Broward Water Partnership Program is offering rebates and free water-conserving devices.

-Qualifying participants are encouraged to replace their current toilet(s) that use(s) more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush with WaterSense® certified High-Efficiency Toilets (HET). Rebates are provided for up $100 each, or the cost of the HET, whichever is less.

-They are providing residential customers with free, low-flow water faucet aerators and showerheads.

Consumers can reduce their water bills by as much as 30 percent by using WaterSense labeled products and other water-efficient appliances.

Sometimes the analysis to make an investment can seem very complicated. You should be able to convert Excel spreadsheet on your income statements and weigh all logical variables that may affect your investment. You should analyze where to invest, what the competition has, in which cycle economic lies and review publications that offer data on your potential investment

Other times the analysis is simpler. The money is always going somewhere and today we find that: people are investing in real estate. Those who purchased properties a couple of years ago are enjoying today’s yields that are higher than 7 per cent from rental income, with a slight increase in the prices of properties depending on the area and type of property purchased.

Those who buy a property are protecting their inheritance. In the University, classes of macroeconomics show that when Governments “prints ‘ money and inject it into the economy, it means inflation.” In the first quarter of 2012, the European Central Bank handed out “rescues” almost 530 million Euros. The central banks of Japan and England are also injecting cheap money.

And here at “home” we have not seen the intention of Bernanke to stop the flow of money coming from the Federal Reserve. Not to mention that along with this inflationary pressure they are producing high fuel costs, and may be involved in the increase of what we consume: transportation, food, goods and services. All this is happening even with a high unemployment rate

We remember that a few years ago in the Greenspan era the low interest rates prompted the mortgage “bubble” and raised the price of oil to $147.00 a barrel. Now the situation is even more compelling. Not only are we talking about the United States, but almost all industrialized countries are printing “cheap money”, American-style.

Then, how do we face this scenario? What to do when investors have large placements in cash in the Bank, shares or other “volatile investments” with variables susceptible to have important potential losses? The money is always going somewhere, but…..where?By investing in a property at today’s prices you will protect your inheritance and enjoy better returns. Simply buy your properties in “areas of high demand for rentals”, choose your tenants well, and check the behavior of the market. This way you will protect your asset while your assets “work” for you. Inflation may inflate the price of the property and their expenses, but also your income.

We have seen the rise and fall of these “bubbles”. However, we continue to apply the same monetary policies expecting different results. Real estate prices are beginning to climb, according to the index of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (Federal housing financial agency) in Broward County prices rose a 2.8 per cent during the second half of 2011, and while in Miami-Dade County houses rose by 1.8 percent. Miami-Dade was able to register a record home sales numbers in 2011 with 24,929 sales of condos and single-family homes, according to the Association of Realtors of Miami.

Do we now see where the money is going? Many people are investing in real estate! Inflation and demand are boosting prices, so invest now and be conscientious of when to get out. You will know that when the prices of properties are unattainable for the average population according to their income.

There are other “investors” with speculative

trends and those that are “fashionable”. Investors are buying in Miami because it is a “hot spot” for foreigners with money from Latin America, Europe and Asia and they feel attracted by prices that are relatively low compared to other metropolitan cities of United States like New York, Chicago and San Francisco, among others.

The market in South Florida is still very uneven. While cities such as Weston, Doral, Miami may be booming, other areas are full of abandoned property, crime, foreclosures and even homelessness people. There is a wide gap between the rich foreigners and local revenues. Locals are forced to rent and the American Dream is moving far away due to lack of access to credit which forces them to rent.

If you are on the side you can invest, protect yourself now buying a property. The return of your investment is above 6 or 7% after expenses. Do not let the bus go aay, if you have your ticket, hop in… Is the time!

Algunas veces el análisis para hacer una inversión puede parecer muy complicado. Ud. debe tener la capacidad de convertir una hoja de Excel en cuentas de resultados y ponderar todas las variables lógicas que puedan afectar su inversión. En la Universidad hemos aprendido de las clases de macroeconomía, que cuando los gobiernos “imprimen’ dinero y lo inyectan en la economía, se traduce en inflación. En este primer trimestre del 2012, el Banco Central Europeo repartió en “rescates” casi 530 millones de Euros. Los Bancos Centrales de Japón e Inglaterra también están inyectando dinero barato. Y aquí en “casa” no se le ve la intención a Bernanke de detener el flujo de dinero que viene de la Reserva Federal. Eso sin contar que la presión inflacionaria que están produciendo los altos costos del combustible, conllevan al incremento de todo lo que consumimos: transporte, alimentos, bienes y servicios. Todo esto está ocurriendo frente a una tasa de desempleo todavía elevada.

Ahora podemos recordar que hace pocos años en la época de Greenspan la tasa de interés-baja impulsó la “burbuja” hipotecaria y elevó el precio del petróleo a $147.00 el barril. Ahora la situación es más contundente. No solo hablamos de Estados Unidos, casi todos los países industrializados están imprimiendo “dinero barato”, al estilo americano.

Entonces, ¿cómo hacer frente a este escenario? ¿Qué hacer cuando los inversionistas tienen grandes colocaciones en efectivo en el banco, en acciones u otras “inversiones volátiles” con variables tan susceptibles para tener pérdidas potenciales importantes? El dinero siempre va a algún lado, pero…hacia donde?

Al Invertir en una propiedad a precios de hoy Ud. protegerá su patrimonio y disfrutará de mejores rendimientos. Solo tiene que atinar en comprar su inmueble en “zonas de alta demanda de alquileres”, escoger bien a su

inquilino y revisar el comportamiento del mercado. De esta manera Ud. protege su activo mientras su activo “trabaja” para Ud. La inflación inflará el precio de su propiedad y sus gastos, pero también sus ingresos.

Hemos visto el auge y la caída de estas “burbujas”. Sin embargo, se siguen aplicando las mismas políticas monetarias esperando resultados diferentes. Sometimes we see mothers and families being happier because there is a new baby boy in the family and not so happy when there is a new baby girl. This is the first social element spreading inequality among genders.

WOMEN AND SOCIAL INEqUALITy: Social conditions define, without a doubt, the behavior of the economy. In those parts of the world where women have historically been treated as second class citizens the economy tends to be less developed, than in those other regions where there are smaller differences among men and women.

When women are neglected, education access is restricted; also there is limited access to ownership, work opportunities, education and political power. The consequence is an enormous reduction of the real potential of humankind.

WOMEN VS. MEN: Statistically more men are born than women, however, women are healthier than men and in more developed economies we find 105 women per each 100 men.

EDUCATION AMONG MEN AND WOMEN: In North and South America as well as in Europe, men and women literacy levels are similar. However in the Arab countries and in some regions of Asia and Africa there are strong differences with clear men domination. The direct consequences of illiteracy are limited access to all levels of education, to the best jobs and to better income.

WORk FORCE: The more women we find in the work force, the more independence and control they achieve, and many other social aspects begin to change rapidly. Important portions of their income go to healthcare and education of their children. POLITICAL POSITIONS: Along the course of history women have had little political representation, as opposed to men, with

few clear exceptions that have been highly recognized and celebrated.

Only three years ago when Hilary Clinton was competing to become the presidential nominee, we frequently could hear in social groups in the United States the following expression “The US is not ready yet to have a female president”

That we can still find this type of discrimination in the United States, the largest economy in the world, makes it easy to conclude that in the rest of the world women continue to be covertly or overtly discriminated in significant levels.

NEW TIMES, WOMEN AND THE ECONOMy: Statistics show that more women than men are graduating from college; both are getting into the workforce in the same proportions. However, after becoming employed men have much better possibilities than women.

CHILDCARE COST: For young families this is one of the most important budget items and could reach 25% to 50% of the family income. This could begin to define a trend in future population growth.

WOMEN AND CULTURE: There is a patriarchal vision that traditionally defines the man as the bread-winner, the “provider”, and this will condition the basic rights of the woman.This vision is still part of the subliminal perception of societies around the world.

CONCLUSIONS: We are facing enormous progress in the contribution that women are bringing to the world‘s economy. However it is important that women who have been diminished by social patterns regain trust, confidence and awareness of their rights in order for them to reach the same levels of success as men.

This achievement should be obtained through collective conscience rather than through the implementation of laws and norms, and it will only we decisive when we can no longer see defined pre-established differences between the sexes.A society where men and women have the same opportunities will be a society with much more solid economic foundations.

MUJERES y EL MACHISMO: El machismo es una expresión de dominación social aceptada por la condición hormonal que define la virilidad masculina. El machismo está presente históricamente en muchas culturas a lo largo y ancho del mundo.

Las madres por condicionamiento social son tradicionalmente las primeras encargadas de la promulgación del machismo como principio de cultura aceptada.

Cuando las madres y por consiguiente las familias se alegran de tener un hijo varón y se entristecen por el advenimiento de una niña, se convierten en el primer elemento de divulgación de la desigualdad de los géneros.

MUJERES y DESIGUALAD SOCIAL: Las condiciones sociales definen de manera estructural el comportamiento de la economía. Aquellas regiones del mundo donde a las mujeres, de manera histórica, se les ha tratado como ciudadanos de segunda clase, sin duda a lo largo del tiempo tienden a tener economías menos desarrolladas que en aquellas culturas donde la diferencia de género es menos marcada.

Cuando a la mujer se le trata como inferior, se le resta acceso a la educación, a la propiedad, a las oportunidades laborales, al acceso a la educación y al poder político, se crea una disminución incalculable del verdadero potencial de la humanidad.

LAS MUJERES VS LOS HOMBRES: De acuerdo a las estadísticas nacen más hombres que mujeres, no obstante las mujeres son más saludables que los hombres y en las economías más desarrolladas encontramos 105 mueres por cada 100 hombres.

NIVEL DE EDUCACIóN ENTRE HOMBRES y MUJERES: En Norte y Sur América, así como en Europa tanto hombres como mujeres tienden a saber leer y escribir en las mismas proporciones. No obstante en los apaíses árabes y en algunas regiones de Asia y África las diferencias son marcadas y predominan los hombres. La consecuencia directa de no saber leer y escribir es el reducido acceso a todos los niveles de educación y por consiguiente a los mejores trabajos y mejores ingresos.

LA FUERzA LABORAL y EL TRABAJO: En la medida que la mujer se incorpora a la fuerza laboral y comienza a tener independencia y control sobre su ingreso otros aspectos sociales comienzan a cambiar de inmediato, ya que comienzan a dedicar porciones importante de su ingreso a la salud y educación de los niños.

LOS CARGOS y POSICIONES PúBLICAS: Las mujeres a lo largo de la historia han mantenido poca representación en estas posiciones en comparación con los hombres, salvo claras y celebradas excepciones.

Hace solo tres años, cuando Hillary Clinton competía por la candidatura a la presidencia, se podía escuchar en los círculos sociales de los Estado Unidos la siguiente expresión “ Los Estados Unidos todavía no están listos para tener una mujer presidenta”.

Si en los Estados Unidos, no obstante su lugar de prominencia en la economía mundial, todavía se manejan este tipo de conceptos de manera abierta, podemos concluir que en el resto del mundo la mujer continúa de manera abierta o discreta sufriendo niveles importantes de discriminación.

LOS NUEVOS TIEMPOS LAS MUJERES y LA ECONOMíA: Las estadísticas muestran cómo se están graduando más mujeres que hombres de las universidades, sin embargo están ingresando al mercado de trabajo en la misma proporción. Luego de empleados, los hombres tienen mucha más posibilidad de progreso que las mujeres.

Es claro como el factor maternidad es tomado en consideración a la hora de promover a un hombre vs una mujer.

Esto son elementos que no son aceptados de manera alguna, ni mucho menos abiertamente, y en caso de serlo serían calificados de prácticas discriminatorias. Pero solo basta ver las estadísticas de las promociones de hombres vs mujeres para percatarnos de la realidad.

SALARIO DE LAS MUJERES VS EL SALARIO DE LOS HOMBRES. Uno de los factores evidentes de discriminación es la disparidad de los ingresos. No obstante que la diferencia de ingresos se ha venido ajustando progresivamente, todavía existen diferencias marcadas entre el salario de hombres vs mujeres en posiciones similares.

LA ESPOSA qUE TRABAJA: La diferencia en el nivel de vida de una familia donde la esposa se queda en casa al cuidado de los hijos en comparación de la que sale al mercado de trabajo es prácticamente el doble del otro grupo. Esta sola razón perfila y define el futuro del comportamiento familiar, social y por ende del mercado laboral.

EL COSTO DEL CUIDADO INFANTIL: Para las familias jóvenes este es uno de los aspectos más importantes de costo ya que puedo oscilar entre el 50% al 25% del ingreso total de la familia. Esto sin duda puede comenzar a marcar tendencia en el crecimiento futuro de las poblaciones.

MUJERES y LA CULTURA: Existe una visión patriarcal en todo el mundo en relación al hecho que el hombre tradicionalmente debe ser el proveedor del sustento familiar lo cual condiciona también los derechos básicos de la mujer. Esta visión a pesar de evolucionar progresivamente todavía permanece enquistada en la visión subliminal de la sociedad.

CONCLUSIONES: Sin duda estamos frente a avances muy grandes en cuanto al aporte de las mujeres en el desarrollo mundial de la economía. No obstante es importante que las mujeres sesgadas por la costumbre social, adquieran confianza y conciencia de sus verdaderos derechos de manera que puedan alcanzar los mismos niveles que los hombres.

Este logro más que por la fuerza de leyes o principios solo será definitivo cuando logre ser parte de la conciencia colectiva y no exista el establecimiento de diferencias entre sexo fuerte o débil.

Una sociedad donde tanto hombres como mujeres tengan las misma oportunidades será una sociedad que sin duda tendrá bases económicas doblemente sólidas.

WHAT YOUR EYES AND MOUTH CAN SEE AND SAY ABOUT YOUR HEART

You probably hear a lot of tips about heart-healthy diets and exercise, but did you know that your oral and eye health are also important for your heart health?

There is growing evidence suggesting that gum disease may increase your risk of heart disease, and in many instances, your eye doctor may be the first to see signs of conditions related to heart disease.

Heart disease risks include smoking, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. All of these risks often damage the blood vessels, which are often detected at late stages when they are difficult to reverse. But cardiovascular disease also can damage blood vessels inside the eye, which an eye doctor giving an eye exam may be able to detect sooner and monitor the progress of the disease.

According to the Harvard Heart Letter, several studies have revealed that people with changes in their retinal blood vessels from high blood pressure are significantly more likely to have strokes and heart attacks. These individuals are also at higher risk of developing vascular strokes within the eye that lead to blindness.

Your eye doctor can alert your physician and encourage you to seek appropriate treatment if they spot trouble with your retinal blood vessels.

How can gum disease affect the heart?Several theories exist to explain the link between gum disease and heart disease. For example, periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that are often caused by the bacteria found in plaque.

Oral bacteria found in plaque can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting

the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. Another possibility is that the inflammations caused by gum disease increases plaque build-up, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries. Eliminating dental plaque may be an important step in preventing gum diseases and coronary artery disease, according to a 2007 study published in the Journal of Periodontology.

What can you do to keep yourself healthy?In addition to following the advice of your physician, eye doctor, dentist and periodontist, you can also take the following steps to keep your eyes, teeth and gums healthy:

• get regular eye exams even if you think your vision is fine;

• brush after each meal and snack, using a soft bristle toothbrush;

• use dental floss at least once a day; • have your teeth professionally cleaned

on a regular basis, twice a year for most patients, although if you have gum disease, more frequent cleanings

• might be suggested; • ask your dentist about treatments such

as scaling, a deep cleaning (root planing) or gum treatment if you are diagnosed with periodontal disease;

• tell your dentist and eye doctor if you have heart disease;

• if you smoke, work with your physician to try to quit.

Good dental and vision habits are not only the way to a healthy mouth, but also a healthy heart.

The Weston branch of the American Association of University Women celebrated its 5th annual International Women’s Day on March 10, 2012. The United Nations (UN) established the International Women’s Day to recognize and honor women for their contributions to the betterment of their communities and/or countries. The International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world.

In tune with UN’s goal, AAUW Weston honors local women’s groups with a Service of Distinction plaque and it honors individual

women and girls with a Community Service Star Award. This year, the Service of Distinction Award went to Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas and Mrs. Maria Antoniette Diaz, President of the organization who accepted the award. She

and Mrs. Linda Gomez used a PowerPoint presentation to narrate the mission and history of the organization and highlighted all the past presidents.

The keynote on Live to Make a Difference was given by Mrs. Natividad Soto AIA, LEED AP Bd+C, President, Ferguson Glasgow Schuster Soto and Vice president, American Institute of Architects Florida. She exalted the audience to discover their own passion and follow it through with action to make a difference. She mentioned three principles of action – Engage, Communicate and Empower.

of Keep It Simple Services (KISS) program serving the kids in all the Boys and Girls Clubs in Broward County was one of the two recipients of the Community Service Star Award. Using a PowerPoint presentation, she told the audience about how she got started in a very small way in a club, and how the program has grown to date to cover all the clubs in Broward County. The second recipient of the Community Star award was Nicole Granet, a senior at Spanish River Community School and Founder of Teens who Care, fund raiser for mosquito nets for families in Africa, organizer of beach cleanup locally, among many other voluntary services. The Teens who Care group visits nursing homes, assists living

facilities, veteran’s hospitals and sings for the residents and patients. She used a PowerPoint presentation as well. In the end, she delighted the audience by singing “All I want is a room somewhere…” from My Fair Lady.

de la Comunidad. Este año, la entrega de la placa de distinción fue a Mujeres Latinas Impulsando Mujeres Latinas, a María Antonieta Díaz, presidente de la organización quien recibió el premio. Ella y la señora Linda Gómez hicieron una presentación de PowerPoint para narrar la misión e historia de la organización destacando a todos los presidentes anteriores.

La charla como “Hacer la Diferencia” fue dada por la señora Natividad Soto AIA, LEED AP BD + C, presidente de Ferguson Glasgow Schuster Soto y vicepresidente del Instituto Americano de Arquitectos de Florida. Ella exalta al público a descubrir su propia pasión y seguir adelante en la acción para hacer una diferencia. Ella mencionó tres principios de acción - Participar, comunicarse y empoderarse.

La señora Donnelly Cathy, fundadora y presidente de Keep It Simple Services (KISS) programa que sirve a los niños en los Boys and Girls Clubs del condado de Broward, fue una de las dos ganadoras del Premio Estrella de Servicio a la Comunidad. Mediante una presentación en PowerPoint, explico acerca de cómo se inició muy pequeño un Club, y cómo el programa ha crecido hasta la fecha para cubrir todos los clubes en el condado de Broward. El segundo galardonado con el premio Estrella de la Comunidad fue Nicole Granet, con alto cargo en la Escuela Española de la Comunidad del Río y fundadora de los “Adolescentes les Importa”, para recaudar fondos para mosquiteros para familias en África, organizar limpiezas de playas locales, entre muchos otros servicios de voluntariado. Los “Adolescentes les Importa”, visitan hogares de ancianos, clínicas de cuidado diario, hospital de veteranos y cantan para los residentes y pacientes. Ella hizo también una presentación en Power Point de la

organización. Al final, Nicole deleitó a la audiencia cantando “Todo lo que quiero es una habitación en algún lugar ...” de My Fair Lady.

Do you find yourself getting bogged down in the day-to-day of your business? Do you constantly say “there are not enough hours in the day to do what I want to do?” Between the e-mails, phone calls, and texts which I receive simultaneously is no wonder how I get any work done. These continuous distractions interfere with my constant attempts to stay focused. However, there are ways we can contain the plethora of distractions.Try these eight (8) daily goals to achieve some time management and at the same time progress towards your marketing and business.1.The zTL method: The ZTL (Zero Tolerance List) - First thing in the morning, make a list of things you need to stop doing so you can devote more time and focus on your business instead. For example, my list includes refrain from checking twitter, Facebook, and Google in between tasks. I check my e-mails several times a time and the same time each day. This avoids constant interruptions and distractions.

2.Time Vampires: Have you ever felt robbed of your valuable time? Have you ever felt overwhelmed and unable to achieve your daily objectives? Have you ever felt conflicted and torn between different tasks? Well, then you have been attacked by a time vampire. Time vampires are those individuals that call you to steal your time with nonsense and to dump their problems depriving you of time. Your time is extremely valuable and

what you do with it is critical. Screen your calls and set aside a time to return calls after the tasks that require priority have been completed.

3.The Rule of Thirds (1/3): Start tracking your time. -1/3 = time to prospecting new buyers (business)-1/3 = executing business tasks and -1/3 = supporting existing customers

4.Thirty (30) minutes of media: Take 30 minutes twice a week to shoot and post a personal video message to your community (or your prospects or employees). This can help you tremendously. As a matter of fact, this can help drive customer perception of your company and potentially create new leads.

5.Ten (10) Replies a Day: President Obama responds to 10 written letters every day. It is one of his rituals and it is just plan smart.

6.Work & Commit: Reply to e-mails as well as phone calls within 24 hours.

7.Blog comments or tweets each day with your website. This simple gesture improves loyalty and increases visibility.

8.Put it in Writing: Below are some really awesome websites to keep track of your ideas and to-do lists:-Listhings: (listhings.com) virtual corkboard for pinning to-do list. -Evernote: (evernote.com) Note-taking tools online-Action Method: (actionmenthod.com) helps you break tasks down into steps-and, as the name says, take action.Lastly, this is my favorite task at hand “The Power of Gratitude:” Before you complete your day, write down five (5) people to Thank: Who are your top 5 customers right now? Start sending each one a regular personal note to check in and find out how you can help them. It’s just five people; it will not zap too much of your time, but it will pay huge dividends. This will end your day with a positive note.

Changes have recently taken place within the FCAT scoring system that raises the cut scores for this very important test. Education officials believe that this move towards tougher grading will be the catalyst in ensuring that students leave schools better prepared for college and post secondary careers. In the meantime, as these new scores are introduced this coming spring, they will most likely result in many more students not passing

these very important high-stake standardized exams. So, what happens if students fail to pass? Well, I’m glad you asked! Students stand the potential to be held back a grade, to be placed in remedial or intensive classes or ultimately, they may end up being told that will not graduate from high school.

Changes to the FCAT scoring system passed on a Monday during this year’s regular Florida legislative session as part of more moves to come in making the FCAT 2.0 more rigorous. These changes are the first changes ever made to this standardized examination in the last ten years. These changes are reflected in the determination of the new cut scores, which are the scores that determine achievement levels. Achievement levels are benchmarks that separate those students who pass the examination from those who don’t and will have an impact on the math and reading FCAT for students’ grade 3 through grade 10. The state Board of Education also voted to approve a scoring system for the state’s new Algebra 1 end-of-course examination (EOC). As board members try to explain why the change and why now, the common message seems to be that their intentions are to make students more globally prepared at their graduation point as the concern of many in the past has been that students are presently graduating high school without the mastery of skills needed to begin college right

away, instead, students spend lots of time and money in remedial courses in order to catch up in preparation for true college level education.

The impact that will be felt by the changes of the FCAT, cut scores will go beyond the scope of the “student impact” – the cut score changes will directly impact school grades, teacher evaluations, graduation rates, course

assignments and promotion within those courses – just to mention a few. What does this mean? I’m glad you asked - Again! Let’s see what the data shows. For the school year 2010-2011, data showed that 60% of all 10th graders (statewide) were successful at

passing the reading FCAT, an examination that is required for graduation. If those same students were to be graded under the new

cut scores, this same group of 10th graders from across the state would have dropped to only 52% achieving a passing score in their reading FCAT – an 8% drop in success. For districts such as ours, large urban public school districts, the impact may be reflected with as much as a 10% drop in achievement performance – a percentage high enough to equate to close to 1,000 students. On the math side, the state also adopted new Algebra 1 end-of-course examination cut off scores and those changes would have kept 46% of all high school students taking this examination, in the state of Florida, from passing and gaining the achievement level needed to show mastery… consequently, it would have kept this group from meeting one of the very important requirements for graduation.

Some believe that the fact that the reading FCAT test is given during 10th grade (the second year of the four years of high school) in hopes that a student can show reading mastery at the high school level is an advantage. The argument brought forward is that this timetable gives students, who do not make the cut off score for passing, ample time and opportunity to pass the examination during their junior or senior year in high school.

Although most of the conversation surrounding this very important issue is over the cut off scores at the high school level, it is also important to remember that students at other levels are also being impacted; one very important group is that of 3rd graders. When students in third grade score at the lowest levels of achievement, they face the

possibility of not being promoted to the 4th grade. During the 2010-2011 school year, this was the case for 16% of all third graders in

the entire state. Under the new cut off scores, that number would have gone up by 2% to 18% of all third graders – a definite tangible impact, especially if you are the parent of one of those third graders being kept from grade 4 promotion.

So where do we go from here? Counties

across Florida are preparing themselves for the increase of the standards this spring planning action plans, which if in place, will help mitigate the impact on schools and students. Communication with all stakeholders is paramount as we establish plans of actions and we keep all members of the community informed with factual information as it applies to each particular school district, always remembering that each district will have their own set of particular impacts and challenges to deal with. Districts will need to determine how many students may need remedial classes as a result of the new standards, as it does present a clear potential budgetary impact for the district. District wide adjustment to higher standard expectations does not come cheap; the adjustments needed to address the individual needs of students may potentially put more strain onto an already shrinking budget. Some believe that this impact would have been greatly minimized by a slight delay in the implementation time frame – perhaps by giving school districts a year to better plan on strategies.

Regardless of timing, regardless of budgetary impact, regardless of what the new cut off scores are – one thing is for sure – raising the achievement bar on standardized tests is a routine process which happens often and as such, the district will meet the challenge by rebounding and adjusting to the higher expectations… and with time – student performance will rise. Los cambios que han tenido lugar recientemente en el sistema de puntuación del FCAT eleva los niveles de calificación para esta prueba tan importante. Las autoridades educativas creen que este giro hacia una clasificación más fuerte será el catalizador para asegurar que los estudiantes dejen las escuelas mejor preparados para

la universidad y post carreras secundarias. Mientras tanto, ya que estos nuevos resultados son reflejados en la primavera entrante, muy probablemente pueda haber muchos más estudiantes que no aprobaron estos exámenes estandarizados de gran envergadura. Entonces, ¿qué sucede si los estudiantes no pasan? Bueno, me alegro que lo pregunte! Los estudiantes tienen la posibilidad de repetir un grado, se colocará en recuperación o en clases intensivas o en última instancia, pueden terminar diciendo que no se graduarán de la escuela secundaria.

Estos cambios se reflejan en la determinación de los puntajes de los nuevos cortes, que son los resultados que determinan los niveles de logro. Los niveles de rendimiento son puntos de referencia que separan a los alumnos que superan el examen, de aquellos que no, y tendrá un impacto en las matemáticas y lectura del FCAT para los alumnos de 3ro. A 10mo grado. La Junta Escolar del estado

también votó para aprobar un nuevo sistema de puntuación para Álgebra 1 en el examen final (COE).

Como miembros de la Junta tratan de explicar por qué el cambio y por qué ahora, el mensaje común parece ser que sus intenciones son hacer que los estudiantes

estén más preparados a nivel mundial para graduarse ya que la preocupación ha sido que muchos en el pasado se gradúan de secundaria sin el dominio de las habilidades necesarias para comenzar la universidad de

inmediato, en cambio, gastan un montón de tiempo y de dinero en cursos de recuperación con el fin de prepararse para la verdadera educación universitaria.

El impacto que se sentirá por los cambios en el FCAT, está en los puntajes de corte que van más allá del ámbito de aplicación del “impacto al estudiante” – en los cambios en la puntuación final que tendrá un impacto directo en las notas de la escuela, en las evaluaciones de los maestros, en las tasas de graduación, trabajos de curso y promoción dentro de los cursos - sólo para mencionar algunos. ¿Qué significa esto? Me alegro que lo pregunte - ¡Otra vez! Vamos a ver lo que los datos muestran. Para el año escolar 2010-2011, los datos mostraron que el 60% de todos los alumnos del 10mo grado (en todo el estado) tuvieron éxito en pasar el FCAT de lectura, un examen que se requiere para la graduación. Si esos mismos estudiantes iban a ser clasificados bajo los puntajes de corte nuevos, este mismo grupo de alumnos del 10mo. grado se habría reducido a sólo el 52% que logró una calificación aprobatoria en su examen FCAT de lectura - una caída del 8% en el éxito. Para los distritos como el nuestro, los grandes distritos urbanos de las escuelas públicas, el impacto se puede reflejar con una caída del 10% en el rendimiento de los logros - un porcentaje lo suficientemente alto como para igualar a cerca de 1.000 estudiantes. Por el lado de las matemáticas, el Estado también aprobó una nueva prueba de corte de puntuación de Algebra a fin de curso y se mantendría un 46% de todos los estudiantes de secundaria que toman este examen, en el estado de Florida, que pasen y obtengan el nivel de rendimiento necesario para demostrar su dominio... en consecuencia, habría mantenido este grupo de cumplir con uno de los requisitos muy importantes para la graduación.

Algunos creen que el hecho de que la prueba de lectura del FCAT se administra durante el 10 º grado, con la esperanza de que un estudiante pueda mostrar dominio en la lectura en secundaria es una ventaja. El razonamiento es que este calendario da a los estudiantes, que no hacen el corte de la puntuación para pasar, tiempo más que suficiente y la oportunidad de aprobar el examen durante su penúltimo o último año de escuela secundaria.

Aunque lo más importante de todo este tema, es el punto de corte de puntajes en secundaria, también es importante recordar que los estudiantes de otros niveles también están siendo afectados, un grupo muy importante es el de 3er grado. Cuando los estudiantes de tercer grado tienen la puntuación en los niveles más bajos de logro, se enfrentan a la posibilidad de no ser promovidos al grado cuarto. Durante el año escolar 2010-2011,

este fue el caso en el 16% de todos los alumnos de tercer grado en todo el estado. Bajo el nuevo corte de cuentas, ese número habría aumentado de un 2% a un 18%, un impacto tangible definitivo, sobre todo si usted es el padre de uno de los alumnos de tercer grado privado de ser promovido al 4to grado.

Entonces, ¿a dónde vamos desde aquí? Los Condados de la Florida se preparan para el aumento de los estándares y planificación de planes de acción en la primavera, que en su lugar, ayudarán a mitigar el impacto en las escuelas y estudiantes. La comunicación con todos los interesados es de suma importancia ya que establece planes de acción y seguimos informados, con información sobre los hechos que se aplican a cada distrito escolar en particular, siempre recordando que cada distrito tendrá su propio conjunto de impactos y desafíos que enfrentar. Los Distritos determinaran cuántos estudiantes pueden necesitar clases de recuperación, como resultado de las nuevas normas, para ver el potencial impacto presupuestario del distrito. Ajustarse a las altas expectativas del distrito no es barato, los ajustes necesarios para atender las necesidades de los estudiantes pueden poner más presión sobre un presupuesto ya reducido. Algunos creen que este impacto se ha reducido mucho por un ligero retraso en el calendario de aplicación - tal vez dando a los distritos escolares un año para mejorar la planificación de estrategias.

Independientemente del tiempo y de las repercusiones presupuestarias, así como del nuevo corte de cuentas - una cosa es segura - elevar el nivel de logro en las pruebas estandarizadas es un proceso rutinario que sucede a menudo y, como tal, el distrito asumirá el reto de retomar y adaptarse a las mayores expectativas ... y con el tiempo –el rendimiento de los estudiantes se elevará.

Artcoffee es una organización de un grupo de venezolanas residenciadas en el sur de la Florida, cuya mision está dirigida a promover el arte contemporáneo a b s t r a c c i o n i s t a Venezolano a través de la organización de exposiciones y venta de piezas de artistas con reconocida trayectoria nacional e internacional, combinando el arte

y la estética con una variada cultura del café y gastronomía típica venezolana. Es cuestión de resaltar nuestra identidad”, afirmo Trina Oropeza, fundadora de la Organización.

Este proyecto comienza a mediados del 2011 al producirse la realización del 1er Artcoffee en Octubre de 2011. Dado que Artcoffee entiende la importancia de la educación frente a la realidad del colectivo venezolano, cumple con su responsabilidad social apoyando el proyecto educativo de la Fundación Semillas en Caracas para el desarrollo de la Escuela Rural Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Venezuela, donde asisten niños en niveles críticos de pobreza, aportando el 10% de las ventas recaudadas en cada uno de sus eventos.

Un comité de evaluación examina los artistas a ser promovidos en nuestras exposiciones con el objeto de verificar que se cumpla con una serie de requisitos, tales como: La propuesta artística debe ser contemporánea; sus estudios realizados en escuelas y/o talleres de arte reconocidos, tanto como dentro y fuera de Venezuela; exposiciones realizadas en espacios públicos y/o privados: museos, galerías, universidades, casas de la cultura, salas de exposición, ferias; experiencia

en docencia e investigación en las artes; premios y/o nominaciones recibidas a nivel nacional e internacional.

Adicionalmente Artcoffee apoya y brinda la oportunidad a 2 artistas plásticos venezolanos emergentes, cuya obra se pueda ubicar dentro de la línea de arte contemporáneo.

Artcoffee ha realizado más de tres exposiciones desde la del 1ero de Octubre que realizaron en Boca Raton. Luego se realizaron dos en Doral y Cooper City. Actualmente están buscando una nueva locación para continuar sus exposiciones/cafe.

A lo largo de cada una de las ediciones del Artcoffee se han presentado artistas plásticos de gran relevancia en el ámbito del arte contemporáneo, entre ellos estan Elena Gil, Ingrid Lozano, Vicente Antonorsi, Patricia Van Dalen, Carlos Sanchez Vega, Javier León, Jorge Briceño, Rolando Quero, entre otros…. Dentro de las propuestas emergentes, se les ha dado cabida a artistas como Alexandra Marquina, Eunice Padrón y Astrid Campins, entre otros.

Como siempre hay una persona detrás de todas estas organizaciones quienes apoyan y orientan a sus miembros para obtener los mejores resultados en la misión que emprenden y en este caso se le atribuye a Kathy Pira , quien ha sido una constante colaboradora de Artcoffee.

La idea de hacer el próximo Artcoffee es en Weston, dado que los protagonistas y principales interesados en esto, serían los tantos venezolanos que viven en esta ciudad. “ Sabemos que el venezolano es amante del arte y que a través de el rememoran su esencia creativa, libre y alegre”, comento Thais Marquina de Artcoffee. “Consideramos además que debemos ser motor para que trascienda lo que somos hacia otros grupos de culturas diferentes, es así como Weston se convierte en un lugar clave para realizar la 4ta edición del Artcoffee, pues es aquí donde convergen la presencia de una nutrida comunidad venezolana que a su vez se ha integrado a una inmensa comunidad multicultural …justo lo que debemos reforzar!” concluye Trina Oropeza.

Artcoffee is an organization of a group of Venezuelan residents in South Florida, whose mission is to promote contemporary abstract Venezuelan art through the Organization of exhibitions and sale of pieces of renowned national and international artists, combining art and aesthetics with a varied culture of coffee and Venezuelan cuisine. “It is a matter of highlighting our identity”, says Trina Oropeza, founder of the organization.

This project began in mid-2011 with the achievement of the 1st Artcoffee that occurred in October 2011. Given that Artcoffee understands the importance of education versus the reality of the average Venezuelan, it meets its social responsibility supporting the educational project of the Seed Foundation in Caracas for the development of the rural school Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe in Venezuela, assisting children in critical levels of poverty, donating 10% of proceeds collected in each of their events

An evaluation Committee examines the artists to be promoted in our exhibitions in order to verify that it complies with certain requirements, such as: the artistic proposal must be contemporary; they studied in schools and/or recognized art workshops, both inside and outside Venezuela; exhibitions held in public and/or private spaces: museums, galleries, universities, houses of culture, showrooms, fairs; experience in teaching and research in the arts; Awards and/or nominations received at national and international levels.

In addition, Artcoffee supports and provides the opportunity for 2 emerging Venezuelan artists, whose work can locate within the line of contemporary art.

Artcoffee has had more than three exhibitions since October that took place in Boca Raton. Then were two in Doral and Cooper City. They are currently looking for a new location to continue their exhibitions café.

Throughout each of the editions of the Artcoffee have been artists of great relevance in the field of contemporary art, among them are Elena Gil, Ingrid Lozano, Vicente Antonorsi, Patricia Van Dalen, Carlos Sanchez Vega, Javier León, Jorge Briceño, Rolando Quero, besides others…. And to emerging

Weston Town Center Hosts Its Beauty, Fashion & Fitness Event

The Weston Town Center’s Beauty, Fashion & Fitness Event was held last month in the heart of downtown Weston. Weston Town Center’s retail merchants featured their 2012 trends from Fashion Styles and accessories, Salon, Beauty, Health and Fitness. The red carpet event had LIVE Music by Elastic Bond, Entertainment by Dance Gallery and RockWithU Entertainment, Fashion Show, Exotic Car Showcase by Super Exotic Promotions, over 20 Specialty Vendors, Deliver the Dream Charity Silent Auction and much more!

Weston residents and surrounding communities were invited, with an attendance of around 1,200 people throughout the day. Deliver the Dream Foundation held a silent auction throughout the event, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the organization. The charity managed to raise funds from lots of specialty items that were donated to the auction. Students from the Dance Gallery put on a great show, performances ranging from hip hop to jazz and Broadway, they really amazed the crowd! A wide variety of pageant title holders from all over South Florida rocked the runway! The models wore clothing for the fashion show provided by A Nose for Clothes and Marcellas Boutique. Hair and makeup for all models was provided by Leslies Salon,

Helen Charles Salon and Applewoods. “This was truly a very successful day for the Weston Town Center, retail merchants, vendors and a very deserving charity” said Phillipa Stephenson, Director of Marketing and Events.

Deliver the Dream helps families suffering from a serious illness or crisis. They organize monthly three-day retreats for families. Their program invites up to 15 families, free of charge, to one of our retreat locations. Each family that attends has a member - whether it’s a child or parent – living with an illness such as Cancer, Autism, HIV/AIDS or Cerebral Palsy. Their retreats allow families to relax, enjoy time together, forge new friendships and create support groups with the other

families suffering from the same disease. When one person in a family is sick, the entire family is impacted and there are very few organizations nationwide that focus on the whole family unit like Deliver the Dream.

La Fundación Entrega un Sueño, llevó a cabo una subasta silenciosa durante todo el evento, con un 100% de los ingresos que benefician de la organización. La organización logró recaudar fondos a partir de lotes de artículos que fueron donados a la subasta. Los estudiantes de la Galería de Danza dieron un gran espectáculo, con actuaciones que van desde el hip hop al jazz y Broadway. juego los participantes deben eliminar a sus contrincantes, Katniss Everdeen, una bella joven se ofrece voluntariamente a participar para poder salvar a su pequeña hermana. Llena

de espectaculares efectos especiales, esta novedosa e interesante película sin duda alguna es una opción

interesante para los amantes del cine de acción y suspenso. El trailer de la película consiguió en solo un dia más de 2

¿Están sufriendo los hábitos y las destrezas de lectura de los niños en esta era electrónica? Según una encuesta nacional realizada a maestros por Book Adventure, la respuesta es sí. La encuesta reveló casi la mitad (48%) de los maestros opinan que la mayoría de los estudiantes en sus aulas de clase están leyendo levemente bien o por debajo del nivel de grado.

La encuesta también reveló que el 72% de los maestros a nivel nacional opinan que los niños deben leer en casa más de tres horas por semana – alrededor de 30 minutos al día. Sin embargo, el 91% de los maestros dicen que los niños están leyendo realmente menos de una o dos horas cada semana – alrededor de menos de 15 minutos por día.

The 10th Anniversary 2012 Relay For Life of Weston is just around the corner, taking place at the Cypress Bay High School track in Weston on Saturday, April 14th. Jose Rafael está lleno de alegría y una fortaleza espiritual ilimitada, el gracias a la colaboración de muchas personas y empresas, incluyendo Santa Barbara Airlines, tienen como objetivo llegar a la meta de los $300,000, que cubrirán los costos de un tratamiento médico que mejorara mucho su destreza motriz y que consiste en la implantación de un chip en el cerebro llamado “Deep Brain Stimulator” un neuroestimulador colocado mediante cirugía en un lugar especifico del área antes expuesta, intervención quirúrgica que se realizara en el Memorial Hermann Hospital de Houston.
