Six proud Junior School boys recently received prizes for their artworks at the Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show. Congratulations to (L-R, Back Row) Lewis Bird,
Patrick Nolan, Angus Dann (L-R, Front Row) Charlie Payne, Finlay Waring and Henry Fitzgerald on their prize winning art.
From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Over recent assemblies a number of Year 6 boys have been awarded leadership positions, with these being very much a part of our School culture and traditions. In times past, such leadership positions in boys’ schools would have related solely to sport. I am pleased that our School is much broader and more thoughtful in outlook, with boys being acknowledged across cultural, sporting and musical endeavours. The photographs below highlight leadership across a nice range of pursuits at our School and I congratulate Sam Gladwin as Captain of Chess, Bede Davis as Captain of Music and Charlie Randall as Captain of Cross Country on their positions.

Prep to Year 3 Hats In recent times several children in Australian schools have sustained injuries involving their hat cords. In one instance, a more serious injury occurred interstate as a result of a young child’s hat becoming caught on some playground equipment, with the cord tightening around the child’s throat. Fortunately, the young boy fully recovered. As a result of these issues, all new Prep to Year 3 hats now have their hat cords removed by the uniform shop prior to sale. However, some boys from Prep to Year 3 may have an older hat that still has a cord attached. I encourage parents to remove the cord at home as a simple safety precaution.
Cord to be removed
TGS App If you have not yet taken the time to download the Toowoomba Grammar School App I would encourage you to do so. The App, which is free, is used to send out reminder notices about school events and allows you to access this newsletter more readily on your iPhone (or similar), iPad and other devices. All boys in Year 5 and Year 6 are required to have the App on their iPads. In addition, the App is used for weekly information about GPS sport. If you installed the App some time ago, you may need to go into the App Store and check if it requires updating.
National Testing – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Boys in Year 3 and Year 5 will be involved in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) next week. Testing will occur on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10, and Thursday 11 May. It is important that boys arrive at school on time as this National Testing will commence at 8.25am. Boys in these year levels who arrive after the bell will not be able to enter their classrooms and interrupt other students once the testing has commenced. I ask for the support of all parents ensuring boys arrive at school on time.
I wish all Junior School boys the very best for their choral sections at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod tonight and on Sunday.
Regards
Scott Campbell Head of Junior School
From the Deputy Head of Junior School Haircuts Recently I have noticed a few boys who require a haircut. “The school’s regulations concerning haircuts are as follows: the hair must not touch the collar, and must be neatly shaped at the back of the neck. The ears must not be obscured and side-levers must not extend past the middle of the ear. Extremes of hairstyles are not permitted (including very short haircuts). Boys are not permitted to dye or colour their hair.” This is an excerpt from the Student Handbook.
Nude Food Day Just a reminder that Nude Food Day in the Junior School occurs each Tuesday. The boys are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for supporting this. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that boys and parents will support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham and cheese roll-ups.
We’re for the gorilla. Are you? Your reliance on technology can impact wildlife. Many mobile phones contain coltan which is in huge demand for today’s high tech devices. Some coltan is illegally mined in gorilla habitat in Africa. By recycling your mobile phone through Taronga’s “They’re calling on you” campaign you’ll be reducing the demand for coltan, saving your phone from landfill and raising money for gorilla conservation. Recycle your old mobile phone to help gorillas in the wild. Please drop off your old mobile phone at the front office. All the money raised from recycling your old phone supports vital gorilla conservation projects in Africa through the Jane Goodall institute. Helping your son with Literacy and Numeracy I am often asked by parents to suggest ways to support their son with literacy and numeracy skills at home. There are many activities and experiences that will give your son the best start along his literacy and numeracy pathway at school. I have included a link to one of the best parent information sheets explaining some simple ideas that you can do at home to support your son. http://education.qld.gov.au/literacyandnumeracy/pdf/factsheet-l-n.pdf
NAPLAN NAPLAN is fast approaching (May 9, 10, and 11) and it is not uncommon for the boys to feel a little stressed about the test, especially if they are new to the process. Here are a couple of strategies that you can implement to help your son achieve to the best of their ability on test day.
1.‘Being there’ emotionally During times of stress, children usually need extra nurturing, comfort and understanding from their parents and carers to help them feel secure and confident. Be open and receptive to how children are feeling as well as provide comfort and attention when needed.
2. Discuss feelings Encourage children to talk about how they feel. Listen with empathy so they feel understood and know that their feelings are normal. Help your children to understand that talking about feelings can help to manage them. 3. Support children’s confidence Teach children to be brave by showing them you believe they can do it, and encourage them to ‘have a go’ even if they are feeling nervous. Providing positive feedback for effort, celebrating successes and encouraging them to keep trying will help your children to feel confident in approaching assessments.
4. Help with relaxation skills Breathing slowly to calm down and helping them to imagine themselves coping well during a test are really helpful ways of managing anxiety. Doing it with them is a fun way to start. 5. Teach helpful thinking Instead of saying to themselves “I can’t do this” encourage them to say “I’ll give it a go”. 6. Lead by example Show your child how you cope positively with feeling anxious or stressed by thinking out loud e.g., “I feel a bit nervous, but I’m going to try my best”. Remaining calm and positive when your son is feeling anxious can help him to feel more confident. 7. Help your child have clear expectations Talking through what will happen. Mark the days on your calendar and show enthusiasm towards the process leading up to the testing period. Your son’s teacher will have explained the process that will occur on each day during in-class preparation sessions. 8. Discuss problem-solving Brainstorm situations that might arise during the test and then come up with possible solutions with them. For example, ask them what are three things that they might be able to do if they freeze in the exam and feel sick – possible strategies include taking 10 slow breaths to calm down and refocus, taking a sip of water if it is available or letting a teacher know they feel unwell. 9. Teach confidence-building tricks For example, looking through the paper and completing questions they know they can answer first before trying more difficult ones. Again, your son’s teacher will have explained many of these as part of preparation. Jan Heffernan Head of Teaching and Learning
ANZAC Day Last week the School held its annual ANZAC Day Service for boys from Years 3 to 12. In 2015 and on the centenary of ANZAC Day, Mrs Jess Galbraith (Prep - Year 3 Co-ordinator) felt it was important that there was some form of memorial for ANZAC Day in the Junior School and appropriate for younger children. Mrs Galbraith created large letters made from sand spelling out the word ‘ANZAC’. Boys, staff and parents brought in flowers to lay on these letters, with these remaining in place on the ANZAC Day holiday. This was well received by our community and has now become a part of our School and its traditions. We appreciate what Mrs Galbraith has brought to our School, and the respectful manner in which the boys conducted themselves while placing the flowers on our memorial.
Sports News Range Zone Cross Country Last Friday, 14 of our Junior School boys ran at the Toowoomba Range Zone Cross Country Carnival. We had a strong team this year that prepared and trained well for the carnival. Thank you to all the boys in the team for your commitment to the school and to all the parents who have been bringing the boys to training each week. Congratulations to the following boys who were selected in the Toowoomba Range Zone team - Judd Rei, Ben Anderson, Charlie Randall, Archer Black and Charlie Lachmund. The following boys are reserves - Xavier Lindemann, Hussein Yusaf and Max Williamson.

The Year 5 and Year 6 football teams travelled to the Gold Coast to play The Southport School (TSS) last weekend. The long bus trip and games against a very strong sporting school are never a recipe for success. However, all four teams recorded wins and played wonderfully well. The 5A team was particularly dominant, winning 9 – 1 and the 6A team won 6 – 3. It was also nice to see so many parents making the trip to support the boys. Congratulations to all four teams on a great day.

Music News Musicians’ Concert The Term 2 Musicians’ Concert will be held on Thursday 25 May, commencing at 2.10pm. Musicians’ Concerts are a great opportunity for boys who are currently taking instrumental lessons to perform solo or duet/trio repertoire in front of a supportive audience of Prep – Year 6 students and staff. A letter outlining the concert will be sent home this week. Musicians wishing to perform in the concert are asked to discuss their performance with their Music Tutor, and then return their nomination form by Thursday 11 May (week 4). Junior School Ensemble Structure Ensemble playing is an important part of musical development for children. The benefits vary from academic to pure enjoyment. We are fortunate to have nine ensembles in the Junior School, and have the privilege of starting each day with music before school. Our current ensembles include:
Tribe (vocal ensemble)
Tribe Junior
Concert Band
Introductory Concert Band
Chamber Wind Ensemble
Jazz Band (previously known as Brass Ensemble)
Percussion Ensemble
String Ensemble
Orchestra (annual 6 week program) If your son has been learning a wind, string or brass instrument for longer than 6 months and he would like to be placed in an ensemble please contact us to discuss this.
